Sherry Lavone is a graphic designer and an award winning Creative Director. But I don't think we talked about that at all because she's also a farmer, foster mom, dog breeder, super amateur tattoo artist, and a former party girl. We talk about her journey from sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll to sobriety and spirituality. Sherry is a good friend of mine, she has WAY more tattoos than what's shown in the cover art (I couldn't draw them!), and I really loved our convo. Enjoy!  

Jenna McKaye is a sex trafficking survivor and is back for round 2! She works hard everyday to heal from that trauma, and now she travels around educating various groups on trafficking and is just an all around badass. We talk specifically about SB-1042 - a bill that would have harsher punishments for traffickers. Listen. Participate. Enjoy! 

There was a movie recently made in the Yuba-Sutter area! And I got to sit with the writer and director of the movie Lyvia's Hosue. We talk all about what goes in to making a movie, the hurdles, the tweaks, Easter eggs, and so much more. Both guests are extremely talented and it was a joy to get to sit and talk with them.

It's tax season, and boy do I have an episode for you! Seth and Stephan Fuhrer are a couple of wise taxperts (thank you fellas for that one) with Nickell Tax & Financial Planning. And guess what!? This episode was a hoot! Lots of good information, and it's all wrapped up in one entertaining podcast. As a bonus, we get to hear the interesting story of how they became Fuhrers. I got to sit down with Steve Kroeger and Alex Mazerolle with Project Blue Zone Yuba-Sutter and learn all about what they're up to in our community. Robert Summa is the new editor of the Appeal Democrat. We talked about his adventurous journey across America to get to our neck of the woods (and we get to hear his first thoughts of our area), his time building a name in the gaming world, and we talked a bit about the newspaper and how it all works. Gary Jensen is a DJ for the morning show on 93Q, and he's a dirk bike guy, a music man (he was the bassist in SPORK!!!), and he runs a family business. I've known GareBear for a while and he's seriously one of the best people I know. It was great catching up with him and chatting for a bit. Enjoy! 

I thought Robbie was just a cool geeky guy that hangs out at Wide Awake Geek all the time helping entrepreneurs get started. But I learned he's an important local coffee guy, an EMT guy, and a music guy. And I'm probably forgetting some of the other things he does. It always blows my mind what some people accomplish at such a young age. Enjoy!

Justin France is the owner of Justin's Kitchen - my favorite eatery in the Yuba-Sutter area. I asked him all sorts of questions about the restaurant biz, we talked about his past life as an opera singer, I learned why I can't keep eggshells out of my eggs when I crack them, we drank some pickled beer and talked pickles for a bit, and a whole bunch more! I was so excited for this one and it did not disappoint. Andre Licon works for the Sutter County Sheriff's as part of the Community Response Team. We talk policing. He answers my dumb questions. And he shares some good stories. It was a really great conversation and this is a great opportunity to get to know your friendly neighborhood Sheriffman.  

Kiara Rose is incredibly interesting. She's an author, public speaker, surgeon assistant, and she's only a junior in college. And she's only 17. We talk about all of that jazz, and we talk about getting bullied, rebuilding after the cascade fire, and a bunch of other stuff. She's impressive and she's going places! 

In this episode we dive in to Courtney Payne's efforts to help people (she organized a wildly successful clothes drive for women), her work life, and her quest to track down her biological father after taking a 23 and Me DNA test and how she is connected to the Black Dahlia Murders. She also runs a Facebook group dedicated to frugality and getting things for free (like a $5,000 trip for her and her friend!). We had a lot of fun in this one! Enjoy!!

Stevie Ten Bears is the drummer for the Irish band ONOFF. We talk about his start in music, touring Europe, and how to perfectly pour a Guinness stout. We hear some fun and interesting stories, learn a little history, and then we veer off to good ol' aliens and conspiracies! I really enjoyed the talk and you will too! 

Super fun episode. Kelly Trudell is unapologetically messy and imperfect (her words, not mine!) and is an absolute joy to talk to. She was the first female fire captain, loves adventure, and is a involved in all sorts of goodness in the community. She also hosts a weekly chat on Facebook with a member of the community. Enjoy!

I was so happy to have one of my favorite power couples on the YaS Cast. Nicole and David Rubio are CRUSHIN it! They've built their business, Rolling Retreats, from a single travel trailer rental to a fleet of options to meet your needs. In addition to that, they have a surprise announcement that you can hear first smack dab in the middle of this episode! Brent Hastey is the vice chairman on the board for the Yuba Water Agency (hopefully I got that right). He’s also the District Governor for Rotary District 5180. And he’s a Jeep guy. I enjoyed this conversation so much! We talk about some of the interesting history of the area, as well as some exciting possibilities for the future.  And of course we touch on the Yuba Water Agency and al the money it generates (it’s A LOT!) and some of the projects they work on to the benefit of the community. Lots of shared wisdom in this one!

This year was a milestone birthday - I turned 40! Lots of people plan big bashes for turning 40, but it's the Year of the Virus and we are all on lockdown. I absolutely LOVE my birthday, and I've had plenty of great ones throughout the years. This year was an exception.Somehow my wife managed to give me the greatest birthday ever. It turns out people like hearing other people say wonderful things about them and I'm no different. Bruce Helft is running for the North Yuba Water District Board. We had lots of water talk, we touched on what it's like running for office, and we touched on some of his experience that qualifies him for the position. He's a smarty-pants that has accomplished a lot and I really enjoyed the conversation!

What a fun and inspiring convo with self-taught makeup artist Angie Cuevas!  Her journey into special effects and makeup has led her to work on movies and land acting gigs. She's also kind of a badass that used to do roller derby, she's rolled a Jeep (in a fun way), and now she's working on her own screenplay!Also, she came to the convo looking just like me!!!!Enjoy!

Trafficking is such a huge topic right now, and there is no better way to learn about it than from someone who was trafficked. Jenna McKaye shares her experiences being of trafficked. How she fell in to it, why it's so hard to leave, and the long road to recovery if you manage to leave. We also touch on the importance of education about trafficking, signs of trafficking, and more.There was so much more to trafficking than I realized and it really looks way different than what I thought. This episode was definitely and eye-opener and I'm certain it will be for you as well.

I talk with her mom, Denise Thompson, about Chandra and the details surrounding her disappearance, and the fight Denise fights to keep the investigation going. Megan Anderson is a leader in the community, and we had a really great conversation about race and policing within the community. What's it like to be black in Yuba-Sutter? What's up with local policing? And what's up with so much more!? This is obviously a heavy topic that we somehow managed to get through with a ton of laughs. Rocki Raccoon is a former hobo (yes, she hopped on moving freight trains to travel!!), a current artist, and an all around badass. She makes glass "sculptures" *wink* and cool masks and she is an all-around badass. She shares stories of her travels back and forth to Sweden (she has dual citizenship), and stories of the interesting people and places she come across. I never would have thought coffee and gardening would have been two topics talked about when diving in to a conversation with ONOFF guitarist/singer Paulie O'Noff. I'm also totally on board with his "late bloomer" theory. We also talked about touring Europe and I got to hear a few stories of some of the famous musicians he's met. Drew Robertson isn't even 18 yet, but he's managed to purchase a vehicle, lawn care equipment, and a trailer for trash removal to start is own lawn care and trash haling business. If if it wasn't clear, he did this on his own with his own money. I was super impressed and you will be too. 

If you want to hear a story of a powerful (and empowering) woman traveling the world in her twenties, this is your chance. There were 3 or 4 moments throughout her travels where Jennifer was just flippin' badass. She's also a CEO, a mom, and a friend and I absolutely enjoyed this conversation. 

Stuart Gilchrist is the owner of Gilchrist "Whatnot" in Marysville, and he's running for Marysville City Council (FYI he's super passionate about this area and it shows). We talk a bit about his interesting life and career, his running for office, and so much more. Enjoy!
