On September 14 Comic Book Resources reported that “Bill Willingham, the creator of the long-running Vertigo series, Fables, which was recently revived as part of DC's Black Label line of comics, has announced that he is putting the characters into the public domain as a result of years of disputes with DC over his contractual rights to the characters of the series, which is about a group of mythological beings who were exiled from their homelands to go live among humans. … Willingham announced that, as of tomorrow, "15 September 2023, the comic book property called Fables, including all related Fables spin-offs and characters, is now in the public domain. What was once wholly owned by Bill Willingham is now owned by everyone, for all time. It's done, and as most experts will tell you, once done it cannot be undone. Take-backs are neither contemplated nor possible." This episode follows on from last month's discussion of enshittification. Sophie Hope and Owen Kelly discuss whether Willingham can in fact put his creation into the public domain, how this relates to Creative Commons licences, and what all this might mean in terms of licensing work that has been co-created by a team or a community.

Today's episode is brought to you by the letters W-T-F? Writers James Asmus and Jim Festante join us for a very special Creator Corner to discuss their new apocalyptic puppet caper comic Survival Street, which hits shops on August 3rd. Get that banana out of your ear, because we've got something else to shove in it. Now is a weird time to be alive. Frequently, hope seems out of reach. More and more, our neighbors appear to be strangers. If only the public access puppets of our youth could help us out now as they did back then. In Survival Street, they can, and they do! We talk with James Asmus and Jim Festante about their deliciously demented comic book and how they managed to adhere to the morality of yesterday's famous felt edutainers while also savagely lampooning them. Survival Street has a mean bite, but it maintains a massive heart too. The combination creates a surprisingly heartfelt satire demanding attention. From Dark Horse Comics, Survival Street #0 is currently available to read for free via Comic Book Resources. Jim Festante doesn't mess with social media, but you can find his website HERE. Recently, Comic Book Resources, a popular outlet for comics industry news, released its ranking of the 20 Best Superpowers of All Time. The list included the usual suspects: Super-strength. X-ray vision. Flight. One that didn't crack the list was dyslexia. Of course, dyslexia is far more common than heat vision considering between 5 to 10% of Americans live with signs such as slow reading, difficulty spelling, or mixing up words. The severity differs for everyone, and dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. Children diagnosed with dyslexia can get into college and live abundant lives, especially when they learn to harness the creativity and novel thinking that entrepreneurial superheroes with dyslexia like “Shark Tank's” Daymond John consider their superpower. On this episode, you'll hear about dyslexia from individuals and families from around the country who've learned to thrive with it during our “In the Know” segment. Next, our national panel of experts will provide advice on how families can empower children who have dyslexia during our “Ask the Experts” conversation. Hi, kaiju lovers. This is MIFV's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA. You might be wondering why I'm writing the shownotes for this episode. I had to prep it for the podcast feed instead of Nate, because…well, Nate's not terrestrial anymore. He had a great discussion with MIFV MAX member Damon Noyes, who sponsored this episode on the 1966 Toei tokusatsu fantasy film, The Magic Serpent. Hell, even I liked the film because, as they pointed out, it's basically Star Wars. It's based on a Japanese folk tale and features characters—like Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru—that Naruto fans would be familiar with. Not to mention kaiju fans would love the weirdo giant toad and the dragon the hero and villain transform into during the climax. The broadcast was riddled with MST3K-style riffs that compared the film to Lord of the Rings, a classic Budweiser commercial, and a game show (because Jiraiya fights killer doors). Before the broadcast, Miss Perkins—better known as Galaxy Pink Ranger Karone Khaymanlee—visited the KIJU studio to tell Nate she'd broken the Board's influence on her. Then at end, Nate had to read some Board propaganda pertaining to the late Gary…and he just couldn't do it…. Here's the IMDB page for Maxie, the film Damon is in. Listen to Nathan Marchand and Travis Alexander's spinoff podcast, The Henshin Men, on Redcircle. This episode's prologue and epilogue, “Contract Violations,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Damon Noyes.  Guest stars: Celeste Mora as Miss Perkins/Karone Additional music: “Let's Rocket!” (Remix) by Johnnybeeog Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, and Elijah Thomas! Some of us knew of her wit and great writing even before she started writing comics, reading her column "You All Be Sorry!" on Comic Book Resources, but we couldn't even imagine how good she really was until she started working for Bongo Comics, and then writing Deadpool for Marvel. But she EXPLODED into our collective imaginations when she moved to DC to create the definitive run on BIRDS OF PREY. Her time on Batgirl is also beloved by the fans. She's also created creator-owned books like Welcome to Tranquility and she's come back to Marvel with books like Domino and its sequel Domino: Hotshots. I am talking, of course, about the amaaaaaaazing GAIL SIMONE! Tuck. Guggenheim announced the novel, titled Arrow: Fatal Legacies, on Twitter on Saturday afternoon after an Amazon listing was spotted. The book will be published by Titan books and will hit shelves on January 30, 2018. The story will help to bridge the gap between the show's fifth and sixth seasons. The synopsis for the novel teases a deeper exploration of Chase's plans on Lian Yu. The untold story bridging between ARROW seasons 5 and 6, exclusive to this novel! In the devastating aftermath of season five, Team Arrow must resume their mission to protect Star City. Those who have survived Chase's trap on Lian Yu discover that his plans did not end there. If his legacies aren't stopped, countless more will die. http://www.cbr.com/arrow-guggenheim-novel/ Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Arrow, Grey's, Once, Lethal Weapon, Supergirl, The Night Shift, NCIS and More (Date: 09 Aug 2017) Have anything new to share about Arrow‘s Slade sticking around? — It appears Oliver will make good on his offer to his frenemy, in trade for his help against Adrian Chase, seeing as the CW series is currently seeking an Aussie lad to fill the guest-starring role of an “introverted, moody and naturally athletic” teenager. https://tvline.com/2017/08/09/arrow-season-6-spoilers-felicity-slade-son/   ARROW Season 6 May See Jessica De Gouw's Huntress Return; Will She Be Friend Or Foe? (Date: 10 Aug 2017) Speaking to Comic Book Resources, executive producer Marc Guggenheim has this response when asked about De Gouw's potential return. “I want to say, ‘Absolutely [to Huntress returning].' Jessica De Gouw has expressed an absolute willingness to come back. Jessica's a favorite actor of mine, and the Huntress is a favorite character of mine. I want to make it happen in Season 6. We've got some plans for the later half of the year that I think she will fit into really well, so we'll see.” https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/arrow/arrow-season-6-may-see-jessica-de-gouws-huntress-return-will-she-be-friend-or-foe-a153187 John Barrowman Addresses Possible Arrowverse Return (Date: 12 Aug 2017) But according to a recent post from Barrowman's Instagram - inspired by our reporting - it appears that he is very willing to return. Barrowman took to Instagram today to address recent comments made by Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim. As the fan-favorite actor explained, he had been under the impression that there wasn't an opportunity for him to return - until he read our report on Guggenheim's comments. "I am surprised and very happy to hear Marc Guggenheim's comments about Merlyn's future in the Arrowverse," Barrowman explained, "because in a very decisive phone conversation we had with Wendy Mericle, I was led to believe that there were no plans to bring Merlyn back." http://comicbook.com/2017/08/12/arrow-john-barrowman-malcolm-merlyn-dead-return/ Arrow EP Discusses the Possibility of John Barrowman's Return (11 Aug 2017) “That's up to John,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told reporters during a recent roundtable. “We told John when we called him to tell him about the events of the finale, every single person on all the shows has come back in some shape or form. We've got flashbacks, we've got time travel, we've got parallel universes. Goodbye is never goodbye. He has an open invitation to return to the show any time he wants.” http://comicbook.com/dc/2017/08/11/arrow-merlyn-john-barrowman-return/ Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Arrow, Grey's, Once, Lethal Weapon, Supergirl, The Night Shift, NCIS and More (Date: 09 Aug 2017) There has been a lot of hinting and build-up to Arrow‘s Felicity starting up her own company, Smoak Tech. Are there plans for this in Season 6? — Co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim explained, “That was something we wanted to do last year, and then we got sort of seduced by the Helix storyline. I would say that people wanting that storyline will be happy, but for reasons that I think will be very obvious, it can't be called Smoak Technologies. And all those clever readers who are like, ‘That's because she'll be changing her last name to Queen,' it's not Queen Technologies, either.” https://tvline.com/2017/08/09/arrow-season-6-spoilers-felicity-slade-son/ Arrow Season 6 Villain Will Be the Biggest Bad Yet, EPs Promise (Date: 07 Aug 2017) At Comic-Con International, Arrow executive producers Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim weighed in which characters are returning, how Oliver's son William will affect the show, and how they plan to bring the first four-episode crossover to the CW this fall. The season's theme is family. Examine being a father and a superhero. They “are just focusing on the elements that worked last year. The gritty crime stories, the grounded tone.” http://www.cbr.com/arrow-season-6-villain/   GENERAL DC TV NEWS   Spoiler Room: Scoop on Blindspot, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Grey's Anatomy, and more (Date 10 Aug 2017) Will Kuasa crossing paths with Ray on Vixen be addressed on Legends of Tomorrow? — Ray's  knowledge of Kuasa just may help the Legends version of Vixen. EP Marc Guggenheim says, “If you go back and look at Vixen season 2, I wouldn't exactly call her fighting alongside Ray, she's always been morally questionable, but I think that's what makes it interesting as far as Amaya is concerned is that Ray, at the appropriate moment, will accurately tell her that there were moments where Kuasa was capable of selfless good, so I think that gives Amaya a little bit of hope.” http://ew.com/tv/2017/08/10/spoiler-room-blindspot-brooklyn-nine-nine-greys-anatomy/ ‘The Flash' Casts Sugar Lyn Beard as Hazard (EXCLUSIVE) (Date: 09 Aug 2017) Sugar Lyn Beard has been cast as Rebecca Sharpe, aka Hazard, for the fourth season of “The Flash.” The “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” star will appear in the third episode of The CW series' upcoming season. Sharpe is described as perpetually down-on her luck and is convinced her life is cursed — until a freak accident changes everything.
