This week, Marjorie Hache chats to two up-and-coming musical outfits: Naya Mö, who comes from Bordeaux and has just released an EP, "Dealing With Ghosts", full of layered lo-fi indie; and Oracle Sisters, a trio who formed in Paris but hail from Denmark, Finland and Northern Ireland. They have just released their second mystical album "Divinations", full of psych-tinted folk. We also take a look at Elton John's collaborative album with Brandi Carlile, "Who Believes In Angels?"

"The field recording of the "Día de los muertos" consist mainly of murmur and low crowd sounds, some laughter and children shouting. To combine this with the celebrations that go along with the Day of the Dead I was listening to various traditional music that is typically played. That included rancheras, cumbias, Son Jarocho etc. I then found the quite well known traditional song "La Sandunga", which has its roots in the state of Oaxaca. Dating back to the 19th century I included that melody into my track, with the original field recording weaving in and out to that tune. "I wanted at least parts of the field recording to be recognizable to keep that live feeling of the special place and event. These are processed into more eery sounds until the rhythm starts and that also appear in the middle and the end. So the whole thing tries to combine that silent respect, remembering of the dear ones who passed, and a bit of superstition and gloomy feelings that surrounds death - and the celebration of life at the same time. "Between verse and chorus there's a more modern and "funky" interlude. It should reflect that tradition and modern world can meet and find a way together. "On a personal level, death is something that is not that far away and abstract any longer, as it used to be in younger years (being almost 60 years old). Dear family members and friends have passed away, and it seems that time is becoming more valuable day by day. Death is something that is dealt with on a very personal level here in Germany, and it is not really part of our culture. So with this track I also bow to the Mexican culture that reveales this part of our existence, gives death a respectful place in society, and yet at the same time creates a celebration of life on the "Día de los muertos". "Many sounds were created from the original sample - the ambient and percussive sounds, and some of the melodic sounds. To connect this to the sounds that may be heard in Mexico, when the traditional live bands are playing, I added a (slightly distorted) guitar, a viola and brass as virtual instruments to the track. Melodies were recorded with very little editing. It is supposed not to be 100 % perfect and to have that somewhat lo-fi sound. That way the song may keep the live atmosphere of the field recording. "The track was created in Cubase 14 Pro. Sounds were processed and sampled using Audacity, Battery 4, Native Instruments Form/Guitar Rig 7, Dawesome Myth, Dawesome Love. The "real" instruments were Native Instruments Strummed Acoustic and Session Horns, and Expressive E Arche Viola." The Seworoworo or commonly known as the Mouth Bow, is one of the world's oldest instrument, originally invented by the Bushmen. I really feel lucky that I had the chance to record it right at the very heart of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The instument is played by Tango, a young man from the Delta. Birds sing during his playing as well. This instrument has a palm-leaf string that is made to vibrate by rubbing a stick across notches cut in the bow stave. This action produces a rhythmic whirring sound in addition to the echo sounds made by Tango 's mouth when he gently blows the string. These very grounded and primitive sounds are truly wonderful and so unique in the sound world heritage. I feel that this is an enchanted sound world rediscovered. All my life I felt awkward and out of place, not because of my religion, but because of my spiritual gifts. It was hard to combine the idea of what first seemed like two separate worlds. So my whole life I have tried. I have learnt more about my gifts, and stayed faithful to my faith. But then I heard people left the church because it seems impossible to combine the two. So I am here, to try and mend the rift. To show that it is possible to be both LDS and to have, and use, our spiritual gifts. I am not alone on this journey, but my sister, who just is waking up to her spiritual gifts is by my side and she will also share her story.Jesus Christ, our older brother, was a healer. He asked us to love one another. So let´s follow in his footsteps. Please join me on this journey, let´s make a community of strong spiritual LDS, or whatever religion you belong to, and all work together to make this world a better place. If you like what I do, then you can find me here:https://linktr.ee/ldsandmediumIf you have words of support or stories that you anonymously want me to share please write me at ldsandmedium@gmail.com. For this week's bonus episode, we have something very special for you - the second installment of our new series, Forgotten Melodies, which is all about folk music, featuring explorations of types of folk song and original recordings which put fresh spins on trad tunes! In this episode we are talking all about Ben's absolute favourite kind of folk song, the Sea Shanty, as well as 'Songs of the Sea' more generally - including three brand new versions of classics of the genre, "Haul Away Joe," "Santiana," and "Spanish Ladies." If you've never heard of a Sea Shanty then don't worry - as ever, Eleanor and Ben will talk us all through the song-types' musical features, and Martin will become increasingly befuddled by nautical terminology! We'll be chatting through their history, too, from the roots of the form in African and African American work songs to which kinds of nautical musics were prohibited by the Navy, the reasons why shanties died out (and so quickly roared back into popularity) as well as other rum-soaked mysteries. Such as, why did pirates definitely not play concertinas? What does it take to make something 'ship shape and Bristol fashion?' And what exactly does it take to stop a cat? This one has it all: stolen wooden legs, sandy bottoms, and plenty of 'Drawing Room Safe' terminology that is very likely to make you giggle! We really hope you enjoy it, and will see you on deck, sailor! Once you've swabbed the galley, shivered your timbers, and paid the Shanty Man his dues, of course! Gyaaaargh! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. A lot of Roy Ayers this afternoon, to mark the passing of the great vibraphonist and band leader — and, sadly, of several other luminaries including r'n'b saxophonist Gene Barge (aka Daddy G, the template for Clarence Clemons), David Johansen (featuring a first-ever appearance on any Jazz show anywhere by the New York Dolls!), and of course jazz, soul and pop singer Roberta Flack. Two special guests also join Blind Mango in the studio this afternoon: Ben Fernandez plays his diminutive keyboard and talks about his many upcoming projects (including Bollywood and Jazz) and ongoing musical ‘Mix Day for Melodies' at ASB Waterfront Theatre, every day until March 23rd. And Frances swings by to announce the Jazz GigGuide live, and stays to discuss future events and shared jazz memories.

The band is back! This Sunday at the "Unchained Melodies" show, the Evensong Quintet is playing a live recording concert of tunes in the public domain. Many of the best songwriters of the “Tin Pan Alley” era wrote some of their most enduring songs during the late 1920s, and many of these songs fall into public domain this year. Jazz musicians have long favored the work of these giants: George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael to name a few. For generations, big corporations have controlled the performance rights to this material, now these national treasures are free to be performed and recorded without restrictions.
The band Horsegirl is three best friends from Chicago who began playing together while still in high school. But their 2022 debut album, Versions of Modern Performance, showed a band that already had a distinctive sound that showed that DIY didn't necessarily mean simple. With two of the three musicians now attending NYU, the band has moved here to New York. Taking a break from Antigone and Oedipus, they're here to play some songs from their new album, called Phonetics On And On. Horsegirl plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Where'd You Go 2. Switch Over 3. 2468 Phonetics On and On by Horsegirl

Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comI'm honored to have back on the show for the third time: Multi-generational sexual abuse and trafficking survivor, technology sales extraordinaire, aspiring singer and songwriter who dreams of bringing to life music to help empower other survivors, animal and child rescue advocate, whistleblower of what I will be referring to as ‘The Original Pizzagate' scandal involving a suspicious pizza delivery company called Cyber Slice, and a modern day Katniss Everdeen: Madison Clares Madison, born as one of twin siblings, entered a world shaped by her father, a co-founder of Cyber Slice, the first online pizza delivery service. With claims of being an ex-CIA assassin, her father painted a complex portrait of their family's history. Both Madison and her twin sister spent the initial six weeks of their lives in the hospital due to premature birth. Upon delving into her past, Madison uncovered a web of occult, military, and CIA ties within her family, tracing back through generations to her Freemason great-grandfather. This legacy of darkness included abuse that began when she was just four years old, perpetrated by her father and one of his business partners, Tim Glass, under the guise of their company, Cyber Slice.Cyber Slice, while innovative in the food industry, served a sinister purpose under her father's control. His frequent travels for work, serving clients like Bill Gates, were a cover for his abusive nature. He oscillated between playfulness and violence, using joy to mask his monstrous acts. His manipulations extended to forcing Madison and her sister into sexual acts, recordings of which were used to draw other predators to the Cyber Slice platform. Here, 'pizza' was not just a food item but a code word for young girls, a chilling revelation backed by FBI documentation. The concept of Cyber Slice was inspired by the film 'The Net', leading to an ironic twist where Steve Jobs, during his time away from Apple, was the first to order pizza online through this service, participating in its early development.Madison's memories of this harrowing childhood began to resurface at 14, igniting her quest for truth and healing. Despite presenting substantial evidence, she has faced resistance from the FBI, police, and CPS in her fight for her 12-year-old brother's custody. In today's episode, we're not only celebrating the launch of Madison's new album and her musical journey but also diving into the challenges of being a whistleblower. Madison will share insights on the recent smear campaigns aimed at discrediting her and the disheartening efforts to silence her voice. She'll discuss her healing process, how she navigates the aftermath of her experiences, and much more.STREAM AND LISTEN TO MADISON'S NEW ALBUM: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3tkM0Vi3MFdKZGnz7GXdy9?si=z-hKwKjISYWzOCAqpK9a9QCONNECT WITH MADISON: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@madisonclaresmusicIG: https://www.instagram.com/madisonclares.music/X / Twitter: https://x.com/madisonclaresCONNECT WITH THE IMAGINATION:EMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com OR standbysurvivors@protonmail.comMy Substack: https://emmakatherine.substack.com/BUY ME A COFFEE: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/theimaginationSupport the show
