In this week's episode of the Xtalks Life Science Podcast, host Ayesha Rashid, Senior Life Science Journalist at Xtalks.com, spoke with Juan Domínguez-Bendala, PhD, Director of Stem Cell and Pancreatic Regeneration Programs, Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami, to discuss his research team's new research published in Nature Communications that could redefine diabetes treatment. Dr. Domínguez-Bendala team's study reveals how THR-123, a small peptide, can trigger the regeneration of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, effectively restoring normal blood sugar levels in preclinical models. The discovery opens the door to a potential new class of regenerative therapies for insulin-dependent diabetes, offering hope for millions of patients worldwide. Dr. Domínguez-Bendala's scientific journey includes a PhD he earned under Dr. Jim McWhir, co-creator of Dolly the sheep, to pioneering research in human embryonic stem cells at the University of Miami's Diabetes Research Institute, where he now leads his own lab and chairs the university's Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee. Tune in to hear how Dr. Domínguez-Bendala's team's findings could change the way we think about diabetes and the promise of teaching the pancreas to heal itself. The Hollywood Reporter dropped a “definitive” Top 25 sports-movie list… so we grabbed our gadgets (Nuke, Recast, Rocket, Sniper, Switcheroo, and the brand-new Double Tap) and blew it up. Chaos ensues. Friendships wobble. Space Jam soars. OJ: Made in America gets the boot. And yes, we argue about Hoosiers like our playoff lives depend on it.What you'll hear:Defining what actually counts as a sports movie (docs vs. dramas vs. “there's a ball in one scene”)Nukes dropped on sacred cows, Recasts that sneak in sleepers, and dizzying Switcheroos.Shock upsets: The Sandlot rockets up, A League of Their Own jumps the order, Rocky refuses to stay downGuest Brian John shows up over-prepared and under-mercifulThink THR nailed it? Think we're monsters? Either way, you're going to have feelings. Hit play, yell at your speakers, then tell us what we busted right—and what needs busting next.

Could less waiting time reduce stress on a marriage and how can couples strengthen their relationships in the face of life challenges? Synopsis: Every second Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests. With HDB planning to introduce more Shorter Waiting Time (SWT) Build-To-Order (BTO) flats, buyers can expect to collect keys in under three years, reducing the amount of stress on the couple relationship, say an economist and a counsellor. How can young couples decide if they have found the right life partners to take on the wait for a BTO flat? In this episode, ST assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong hosts two guests. Thr first is National University of Singapore's Professor of Real Estate and Economics Sumit Agarwal. He penned a study on the correlation between early marriages, a higher propensity for divorce and waiting times for a BTO, that was featured in the third book in a series - Kiasunomics 3: Economic Insights For Everyday Life. The book overall, analyses the influence and consequences of economic decisions in Singapore. The second is Mr Neo Eng Huat, a counsellor with over 20 years of experience with helping couples. Today I'm joined by Dr. Juan Domínguez-Bendala, someone I know we'll all be hearing a lot more about in the T1D world. He's the Director of the Pancreatic Regeneration and Stem Cell Laboratory at the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami. His team just made headlines with a huge breakthrough: using a small peptide called THR-123 to regenerate insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This could be an entirely new approach to treating, and even potentially reversing, type 1 diabetes. We know how emotional and complex the topic of a cure can be, and sometimes disheartening when updates are few and far between. That's why sharing research-focused conversations like this matters so much– so our community can stay informed, feel seen, and keep hope alive for what's happening behind the scenes. If this episode resonates with you, please share it so it can reach every person living with or impacted by T1D.Quick Takeaways:The biggest breakthrough for a T1D cure that has been made in awhile: THR-123 Milestones in diabetes research over the last two decades How this could shape the future of regenerative treatment for T1DRole of AI in diabetes research How to support diabetes research and stay informed
