In this episode of the Lead On podcast, Jeff Iorg, president of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, discusses practical aspects of ministry leadership, particularly addressing the challenge of dealing with angry people. Iorg observes that anger is prevalent in today's culture and often spills into churches and ministry contexts. He explains that anger typically arises from feelings of threat, whether physical, relational, personal, or related to one's possessions or identity. He provides various examples and emphasizes that ministry leaders can often become unintended targets of displaced anger. Iorg advises leaders to recognize different expressions of anger, such as hostile humor, nagging, and withdrawal, and to handle these situations with patience and firmness. He underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of anger and using these moments as opportunities for discipleship and spiritual growth. Ultimately, Iorg encourages leaders to maintain a compassionate yet firm stance, sometimes requiring confrontation and containment of destructive behavior to protect the ministry's mission.

The takeaways from this episode can help leaders better understand their team's emotions, promote effective conflict resolution, and ensure a healthier, more empathetic workspace. Part of this work includes running online support groups for these SURVIVORS of ABUSE and in particular Psychological Abuse since 1998.     Joan has reached out to the ADA organizations nationally and their words to Joan was that it was an "EPIDEMIC." If you are disabled, THEY DON'T CARE. In cases where the person has ADA accommodations, the judge can/will decide they are incompetent and without an evidentiary hearing and violate the person's rights. They can be allowed to either fire their attorney and self represent, or put on to assist their attorney. This is a FIRST AMENDMENT CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT VIOLATION.     Joan has seen parents so traumatized and their PTSD, stress and anxiety being off the charts because it's their case and being treated horribly in the courts, being attacked from every direction and being yelled at. Most of these cases do not belong in a courtroom. There should be a mediation process.     The courts make an ADA Advocate register who they are in support of that individual. This is a private thing. ADA records are supposed to be sealed with the courts as well as the ADVOCATE. Dr. Martin shares his extensive research on anger, its effects, and practical strategies for managing angry people. Join hosts Leanne Elliott, a business psychologist, and Al Elliott, a business owner, as they explore how to harness anger for positive change. Key Points from This Episode: The Myth of Catharsis: Dr. Martin debunks the common belief that venting anger through physical aggression is beneficial. He explains why this approach can actually increase aggression and anger in the long term. Dr. Martin highlights the importance of recognising anger's role in our lives and the difference between feeling angry and acting aggressively. The Role of Genetics and Environment: Both genetics and environmental factors, such as upbringing and social modelling, play a significant role in how individuals experience and express anger. Gender Differences in Expressing Anger: Men and women experience anger similarly in terms of frequency and intensity, but they tend to express it differently due to societal norms and upbringing. Strategies for Managing Anger: Dr. Martin offers practical advice on how to manage anger effectively, including preparing for potentially anger-inducing situations, reflecting on past angry encounters, and practicing non-complementary responses to de-escalate situations. The Positive Aspects of Anger: While often viewed negatively, anger can have positive effects, such as fostering team cohesion or motivating political action, when channeled appropriately. Dealing with Angry People: Understanding the reasons behind someone's anger and employing empathy and strategic communication can help manage tense situations and potentially transform anger into constructive outcomes. Everyone has their own set of triggers when it comes to getting frustrated, perhaps even angry. Feelings of anger bubble to the surface when we negatively interpret and react to certain situations. It might be when we're threatened or attacked, frustrated or when we're feeling powerless. Or it might happen when we're being treated unfairly or being disrespected. But are the situations that frustrate us justification for breaking the law? ======================================= Get 10% Off your TruthFinder subscription with code EVIL10 at checkout: https://truthfinder.pxf.io/c/3466408/1404760/15694

We all feel angry at times and occasionally it can be a helpful emotion. But sometimes it can be difficult to manage and make our lives harder, especially when we too easily fall victim to our triggers. While anger is not considered a mental health issue, it can often be a symptom. And whether you're the person who is angry, or you're on the receiving end, it's not good for either party's mental and emotional health.  Dr. Ryan Martin (aka the Anger Professor) researches and writes about healthy and unhealthy expressions of anger. His books, ‘How to Deal with Angry People: 10 Strategies for Facing Anger at Home, at Work and in the Street' and ‘Why We Get Mad: How to Use Your Anger for Positive Change', explore why people become angry, how people can use their anger in productive ways, and how to work effectively with angry people.   Talking to host Gabby, Ryan shares some strategies for both managing your own anger and what you can do to diffuse someone else's. Ryan also explains why at the root of road rage, the cause of the anger is usually something bigger than what has happened on the road. Plus, Ryan breaks down the signs to look out for if you, or someone you know, may need professional help for their anger.    For more on Dr. Ryan and to take part in The Anger Project survey: http://alltheragescience.com/ To follow Dr. Ryan on social media: @angerprofessor on Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Leaders in action occasionally get upset and want to quit. How can you handle angry people with big complaints? Deeper listening is the key.   Bill had a client who got into a fight with another manager. After listening deeply to his grievances, Bill was able to explore curiosity around the other manager in the fight, which then gave space for the angry manager to do so as well. When he did, he was able to go deeper and consider why the other manager might have gotten so upset. With greater compassion, he was able to address the real issue at hand.   Behind every complaint is something virtuous. When you can point to the virtue amidst the complaint, understanding and effective change can take place. If you can stop fighting for your own position and consider what the other person is asking for, the underlying virtue can be addressed.   Dealing with upset people can rapidly be shifted when you listen for and name the unspoken value that they are fighting for.   Resources: 20,000 Scaleups Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) One of the worst things you can say to someone angry is “You need to calm down”. So don't say that because never in the history of the world has that worked. Anger is an entirely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But, when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems. We're talking about issues at work, your relationships, and the overall quality of your life. In this episode, Charlie shares three strategies for reacting to someone's anger. Wisdom with Charlie Perkins is available on Apple Podcast, Amazon Music, Amazon Alexa, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Google Podcast, and all major platforms.
