The Run is a comic book podcast where we look at various runs in depth be it a certain character, creator, or storyline.
The Age of Apocalypse is in our rearview mirror so it's time for a palette cleanser before we dive into our next miniseries! We take a look at the Christmas classic (?????): Klaus. Written by Grant Morrison art by Dan Mora and published by Boom studios. Morrison decided to take a swing at the origin of Santa Claus, is it some reddit tier epic bacon nonsense or a delightful romp full of yuletide cheer? Okay look you know the pandemic and 19 is affecting people, we've been busy. Its not over but here is an episode where we read some mail and start a new segment where we read bad (see: all) CBR articles. Next episode we will be back reading the 10th anniversary of AOA which may be the final episode for this run, Still debatable if we want to read the 2012 series. XOXO Dave. ALSO my dumb ass didn't disable my webcam mic so I sound a little weird, I edited the audio to the best of my ability. Sorry if I sound like some carny. Jonathan and Chris sound good though.
Well we finally get to the flagship X-men books and the 'Earth Shattering'* conclusion to maybe the most over hyped event in X-Men and or comic book history! So as mentioned last episode the mixer crapped the bed but I'm giving a Cliffs Notes version of what happened in gambit and the Externals. I'm sure we will go over a few things at the top of next episode.
You have a chance to mess around and remake Wolverine in a horrible wasteland what do you do? Make him say dumb shit like "Malarkey" of course! There's also a preamble at the beginning about how or mixer decided to shit the bed. I apologize as I tried to fix the audio to the best of my ability. Ah yes the age of apocalypse. We are finally here and we get to see the hellworld for what its worth and the backstory that fills in some of the gaps. Its been a bit but we are back to finally kick off the much applauded and never lauded (???????) Age of Apocalypse! Is this really the greatest non 'days of future past' dystopian superhero story? Before we do that we need to see how the AOA came to be and we dive into the prelude: Legion Quest where we get to relive a young Charles Xavier tell a young Magneto every 6 panels about his dream for peace. Note: I cleaned up the audio so I apologize for uneven levels ahead of time time to buy a new mixer. So we needed a buffer before we started another comic book run and after mulling it over we decided to take an objective look at Rob Liefelds controversial Youngblood series from 1992! The creator of Deadpool and Cable left Marvel comics to start the creator owned company Image comics with five other prominent artists and was the first to release a book for the company. How did it go? Was it as bad as everyone says? We dive into it and try to look for some good here. Dave also did a pouch count across the 11 issues and Jonathan and Chris play an exciting game of "Liefeld or Not"! We also reveal what our next Run is going to be! Youngblood was originally published in Youngblood (1992) Vol.1 Issues#0-10 Did you like the show? Tell a friend! Questions? Comments? Death Threats? Email us at: therunpod@gmail.com
The epilogue to the epilogue to the epilogue! Knightfall is over but 2 out of the 3 major players kind of just farted out of existence. What happened to Bane after he awoke from his coma? How did Jean Paul retake his Azrael mantle after becoming homeless and distraught? What was our final thoughts on this monumental run? I could spoil it for you or you could just listen to it. Tune in next episode for a very special One-Shot episode on a book that is sure to frustrate everyone! Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Comment? therunpod@gmail.com
The epilogue to Knightfall! With another epilogue to the epilogue! We finally see Nightwing as Batman and surprisingly get an answer to why Bruce didn't pick him as his successor. Does it tie everything together? Do we finally get some resolution to where Jean Paul went?..................kinda? This story was originally published in: Batman: 512-515 Batman: Shadow of the Bat: 32-35 Detective Comics: 679-682 Robin: 11-14 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Dave is sick as hell but that wont stop us from seeing what appears to be the end of Azraels time as Batman, with the lowest of lows after the last few episodes this *has* to be good by default. Right? Come for the edge, stay for the confusing references to a villain that showed up for a few issues in the sword of Azrael mini-series that no one bothered to explain at the time! Also Chris didn't join us for the initial recording but he shows up for a separate recording for his thoughts in the last 20 mins. This story was originally published: Batman: 509-510 Detective Comics: 676-677 Shadow of the Bat: 29-30 Batman Legends of the Dark Knight: 62-63 Catwoman: 12-13 Robin: 8-9 Showcase '94: 10 Did you like The Run? So how did Bruce Wayne rescue Doctor Kinsolving and Jack Drake? How did he heal his back? Lazarus Pit? You would think that! This story is so dreadful it made us excited to see Azrael show up. There is a reason this was never reprinted in trade format until recently! The Search was originally published in: Justice League Task Force #5-6 Shadow of the Bat: #21-23 Legends of the Dark Knight: #59-61 Robin: #7 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? The first DC / Marvel crossover in 10 years pits Azrael up against Punisher where they must join forces to foil a plot by all around crappy Punisher antagonist, Jigsaw, who wants to *squints at book* light the Gotham Reservoir on fire.................so he can build a new one and make money from it. I see. This was originally published in Punisher/Batman: Lake of Fire One-shot Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Comments? More erotic fan fiction???? therunpod@gmail.com
The meta commentary on 90's comics continues! Theres a new Batman in town and he sucks ass! Azrael is now protecting Gotham city but all he can do is get angry and super horny. The Crusade was originally published in: Detective Comics #667-675 Batman #501-508 Shadow of the Bat #19-20, 24-28 Catwoman #6-7 Showcase '94 #7 Robin #1-2 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Okay so 'The Crusade' is like 28 issues long and we needed a lot of time to read that stuff so in the mean time Dave and Jonathan look at the Bat-Mite parody book: "Mitefall" which came out after the whole saga finished. Is it as annoying as it sounds or was it actually enjoyable? The books we look at are Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #38 and the Mitefall One-shot. Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Sorry for the delay folks! This episode is all about the aftermath of Brucey baby dealing with chronic back pain and having some psycho nerd fill in for the mantle of the Batman and how absurd his judgement is. Two Face has always sucked ass. Oh we also talk about Chris going to an amateur porn festival right of the start so uh be aware of your surroundings when playing this. Who rules the night was originally published in Detective Comics #664-666, Showcase '93 #7-8, Shadow of the Bat #16-18, and Batman #498-500 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Batman returns? Howzabout Chris returns! Bane's plan to make sleepy Batman become broken Batman is finally here! How does Bats deal with this gauntlet? Shouldn't Azrael be more prominent? Find out which cover is our favorite cover (It switches around a lot). We talk about Tarot: Witch of the rose (It's not good folks) Dave sings the Garfield and Friends song and we read that listener question we mentioned from last episode! Broken Bat was originally published in Batman #491-497 and Detective Comics #659-663 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Comment? therunpod@gmail.com
The final backstory until Knightfall! Everyone hates Lucius Fox! We can't figure out what Bruce Waynes companies are called! Headhunter, who is quite possibly the worst villain of all time! Don't roast Metalhead for his dumb costume or else! Justin Timberlake looking Killer Croc! Bane finally getting his ass out of that dumb chair! All this and more as we see the final issues leading directly into Knightfall! This story was originally published in BATMAN #484-491 and DETECTIVE COMICS #654-658. Did you like The Run? WHO IS BANE? WHO IS BIRD? (No one has ever asked that). A short and sweet origin ep about the big baddie and his henchmen that eventually will take out Batman. This story was originally published in "Batman: Vengeance of Bane" #1 Did you like The Run? Tell a friend! Questions? Comment? therunpod@gmail.com Special Note: Norm Breyfogle, an artist on Batman during this time, passed away over the weekend. It hasnt been made public yet but he has been recovering from a stroke since 2014. As we march towards Knightfall proper, we need to introduce you to the fella who is gonna take over as Batman: Azrael. Jonathan is flummoxed as the spirit of Rob Liefeld is alive and well in this book folks! We're talking guns with giant screws that would embarass Cable himself and goofy troll men. This storyline was originally published in "Batman: Sword of Azrael" #1-#4.
Knightfall! A Batman story where we wonder what happens when Batman stops being Batman and is replaced with another cooler (????) Batman. However before we get into how the Bat was broken and replaced with an edgelord we decide to go through some low key backstory starting with "Venom", where Batman decides to do drugs! This storyline is published originally in "Legends of the dark knight" #16-#20
