Whether you're eight or in your eighties, you're likely familiar with the best-selling children's book author Marguerite Henry. Her book “Misty of Chincoteague” is one of the most popular children's books of all time. It's about a pony named Misty, and any horse loving kid will tell you they read that book cover to cover, multiple times, and probably have the Misty Breyer horse model somewhere still in their possession. Marguerite Henry was born in Milwaukee in 1902 and died in California in 1997. Her life's work, all of her notes and papers, is now at the University of Minnesota. It has become the basis of the new book, “Dear Readers and Riders: The Beloved Books, Faithful Fans, and Hidden Private Life of Marguerite Henry.” The biography was written by Lettie Teague, The Wall Street Journal's wine columnist.Lettie visited the Twin Cities to talk about the book Tuesday night at Elmer L Anderson Library on the University of Minnesota campus and she joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer for a conversation about her work.

Misty of Chincoteague - an iconic pony, an unforgettable story, and a tale that connects all equestrians. Acclaimed author Susan Friedland revisited this magical children's book a few years ago and wondered, “Who was the Newbery Medal-winning author and literary legend Marguerite Henry?” While many know Marguerite's beloved books, the woman behind them remains a mystery to most. Susan's curiosity led her on a journey to understand Misty through Marguerite's perspective and to uncover the life of Marguerite Henry herself. Intelligent, articulate, creative, and classy, Marguerite was also kind, warm, and funny. She was a trailblazer in many ways. Susan's quest culminated in her book, "Marguerite, Misty & Me," a must-read that takes us along on her personal journey of discovering everyone's cherished childhood author. This week we chat with Kari Heggen, a bookstagrammer from Iowa who set herself a goal to read all the Newbery Award winners from the past 102 years. Originally she had planned to read 10 a year but she ultimately decided to just get her done. She read 49 of the winners in 2023 and got a jump start on 2024 by reading this year's winner, The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers. Kari talks about the highs and lows of her Newbery Award challenge. Books from the early days of the award were decidedly not great. But by the 1960s, Kari got into a better groove and found herself enjoying books for the first time and often the second time which brought back some childhood nostalgia. Tonight, we'll read the opening to “Stormy, Misty's Foal” a children's novel written by Marguerite Henry and published in 1963. The Chincoteague pony, also known as the Assateague horse, is a breed of horse that developed, and now lives, within a semi-feral island population off the US states of Virginia and Maryland. The Chincoteague pony is one of the many breeds of feral horses in the United States, but it was made famous by the series of pony books written by this author about Misty, the mother of Stormy. The story describes events on the island during a powerful hurricane of 1962. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Corn has never been given a fair shake. The evils of high fructose corn syrup have been bellowed from every soapbox, the most commonly grown corn is for animal feed, and is generally, not a much-beloved ingredient. This has also been the case in beer. Even as recent as 2019, Bud Light ran an ad during the Super Bowl calling out Coors Light and Miller Lite for using corn syrup in their beer. But the trend of lighter, more session-able beers is on the rise, including corn lagers. Some of the best breweries in the country are using heirloom varietals of corn in their beers- Fonta Flora, Bow & Arrow, and Black Narrows, to name a few. Josh Chapman, founder of Black Narrows Brewing Company in Chincoteague, VA joins the show to talk all things corn lager. We dive into the specific corn they use for their flagship "How Bout It" corn lager (Bloody Butcher heirloom corn from Bill & Bob Savage). Josh takes us through special brewing considerations needed for brewing with corn and how to keep the integrity of the corn flavor. The surface has only been scratched with corn lagers here on Beer Me! So we will undoubtedly return to this subject again.MUSIC CREDIT: The following music was used for this media project:Music: Funky Intro 31 by TaigaSoundProdFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9552-funky-intro-31License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

Beer can taste delicious, but how good can it be if it doesn't do fantastic things for its community? Josh Chapman thought long and hard about this question. So he started charting a path with Black Narrows Brewing to take simple ingredients from local sources to make delicious beer in Chincoteague, VA. Mike shares a pint with Josh, Co-founder and Head Brewer of Black Narrows Brewing. When Black Narrows opened, Josh and his team wanted to set the bar of what local beer should look like. So they decided to follow this principle: find the best local ingredients in season and don't alter them by much. Josh shares how by this principle, Black Narrows is crafting beer that focuses on its locality and community while being flavorful and delicious to drink. The Virginia Senate voted unanimously to confirm the Chincoteague pony's new designation. The pony joins the Northern cardinal and Virginia big-eared bat as state symbols.
IN THE NEWS:The Idaho Stop: Senator Deeds proposed legislation that would give local governments authority to adopt local ordinances giving cyclists more leeway at stop signs--something that would benefit cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians alike. But the momentum of the legislation stalled after House Republicans voiced their concerns.A bill to make the Chincoteague pony the official state pony of Virginia has faced opposition from the Southwest delegation, whose members also have wild ponies roaming their districts. A new Democratic resolution would have Virginia acknowledge its sordid past of grave-robbing Black cemetaries for medical experimentation in the 1800s. But a Republican-controlled House panel rejected the bill last week.At the Watercooler:The casino bill is dead for now, which is good news for the potential of a Richmond casino. In the absence of formal abortion legislation, Democrats are attempting a rules-change maneuver to force floor discussion of abortion and put both Republicans and Democrats on the record for where they stand.Trivia: The end of the General Assembly session is known as sine die. In the stillness of winter, the waves still roll in and out, in and out, slicking the sandy shore of Assateague Island, a narrow thirty seven mile long barrier island which spans both Maryland and Virginia between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sinepuxent Bay. The wind can be sharp this time of year, rustling the sand into small ever changing dunes, and the temperature is nippy. In the cold of the Mid-Atlantic winter, no swimmers sluice through the water, no sunbathers lie on blankets or towels strewn across the shore. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see, an inviting expanse of sand and ocean treasures brought in on the tide. The famous horses roam the island even in winter, grazing in the tall marsh grasses on the bay side of the island, trotting along the beach, nosing around the trash receptacles in the picnic areas and campgrounds. They are ever present on the island, and the reason that many people visit Assateague, combining a beach camping trip with the novelty of wild horses all around. Drawn by the annual Pony Penning, also known as the Chesapeake Pony Swim, or nostalgia for Marguerite Henry's beloved book Misty of Chincoteague, throngs of people descend on Assateague Island in the spring and summer. But in the winter, without the crowds and their noise, without the smell of picnics, without all the distractions that high season brings, Assateague offers up a different kind of experience, full of quiet discovery. He was born to a herd of wild horses on an island off Virginia and found his way into the heart of a little girl on the dusty trails of the Southwest. Legend was a descendant of fabled swimming ponies: every year, cowboys lead them across a quarter-mile crossing between the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague, where 60 of them are put up for auction. In this episode of our Weekend Read series, we hear how Legend's journey took him thousands of miles West, and eventually to a child that would return him to the sand and waves at the end of his days. The famous Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are known the world over. For many, the children's classics "Misty of Chincoteague" and "Stormy: Misty's Foal" brought this part of Virginia's Eastern Shore to mind. Tourists flock to this region annually, not only for the horses, but for the points of interest, the art galleries, and the local cuisine. David Parmelee's latest release for Sunbury Press is "The Traveler's Guide to Chincoteague and Assateague: A Shortcut to the Magic" provides history, insight and stories of the islands, which will prepare the reader for their first visit, or new places repeat visitors might not know about. In this program, Parmelee tells of how the horses (might have) arrived here and includes interviews with local residents and others that tell of the allure of this undeveloped paradise. "The Traveler's Guide..." is Parmelee's latest release for Sunbury Press Books. "The Sea is a Thief," an historical romance set during the American Civil War was released in 2013; Parmelee is also the author of the hilarious middle grade books, "Miss Feesenschneesen is Ill" and "Miss Feesenschneesen is Fit." An actor, director and playwright, Parmelee's one-act plays "TOAST," "The Comment Section" and "Three Romances about Macbeth" have been produced by community theaters across Northeast Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife and four children.
