A community building and advice podcast for actors trying to make it in Hollywood.
The biz loves to make movies about itself, and in this episode we each talk about our top three favorite films that are about Hollywood. There's a lot to make fun of about the biz so the majority are comedies that lampoon various aspects of our beloved industry. If you're interested in this genre, we also highly recommend the animated comedy series BoJack Horseman on Netflix. It cuts brilliantly and uncomfortably close to the bone. What does it mean to live the actor's life during COVID? In this episode we share a few stories about auditioning and being on set during these tumultuous times. Seth has been fortunate enough to be involved in a few projects and Todd has had a bunch of auditions roll in. There's even a tip about how to act when your scene partner isn't physically present. Continuing our grand tradition of movie reviews, we each took in a classic film we'd not seen- Seth watched Rebel Without a Cause, Todd screened Lilies of the Field, and here are our respective takes on each- with a specific focus on why, as actors it's important to view these films COVID time is the perfect time to watch these masterpieces, so get on it! :) Insta: @theoutsidersbiz @sethaustininsta @todd.pickering Twitter: @outsidersbiz Wanna listen to us on Spotify? Death, taxes, and REJECTION: the only three guarantees in an actor's life. How does one deal with constantly being told (or more likely NOT told) "no?" In this episode we give a few different strategies for making rejection just another part of an actor's routine. If you take nothing else away from this episode, the number one tip is to not take any rejection personal...ever :). Last week we talked about agents and how to not get scammed by one, this week we talk about managers and how they compare/contrast with agents. One thing we neglected to really hit home on is that, if you have both, they should be working TOGETHER as a team with you. No one works "for" anyone. You all actively work to further everyone's interests as a team. Comment or email if you have questions or concerns- theoutsidersbiz@gmail.com P.S.- Seth's latest acting work (the thing he rambled about at the end- UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! -is now streaming on Amazon :). How does one determine the legitimacy of an agent? What are the telltale signs of scammery (it' a word, trust me) in this realm? The answers to these and other questions await you in this week's episode. There's a tip from Todd toward the end that is particularly fire, regarding headshots. In all honesty, this is one of our best episodes to date. We're super proud of it. Enjoy! P.S. Seth's latest acting work- UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! -is now streaming on Amazon :). Inspired by a post from an actor support group on Facebook, we go deep into the importance of listening as it pertains to actors. Why is it so hard to listen like an actor? How can we learn to listen and respond in interesting and captivating ways? Seth talks about his Meisner training at Playhouse West in Los Angeles, the whole purpose of which is to make one a good listener. Todd gives strong insights into how one might learn to become a better listener in everyday life, and also how learning to listen as an actor will help you be more emotionally intelligent in whatever you do. We go film by film fiercely defending our top ten. Seth scores a YUGE victory at the very end, vanquishing the evil Todd from the land. The boys go back and forth, each vociferously defending his best film picks. Todd takes the high scholarly route for his choices, while Seth goes the Marie Kondo road. #doesitsparkjoy Also, Seth's panties may or may not drop. Here's a link to THR's top 100 list, which we based ours of off: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/100-best-films-ever-hollywood-favorites-818512/item/2001-a-space-odyssey-hollywoods-818360 Insta: @theoutsidersbiz @sethaustininsta @todd.pickering Twitter: @outsidersbiz Walk of Fame Wednesdays on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/WalkofFameWednesdayswithToddPickering
We open with a discussion about acting on camera vs. on stage. Spoiler alert- we both started on stage and find the camera to be a tricky beast. Then we give our take on what the Hollywood Reporter claims are the top 10 movies of all time, and Todd challenges Seth to come up with his own top 10 for the next episode so they can argue it out :). Todd finishes with a fun story about waiting on Sr. Roberto De Niro. We go deep into the dos and don'ts of relocating for your acting career, with a focus on moving to LA since that's what we both did. Move to the city you actually LIKE, but also one where your skills are likely to get you a job. Get a side job ASAP. Seth talks about the unfortunate conditions of his children's theatre experience. We open with more on Hollywood's "reopening" and kindly encourage all of our listeners to wear masks so that we can all get back to work more quickly. Todd describes his first virtual audition and plugs his Hollywood themed educational series Walk of Fame Wednesdays. Seth quickly reviews Dark on Netflix and the boys discuss keeping their heads in the game (accountability, cough cough) with very little going on in the entertainment industry. Audition by Michael Shurtleff- READ IT :) Insta @theoutsidersbiz @sethaustininsta @todd.pickering Twitter @outsidersbiz
Numero seis! Lots more about "reopening," Todd's college training, and family issues that might arise when you enter the biz. Seth reviews the virtual show he saw last week and the boys have their first pod-fight :o).
We Really fun one :). T raining! We go deep into Seth's college training, particularly his path to a theatre major. Then a few celebrity stories and we discuss the Geffen Playhouse's very innovative and socially distanced virtual theatre production. Concludes with our newest segment: WEEKLY TIPS! theoutsidersbiz@gmail.com
We talk a little about the "reopening" of Hollywood, but more about our full support the Black Lives Matter movement and how hard it is to have racial conversations as white people. We watched this episode before posting and thought that we looked and sounded super uncomfortable most of the time. Then Seth (serendipitously) read a post by an activist friend suggesting that if you're not uncomfortable, you're not having the right conversation. We pledge to continue having these conversations. email us at theoutsidersbiz@.com if you'd like to be a part of these conversations. Much love -Seth &Todd
We go deep into Todd's Hollywood on-set experience, Seth gets mildly jealous of his interactions with Patti LuPone. Digressions include the extreme importance of training and team building in Hollywood, and the challenges posed by hair.
#2! Todd talks about his experience being cast in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood, Seth Mentions his #metoo experience, and we emphasize the importance of actors knowing their movie history
Our first episode! We introduce ourselves and talk about why we're doing the show- to foster a sense of community in the entertainment biz in Los Angeles and to spread any useful knowledge we might have. Seth goes into detail about his on set experience with Mr. Robin Williams.
