Decades later, Cori says not enough has been done to keep those bat species, which act as natural pest control, from becoming endangered. As wind energy developments continue to pop up in a rush to add renewables to the grid, the question looms: will we be able to do enough to keep both climate solutions on the landscape?

Send us a textBats can carry several viruses that can kills humans. Some well understood – rabies, the deadliest virus of all, is transmitted directly from bats to people from bat bites. Other viruses, such as Hendra virus, are a little more mysterious and indirect in how they spread. And researchers are still unsure how viruses such as Ebola, Marburg and the coronavirus that caused Covid-19 get from bats to people. However, a team working in the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda may have just gotten a big clue.Bosco Atukwatse, a Ugandan wildlife biologist working with the Kyambura Lion Project, set up solar-powered cameras near the mouth of Python Cave in the Maramagambo Forest in the park. He knew the cave was home to multitudes of Egyptian fruit bats and was hoping for pictures of leopards and spotted hyenas. What he got were dozens of images of animals hunting the bats. Birds, snakes, giant lizards called monitors, a very persistent leopard, monkeys, baboons, and a catlike animal called a genet all regularly hunted in the cave. This behavior was notable on its own. But the bats in this cave are also known to be infected with Marburg virus, a rare but deadly virus that can cause a hemorrhagic fever. Two visitors to the cave had been infected with Marburg, including a Dutch tourist who died in 2008 and a U.S. tourist. The findings don't prove that animals who hunt bats are spreading Marburg, says Dr. Alex Braczkowski, Science Director of the Kyambura Lion Project, who reported the discovery on the open repository site Zenodo. They do, however, provide a starting point for possible further investigations.Listen as Alex and Bosco chat with One World, One Health host Maggie Fox about the bats, the animals that hunt them, and what it all might mean.

AI Superalignment, Superintelligence Book: If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies

By David Stephen There is a recent [September 19, 2025] book review in The Atlantic, The Useful Idiots of AI Doomsaying, stating that, "The authors' basic claim is that AI will continue to improve, getting smarter and smarter, until it either achieves superintelligence or designs something that will. Without careful training, they argue, the goals of this supreme being would be incompatible with human life. Their larger argument is that if humans build something that eclipses human intelligence, it will be able to outsmart us however it chooses, for its own self-serving goals. The risks are so grave, the authors argue, that the only solution is a complete shutdown of AI research." Superintelligence : If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies "This line of thinking takes as a given that intelligence is a discrete, measurable concept, and that increasing it is a matter of resources and processing power. But intelligence doesn't work like that. The human ability to predict and steer situations is not a single, broadly applicable skill or trait - someone may be brilliant in one area and trash in another. Einstein wasn't a great novelist; the chess champion Bobby Fischer was a paranoid conspiracy theorist. We even see this across species: Most humans can do many cognitive tasks that bats can't, but no human can naturally match a bat's ability to hunt for prey by quickly integrating complex echolocation data." "They give no citation to the scientific literature for this claim, because there isn't a consensus on it. This is just one of many unwarranted logical and factual leaps in If Anyone Builds It. Along the way to such drastic conclusions, Yudkowsky and Soares fail to make an evidence-based scientific case for their claims. Instead, they rely on flat assertions and shaky analogies, leaving massive holes in their logic. The largest of these is the idea of superintelligence itself, which the authors define as "a mind much more capable than any human at almost every sort of steering and prediction problem."" What is the 'evidence-based scientific case' for human intelligence? If there is no known science of the mechanism of human intelligence and there is no general definition for human intelligence, then it is probably meritless to disdain predictions of risks - of an emerging non-biological intelligence. It is possible to have an issue with the extremisms of 'AI will solve everything' and that 'AI will kill everyone', but to do so without proposing what exactly human intelligence is or how it works, is also 'unwarranted logical and factual leap'. What is ahead, if AI improves, may remain unknown, but what large language models [LLMs] currently are, should frighten those who are seeking out human intelligence. In the human brain, assuming chair is a memory, intelligence is the use of that chair. While it appears that knowing things and using them sometimes go together, intelligence can be defined as the use of what is known for expected, desired or advantageous outcomes. Although planning, creativity, innovation and so forth intersect with this definition, intelligence can be broadly assumed to be how knowledge is used. This means that knowing is one layer, then using that knowledge for outcomes is another. In general, humans are trained both for knowledge and intelligence, since it is possible to have knowledge but not the intelligence for it. Across organisms, survival is mostly a play of using what is known. Avoiding predators, catching prey, other necessities for life are knowing and using. Bats can use 'echolocation data' and humans can't, naturally, while humans can use complex languages but bats, cannot. [Knowing and using.] While knowing can be basic sensory interpretation in memory, using can be aligned with ability. So, there are abilities to use what is known. For humans, abilities to use memory, including with language, exceed other organisms. LLMs have a wider memory use capability now - with data, algorithms and compute. ...

Fungus that causes white-nose syndrome in bats detected in Oregon

Think Out Loud

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2025 14:12

White-nose syndrome is a fungal disease that grows on hibernating bats, causing them to wake up in the winter. The bats then burn up their fat stores while searching for food and die as a result. The disease was first detected in the northeastern U.S. in 2006 and has since spread to 40 U.S. states.   The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife recently announced that the fungus that causes the disease has been detected in bat excrement, or guano, from a bat roost at Lewis and Clark National Historic Park in Clatsop County. While no bats in the state have been observed with symptoms of white-nose syndrome yet, it’s the first documented case of the fungus in Oregon.   Emily Armstrong Buck is a wildlife health lab biologist at ODFW and the agency’s white-nose syndrome surveillance coordinator. She joins us to talk about the spread of the disease and what it could mean for Oregon bat populations.

It's a little-known fact that bats are one of the most successful animals on Earth, with almost 1,500 different species currently identified. Their agility in flight and prowess as hunters, wide-ranging diversity in size and behaviour and ability to adapt to almost any environment have allowed them to conquer almost every corner of the globe. But despite their success, many species of bats are now under threat. In this episode, we're joined by ecologist and neurobiologist Prof Yossi Yuval to talk about his latest book, The Genius Bat – Understanding our Most Mysterious Mammal. He gives us a breakdown of bats' sophisticated ability to ‘see' the world using sound, tells us how despite their reputation as terrifying blood-thirsty predators, vampire bats have highly developed social networks and will even share their meals with other members of their roosts, and also explains how the loss of bats could have a huge effect on the ecosystems in which they live. They take your calls and texts, and discuss the Jays offence - after just four hits and a walk, was this a result of poor swing decisions, or does Rays starter Ian Seymour deserve more credit? Plus, they get into the six innings of one-run ball from Kevin Gausman, and lookahead to Chris Bassitt's start in the series finale. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

Top musicians are taking their music off Spotify and leaving the platform behind – but why? Kiwi musicians like Tiki Taane and The Bats have joined overseas acts like Deerhoof and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard in boycotting the platform, accusing it of exploitation, poor royalties, and subsidising big international acts. As it stands, each stream earns an artist around one-twentieth of a New Zealand cent. Tech commentator Paul Spain told Mike Hosking artists are making a fair point, as Spotify has been increasing their prices, but not artist payouts.
