In this episode of Rising Voices of Fundraising: The Emerging Leaders Podcast, our 2025 Outstanding Young Professional award recipients share the strategies that led to amazing fundraising results, as well as the personal career moves they've made that have set them up for success. Their advice serves as a blueprint for emerging leaders unsure of how to take their career to the next level.   Abby and Brian will be honored at AFP ICON 2025 in Seattle, April 27-29.  Guests: Brian Marquez, development officer at the Southern Scholarship Foundation: Starting as a development coordinator at Elder Care Services (ECS) in Tallahassee, Brian introduced initiatives such as a quarterly impact report that highlighted to donors the valuable role their contributions played in creating positive change at the senior service agency. These stewardship-focused efforts resulted in increased donor retention, including inspiring one donor to triple their gift from the previous year. As a queer Latino, Brian's leadership at ECS extended beyond fundraising. While chair of ECS's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, Brian launched an effort to translate materials into Spanish, and secured SAGE certification for ECS, ensuring the organization was a welcoming and affirming space for LGBTQ+ seniors. While the industry as a whole continues to struggle to retain and recruit new donors, Brian is defying trends with a focus on meaningful donor engagement that has contributed to a 5% increase in retention, a 7% increase in first-time donors, and a 17% increase in monthly donors. His use of automated, segmented campaigns celebrating donor milestones and personalized welcome campaigns for new donors reflect Brian's ability to embrace new technology in fostering relationships. Beyond his professional achievements, Brian has made a profound impact as a volunteer and advocate. As president of the AFP FL, Big Bend Chapter, he has significantly increased attendance and engagement by fostering collaborations with local nonprofit leaders. Additionally, he is deeply committed to advancing LGBTQ+ equality, serving on the board of Equality Florida and contributing to policy initiatives through the City of Tallahassee Mayor's LGBTQ+ Advisory Council. Abby Trahan, MPA, CFRE, development officer II, at the University of Houston: In her first professional role as annual giving coordinator for the Houston Food Bank, Abby grew the monthly giving program by 60%, generating $3 million in dependable annual revenue with a remarkable 96% donor retention rate. Beyond the numbers, she created a culture of gratitude and stewardship through innovations such as a new tool for tracking donor touchpoints and a cross-departmental letter writing day to personally thank donors. In her successive roles as development officer I and II for the University of Houston, Abby has significantly expanded the organization's capacity to attract and retain major donors, resulting in multiple six-figure gifts, including a $1 million commitment, as well as the University of Houston Law Center's first endowed professorship during the current dean's tenure. Her talents extend beyond major gifts, also facilitating a peer-to-peer campaign that raised $113,000—the highest in four years. As an active member of AFP since 2018, Abby has demonstrated her leadership at the chapter level, serving as communications chair for National Philanthropy Day and mentoring emerging professionals through the Greater Houston Chapter's Collegiate Chapters program. Abby also earned her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential just three years after joining the profession, showcasing her commitment to her future career in fundraising. He discussed the importance of community involvement and the role Rotary plays in fostering connections among diverse individuals who share a commitment to making a positive impact. Brett elaborated on Rotary's seven areas of focus, which include promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies, and protecting the environment. He emphasized that these efforts contribute to creating peace in our communities and beyond. We also explored how Rotary is evolving to be more inclusive and accessible, breaking down barriers to membership and adapting meeting formats to fit the needs of modern members. Brett encouraged listeners to find their local Rotary club, emphasizing that everyone is welcome and that there are various ways to engage with the organization. Towards the end of our conversation, we discussed the upcoming District Conference in April, where members will gather to learn, share, and celebrate the impactful work being done across the district. In this episode of Rising Voices of Fundraising: The AFP Emerging Leaders Podcast, we discuss the difficult questions we ask ourselves when we're contemplating leaving a job: Can I get a bump in salary at my current organization? What am I really looking for out of a job change? Do I have the right skills to apply to a new position? How do I balance pursuing my passion with setting appropriate work/life boundaries? Derek Mulhern, CEO & executive leadership coach at Derek Mulhern Coaching & Consulting, shares how to evaluate the pros and cons and make the career move that's right for you. Mary Ann Faremouth is joined today by Eric Liu, a past District Governor of Rotary International, a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe. The organization believes in the shared responsibility of individuals to take action in addressing the world's most persistent issues by promoting peace, providing clean water, fighting disease, supporting education, and more. Eric Liu's journey with Rotary began at the age of 41, when he had established his career and was looking to give back to the community. Eric found Rotary's non-religious, nonpolitical approach to be the perfect platform for his philanthropic aspirations. Eric explains, "Because we're international, we're able to go into any country doing good work to help people. And because we're nonpolitical, many countries will let Rotary get in to do work." Rotary doesn't just make a difference in the world. It makes a difference in the lives of its members. With the divisions in the world today, Rotary brings people together in a way that transcends generation, class, and culture, and gives them the opportunity to become better leaders, communicators, and team players. Members connect around shared values, providing opportunities that go beyond their work in Rotary, including networking among employers and job-seekers. “The people I've met in this organization are top notch, wonderful, wonderful people,” Eric says. If you're interested in joining Rotary, visit their website at Rotary.org. “Every club has slightly different culture, and you can find one that matches you,” Eric says. The global directory of clubs on the website caters to many different schedules, lifestyles, and commitments. Additionally, for those who prefer a more tailored approach, you can email Rotary directly for a more customized match. Devin: Peter, what is your superpower?Peter: My superpower is caring and doing humanitarian efforts most of my life.Devin: John, what's your superpower?John: I grew up in a very large family, and the concept of getting along with people comes into play because, you know, you got to love brothers and sisters. When Peter Teahen started thinking about this round-the-world trip, his wife was supportive but didn't expect him to pull it off. After a year, when he announced his plan to actually go, she insisted he find a co-pilot. Luckily, marriage had connected the pair to a cousin who was also a pilot, John Ockenfels.John, with over three decades in Rotary, was excited to make the trip and, after a few weeks of contemplation–and discussion with his wife–agreed to the journey and brought the fight to end polio to the flight. That, it turns out, was just the beginning of their challenges.“This was the trip that couldn't be done, that shouldn't be done, that nobody in their right mind was going to do. But somehow, we managed to pull that off,” John says.Planned for 2020, the pair had their trip canceled by covid. Rescheduled for 2021, covid's relentlessness canceled the second effort. A third effort, in 2022, was blocked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The duo had planned to take an established northern route that included stops in Russia. US-Russia tension after the attack resulted in revoked invitations. Almost anyone else would have given up at this point. The primary alternative, a southern route, would require 15 and 17-hour-long hops over the Pacific, which their plane couldn't handle.Undeterred, the pilots just bought a plane that could make the trip! They left on May 5th and returned on July 31st. Over the years of preparation and during the flight, the duo raised millions for polio, counting the $2 for $1 match provided by the Gates Foundation.“We believe we had just raised our first million dollars before our departure. Since then, we're pretty sure that we've got at least another half a million that we've raised along the route. So that's going to be a pretty good check to the Rotary Foundation,” John says.Rotary leads the global effort, now funded primarily by the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control.John explained the history from his perspective, “I joined Rotary in 1986. They had just gotten on board with this polio elimination program. At that point, three-fourths of the world was endemic with polio. We watched these charts go from red to green as polio around the world went away.”Today, polio is endemic only in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A 2022 visitor from Pakistan was contagious, and the first case of polio in the US in decades was recorded.Peter explains the growing vulnerability around the world, including in rich countries:In today's environment, where there's a decline in people vaccinating, especially post-covid, a lot of people have just dismissed vaccinations. The vaccination rate in the world is at the lowest it's been for years. That sets up trouble for children and families whose children will be exposed to the polio virus. Studies show that if we don't eliminate polio soon, in the next ten years, we'll see 200,000 new cases of polio. It's time to stop. It's time to get across the finish line.Completing the journey and raising so much money to end polio required the pilots to use their superpowers, Peter's caring and John's getting along with people.AI Episode Summary* Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels completed a round-the-world trip in their Cessna airplane to raise money and awareness for the fight to end polio.* Peter had the dream to fly his plane around the world and started planning in 2018.* He approached John, who initially hesitated but eventually joined the trip.* Their original route was canceled three times due to Covid and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so they had to plan a new southern route.* The route included stops in Newfoundland, Iceland, Europe, Crete, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur, Surabaya, Darwin, Canes, Brisbane, Pango Pango, Hawaii, Maui, and Oakland.* The trip was challenging, and they faced risks and limited communication, but they successfully completed the journey.* Their goal was to raise money for the fight against polio, as there are still cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan.* They raised over a million dollars before their departure and believe they raised another half million along the route.* They emphasized the importance of polio eradication and the need for continued vaccinations and funding.* Their trip was a spiritual journey, and they were inspired by the support and dedication they witnessed in communities affected by polio. How to Develop Caring As a SuperpowerPeter shared his feelings about the trip, which included time volunteering directly to give oral polio vaccines to children:For me, this trip around the world became a spiritual journey. It was so true, especially when we were working in the ghettos in the poorest part of Karachi in Pakistan, holding babies in our arms and giving them the vaccine, talking to the parents, talking to the caregivers who are there. It moved me to tears. In Afghanistan, a lot of the resistance came from the fathers of the children who would prohibit the vaccinations. John and I witnessed in the ghettos of Karachi, where the fathers came out of their homes with their babies in their arms, and they presented their children for the polio [vaccine] drops. That brought tears to my eyes. I'm thinking that is the power of humanity when in one country, people would be killed for giving drops to their children and through education and creating an environment where they felt safe, the men presented their children for the drops.By following his example of caring, you strengthen your ability to care, potentially helping to create a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. How to Develop Getting Along With People As a SuperpowerJohn grew up in a large family and learned a lot of lessons there. He shared a notable insight:Being in that large family, we didn't really have a lot of money. We had to make do. But we also found out that we got a lot of help from other people.I found out that returning that help, giving that help back and working in other entities, Rotary or Jaycees or whatever the organization is–many other organizations I've been working in–I enjoy that aspect of it. Even today, now that I'm retired, my wife and I still spend many, many hours every week and every year in particular, doing things for other organizations for which we get no funding or no pay. And we're okay with that.John has worked his entire career with his four brothers in the family business. He shared the advice he often gives to help people learn to get along. “There are differences for everybody and everything. Play to those differences. Work with those differences, and you can make a difference.”By following his example and advice, you can emulate John's ability to get along with others, serve in your community and make it a strength that can enable you to do even more good in the world.Superpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. Some people do so much good work for others, you have to wonder how they find the time, volunteering just comes so easy. Then some people take it to a whole new level! Tina Fischlin is definitely one of those rare people who do so much and still make it look easy! We are going to talk about a couple of the organizations she is an integral part of today: Alliance for Smiles & Rotary International. Tina grew up in Reidsville, GA, which is right in the middle of Vidalia onion country! Her parents owned property at Lake Sinclair, so the family spent a lot of time in the area. Loving the lake area, she and her husband bought property here in the early 90's and built their first home in 1995, just before the Atlanta Olympics in 96. She has lived here full, or part time, ever since. Having a long-term perspective, she gives us some fun insight into what it was like here BEFORE all the growth occurred. Tina serves on the Board of Alliance for Smiles, an incredible organization that provides hope and a new life for people, a lot of them children, born with a cleft lip or pallet. She is in the trenches, leading missions all over the world! She'll tell us about what they do, the challenges they face and the enormous rewards from performing these operations. And she'll give us a couple of real life stories that will touch your heart! We will also talk about Rotary, from an international perspective, with over 1.4 million members worldwide, continually serving in nearly every country, as well as from a local level, and the work that happens right here in the Lake Area. Even though you are probably aware of Rotary, you may not know the extent of the work that they do, locally and around the world. This amazing organization led the effort for decades to eradicate polio, which for the most part, has been accomplished. At the same time, locally Rotary makes an impact assisting the community with everything from helping to feed local people to building handicap ramps for someone who may not otherwise have that option. Tina has served Rotary locally for many years, including President, but also at the District Level, serving as District Governor! Tina is a “get it done” person and if you need something done, you want her on your team! Dr Sabaratnam Prathapan was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. At the age of 19 he left for the UK and completed an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Brighton. He worked for four years as an engineer in the UK before relocating to Singapore where he took up a position lecturing at an institute of higher education. During this period he saw a position advertised at the then Darwin Community College. He applied for the job but thought nothing further about it. Around six months later, he received a telegram inviting him to attend an interview in Darwin. He didn't know where Darwin was but he had a sister in Sydney, so he thought he would go for the interview and then go to Sydney to see his sister. He attended the interview in a suit and tie as was customary in England. His three interviewers were in shorts! Prath went onto Sydney and whilst there received the offer of employment from Darwin Community College. It was 1977. Prath has devoted 44 years of his life to what is now Charles Darwin University. He became Deputy Vice Chancellor but never gave up teaching. But it is not just in academics that Prath has made a contribution to the Territory. He was President of the Australian Institute of Engineers (NT), President of the Rotary Club (NT) and President of the Hindu Society. He was instrumental in building the Hindu temple and Harmony Hall in Malak, a northern suburb of Darwin. Now in semi-retirement Prath has been nominated District Governor of the Rotary Club, Northern Division, which takes in Central and North Queensland, as well as the Top End and East Timor. He has been married for 44 years and has two sons, both of who have established careers in the foreign service and accounting respectively. Christina talks about many of her travel memories all over the world with friends and later on with her family. She is an amazing organiser whether it's for a family trip to Greece, a huge conference in Cyprus or bringing the President of Rotary International, Ian Riseley to Beirut during her year as the first female District Governor of District 2452 and arranging that the conference is held under the patronage and participation of the President of the Lebanese Republic General Michel Aoun. She is a very dedicated Rotarian ever since she was a young woman, following in the footsteps of her father. She is the founder and President of the first Rotaract Club in Limassol (Amathusia) and a charter member of the Rotary Club Limassol Berengaria Cosmopolitan. Most of all, she is a wonderful travel companion, a friend and when I am at my wit's end, I call Christina. Our kids have grown up together and attended the same school, we have shared many meals which we cooked together and many inspiring and supportive conversations over coffee. I look forward to new adventures and to another interview in 10 years. https://thesoulkit.com/

Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Noelle Turner, born in the states and living for 45 years in Germany talks about cultural differences: “In the beginning, it was a difference, and there are still things that bother me, there are many. It's just little funny things that they don't sometimes keep a physical distance, like they walk past you and maybe bump into you and don't notice it. It's just how their culture is. You know, for us that would be considered rude. Or like, if you're talking to one of your friends, or something and they'll say something like ‘You look really terrible today!' For me, that's an insult. And Germans do that in a way to show they care. But it still bothers me, you know, ‘You look really tired.' And sometimes you feel great, and it makes you feel like ‘Oh, is there something wrong with me today?' I would never think of telling somebody that they didn't look good that day. But for them it's a way of showing that they're interested in you and that they care about you. But I still get insulted when people say that.”In this episode, Noelle shares how winning a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship from Rotary in 1975 while finishing her master's degree at Indiana University in Bloomington opened the door for her to study opera in Germany and learn the German language. She talks about earning the opportunity to stay in then West Germany led to a career as an opera singer. She notes it was her love of musical theater growing up near New York that she developed in high school that enabled her to become the first musical theater professor in Germany because there was no one in Germany with comparable musical theater knowledge and experience as she had acquired from watching a Broadway show every Saturday. She recalls how touched she was when invited to join Rotary 15 years ago because this gave her a way to thank Rotary for the scholarship. She shares the discomfort she felt being the first female member of her club for a full year, a club that included 80 men. She notes she was offered the privilege to serve as club President 5 years later. She notes how serving as club President was a way to thank Rotary for the scholarship. She recounts seizing the opportunity to return to Bloomington, Indiana, in March 2013 to express her gratitude to the Bloomington Rotary club for the scholarship she received in 1975 during her term as President of the Rotary club in Essen, Germany. She recounts being asked by the female District Governor to help start a Rotary Passport club, a club that meets only virtually. She shares with pride that she will become club President on July 1st. While Noelle shares that she retired from her professor position at the Fulkwang University of the Arts five years ago, she feels busy and blessed by opportunities to teach masterclasses and workshops all over Europe in addition to providing private lessons. To connect with Noelle, she recommends reaching out to her by email: noelleturner@me.com. For those interested in exploring learning from Noelle, she invites you to contact her by email and Noelle will set up a Zoom meeting to have a chat. She invites you to accept this benevolent Call-to-Action from this quote by Henry David Thoreau “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” Noelle invites you to accept others the way they and stay true to your calling. Hosted on Acast.
