Join mega nerds Dre Alvarez and Jeff May as they geek out on a different nerdy cultural touchstone every month. Part reminiscence, part historical deep dive. This month, Dre and Jeff are joined by the incredible Mike Slater (who is not only a great musician, but he actually recorded a theme song for THIS SPECIFIC EPISODE) as they finish their season on "Comic Origins" with Rob Liefeld's Youngblood. There's a lot to unpack about this significant comic series that may have kickstarted a market crash, so let's NOT string up our bow, copy a bunch of our own art and character designs, and put style WAY over substance, as we take a look at four issues that would change the landscape of comics forever and is also financially worthless. And, of course, don't forget to follow Mike (@slatron11) Dre (@nerdnumbers) and Jeff (@heytherejeffro2 or @heytherejeffro) on the socials, and have a nerdy day!AND CHECK OUT MIKESLATER.COM for more, including detailed show notes by our incredible guest, as well as Patreon.com/jeffmay for early access to shows like this and Jeff Has Cool Friends, and so much more!

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're going to continue on with some more 80s deep diving with pat mAcdonald from the band Timbuk 3.  The band is most well known for their 1986 hit “The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades,” but they were far more prolific than just that one song.  They released six albums in the decade between 1986 and 1995 and Tom went on to record numerous other albums and collaborated with artists as varied as Cher, Jackson Browne, and Stewart Copeland of the Police.  Music credits: "Youngblood," Blue Dot Sessions "Steel Bridge Song" pat mAcdonald "The Future's So Bright (David Lynch version)" pat mAcdonald pat mAcdonald's web site Steel Bridge Radio Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books!

Can God Speak Through AI? - A Conversation with Carl Youngblood

Faith Matters

This week, we're thrilled to talk with Carl Youngblood— longtime technologist, software engineer, and president of the Mormon Transhumanist Association.Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant, futuristic idea—it's already shaping the way we learn, work, and even practice our faith. And just this past week, AI made big headlines again in the tech world with the release of vastly improved models and increasing belief among technology leaders that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is just around the corner. Whether or not that's the case, the exponential progress of AI is undeniable, and it's sparking some of the biggest questions of our time. If God can speak through the written word, could God speak through AI? How do we discern when it's a tool for growth versus a shortcut that stunts it? And if AI frees us from certain types of work, could it deepen our relationships and spirituality—or will it leave us searching for new sources of meaning? It's worth noting that many of the people most deeply concerned about AI's effects on humanity and society are those who were involved in creating it. In this episode, we'll talk about some of those concerns, but we'll mostly explore ways we can use it constructively. Carl brings a sharp and thought-provoking perspective to these questions. He challenges us to approach AI with both curiosity and caution—seeing how it can deepen connection or drive isolation, spark creativity or dull our own discernment. Rather than dismissing it as just a tool or blindly embracing it, Carl pushes us to wrestle with its real impact on our thinking, relationships, and spiritual growth. This is a conversation full of nuance, curiosity, and a lot of open-ended questions, and we hope it sparks new reflections for you. We'll have links in the show notes to tools we mention throughout the episode, so be sure to check those out. Neil is the composer/co-lyricist, along with Pulitzer Prize/TONY-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, of the award-winning new musical The 12, which just finished a very successful pre-Broadway tryout to critical and audience acclaim at the Goodspeed Opera House, directed by TONY award-winning director John Doyle, produced for Broadway by Cody Lassen & Joe Grano. The 12 previously ran at The Denver Center to unanimous rave reviews and won the 2015 HENRY Award for best new play or musical. Original Cast recording will be available in the winter of '24. Broadway opening anticipated in 2025/2026 season. Neil is currently in development as the composer of the new Broadway-bound musical version of My Cousin Vinny, based on the iconic movie, with book/lyrics by original screenwriter, Dale Launer. Neil has a new commissioned musical, How My Grandparents Fell in Love, opening in July of '25 at The NJ Rep Theater, collaborating again with book writer/co-lyricist Cary Gitter, directed by Artistic Director SuzAnne Baribas. Neil is the composer for the popular musical version of Grumpy Old Men: The Musical, based on the Warner Brothers movie classic starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, which had its official U.S. Premiere at The Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine to rave reviews, and La Mirada Theater in LA, starring Cathy Rigby. Other actors include F. Murray Abraham, TONY Award winner George Hearn, Marilu Henner, and Carole Kane. It is currently produced/licensed at many regional & community theaters across the United States. Licensing rights are with TRW (Theatrical Rights Worldwide). The original cast CD is released internationally on Jay Records, sheet music published by Hal Leonard, and licensing by Samuel French Inc. Songs from this show are also featured with many other classic songs in the official Off-Broadway Songbook, published by Hal Leonard. CARY GITTER is the playwright-in-residence at Penguin Rep Theatre in Stony Point, New York. His plays include THE STEEL MAN (Penguin Rep); GENE & GILDA (George Street Playhouse, Penguin Rep); THE VIRTUOUS LIFE OF JOSEPH ANDREWS (Penguin Rep), adapted from the Henry Fielding novel; and THE SABBATH GIRL (off-Broadway, 59E59 Theaters; Penguin Rep; Invisible Theatre; Theatre Ariel; published by Stage Rights). His musicals include THE SABBATH GIRL (59E59, Penguin Rep) and HOW MY GRANDPARENTS FELL IN LOVE (New Jersey Repertory Company), both written with composer/co-lyricist Neil Berg. His play HOW MY GRANDPARENTS FELL IN LOVE was a New York Times Critic's Pick as part of the Ensemble Studio Theatre's (EST's) 36th Marathon of One-Act Plays. It was later recorded for the acclaimed podcast Playing on Air, as was his one-act THE ARMY DANCE. He has received commissions from the EST/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project, Penguin Rep, and West of 10th. He is an alumnus of EST's Obie Award-winning Youngblood playwrights' group. On this episode of the podcast, I talk to Sam Kahn and Julianne Werlin about how institutions and experts produce culture and authority; how two institutions in particular, the academy and journalism, are rapidly eroding in authority, resources, and maybe influence; and how Sam, Julianne, and I are reckoning, personally and professionally, with these big shifts.Among the issues we address: Why is Sam so bullish on Substack, and why is he is planning to launch a new publication on it soon? What is it like for Julianne to teach in an English department that has lost so many majors that it can't even fill a lecture hall anymore for any of their classes, including even the big Shakespeare surveys? Can Substack do as good a job as establishment publications in producing high quality book criticism? Can it have a role to play in the academic infrastructure? What's it like to spend ten years on a scholarly book and then have to wait another three to get a review of it?Sam is an editor at Persuasion magazine and the author of the Substack Castalia . Julianne is an associate professor of English at Duke University and author of Writing at the Origin of Capitalism: Literary Circulation and Social Change in Early Modern England (Oxford University Press). Her substack is Life and Letters. The genesis of this conversation is a piece that Julianne wrote for the Chronicle of Higher Education, “The Dysfunction of Criticism at the Present Time,” and then a few related pieces, including:* Sam's piece for Compact, “We Are in a Writing Renaissance”* becca rothfeld's Substack post, “why i am skeptical that substack can or should replace legacy media”* Sam's somewhat angry response to Becca's piece, “Against Becca Rothfeld”* Becca's very civil response to Sam's response to Becca, “a brief addendum: in response to my critic(s)”As of this episode of the podcast, I have a new/old collaborator, audio whiz Robert Scaramuccia. Robert produced the pilot episode of the pod, on Ezra Klein. He's now back for the indefinite future, so if the quality of the show suddenly seems higher, that's why. Great news for the nearly-extinct monarch butterflies, which will pass through the area as they migrate back to Mexico. Also, to find out how blood affects aging, scientists can surgically connect two animals and let blood circulate between them. After California's Park Fire, A Second Bloom of MilkweedDon Hankins examines a bright yellow-green patch in the meadow. The land all around is charred by fire. But here, there's a sort of miracle at work. Native milkweed has sprung up and bloomed for the second time this year. This is not something these plants, Asclepias eriocarpa, also known as Indian milkweed, are known to do.They bloomed in late spring and early summer and had already done so this year when the Park Fire roared through. But the fire seemed to happen at just the right time to coax a second flowering, one that is likely to line up with the return migration of the monarch butterflies south to overwinter in Mexico. Monarchs rely on these flowers to complete their life cycle. For researcher Don Hankins, this is a surprise delight.“We may be coming back into some knowledge here that hasn't been practiced in a long time,” said Don Hankins, a professor at Chico State, who teaches classes in geography with a focus on fire. He is also a California Plains Miwok traditional cultural practitioner.Read the rest at sciencefriday.com.Inside The ‘Creepy' Procedure That Taps Into Young BloodWhile fictional vampires suck the blood of the young to live forever, some researchers have found that certain elements in young blood actually can improve the health of the old. This is possible through a spooky procedure called parabiosis, in which the circulatory systems of two animals are joined, letting the blood flow from one into the other.By connecting old mice and young mice through parabiosis, researchers have observed how different molecules in the blood impact symptoms of aging. While some outcomes have excited experts, enthusiastic biohackers attempting to defy their own aging might have jumped the gun. There's a long way to go before we understand how elements of young blood might be harnessed to treat aging humans.Emma Gometz, SciFri's digital producer of engagement, talks to Dr. Tony Wyss-Coray, a neurology professor at Stanford University who has used parabiosis (which he once described as “creepy”) to help reveal how components of our blood affect our cognition as we age. They discuss parabiosis, vampires, and how far the field has to go before humans can benefit.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
