It started out as a monthly event that I did back in high school where I'd bring in my guitar and play music for people in the cafeterias. I would normally keep it upbeat and inspirational to help lighten the load of the stresses of classes and life. It later evolved into a little web series in freshman year of college where I wanted it to be a platform for music and motivation. I have featured a number of artists from my college community on it for my “Concert Series” specials, and have included community and charity highlights to help shed light on important topics and causes. Then, during the earlier months of the pandemic, I did weekly live stream concerts for friends and family. I would assess the vibe of the week, along with taking recommendations, and would create various themes. After taking a break, I want to return to more narrative/interview based episodes, along with turning it into a podcast. In this new podcast format, this will be a part of what I will be calling “Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series." I want to sit down and talk with people in various job fields about how Covid has affected business, but also highlight the creativity and process people have been making, especially speaking with colleagues in the music and film industries, along with continuing to highlight charity organizations. Besides that, I really want to focus on the topic of mindfulness throughout. During this pandemic, I got to a point where I felt very lost and outside myself. It was a bit of an identity crisis of sorts, and I’ve been looking for positive outlets in order to learn, grow, and rebuild. As I'm finding my way back, I want to highlight and dedicate other episodes to topics that are important to me, such as loss/grieving, alcohol abuse, therapy, benefits of meditation, various aspects of the healthcare system, mindfulness, and much more. “Walsh Wednesday” is supposed to be a dialogue, not a monologue, so I am very excited to "Shine" some light on some great conversations! So, say "Yes" to tuning into this Walsh Wednesday Podcast, and I look forward to "Spending Some Time." Every episode holds a very special place in my heart, but this was particularly meaningful for me becauseI was able to interview the woman who was my first musical instructor- and it was her first ever podcast appearance! On today's episode, it's my honor to introduce award winning singer/songwriter/guitarist/educator Helen Avakian. It has been a while since Helen and I have seen each other, but it was wonderful catching up, and learning even more about her backstory. Bringing it back to her early education Delaware, to how she moved to New York and how we met, to where she is now in Wisconsin, Helen went into detail about how her passion grew. We also had an indepth conversation on focal dystonia, her challenges with it, and how mindful practice is key to building your skills and overall health. And lastly, we wrap things up about talking about some musical achievements, including the story behind her 2014 Fingerstyle Championship win along with other amazing awards and accomplishments. In regards to music, Helen had some fun with aliteration. So, on today's Walsh Wednesday, you get to hear "Wilma's Waltz" and "Waking Up in Winfield," both accompanied by her partner, David Irwin. For links people can find Helen Avakian at www.helenavakian.com as an artist and instructor. Here is Helen Avakian's Facebook artist page. https://www.facebook.com/HelenAvakianMusic/
Hey everybody! We reached Episode 30! And it is just me this week. I thought we could have a narative about things opening up again, and the feelingss that come along with it. The pandemic has been difficult on us all, and as things get back to "normal," we need to recognize how we have changed, for better or for worse. Only then we can properly move forward into this new world, at whatever pace we choose. I hope you take the time to join me this week because I feel this episode could be quite the cathartic experience, especially if you have been feeling alone and overwhelmed lately.

Thank you for tuning into this marvelous episode of Walsh Wednesday. This week, we have musician and actor Jarrad Green. Jarrad shares with us much of his love for theatre, his years on the stage, how he has pivoted since the pandemic, his recent marriage and move to the UK, and much more! Jarrad and I talk deeply about what the arts and the craft mean to us, along with the importance of understanding that we are also more than our profession. I know that it was a conversation I needed. As artists, we are not solely just our craft, and we have to take the time and energy to acknowledge that, and own who we are entirely. Quite the inspiring episode, so may sure you save this episode, it is not one you would want to miss! Music education teaches students how to work together, trust in each other, and support one another to find harmony. These characteristics that music education can help nurture can bleed into any other part in life. Learning music is not for everyone, and many students who take music classes in school won’t necessarily be musicians for the rest of their lives. What will last for their lives are the developmental skills that learning an instruments, and being in an ensemble can offer. Welcome to another episode of Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. A couple weeks ago, I had a conversation with good friend, Alex Hitrick. Alex is a music educator paving his way through the pandemic to offer a sense of normalcy to his students as they too navigate their own stresses of the pandemic. In this interview, we talk about how music classes continue to be a vital outlet during a time where socialization is minimal, and how to inspire students to find the best in themselves. All of that and more, right after this. Thank you for tuning into another episode of Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. A couple weeks ago, I talked with Amanda Wingle, the Campus Sexual Assault Coordinator with the Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center. We discussed the role that the center plays in the Albany area, the importance of counseling, how people can seek help, and about their event, Take Back The Night, which is an international event with the mission of ending sexual, relationship, and domestic violence in all forms. Their event in Albany is simply one of hundreds of events are held in over 30 countries annually, and I’ve been honored to have gotten to perform at their event for the past several years, and it is an honor now to share all of this with you today. Prior to the pandemic, there was such a high demand for nostalgia- content harking back to a simpler time, a time we could escape to and enjoy. And when the pandemic came, the demand skyrocketed. This pandemic was unprecedented, and people wanted to find sources of normalcy to get through the dark days ahead. People reminisced and turned back to familiar and comfortable things. Regardless, our desire to do the things we loved with the people we loved again was prevalent in any means we tried to connect. Thank you for tuning into another episode of Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. Today, we have musician Scott EC. In this episode, we discuss our upcoming song, “Do It Again.” The song isn’t an answer to our problems, but it is an anthem for everyone struggling, missing what they had, and looking forward to they can have again. A theme that we have here on Walsh Wednesday is that music is transcending. It transcends beyond geography, location, and language because it captures the human spirit unlike anything else. Music, in itself, is a like a spirit that runs through all of us, and ties humanity together. It helps share stories, teach history, unite cultures, and create new opportunities. For these reasons, music transcends time. Thank you for tuning into Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. Today’s guest is my cousin, Maria Caswell. Resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Maria studied violin at the New England Conservatory, and is a professional violist and violinist. She performs with ensembles including the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and Voices of Music, two of the United States’s premiere Early Music ensembles. In today’s episode, I sit down with Maria to talk about the beauty of Early Music, hardships faced by orchestras during the pandemic, and how unions and law are involved with regulating virtual performances and revenue. “Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” A word from today's guest, Aileen Burke. Aileen has an upcoming memoir called “Blueberries: A Collection of Moments From a Collegiate Cancer Patient.” Today, she sits down with us to discuss many of her experiences in regards to juggling her life as a college student alongside her cancer diagnosis and treatments. "Motivation is what gets you started, it’s that little exciting taste of a new thing that keeps you coming back because you want more. But it does wear out, no matter how much you want whatever it is at the end of your tunnel. Self-discipline is much harder…. It has to be built. In some ways, it is the most important skill out there. Master self-discipline and you can go after anything you want." (Harrison Mark) And that is the core to a lot of what Harrison and I are about to talk about. Thank you for tuning into another episode of Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. With me again is my co-host for That First Step, Harrison Mark. We often find ourselves overwhelmed by the what ifs. "What if this doesn’t make enough money? What if this doesn’t get the traction I hope for? What if these people see me differently if I did this?" As important as analyzing the obstacles and weighing the cons are, the question you always have to ask yourself, through all that noise is, “what if this works?” Thank you for tuning into another episode of Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. On this episode, we speak an old friend of mine Aidan Burkhard. During 2020, Aidan has launched his own marketing business, and now hosts his own podcast called The Planet Creative Podcast. For the first episode of the new year, I have one of my best friends, Shannon O'Hara. Shannon and I go back to high school, and we took part of our school's music department, being involved in choral groups and theatre. Where I went into the music industry side, she went into music therapy. She is currently a music therapy intern with The Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine in New York City. Listen to our conversation as we talk about music therapy as a whole, how it is used to help patients, how music can influence memory, and how Covid has shaped the music therapy field.
Well, we just about made it, everyone. 2020 is about to conclude in a couple days, and we can do our best to put this year behind us. It has been difficult on many levels, but I hope there are some take aways you can get from this year. So, with New Year’s approaching, many people are thinking about their New Year’s resolution- something they want to do or improve upon for the next year. I wonder how the majority of people did with their resolutions from 2019 going into 2020. The beginning of a new year is a great time to set new goals and kick start new things; however, any time is a good time if you fully put yourself into something. My friend Harrison and I got a little head start to the resolution game for 2021. Harrison and I have started a new blog called “That First Step,” which we will be bringing you content about our first steps in chasing after personal goals. We have embarked on a 6-month challenge to better and enlighten ourselves in our own individual ways. For Harrison, he has taken up learning languages, specifically working on Spanish, for now. I decided to improve my physical wellness and mindfulness. Though we are going after different things, this whole challenge boils down to self-accountability, disciple, determination, resilience, and consistency. You see, Harrison and I have tried hard to do these things ourselves, but would either become unmotivated, or get caught up with something else. It’s much easier to go into something if you’re going into it with another person. That way, we can keep ourselves accountable and on track. As we go through this process, we will be detailing our experiences in the blog, and sharing other content that may even inspire someone else along the way. Also, I apart of the whole experiment, Harrison will be joining us on the podcast monthly where we will both talk about experiences each month. We officially started “That First Step” on December 1st, and though the month is not completely over, we felt it may be a good idea to squeeze our first podcast installment before the year was out. Thank you for tuning into Walsh Wednesday: The Reflective Series. This is part 1 of our “That First Step” installments, and without further ado, let’s get into taking those first steps. https://conorwalsh.music.blog/that-first-step/ https://www.facebook.com/thatfirststep.cwhm https://www.instagram.com/that.first.step/
