Theater Guilde on The Air || (15) The Royal Family | (17) Knickerbocker Holiday || December 16, 1945; December 30, 194501:22 - The Royal Family is a witty and flamboyant Kaufman and Ferber play that parodies the legendary Barrymore theatrical family. It follows three generations of a prominent acting dynasty dealing with eccentric personal lives, backstage drama, and the comedic conflict of wanting to leave the chaotic world of show business for normal life.56:22 - A musical play about New York some 300 years ago. In it the author is having a little fun with history gently kidding some of New York's Dutch forefathers among whom you'll note there was, even then, a Roosevelt and a Vanderbilt and of course the Roosevelt was in politics. Drew Barrymore spent her childhood charming audiences on movie screens and cramming cocaine up her nose at the most exclusive clubs in the country. Her breakout role as Gertie in E.T.: The Extraterrestrial rocketed her to such far-reaching fame that she became a regular at Studio 54 when she was only 7 years old. Her early taste for unchaperoned nightlife would lure her into other exceptionally adult addictions, nearly extinguishing her flourishing film career before Drew reached high school. As Drew’s grandfather and father before her already proved, no one acts – or parties – quite like a Barrymore. No one crashes and burns quite like a Barrymore, either. Phil and Emily are joined by film critic and author Jason Bailey to revisit Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, George Clooney's 2002 directorial debut based on Chuck Barris' unauthorized autobiography. Jason is the author of Gandolfini: The Real Life of the Man Who Made Tony Soprano, now available in paperback.Chuck Barris created The Dating Game and The Gong Show. He also claimed to have secretly killed 33 people for the CIA. Charlie Kaufman wrote the screenplay, Sam Rockwell stars as Barris, and Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts co-star. Before Clooney made it, the film passed through David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky, Sam Mendes, Bryan Singer, Johnny Depp, Ben Stiller, Sean Penn, and Mike Myers over nearly a decade of development. The three dig into what Clooney kept and what he stripped from Kaufman's original script, whether Sam Rockwell's performance holds the whole thing together, and what Roberts and Barrymore bring to a film that never quite commits to its own tonal chaos. They also get into Clooney's arc as a director, a genuinely promising debut followed by a filmography of diminishing returns, and whether Confessions of a Dangerous Mind holds up as his most interesting work two decades on.Jason says yes, unequivocally. Emily loved it then and is reconsidering. Phil never fully clicked with it. They all agree the ending is something close to perfect.+Follow the show and guests:Podcast Like It's... https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeitsPhil Iscove: https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James: https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsJason Bailey: https://www.instagram.com/jasondashbaileyPatreon (bonus episodes and video): http://patreon.com/Podcastlikeits Hosted on Acast. Ethel Barrymore: Shy Empress of the Footlights unveils the captivating duality of one of America's most revered theatrical legends. Known for her poise, talent, and commanding presence on stage, Ethel Barrymore was paradoxically a woman of deep reserve and quiet introspection. This richly detailed biography offers an intimate portrait of the First Lady of the American Theatre, tracing her journey from the gilded footlights of Broadway to the screens of early Hollywood. This book explores how Barrymore's quiet strength shaped a dynasty―and how her shy soul reigned behind the curtain of fame. A must-read for lovers of theater, classic film, and untold stories of iconic women.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week we're dusting off our ruffled shirts and setting our time machines to the 1980s as we revisit The Wedding Singer (1998), a rom-com that's equal parts sweet, silly, and synth-soaked.Directed by Frank Coraci and starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, this nostalgic crowd-pleaser finds Sandler in perhaps his most charming role as Robbie Hart, a down-on-his-luck wedding singer trying to recover from heartbreak. After being jilted at the altar, Robbie befriends Julia (Barrymore), a waitress engaged to a Grade-A sleazeball, and the two strike up a will-they-won't-they friendship filled with awkward moments, big hair, and a killer retro soundtrack. The Wedding Singer balances slapstick with sincerity and is elevated by the natural chemistry between its leads. Barrymore's sweetness softens Sandler's usual chaos, making for a genuinely endearing romantic pairing. And let's not forget Christine Taylor, Steve Buscemi's brilliant drunken best man speech, and Billy Idol playing himself in one of the most gloriously absurd plane-based finales ever filmed. The movie also serves as a love letter to the 1980s, cramming in everything from breakdancing to New Wave fashion to Wall Street-era villainy. It's unashamedly sentimental, but also knowingly daft—like a mixtape of cheesy love songs and punchy jokes that somehow hits all the right notes.Whether you grew up in the ‘80s or just wish you had, The Wedding Singer delivers that warm, fuzzy vibe that makes it ideal for rewatching with mates—or maybe even at a wedding.

This week, the pod dives into the best Drew Barrymore-Adam Sandler flick of all time, The Wedding Singer (1998). After the show's impromptu hiatus (thank you, LAFSters, for your patience!), has Madison finally picked her first rom com of the season? Either way, Chelsea has a bone to pick with Barrymore and stands firm that Sandler is not the comedic genius Hollywood seems to think he is. Plus both our hosts have questions about the wedding industry, finance bros, and why women settle.Connect With UsFollow us on Instagram @loveatfirstscreening or send an email to loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every Wednesday to find out.

Barrymore plays a woman, Lucy, who had suffered brain trauma, and when she goes to sleep, her brain resets to that same day. Sandler's Henry Roth falls in love with her and wants to create a life with her, despite this very large limitation. Psychological concepts of memory, consolidation, learning, and consent are explored, even through all the hilarious moments that make most laugh out loud! Join Jim and Greg today we they cheer Jerry Seinfeld for correctly accusing the woke left of killing comedy as we knew it for generations, hammer the administrators at Columbia University for continuing to let the inmates run the asylum, and cringing as Drew Barrymore (and way too many other Americans) see themselves as the children of our politicians.First, they agree wholeheartedly with comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld's contention that the woke left's obsession with never being offended has effectively killed television comedies and many other forms of the art. And Jim adds that comedy is also a problem for the left because it helps people see their shared life experiences...and that's bad for a movement who is constantly seeking to divide us.Next, they unload on the president and other administrators at Columbia University. After setting another deadline for the pro-Hamas, anti-Israel demonstrators to clear their encampment, there were no consequences when the protesters ignored it. Later, the campus radicals took over an academic building and administrators thus far doing nothing about it.Finally, they groan as TV host Drew Barrymore tells Vice President Kamala Harris, "We need you to be Momala for the country."Jim and Greg explain why they think it is painfully wrong for Americans to think of themselves as the children of our political leaders, but they look back at a cringeworthy moment from a presidential campaign decades ago that provided momentum for this warped notion.
