What a year 2023 has been. The media industry has seen the expansion of generative AI, rising interest rates impacting businesses and in some cases media investment, a tough and transitioning market for TV, the 50th anniversary of commercial radio coinciding with a burgeoning podcast market, years of "efficiency" at major tech companies, a succession plan for Rupert Murdoch, and of course, Elon Musk dominating headlines for his tumultuous ownership of Twitter. In a special year-end episode of the podcast, host Jack Benjamin is joined by editor-in-chief Omar Oakes, reporter Ella Sagar, and guest Cass Naylor to debate the question: what was the biggest story in media this year?Highlights:1:55: Omar's biggest story: AI goes mainstream10:45: Ella's biggest story: Commercial radio's Brucey bump12:37: Out-of-home and cinema's post-pandemic comeback22:51: Jack's biggest story: 'Contentification' — how social video is changing other mediums30:07: TV's big streaming transition32:25: Cass's biggest story: 'Enshittification' of the internet---Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. Omar Oakes and Ella Sagar prove their dedication to B2B podcasting by missing the England v Nigeria World Cup penalty shootout to record this episode with their analysis on the industry's biggest stories.OFCOM'S MEDIA NATIONS REPORT - is broadcast media suffering from 'fragmentation' or does it really have a deeper cultural problem with more consumers preferring short-form content? Spoiler for Omar's opinion, which features in his column today.RAJAR - did the BBC score an own goal by letting Ken Bruce walk away with Popmaster? The Rajar radio audience figures once again provided a plethora of interesting audio stories... but do we need to play closer attention to talk radio and the rise of GB News/TalkTV?PLUS Omar and Ella reflect on Sky Media trialling ITV's self-serve ad platform, why so few people in the US are taking up ads on Netflix and Disney+, and why Omnicom is giving media owners and advertisers marks out of 100 for how sustainable they are.---Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. Sam Homewood, Helen Evans and David May visit a golf club this week for a chat with United legend Steve Bruce. Steve has had a wonderful career in football, as a player and manager, and offers a fascinating reflection on it all during the latest UTD Podcast. The former Manchester United captain begins with his upbringing in the north-east and his early days at the famed Wallsend Boys Club. Starting his professional career with Gillingham, the defender reveals a funny story about reversing the charges to call his future wife, while down in Kent, and how the police turned up at the phone-box, prompting fears his time in the game could come to an end before it had really got going. Thankfully, it was soon smoothed over and he impressed sufficiently with the Gills to earn a move to Norwich City, even if he recalls a horror debut against Liverpool. Once United registered an interest in his services, there was only going to be one place for him to continue his progress. Not only did he star for the Reds as the team won our first title for 26 years but he became club captain, all on the back of an impromptu house visit by Sir Alex Ferguson! Brucey offers insight into his incredible partnership with Gary Pallister, and scolds his fellow centre-back for leaking a secret about him from their time rooming together. He also explains why Eric Cantona was a “bit bonkers” and details the Frenchman's favourite tipple at the pub.Of course, younger fans will view Steve as a manager, first and foremost, as he has a wealth of experience in this field, taking charge of 12 different clubs. He answers a question about how he chose the jobs, as he has bossed some big city rivals, and opens up about the difficulties and pressures faced in the hot seat.A man with many great stories to tell, Steve Bruce is certain to keep you entertained throughout the episode. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Here you can get early access to new episodes, published 24 hours before everywhere else.If you'd like to write to the only official Manchester United Podcast then e-mail utdpodcast@manutd.co.uk For your daily fix of Manchester United news look no further than our new United Daily podcastWe'd also love it if you could leave us a rating and review wherever you listen to your podcasts. “Jimmy Dragged Gabby Through The Mud” PIT@NJD 01/22/23Your Pens are on the road to take on the Devils at THE ROCK. Honestly, as a New Jersey native, I must say that the Prudential Center is a KILLER venue for NHL hockey. It's also a TOUGH place to watch your team get beat. That said, the last Penguins road game I witnessed, as a resident of the Garden State was a W over the Devils. Let's hope that Tristan Jarry, newly reinserted into PIT's lineup and fresh off a clean, impressive, 44-save victory at home against Ottawa on Friday, can resume his All Star-caliber play. Moreover, the Penguins will need to ‘have-their-backstop's-back,' doing everything they can to contain the speedy Jersey squad. I start the episode with some tape from former Vancouver Canucks head coach, Bruce Boudreau. IMO, “Gabby” was fairly disrespected by GM Jim Rutherford, with the story of his impending firing leaking as early as November. What an awkward position to be in, no? And then to be unceremoniously dismissed as soon as the front office could get its chess pieces in place. Suppose that's just the way the The Show works. Best wishes to Brucey and his family, he's by all accounts a good person and a passionate hockey guy.Thank you for listening!! Follow us on Twitter @penspod, on Instagram at @flypenguinsfly, and subscribe to the Fly Penguins Fly YouTube Channel: https://bit.ly/3fw0IWt for video editions of select conversations you'll hear on this podcast Enjoy tonight's Penguins road game versus the Devils … AND of COURSE:LETS GO PENS!!JEFF TAYLOR

After a bit of a hiatus due to Xmas Holidays, Covid infections and our Instagram being hacked by some Bitcoin donkey, we are finally back in the shed with the Head Coach of the Fiji Drua, Mick Byrne. What Mick has achieved both as a player and a coach across three footballing codes is flat out ridiculous. (Below is a small snapshot of his career). Tune in this week to hear one of the most insightful chats we've had on the podcast, and get a behind the scenes look at what separates the best coaches, players and teams from a man who knows.Player- AFL Premiership Winner with Hawthorne 1983- 5th in the Brownlow in 1984- 167 Games for the Demons, Hawks and SwansCoach- Sydney Swans coaching and development - Kicking Coach with the Manly Sea Eagles through the mid to late 90's.- Kicking & Skills Coach with the Wallabies from 1998 - 2000 & 2016-2020.- NZ All Blacks Skills Coach 2005 - 2015 winning every trophy you can pretty much win.- 2001 Named Head Coach of the Fiji Drua Coached by and alongsidevRon Barassi, Alan Jeans, Tom Hafey, Sir Graham Henry, Sir Steve Hanson, Wayne Smith, Michael Chieka and Sir John Kirwan.v As always we would like to thank the people who support us:Lennox Pizza and Pasta - The best pizza this side of Naples and a huge supporter of the podcast - call in and see Mez and the team when next in Lennox Head or get online and check them out at https://lennoxheadpizzaandpasta.com.au/Yulli's Brews - Big thank you to Simon and the team for the continued support in the hydration department - seeing as the fridge is near on empty week after week, the beer has been a huge hit. What do Owen Wright, Adam Melling, Nick Meaney, Connor O'Leary, Stuart Kennedy and Berrick Barnes all have in common? They've all spent vast periods of their careers training under the tutelage of Exercise Physiologist and Goju Ryo Karate (5th Dan Sensei) expert Pete Roberts in his garage in Lennox Head. For a tiny garage, in a small Northern NSW town, that is a phenomenal record. What's even more impressive, is that professional athlete or not, kids who invest time in his gym come out the other side not just better athletes but better people and that in itself speaks volumes to Pete's character and the culture he creates. This podcast is all about highlighting people who are doing great things in the community and Pete exemplifies this and more. So tune this week to gain a bit of old school wisdom from one the best movement coaches around. When you first meet David Moreira a few things stand out - for starters he is calm and measured in everything he does, secondly his size (think Jockey on the first at Randwick) tricks you into thinking you may have a chance against him on the mat (trust me you don't) and lastly he is possibly the most humble bloke you're likely to come across. For a guy who only moved to Australia a few years back (with little to no grasp of the English Language), it is quite remarkable what he has managed to achieve both on and off the mat in such a short space of time. We're truly lucky to have this bloke in our local community and if you or your kids are up for joining one of the best training environments within the Northern Rivers region, head to https://www.portalbrazilianjiujitsu.com/ to find out more. What a privilege this week to have WSL commentator (and wearer of about 50 other hats) Ronnie Blakey in the shed. After near on 25 years in the Surf Industry, Ronnie has pretty much seen it all - rising from the basement floor to become editor of Tracks and Waves magazines, being at the forefront of the digital technology boom and commentating on some of the most significant moments in Surfing history. Further to that, he possesses that innate 'Blakey' energy and a born story telling ability that seems to 'light up' any room he enters (this week in the shed was no different). So strap yourselves in for some laugh out loud tales and hard won wisdom from a man many consider to be one of the wisest counsels in surfing today. As always we would like to thank the people who support us:Yulli's Brews - Big thank you to Simon and the team for the continued support in the hydration department - seeing as the fridge is near on empty week after week, the beer has been a huge hit. If Woody could interview anyone, it would be this weeks guest - Dave 'Rasta' Rastovich and 'WOW' he did not disappoint. As our No. 1 ticketholder 'Saucebottle' said at the end of the night, 'Holy smokes, that was 2 hours of articulated intelligent sentences' - a comment rarely associated with content on the Ball and All Podcast. Whilst there have been Freesurfer's before him, Rasta is synonymous with putting the term on the map, due to his incredible waterman abilities and his propensity to follow his own path - fasting, mediation, yoga, environmentalism, shunning technology, learning from elders, growing his own food and all before it was cool to do so. Not only that but the fact that he can surf anything from your own 'front door' to 'Code Red Teahupo'o' makes him one of the most in demand surfers still to this day. You've found The Crowley Show and we start with the fact that Big Ben has shut his big fat mouth. That was harsh. But for real Crowley tells you why it's a great move for the Steelers QB to keep quiet this offseason. We also get into how big of a game it is for the Penguins on their March, as Crowley naturally sounds like he has his doubts... Brian Metzer joins the show to break down the game tonight with Crowley, and we get into some NCAA tournament talk! We also take a listen to Bruce Gradkowski take out Josh Harris's theory.
