About a half hour from Reno, there's a place called Virginia City Nevada, where everything feels like it's 1859 and the US's largest silver deposit was just discovered. The bars say saloon and look the part. The cemetery is definitely haunted. And of course there's a custom hatmaker—who shares a space in one of Virgnia City's oldest surviving buildings with bespoke cowboy bootmaker Jake Houston. Jake Houston wasn't the first person to fall victim to the wonderful folly of “the boots I want are too expensive, so I'll just figure out how to make them.” One Lisa Sorrell DVD set, a few rodeos, and over a decade later, Jake has put together an impressively well-rounded business in Virginia City, making fully custom cowboy boots, while also finding vintage pairs to sell in the shop alongside his more affordable Houston Boot Company “shelf” boots made in Leon Mexico. Jake and I had a fantastic chat about his bootmaking journey, the time he glued the lasts into a customers' pair, the half-decade path to get those shelf boots manufactured, his insistence on sharing his bootmaking knowledge—for free—and why people sometimes get really, really upset when you tell them what bespoke cowboy boots cost. Here's Jake Houston, on the Shoecast. https://www.houstonbootcompany.com/https://www.instagram.com/houstonbootco/ Support the Shoecast, get full bonus episode access, and join the most interesting shoe-and-boot-loving community on the internet with a Stitchdown Premium membershiphttps://www.stitchdown.com/join-stitchdown-premium/Check out our site!https://www.stitchdown.com/2025 dates and location for Stitchdown's Boot Camp 3—the world's fair of shoes and boots and leather and more—coming soon.https://www.stitchdownbootcamp.com/

For Episode 223 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we're a little all over the place. It was a week.Reminder: Serving Salvation Book Two will be released on May 14. Book One got very nice reviews, and the B1 ebook is available for 99 cents on the major platforms. Check out our Books page.Happy Mother's Day not only to mothers, but to those who step up and be a mother in times of need. And to the dads who ran out to the store at the last minute for their kids. Here's a story all writers can relate to. We were blessed with a visit from the grandkids on Saturday, and our youngest mentioned they were taking a school field trip to Virginia City, Nevada (they live in Sparks). When CC mentioned she wrote a book about Virginia City, the grandkid said, “But you're retired.”Context: they are the child of a New York Times bestselling author, and the grandchild of two full-time authors, so they intuitively understand at ten years old that writing is hard work. We wish everyone was so intelligent (objectively speaking).Aside from that, we spent most of the week editing, editing, and editing. CC tells of her challenges this week getting her book back to Red Adept under the deadline. The other significant event was the May 7 kickoff of the Nevada Authors network, our partnership with the Sierra Arts Foundation to highlight a local writer every week. We will interview Mariposa Cruz for the May 14 broadcast. In this episode of Talking Strange, we pause to share a couple listener submitted stories. First up, listener Mike shares his tales from Virginia City, Nevada. After hearing our episodes about the Reno Tahoe Territory, and visiting the Washoe Club, he wanted to talk about perhaps encountering the ghost of an old cowboy. Then, listener Chad tells about his personal connection to the UFO over Lake Oneida, New York, in 1997. Occurring just a few months after the famed Phoenix Lights, this looked remarkably similar. As if that's not strange enough, Chad's family's footage of the lights gained enough attention that he believes it is connected to a visitation of strange Men in Black-type characters, as well as his own mystery illness. Don't forget to submit your own stories so you, too, can be included in a future episode. _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 205 of our lovely award-winning podcast, we look forward to 2025 and how we had to hit the ground running! We were retired slackers for much of December 2024, though we did get organized and got Finding Salvation Part One out the door. Our plan was to relax in December 2024 and get to work in January 2025. January must have heard us because everything that can happen to a writer happened to us in the first two days of the month, including manuscripts returned by our editors, LLC paperwork back from our lawyer, and a half dozen other things that keep writers busy. Whew. We again plug the Sierra Arts Foundation and their fantastic support of Nevada writers. Through them, we are getting out of the house and getting our Nevada-centric novels on bookshelves. We are grateful. One thing we inflicted on ourselves is our trip to Virginia City where we will spend the night in one of VC's most haunted hotels (so they say). CC is working on a paranormal romance set on the Comstock Lode in 1875 at the height of Nevada's Silver Rush, so we're doing the hotel for literary ambiance. We're suffering for our art, and our readers, because we care. We'll probably travel outside of Nevada once or twice this year. We've done almost every US state together, and we've seen Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, and Scotland. Will we discover new lands or go back to old haunts? You'll probably know when we know. The new years will see us releasing more books:Finding Salvation Part One on January 31 (99 cents!) ZOEY in February or March Serving Salvation Book Two in 2025 CC's Virginia City ghost book in mid-2025 If you want to see advanced copies, check out Book Sirens where you can become an advanced review copy (ARC) reader and leave reviews. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Busy week here at the World-Wide Headquarters. So busy, if fact, that we didn't get to today's chosen topic. We'll do that next week. We touched on a lot: We talk about the fun of being fan-owners of the Oakland Ballers, a pro baseball team that proudly represents the East Bay. We flash our Ballers colors! We also talk about our favorite MLB American League team, the Athletics. (I predict where they will ultimately land.) We donated books to Nevada Talking Book Services, “a free library service for Nevadans who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual or physical disability.” We were happy to support this very worthy cause. We are selling books in the Depot Gallery Book Store in Sparks, Nevada, through the Sierra Arts Foundation. That feels fantastic, especially when they sent me my first hardcopy check. “Two Moore Books LLC” continues to develop, and we spent time on the money aspect of our investment. We are doing an LLC for a feeling of authenticity and legitimacy, but I can't feel like we're hemorrhaging money. On the other hand, this is our dream: to be full-time writers, and we don't own a pair of Harley Davidsons. (We thank Sayyar Lw for guiding us through the process.) Related to this is me starting a side gig to help writers format the interior of their books using the Atticus application. I'm looking for writers to help me experiment with this, so I'll do a couple of manuscripts for free. If you have a handy manuscript, let's work together to make it a better ebook or paperback for posting to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, and Google. Here's the link. Writing: we actually did writing this week! CC is making great progress on her book based in Virginia City, and my books “ZOEY” and “Finding Salvation Part One” are in the final stages of publication. We'll start releasing these books in the next few weeks (we hope). We thank Red Adept Editing for their patience and support. Finally, we're thinking of doing a “Black Friday to Small Business Saturday to Cyber Monday” sale on some of our books. Once we figure out the details, we'll get it out on social media. Whew! In this episode, Alex covers a plethora of topics. He starts by reacting to a troubling video out of Virginia City, Nevada. In the viral video, a black man is intimidated by a group of older white locals and then they harass and laugh at him after telling him there is a hanging tree in his backyard. Next, Alex talks about Trump's recent rally in Georgia — he attacked its popular governor, ranted about the 2020 election, and praised Putin. Later, Alex talks about the anger in JD Vance and what his former Yale Law School friend thinks happened to him. Further in the episode, Alex plays the audio of RFK Jr. admitting to dumping a dead bear cub in Central Park after he wanted to skin in, but ran out of time, and thought he could leave it there. Finally, as the stock market has dropped over the last 24 hours, Alex looks at why this is happening. Is it a recession? The AI bubble bursting? Or struggles with the Japanese Yen?

Shortly after, John Mackay hit the Bonanza Strike, one of the largest silver strikes in world history.  Mackay split the profits with his three partners: James Fair, James Flood, and William O'Brien. They became known as "The Big Four" or "The Silver Kings" of Virginia City. John Mackay, James Fair, James Flood, and William O'Brien, conducted all their mining business inside the Mackay Mansion mining office, while Mr. Mackay lived with his family in the rest of the building. This historic mansion is also a well known haunted location. Virginia City, NV rose as the center for silver mining with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 & became the nation's 1st industrial city. It was a bustling city that had cultural institutions like the opera & famous residents like Mark Twain. The Washoe Club opened its doors on B Street in the Reynolds Building on June 1, 1875. It was a luxurious space filled with giant plate glass windows & bronze statuettes & was nicknamed “The Millionaire's Club” because it was where the rich & newly rich would drink, play games, & visit with prostitutes. Less than 5 months after opening, a fire burned through downtown, destroying a good amount of Virginia City, including the Washoe Club. It didn't take long though for the club to find a new space – the trustee board for the club settled on a 3-story building on C street that even had a saloon on the bottom floor. The local mines began to diminish, Virginia City's population dwindled & the Washoe Club eventually closed in 1897. Because of the cities history with cave-ins, gunfights & greedy claim jumpers, it is no surprise that the Old Washoe Club is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in the West. Bar stools move on their own, the saloon doors will mysteriously swing open for ladies that are entering, & numerous shadow figures have been spotted on the upper floors. There are several spirits that are seen & felt in the Old Washoe Club & there is one spirit who has an affinity for alcohol. If you let a full shot of Bourbon linger too long at the bar, it will mysteriously be drained, & the staff will leave a full shot before leaving at night & it will be empty in the morning.Who or what still lingers at the Old Washoe Club? In Summer 1983, Max Jones jumped on a strange new contraption called a #mountainbike and went looking for trails to ride around #laketahoe. There wasn't really any singletrack until he discovered an abandoned flume line running high above the east shore of the lake. After a few failed attempts, Max finally uncovered the overgrown track, taking five hours to “ride” only four miles, fighting through brush and hundreds of downed trees. For the rest that summer, Max cleared the trail with nothing more than hand tools and dogged determination. 40 years later, thanks to Max's efforts, the Marlette Flume Trail has become the most scenic trail in the world and a gem of recreation in Lake Tahoe. Max and his wife Patti have built a life and career around the Flume Trail, promoting the Great Flume Race for more than a decade, starting Flume Trail Bikes to shuttle visitors and opening Tunnel Creek Café to feed them at the end of the adventure. This is the story of Max Jones, a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, the resurrector of the Flume Trail and an early pioneer of ecotourism in Lake Tahoe. 1:40 – PowBot gets a new vanity license plate – MRDRPOW – on his murdered out Crosstrek. 3:45 – Experiencing technical difficulties with our podcast player while interviewing Max Jones.5:20 – Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Max Jones reopening the Marlette Flume Trail. 10:00 – The first “winter storm” on September 1; a Pacific Low coming off the ocean!11:30 – Rose to Toads TAMBA ride is going to get snow Labor Day weekend. 13:20 – SENDY Send of the Week – 11 year anniversary of Joyce Beckering's passing – Tom's mom. BW - EP140—003: Humphrey Bogart On The Air—High Sierra And The Maltese Falcon

Breaking Walls

As the 1940s got underway, bringing the U.S. closer to World War II, Humphrey Bogart drifted socially and professionally. That year he made four films: Virginia City, It All Came True, Brother Orchid, and They Drive By Night. On Sunday January 7th, 1940 at 7:30PM eastern time over CBS, he reprised his role of Duke Mantee in a Screen Guild Theater adaptation of The Petrified Forest. The Screen Guild Theater drew several Hollywood stars a week for radio adaptations. First taking to the air on January 8th, 1939 for Gulf Oil, all fees that would normally go to stars instead were given to the Motion Picture Relief Fund. This money was used to build and maintain the Motion Picture Country House: forty bungalow units for housing aging and needy film stars. By the summer of 1942 almost eight-hundred-thousand-dollars had been raised. This episode's rating was a 13. Roughly nine million listeners tuned in. In late 1940, John Huston was adapting a script for a new film, High Sierra. Produced by Mark Hellinger and directed by Raoul Walsh, Paul Muni, George Raft, James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson all turned down the lead role, much to the delight of Huston. The character gave Bogart the chance to show his range. Finally playing someone with depth, the film was Bogart's career breakthrough, transforming him from supporting player to leading man. He played opposite Ida Lupino. The film's success also led to a breakthrough for Huston, giving him the leverage needed to transition from screenwriter to director, setting Bogart up for Huston's next project: an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. The Maltese Falcon was Huston's directorial debut. Although a pre-code version of the film had been made ten years earlier, the 1941 version with Bogart starring as private detective Sam Spade was considered an instant classic film noir. Complementing Bogart were co-stars Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Mary Astor, and Elisha Cook Jr. Bogart's sharp timing and facial expressions were praised as vital to the film's quick action and hard-boiled dialogue. It was a commercial hit, and Bogart was unusually happy with the film. He later said, "It's practically a masterpiece. I don't have many things I'm proud of, but that's one." The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including best picture and best direction. Bogart reprised his role on the July 3rd, 1946 episode of Academy Award Theater.

Hey Everyone! It's Bridget Marquardt here with a brand new episode of Ghost Magnet! Todays guest is Janice Oberding. Janice Oberding as seen on History Channel, Travel Channel, Syfy Channel, Discovery+, Living TV, Fox Family; she was instrumental in getting two/four productions (Great Britain) to come to Nevada to film several episodes of the TV series Dead Famous with Gail Porter and Chris Fleming. Recently she was interviewed about Virginia City ghosts and history for the YouTube channel show Sam and Colby. The 2004 premier print issue of Ghost Magazine named Janice as one of three pioneer icons in the paranormal field, along with Hans Holzer and Peter James.  She is thankful to be around to still boast about that. I know I say this every week but I am truly sooo excited to hear all of Janice's stories about so many places that are close to home for me and some that I have great interest in. All that plus Lisa Morton's Ghost Report, this week on Ghost Magnet with Bridget.   #HauntedVirginiaCity #HauntedLakeTahoe #HauntedReno #Tonapah #Goldfield #Ghosts #Haunted #GirlsNextLevel
