What a doozy of a double week! We had some work things come up and honestly weren't feeling inspired with the lineup, so we've combined it! PLUS all the fire that came out last week. The solos overload our pullboxes and hearts at the same time. 3K's X-Men get told what's up by Scott and then respond in kind. And that final issue of NYX leaves us wanting more with no hope in sight... 02:36 News | 17:40 Data is Beautiful | 19:16 Polls | 21:55 Personal News | 25:51 General Questions | 32:16 Astonishing X-Men | 38:30 Giant Size FCBD | 42:27 Wolverine and Kitty Pryde 1 | 49:24 Rogue Savage Land 4 | 55:03 Weapon X-Men 3 | 59:45 NYX 10 | 1:10:32 Ultimate Wolverine 5 | 1:14:03 Laura Kinney Wolverine 6 | 1:19:25 Storm 8 | 1:24:54 Psylocke 7 | 1:30:40 X-Men 16 | From the Ashes! We have been invaded!!!! Hide your maple syrup and your top shelf hockey players! The boys from Why Not?! Read Alpha Flight with Chris and Tom, have invaded our studios and are imposing their Alpha Flightian ways upon us. Protect the children from their wicked ways. Chris and Tom followed us back to the Pacific Northwest after we invaded their show. We tried to scare them away with our "no foul language" or "dirty jokes" and "PG attitude", but they showed up anyway with a bucket full of censor tape and beep sound clips. This is what we get for using cheap Canadian locks on our club house door. Now you may be asking if drinking was involved in the making of this episode. If you are asking that question, you have not been paying attention to our show. Of course drinking was involved. Do you think we would get tangled up with people who talk about Alpha Flight without alcohol? Focusing back on the positive, we were able to eventually find common ground to agree on. We focused on our inner well-being and looked beyond the us versus them issues and remembered the important things in life....like there was no Sasquatch in this issue. And that is something we can all be happy about. Sometimes the best laid plans end up being a nightmare. Sometimes they end up being a disaster. Sometimes they end up being like our talk with Chris and Tom. I am not sure what I mean by that, but neither does anyone else. At the end of the night, two bearded boys flew off to their secret layer to discuss future comic books. The other two bearded dudes did something similar. I am not sure what differences were resolved, but a promise to fight another day was made. Oh...and lawyers will be involved in the future. In all seriousness, check out Why Not?! Read Alpha Flight with Chris and Tom. They are two amazing fellows who have a lot of fun talking about everyone's favorite Marvel Canadian team. And check out the art from this issue at: https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2025/02/02/astonishing-x-men-v3-59/ We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. It's another intense stack of comics, but we're generally here for it. A lot of great content, both new and continuing. Magik is the stand out of the episode with a strong first issue that sets up a little corner of demon magic for her to play in. Uncanny X-Men brought our first official crossover to a close and a lot of fans feel underwhelmed by Raid on Graymalkin. Plus Wolverine's got a team building up in his solo that we're here for, along with a co-star credit with Deadpool on an action / adventure thrill ride. So much content to love! Episode 22 of Matt and Mike (and Melissa) Read Comics dives into Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men. On the heels of Grant Morrison's bizarre, confusing, and often downright boring run on New X-Men, the camp and straightforward superhero storytelling of Joss Whedon was a true breath of fresh air. The classic yellow-and-blue themed suits are back. A new team is formed. A new villain arrives from another planet with a cryptic message about the power of a mutant destroying their homeworld. And on top of all of that, a “cure” for mutants. And…AND in a stroke of brilliant storytelling Whedon pulls off a move that has since been so reused that it almost feels stale, but when this book came out it was a truly remarkable comic moment - the return of Colossus. A character that had been dead in comics for years makes a stunning and cinematic return in Astonishing X-Men. Whedon and the late John Cassady craft one of the best X-Men storylines in the 21st century with Astonishing X-Men and you all should be reading this.
Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Comics legend Marjorie Liu joins our host Lodro Rinzler to discuss an incredibly fun and disturbing issue of X-Men! Before we sell you on all the hilarity, let's get real for a moment: Marjorie Liu is not just an extraordinary comic writer, she's also just a lovely, grounded, kind human being. It was an honor to have her on the show. Okay, now on to the silliness. In this episode we discuss how Marjorie writes from the gut and, in her words, her gut is really weird. Also, how she went through a cathartic experience writing X-23 (now Wolverine). Topics include: teenage Marjorie wrote X-Men fanfic in the Marvel Universe, a hat and trenchcoat is more than sufficient to disguise a six foot, blue, furry man Charles Xavier sends postcards from space Mesmero is a bag of dicks Also Mesmero read a Playboy once and thinks that's how people should always pose the Phoenix force has limits on how badly you can mess up Jean Grey At the end we answer questions from YOU! Yes, you! Then Marjorie Liu spits wisdom on how to be yourself even and especially when others are trying to tell you who you should become and how to transmute hatred and negativity into gold. In which “Astonishing X-Men” is something of a misnomer; Death has a good look; sometimes you just need a guy who swoops; Miles stops worrying and learns to love Nate Grey; Telekinesis is silly looking; “Wolverine” dies; and nothing really changes.
Luego, junto a PR-17, llegará ASTONISHING X-MEN a nuestra sección de cómics Entre Viñetas.

So this is the second episode paying tribute to the late great John Cassaday, the award winning comics artist, best known for his co-creation of Planetary, which we revisited last week John Cassaday passed away far too soon at the age of 52 on September 9, 2024 in New York City. Be sure to check out last week's replay of our episode of his work on Planetary - and of course, go pick up a copy - you will be blown away. This week we're revisiting one of our earliest episodes from our inaugural X-Month, where we read Cassaday's work on 2004's Astonishing X-Men - another solid read. We hope you'll make the time to revisit the work with us, to see the work of comics truly great artists. Mr. Cassaday received an Eisner Award, the comic book industry equivalent of the Oscar, for best penciler/inker in 2004. He tied for the award with Frank Quitely in 2005 and won it again in 2006, for Planetary with writer Warren Ellis and Astonishing X-Men with writer Joss Whedon, “There are basically three people that I would count as the easiest collaborations, the most natural, the best I've ever worked with,” Mr. Whedon said in an interview. “One is an actor, one is an editor and one is Johnny. He knew so much of what I was trying to convey that my scripts just got shorter and shorter.” “The best page I ever wrote in comics has no words,” Mr. Whedon said. The page, which also has no sound effects, depicts Kitty Pryde, Colossus's lover, gazing at him with a stunned expression as she places a hand over her heart. “He didn't swagger, he didn't yell,” Mr. Whedon said of Mr. Cassaday, but “he was very exacting” about his art — an approach that included giving notes on the colors and lettering of his pages. Laura J. Martin, the colorist on Astonishing X-Men, said that one of her favorite collaborations with Mr. Cassaday was the cover of No. 6 in the series, on which he depicted Kitty and Colossus caressing. The cover required extensive color work to convey texture and the silver sheen of Colossus's metallic body. Mr. Cassaday gave Ms. Martin that cover as a wedding present. Rest in peace John Cassaday.NY TIMES: John Cassaday, Award-Winning Comic Book Artist, Dies at 52https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/arts/john-cassaday-dead.html
A few weeks ago, we lost a great comics artist far too soon. John Cassaday was an award-winning American comic book artist, writer, and television director - who passed away on September 9, 2024 in New York City at the age of 52 i think it goes without saying that comics is a medium where great writing and art come together for a truly great medium of storytelling. and when both are firing on all cylinders, it truly something to behold. John Cassaday was one of those artists. So on Quarantined Comics, we've had the good fortune to revisit some of the works Cassaday was best known for: This episode we'll be talking about 1998's critically acclaimed series Planetary, which he co-created with Warren Ellis. John later went on to work on Marvel's relaunch of Star Wars with Jason Aaron, whose first issue sold more than a million copies. Acclaimed writer Mark Waid, who was one of the first to help Cassaday get his start said this — “I refuse to take any real credit for ‘discovering' John Cassaday,” Mr. Waid wrote on Facebook. “I can't take credit for having functioning eyeballs.”Next week we'll be re-sharing our episode about his work on 2004's Astonishing X-Men. Rest in peace John Cassaday, you were one of the greats. NY TIMES: John Cassaday, Award-Winning Comic Book Artist, Dies at 52 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/arts/john-cassaday-dead.html

EPISODE 291 - We take a break from our regular seasons to pay tribute to two great comics artists who passed away recently: John Casasdy and Karl Moline. Cassady is probably best known for his stunning work on Planetary (with writer Warren Ellis) and Astonishing X-Men. But also -- everything he drew was magic. Moline was a bit less known, but made a huge impact with his stellar work on The Fray, Route 666 and much else. Both of them are gone too soon. On cheerier subjects, we catch up on our mailbag in which we learn about some mistakes we (Will) made and that some people agreed with Kevin's opinions on Ultimate Spider-Man!
On this special episode, we honor the extraordinary legacy of actor James Earl Jones, a voice that defined generations. From his groundbreaking roles in Dr. Strangelove and The Great White Hope, to his unforgettable performances in The Lion King and Coming to America, Jones left an indelible mark on cinema. But without question, his most iconic role was as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, where his commanding voice became the stuff of legend. We also take a few moments to honor popular comic book artist and writer John Cassaday (Planetary, Astonishing X-Men, Captain America #1). Cassaday was a favorite of ours, and he and Jones both died on Monday, September 9, 2024. Rest in peace, gentlemen.
In the upcoming issue of The Comic Section Podcast, we begin by paying our heartfelt condolences to four legends: James Earl Jones, the iconic EGOT-winning actor known for Star Wars, Field of Dreams, and The Lion King; Peter Renaday, the beloved voice of Splinter in the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series; John Cassaday, the brilliant artist behind Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men and co-creator of Planetary; and R&B icon Frankie Beverly of Frankie Beverly and Maze. We dive into breaking news, including Amazon offering Jared Leto the role of Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, and Josh Brolin's decision to pass on the role of Hal Jordan in HBO's Green Lantern series. Also, Judd Apatow is set to direct, with Steven Spielberg producing, Cola Wars for Sony, chronicling Pepsi's battle to dethrone Coca-Cola. We also touch on director Gary Dauberman's remarks about Stephen King's crucial role in ensuring the release of Salem's Lot, which finally arrives on Max after multiple delays. In our "Coming Soon/Preview" segment, we take a look at trailers for Wolf Man, The Radleys, and Venom 3. Lastly, Ant reviews the cult classic Hell Comes to Frogtown, and Shawn delivers a "Hot Take" he's been eager to share. Tune in for a jam-packed episode of news, previews, and heartfelt tributes!

Happy Pride Month, Bub! After many X-Men episodes we are finally focusing on the most famous X-Man of all: Wolverine! We romp through many multiverses and meet Howlett, a gay version of Wolverine who is in a relationship with Hercules. We start by covering Wolverine's legendary first appearance in The Incredible Hulk before tackling Howlett's debut across multiple Greg Pak scripted books that see him team up with Cyclops, Dazzler, a teenage Nightcrawler battling many evil Xaviers. Plus we talk if we will see a gay Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie and why we have never seen Howlett again. Ep. 135 What if Wolverine was gay?from Astonishing X-Men #44+ and X-Treme X-Men #1+ (2011 Marvel Comics)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersThe claws are out as we finally cover the legendary Wolverine and specifically, his gay multiversal counterpart. We give a history of Wolverine on the page and behind the scenes and talk his first appearance opposite The Hulk. Then we jump into a nearly 20 issue run from the mind of Greg Pak and others that sees Howlett, the gay Wolverine, reunite with his partner Hercules, partner with the 616 Cyclops and Dazzler and battle countless evil Xaviers across the old west, steampunk gods, dinosaurs and more. Plus we talk why we want Wolverine to be more of a Spike then an Angel, why Howlett has never returned and what we might expect from Hugh Jackman's last (?) appearance.
