Andy and Mike are back and this time they are looking at stories from two different decades but written by the same writer. Doug Moench had two distinct runs on Batman. In the eighties he followed Gerry Conway on Dark Knight writing duties and continued the "Triangle Era before the Triangle Era and without triangles" storytelling style by working on both Batman and Detective Comics. He left the book after Batman #400, but came back to the Batman title in the early nineties just before Knightfall. He would stay on that title until No Mans Land and is one of the rare Bat writers to leave the character and then return. First up on the docket is Batman #367 and Detective Comics #534, which has a pre-Crisis and even pre-Robin Jason Todd dressed in a fancy costume helping the Batman as he battles Poison Ivy. It's a standard Ivy plot for the time, but this doesn't stop these issues from being entertaining. The guys talk about how skimpy Poison Ivy's outfit is, the very seventies television/Hammer Horror feel to the story, the subplots, and the differences between Don Newton and Gene Colan's art. Then they jump forward to 1995 and talk about Batman #525, which was an Underworld Unleased crossover issue. Not that you would be able to tell that as it has nearly nothing to do with the larger event going on. The story focuses on Mister Freeze and his Underworld Unleashed upgrade, but the bulk of the commentary is about Kelly Jones's art. Mike was not the biggest fan of Kelly's style back in 1995, but that has changed in a big way over the past three decades. It may not seem like it, but Andy and Mike do like feedback even if they are crap at getting to it. The most direct way to do this is to email them, which you can do by directing your thoughts to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com. You can also leave a comment over on their Facebook page. You can also leave a comment at the new web home of the show, The Bailey Planet. Next Time: Andy and Mike jump back to the early nineties and talk about Venom. Not the Spider-Man villain, but a storyline fromBatman: Legends of the Dark Knight that would later become important to the Knightfall storyline.

As part of the Comic Boom! and Comic Source collaboration, this DC Spotlight for the week of January 28, 2026 finds Jace and Rocky breaking down a packed slate of fourteen DC releases, with discussion opening on the passing and legacy of Sal Buscema before turning to the week's books. DC KO: The Kids Are All Fight Special #1 is examined for its focus on younger heroes and its place as a largely skippable but well-drawn tie-in, while Detective Comics #1105 continues Tom Taylor's "The Courage That Kills" arc with deeper insight into the Lion's origin and Gotham's escalating crisis. Harley Quinn #58 is discussed as the start of a new arc that feels tonally familiar, followed by the Supergirl Next Door Valentine's anthology, which offers mixed results across stories spotlighting Supergirl, Jay Garrick, Poison Ivy, Guy Gardner, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Martian Manhunter, and Green Arrow. Green Lantern #31 features a nostalgic Hal Jordan and Barry Allen team-up that advances Jeremy Adams' larger arc in subtle ways, while Superman #34 pushes Superboy Prime further into moral conflict against the Dark Legion. Absolute Martian Manhunter #8 stands out for its conceptual storytelling and increased narrative momentum, The Flash #29 introduces Dream Girl as a potential crack in Darkseid's Legion, and Harley and Ivy: Love and Crimes #3 explores the early dynamics between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy with a more grounded emotional approach. Justice League Unlimited #15 and Justice League Red #6 wrap major threads involving Neuron, time-displaced heroes, and Red Tornado's reckoning, while Absolute Batman #16 delivers a character-driven underworld journey with Wonder Woman that highlights Bruce Wayne's loyalty and sacrifice. Absolute Flash #11 provides major revelations about the Still Point and the source of Wally West's power, and Absolute Wonder Woman #16 launches the "Season of the Witch" arc with Absolute Zatanna and a reimagined Suicide Squad, setting the stage for one of the week's most consequential confrontations.

In this DC Spotlight episode, Jace and Rocky dive into another packed week of DC Comics, following Jace's return from New York Comic Con 2025 with fresh energy and insights. The conversation opens with how the current wave of DC K.O. tie-ins is enriching the main event without feeling obligatory, setting the tone for a week that balances emotional depth with big superhero spectacle. The guys unpack how Green Arrow #29 anchors the chaos in grounded, heartfelt storytelling, while Harley Quinn #55 leans into its sharp humor and fast pacing for longtime fans. They explore Absolute Wonder Woman #13 as a bold, introspective chapter that pushes themes of compassion and identity and speculate on just what the titular PRICE refers to. THe guys praise Green Lantern #28 for juggling multiple character arcs with ease though Jace felt the set-up issue was much more compelling than Rocky did. The finale of Green Lantern: Dark #7 earns extra discussion as they debate whether its emotional clarity redeems a series that's divided readers, while Detective Comics #1102 gets unanimous acclaim for putting the “detective” back in Detective Comics through gritty espionage-style art and high-stakes tension. From there they look at Justice League Unlimited #12, a standout DC K.O. tie-in that surprises with strong character beats for Power Girl, Aquaman, and Guy Gardner, and The Flash #26, where Mark Waid and Christopher Cantwell steer the tone back toward classic heroics even as Darkseid's reach expands across time itself. Immortal Legend: Batman #3 offers an experimental, puzzle-driven story that sparks mixed reactions but earns respect for ambition, while the Superman corner of the line dominates the week—especially Superman #31, a Lois and Lara-focused triumph that ties mythic revelation to personal courage, punctuated by Joshua Williamson's perfect handle on Superboy Prime. The guys bothed loved Superman #31, calling it the ideal blend of heart, history, and high concept. They close by highlighting the new DC Finest: Crisis on Infinite Earths collection, a Swamp Thing retrospective, Teen Titans: Starfire's YA trade, and Preacher Absolute Vol. 3, plus tease a slate of NYCC interviews featuring Bear Walker, Dean Haspiel, Cullen Bunn, Thomas Jane, and more—an energetic, discussion of everything DC is doing right.

[rating: 2.5/5] DISCUSSION BATMAN AND ETRIGAN Etrigan first appeared in The Demon #1 (September 1972) and was created by Jack Kirby. He created him at the behest of DC, who saw it as likely to be more commercially successful than the Fourth World and cancelled New Gods and Forever People to facilitate work on the new title. According to Evanier, Kirby had no interest in horror comics, but created Mark Etrigan in response to DC's demand for a horror character. Kirby was annoyed that Etrigan's popularity forced him to abandon the Fourth World titles before he was done with them. Etrigan returned for a four-issue miniseries in 1987, written and illustrated by Matt Wagner. Alan Grant followed this with an Etrigan feature in Action Comics Weekly #636-641 and a second ongoing title in 1990. The 1990 series lasted 58 issues, two Annuals and one #0 issue. Garth Ennis took over the title beginning with issue #40. Ennis' run included the first appearance of his character Hitman. This series was followed by a miniseries, Driven Out. Following this, John Byrne's Blood of the Demon lasted 17 issues, and ignored much of the continuity that took place after Kirby's initial run. While his first monthly comic book series was short-lived, and his second was canceled after five years, Etrigan remains a popular supporting character with occasional additional miniseries. Series in which Etrigan has appeared include Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Kevin Smith's Green Arrow and Batman: The Widening Gyre, Garth Ennis's Hitman, and Cosmic Odyssey by Jim Starlin and Mike Mignola. In this dark and thrilling episode, I sit down with comics legends Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones to talk about their gothic team-up on a new Dracula graphic novel series — a fresh, nightmarish take on the Lord of the Undead that blends Hammer horror, classic literature, and modern comics craft. We also dive deep into their iconic Batman work. Matt Wagner reflects on his acclaimed retellings of the Dark Knight's formative years in Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk, grounded updates of the original Detective Comics stories that shaped Gotham's early shadows. Meanwhile, Kelley Jones revisits his unforgettable Batman: Red Rain, a horror-infused Elseworlds classic that reimagines Batman as a literal creature of the night — a vampire battling Dracula himself. Plus: Kelley's eerie, emotional Deadman mini-series, their shared love of horror as mythmaking, and what it means to push iconic characters into darker, more psychological terrain. A must-listen for fans of Batman, monsters, and the art of gothic reinvention.
