Paul and Jarrad are back from their extended training trip to Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee. During that time they had the opportunity to conduct some low light / night shooting. What was unique and what lessons were learned. We dive in during the Tech Talk from EOTech Inc. During our SOTG Homeroom, we had a sad story to report. Nonetheless, the lesson is an important one. You don't get to decide when you are going to have the worst day of your life, someone else will decide that. All you can do is be prepared to deal with it. Jarrad Goulding is the CEO & Founder of The Local Guys group. Previously he had been a franchisee in Boost Juice and a restaurant franchise. Jarrad and his partner Stacey were lucky enough to be part of a great franchise network in Boost Juice & a not-so-great franchise in their restaurant franchise. With these experiences, they saw the best and worst of franchising, which gave them the knowledge to mould a successful franchise model with The Lucky Guys. They used provisions such as flat fees and easy-to-exit agreements all in non-corporate culture. They have grown to 78 franchise partners in a little over five years including Covid in the first year. You learned which streets you could walk on and which ones you did not dare to. However, by 1983, when we lived off of “Six and Gratiot” the city was taking a hard turn for the worse. My mother was born and lived for a time in rural Ohio in her youth. My parents decided that we needed a change from city life so, like the Beverly Hillbillies in reverse, we packed up the truck and moved from the bright lights of the big city to the cornfields of rural Holmes County, Ohio. It turned out to be one of the best and most important experiences of my life.      A “Hobby Farm” Leaving Detroit behind, we moved into a small farm house that had previously been built by the English, but most recently owned by the Amish, therefore it had no electricity, telephone, etc. when we took occupancy. There were indoor plumbing and fixtures, but they weren't hooked up. For the first few weeks we roughed it, lighting the house with kerosene lamps in the evening, using an outhouse and drawing water from an outside well. There was a genuine wood-burning cook stove in the kitchen where my mother prepared our hot food until the electrician came to hook up the power and the plumber got the inside water running. The recorded use of pistols in defense against bears has grown by two orders of magnitude in recent decades. As pistols came into common use, they were almost certainly used in defense against animal attacks. Portable, reasonably reliable pistols, which could be used as a defensive weapon against an unexpected attack, were unavailable until about 1534 when wheellock pistols became available.  They were relatively expensive. Arms of the period were commonly privately owned. Some were likely used in defense against animals. Europe, at the time, had much wild land. Bears, except for those in captivity, had been eliminated from England. Wild bears still existed in the mainland of Europe. Paul and Jarrad are back in the studio with an after-action report regarding the learning points from this course. If you have a Ruger 10/22 in your hands, 100 yards is long range. If you're shooting at a whitetail with a Remington 870 loaded with slugs, an 87 yard shot is long range. However, when you move west of the Mississippi River and the country starts to open up, long range with centerfire rifles doesn't even begin until you are farther than 300 yards. Some would argue that long range doesn't start until you are past 500 yards.  Regardless of your definition of what “long range” shooting happens to be, I think we can all agree that the primary goal of rifle marksmanship is to be able to hit your target with the first shot, on demand, regardless of the conditions or the distance. Such is the stated goal of the High Elevation Precision Rifle class put on by Student of the Gun each summer in wonderful Wyoming.    (Click Here for Full Article)   From www.foxnews.com: A Montana couple got an unwelcome visitor when they found a black bear in their living room and took matters into their own hands, shooting and killing the intruder. Seeley Oblander and her fiancé, Thomas Bolkcom, were awakened at 3 a.m. to one of their two dogs, Maizey, barking ferociously. While the couple initially brushed the howling off, figuring a raccoon or a skunk had caught the dog's attention, Bolkcom eventually walked downstairs to see what was going on after the dog would not stop making a ruckus.  When Bolkcom, a commercial painter and elk hunter, went to investigate and tried to coax the Labrador-pit bull mix downstairs, he found a "black bear standing in the living room five feet away," Oblander said. Wearing just a T-shirt and underwear, Bolkcom ran back downstairs, got a handgun and returned to the living room where he shot the bear. Last year, a committee on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—a Switzerland-based organization that sets and monitors quality standards for a variety of industries—voted to establish a new merchant category code (MCC) for firearms. The firearms-specific MCC would allow financial institutions to track gun sales separately from the “general merchandise” category on other retail products. Gun rights advocates have pushed back against the firearms-specific MCCs, and lawmakers in several states have begun pursuing legislation to block the gun-purchase tracking agenda.
