It's sort of a weird hybrid of Disney Channel movie and Ryan Murphy project -- which, if you're familiar with the old 2000s television show "Popular," makes sense -- but is it able to pull off such a weird tone mixed with a preposterous plot conceit? This Easter Sunday, Ryan Murphy brings a message from John 20 titled "I Have Seen the Lord." Drawing from Mary Magdalene's encounter with the risen Jesus at the empty tomb, Ryan unpacks what the resurrection means not just as a historical event, but as a living reality that changes everything — identity, pain, purpose, and the future of the world.Walking through the disciples' sprint to the tomb, Mary's weeping outside it, and her stunning face-to-face encounter with the risen Christ, this message meets people exactly where they are — whether they come in celebration or in tears. Ryan makes clear that the resurrection isn't only for those who have it together. There had to be a cross before there was an empty tomb, and there had to be weeping before there was a name spoken in a garden.The sermon moves through four resurrection realities: that we have a new identity — loved by God regardless of what we do, have, or what others think; that God sees our tears and walks with us in our pain rather than rushing us out of it; that new creation has begun and everything broken in the first garden is being made right in this one; and that we have been commissioned — like Mary, the first evangelist — as ambassadors of that new creation, sent into our city to announce that Jesus is alive.Ultimately, this is an invitation to see him. Whether for the first time, or again after a long season away, Jesus is still in the business of proving himself alive — in healing, in freedom, in joy that can't be explained. It's an absolutely packed episode a week away from the Oscars. We're playing some catch-up with nominees and we've got one monster of a new release. Here's what we have for you: THE BRIDE! That exclamation point says it all. Writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal's wild and bold update of "The Bride of Frankenstein" mixes tones and genres in a way that's dividing critics (including us). Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale co-star. In theaters. THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB. The last of the five nominees in the best international feature category for us to discuss here. Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania mixes the real-life audio of a 5-year-old Palestinian trapped in a car in Gaza with actors playing the emergency operators on the other end of the line. We don't agree on this film, either, but it has moved many audiences deeply. Available for online rental. THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR. Nominated for best documentary feature, this Netflix film is composed entirely of deputies' body cam footage of a neighborhood where a deadly shooting ripped the multicultural community apart. We think this is the front-runner for the Academy Award, if only because it's probably the one most people saw (plus, it's great). Streaming now. MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN. Russian school teacher Pavel Talankin bravely documents Putin's propagandist efforts to indoctrinate young minds at the start of the Ukraine invasion. You come to really care about him and the kids in his care, particularly the teens who are facing an uncertain future. This is also up for the best documentary feature Oscar.
