The Secret Origins of Mint Condition

The Secret Origins of Mint Condition

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2026 59:41

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoWell, Spring has sprung! It's time to throw open the back door toMint Condition and let the fresh air in! Join your hosts James and Joe as they catch all the latest buzz that's wafting through the pop culture universe. And that vernal breeze carries a ton of topics to be discussed and disseminated:   Movie and TV trailers ranging from the streets of New York(Spider-Man:Brand New Day), to far off worlds (Supergirl), to middle America tracking two space cops (Lanterns), to Hollywood (Wonder Man), and the "heart and soul" of an avenging android (Visionquest). And as is the case on any spring day, the winds can come from many directions: From the Alpha Quadrant and an examination of Star Trek, and then the entire MCU in general.  And what store chat would be complete without pontificating about our favorite comics? There's the DC comics Superman/Spider-Man crossover to be dissected. Comic artists and writers upping their game to bring dynamic stories to their loyal fans. Dan Mora, Jorge Jimenez, Bruno Redondo, Brian Hitch, Gary Frak, Jeremy Adams, Joshua Williamsion, Mark Waid, Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire to name a select few who are hitting it out the park. And also a tad of philosophical queries: Can the industry survive if Marvel doesn't up their creative output? And are DC comic fans fed up to their nostrils with one Crisis after another? Can you become allergic to too many reboots?  And if that isn't enough to whet your fanboy appetite, how about a dive into the world of The PBA (Professional Bowlers Association)? The boys critique the new HBOMax mini series "Born to Bowl". Wait? What? Bowling? Yeah! It's a fun, yet detailed look at the life of a pro bowler on the 2025 tour. When James and Joe (a bowling lifer) get done, you will know the names of Kyle Troup. EJ Tackett, and Jason Bemonte. And there will be a pop quiz on axis tilt, oil patterns, skid, hook, roll, and equipment. And if the PBA isn't your bag the NFL, MLB, NBA, and the NHL--and GOALIE fights--manage to come flowingin on a wild flurry of fanatical filler to finish out the episode!   Take your Zyrtec, grab a box of Kleenex, throw on the old AC and enjoy mother nature's green explosion while reading the latest copy of Superman! Hey, it beats 30 inches of snow and an afternoon temperature of six!

So, what did everyone do last weekend? For the guys of the Worst Comic Podcast Ever, well, we manned the Hero Initiative table at Planet Comicon. We set up at Boulevard Brewery for a drink and draw fundraiser. We hosted five panels with the likes of Dan Mora, Adam Kubert, Paul Dini, Chris Claremont, and many more. We did a live podcast panel complete with guest artists. And somehow, we even made time to record our next Book Club episode! This time, we are travelling back to the mid-1980s as we revisit the Teen Titans for The Judas Contract, where the Titans discovered a traitor on their team, Jericho signs up for the team (see what I did there!), and Dick Grayson finally decides on a new costumed identity. Written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Perez, this is THE Teen Titans story to read. Recorded on the con floor, Jerry, John, and Cullen are joined by loyal listener Eric Haar as we dissect this storyline.  Stick around to the very end to find out about next month's selection for WCPE Book Club. We return to the MCU, and we stick with a story from the 1980s, but it's set in the far future.  We would love to hear your comments on the show. The Faqs Project

Today we have Joseph Illidge back on the pod. Mr. Illidge is someone I hold in high regard as one of the many architects that gave us Milestone Comics with characters such as Hardware, Icon, Rocket, The Blood Syndicate, and Static. The New History of the DC Universe was release in late February, but around late January Mr. Illidge put on a 100k unit selling challenge to embolden the many fans of Milestone to come and show support for a book that some may deem the powers that be may be against. Joe, breaks down the miseducation of comic book fans in real time and further discussed the meaning of Final Order Cutoff's that most comic fans barely know about. The objective was to create demand because a company like DC/Warner Bros. sees profit, there becomes a reason to gain from it. Meaning make more books! It was announced recently that a second printing for the book is in pre order now with a cover of Static by Dan Mora. The story itself serves as an allegory throughly struck by the books opening line a quote from Langston Hughes poem "Harlem". What is a dream deferred? Beacon is sent into the past to correct a nexus event that under government force, suppressed Dakota's Heroes so they had no choice but to never use their powers again. Mr. Illidge focuses on fans reluctance to support a book and yet wonder why they haven't seen those heroes for months or years on end. The fans have been misled in not knowing their own power of doing enough to keep their favorite stories alive. As the story shows us, its a story of survival not if you survive, but how you survive.Written by Joseph Illidge, Morgan Hampton, Stephanie Williams, and Nikolas Draper-IveyArtwork by Edwin Galmon, Fico Ossio, Carlo Pagulayan, and Valenine DeLandro

Is DC K.O. Knightfight the best Batman story of 2026? Today we're reviewing the high-octane miniseries by Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora. After the shocking elimination of Bruce Wayne in DC K.O. #1, the Dark Knight finds himself trapped in a series of twisted futures created by the Heart of Apokolips. We break down Bruce's brutal gauntlet as he faces off against the "Batmen of the Future"—his own former Robins! From Nightwing's global "Robin Inc." to Jason Todd's totalitarian prison state and Tim Drake's obsessive detective world, we analyze how this series explores Batman's greatest fears about his legacy. Plus, we discuss that emotional finale in Issue #4 featuring Damian Wayne and the grandson Bruce never knew he had. In this video, we cover: The "Bat-Slop" Appeal: Why this over-the-top action series works so well. Student vs. Master: Analyzing the fights between Bruce and Dick, Jason, and Tim. Dan Mora's Art: Is this the best looking Batman book on the stands? The Heart of Apokolips: How this tie-in connects back to the main DC K.O. tournament. The Ending: Does Bruce Wayne finally find a future where he can be happy? Which future Batman was your favorite? Let me know in the comments if you think Bruce should have stayed in the "Good Ending" world!

This week on Fantastic Forum, we are jumping into three big releases across comics and streaming. First up is DC/Marvel: Batman Deadpool #1, the historic crossover one shot published by DC. Written by Grant Morrison with art by Dan Mora, this issue throws the Dark Knight and the Merc with a Mouth into a chaotic collision that only two universes crashing together could spark. Morrison brings the meta madness, Mora delivers the kinetic spectacle, and we are unpacking whether this landmark comic sticks the landing on one of the wildest crossovers in modern superhero history. Then we turn to Pluribus on Apple TV, the brand new sci fi drama from Vince Gilligan, starring Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka. The show follows Carol as the rest of humanity is suddenly joined into a hive mind that seeks to amicably assimilate immune individuals into itself. Is this another hit series from Gilligan? We'll give you our take. Finally, we dive into Star Wars Visions Season 3, the latest anthology series featuring bold, inventive animated shorts from studios around the world. From mythic interpretations to stylish experiments, we are talking about which episodes stand out, which push Star Wars storytelling forward, and which ones you will want to rewatch the moment the credits roll. Jace and Rocky are back for another Comic Boom / Comic Source DC Spotlight, digging into 11 titles for the week of December 3rd, 2025 as the holidays ramp up and Jace teases his upcoming YouTube gift guides and "fireside chat" creator series before diving into eleven new DC titles that make up a solid if not spectacular week, with standout entries like Absolute Green Lantern, Batman, Poison Ivy, JSA, Gotham Academy, and the finale of Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League earning praise for strong pacing, character work, and the always-stellar art of Nicholas Scott. After noting how surprisingly close their rankings are this week, the conversation shifts into the DC KO tie-ins, beginning with a sharp dismissal of Batman: Night Fight #2 as a predictable, creatively hollow retread that squanders Dan Mora's brilliant art on yet another tired "Batman vs. the Bat-Family" setup with inconsistent tournament mechanics and no real stakes. By contrast, DC KO: Superman vs. Captain Atom #1 sparks a more nuanced discussion, as Rocky reassesses his assumptions about the moral framework of the tournament while both hosts admire Sean Isaacs' energetic visuals and the multiversal iterations on display, even as Jace expresses frustration at seeing Captain Atom once again portrayed as easily corrupted instead of realizing the potential shown in his strongest past interpretations. They dig into the murky logic of the fight's resolution, the ongoing characterization challenges for Captain Atom, and the broader editorial realities guiding DC KO, before wrapping up with a quick rundown of this week's facsimiles and collections—including classic Golden Age Superman material, the DC manga box set, Hitman by Ennis and McCrea, and the Judas Contract deluxe edition—and closing out with holiday well-wishes as Absolute Green Lantern, Poison Ivy, and Cheetah & Cheshire anchor the top of their weekly rankings.

Toward the end of our last conversation with Grant Morrison, they mentioned how they would soon be returning to comics, writing a new Batman story. We were ecstatic to hear, but we could not have possibly imagined that the new Batman story would actually be a DC/Marvel Comics crossover featuring the Hollywood darling Deadpool. Even better, it's a reunion between Morrison and his Klaus collaborator, Dan Mora, which also features numerous backup stories by other rad creators, including Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Hayden Sherman, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Amanda Conner, G. Willow Wilson, and Denys Cowan. The comic is possibly the most surprising book of the year, but not as surprising as Morrison's willingness to return to the show for an in-depth discussion all about it. You're in for another treat, friends. Our Grant Morrison Batman/Deadpool conversation is full-spoilers. You must read the comic before pressing play. If you read the book quickly, as our Brad did the first time, you'll probably miss a great deal. The comic is crammed with Easter eggs and winks, many of which we eventually caught, and a few others we did not until Grant Morrison pointed them out to us. Dan Mora and Grant Morrison's Batman/Deadpool is very different from Greg Capullo and Zeb Wells' Deadpool/Batman, which Marvel ran point on a few weeks ago. It's a fun adventure, but it's also a story commenting on comics, crossovers, and the writer/reader's relationship with the fourth wall. Initially, the team-up between Batman and Deadpool felt a little cynical, and/or capitalistic - and it's still that! However, given Grant Morrison's relationship with Animal Man and smashing the fourth wall, Deadpool is kind of the perfect character for them. Batman/Deadpool also allows Grant Morrison to right a wrong that occurred in the pages of...well, read the comic first, will ya? Dear listeners, welcome to Grant Morrisoin's Revenge! Batman has an 85-year legacy filled with reinvention. What made now the right time to bring the Dark Knight into the Skybox Metal Universe, and why was he chosen as the first DC hero to headline this line?2. Metal Universe is known for its cutting-edge printing innovations — from etched foil to die-cuts and lenticular cards. Can you walk us through the technology that makes these cards stand out physically in-hand and how that translates to the Gotham aesthetic?3. Each Metal Universe line has its own visual identity, whether cosmic, heroic, or elemental. How did your team translate Batman's world — all shadow, grit, and neon — into the visual language of the brand?4. This set spans decades of Gotham history. What was the process for selecting which eras, storylines, and character designs to include, and how did you balance nostalgia with innovation?5. The set features signatures from legendary creators like Gail Simone and Marv Wolfman. What does it mean to have the actual architects of Gotham's mythology participate in this project, and how do their cards fit into the collector experience?6. How do you feel about people selling these on ebay?7. How do you pick out art?8. Your thoughts on the use of a.i. art?8. Can you tease any product on the way?9. (Fun one!) If you were designing your own “Grant Sandground” insert card for the set, what kind of foil finish or chase rarity would it have — and which Gotham character would you want to share a dual card with?

You still have a few days to back this project! You've long been known for your concept-driven, highly stylized covers—how does it feel to see your Marvel career collected in such a high-end format like The Marvel Art of Mike Del Mundo?Looking back at your early breakout work, like your X-Men Legacy covers, how do you think your style or approach has evolved since then? The new art book includes never-before-seen pieces and a companion sketchbook—can you walk us through your process from sketch to final composition? How does your mindset shift when moving from cover art to sequential work? How do you balance surrealism, symbolism, and storytelling in a single image—especially when working on iconic characters with decades of history?Of all the covers and interiors featured in the book, is there one piece that holds particular personal meaning for you? What do you hope readers and fans take away from seeing your sketches alongside the final printed pieces? You've also been doing incredible world-building in 3 Worlds / 3 Moons with Jonathan Hickman—how does that creator-owned space challenge or expand your approach compared to Marvel work? What advice would you give to artists trying to push boundaries or find their own visual voice within superhero comics today? If you could design a cover for any Marvel character doing something completely unexpected—like Hulk as a ballet dancer or Doctor Doom hosting a cooking show—what would it be, and how would you make it look cool?
