Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we're diving whiskers-first into the utterly bonkers, wildly inventive indie oddity that is Hundreds of Beavers — a film that may be about trapping furry woodland critters but ends up capturing something much rarer: pure, anarchic cinematic joy.Directed by Mike Cheslik and starring frequent collaborator Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, Hundreds of Beavers is a near-silent, black-and-white slapstick adventure set in a surreal 19th-century frontier. It follows a hapless, hard-drinking applejack salesman (Tews) who finds himself stranded in a snowy wilderness and must learn the ways of the wild—specifically how to trap beavers—in order to survive, thrive, and maybe even win the heart of a fur trader's daughter. What makes this film stand out isn't just its lo-fi commitment to absurdity—it's the hand-crafted world of practical effects, person-in-costume beavers, and cartoon physics that turn it into a live-action Looney Tunes episode by way of Buster Keaton.

Con estos mimbres, revisamos el gran clásico autobiográfico del director nacido en Reino Unido, que se hizo acompañar de Buster Keaton para esta historia de un payaso venido a menos (y que se estrenó en España hace justo 70 años). In the aftermath of World War II, Chaplin was criticized for being politically liberal and internationalist in outlook. He had never become a US citizen, something that would be held against him as xenophobia set in when the postwar Red Scare took hold. Politics aside, Chaplin had another problem: his sexual interest in young women. He had been married three times and had had numerous affairs. In the 1940s, he was the subject of a paternity suit, which he lost, despite blood tests that proved he was not the father. His sexuality became a convenient way for those who opposed his politics to condemn him. Refused permission to return to the US after a trip abroad, he settled in Switzerland and made his last two films in London. In Charlie Chaplin vs. America, Scott Eyman explores the life and times of the movie genius who brought us such masterpieces as City Lights and Modern Times. “One of the finest surveys of the man and the artist ever written” (Leonard Maltin) this book is “a sobering account of cancel culture in action.” (The Economist) 1921 CHAPLIN FAIRBANKS PICKFORD

Right here, squaring off, from opposite sides of the Atlantic, we present: Dueling tag-teams of zaniness — wearing fanciful disguises, winking at traditional forms, and tweeting in a birdlike falsetto… Good stuff!BEDAZZLEDThe Faustian satire Bedazzled, created by genius comedian Peter Cook (who plays the Devil trying to bargain for souls), makes good use of the talents of his Chaplin-esque comedy partner, Dudley Moore (who you might remember from the hit films Ten and Arthur), who plays the shlumpy Wimpy Burger cook, Stanley, willing to bargain away his mortal soul for love. The team first worked together in the early 60s smash stage revue BEYOND THE FRINGE, then coalesced on the BBC as Pete and Dud, (and, later, even more darlingly in the scatalogical bootleg recordings of Derek and Clive). In 1966, with Bedazzled they were on the rise commercially, and Moore, an Oxford trained classical and jazz pianist, wrote all the music for the film.  In this cut, entitled Leaping Nuns chorus, the sisters of the Order of Saint Beryl (including Stanley in full habit) show their devotion to the Saint by jumping on trampolines. JAN AND DEAN MEET BATMANAlso in ‘66, laboring secretly on a similar track, energized by the same Goon Show type inspiration, Jan Berry and Dean Torrance were working to expand, (but not abandon) their surf sound by adding a storyline and special effects, and creating some nutty theater of the mind. Who knows where this might have led, if Jan's tragic car collision a few week's after the record's release, (resulting in his massive head injuries), hadn't sidelined the team's ambitions? Perhaps a blockbuster TV series…?There was always a comic element to the Jan and Dean performance style. (Check out the classic Rock concert film Tami Show, which they hosted). They may have looked like copper toned surf hunks, but maybe there was some Abbott and Costello lurking beneath the Golden Boy surface.

Vamos a averiguarlo. So what's the most revolutionary invention in the history of the American Republic? The internet, maybe? Or the electric bulb or the motor car? Perhaps. But according to the Harvard historian Joyce Chaplin, it might be the Franklin Stove, Benjamin Franklin's innovation which she claims in an eponymous new book, represents an unintentional American revolution. What's really important about the Franklin Stove, she explains, is that it democratized heating, thereby enabling ordinary Americans to survive the “Little Ice Age” of the late 18th century. In an 21st century America where research into global warming is now under threat, Chaplin's intriguing The Franklin Stove is a convincing argument for the popular benefits of environmental science. Here the 5 Keen On America takeaways in our conversation with Joyce Chaplin* Franklin as a climate scientist: Chaplin reveals how Benjamin Franklin's work with his stove led him to understand atmospheric convection, which he then applied to explain larger climate systems like storm movements and the Gulf Stream. He essentially became an early climate scientist through his practical inventions.* The Little Ice Age context: Franklin invented his stove during the Little Ice Age (1300-1850), particularly in response to the severe winter of 1740-41. Unlike today's climate crisis, there was virtually no "denialism" about climate change during this period - people openly discussed and sought solutions to the cooling climate.* Franklin's environmental legacy: While Franklin initially created his stove to conserve wood and trees in Pennsylvania, his later models burned coal. This shift toward fossil fuels contributed to what Chaplin calls "an unintended industrial revolution" that ultimately led to our current climate warming crisis.* Franklin's political evolution: Though a monarchist for most of his life, Franklin underwent a radical transformation later in life, becoming head of Pennsylvania's abolition society after having previously owned enslaved people. This challenges the notion that historical figures were simply "products of their time."* Franklin's complex character: Chaplin, who has written extensively on Benjamin Franklin, portrays him as a self-cultivating narcissist who carefully crafted his public image and desperately sought fame from a young age. However, she acknowledges his genuine accomplishments and contributions to science and society, creating a more nuanced view of the founding father.Joyce E. Chaplin is the James Duncan Phillips Professor of Early American History at Harvard University, where she also holds affiliations with the Graduate School of Design and Center for the Environment. She is the author of The First Scientific American: Benjamin Franklin and the Pursuit of Genius, among other books, and her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and the London Review of Books. Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are graced by the enthusiastic presence of Tony-nominated actor Rob McClure to finish off their episode cycle on Oscar-Winning Supporting Performances with a "Close-Up" about three classic comedic roles, which each garnered their performers the coveted trophies. The first of these would be Kevin Kline's role in "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988), the British-American, Monty Python-adjacent caper where Kline plays the audaciously stubborn diamond thief Otto West. Next is that of Jack Palance in "City Slickers" (1991), the story of three New Yorkers on a cattle-herding vacation in the American West, in which Palance plays their rugged-yet-warm-hearted trail boss, Curly. And rounding out this trio is Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny," the courtroom dramedy where the titular Brooklyn lawyer is enlisted to represent his wrongfully-accused cousin and best friend in Alabama, depending on crucial contributions from his brash and mechanically-astute fiancée Mona Lisa Vito to work towards their exoneration. Though all of these films were released in nearby years, the group discusses why these performances stand the test of time, be it due to laugh-out-loud physical gags, the contrast between locals and fish-out-of-water, or the resonant truths at each role's foundation. Aided by Rob McClure's inimitable experience and expert insight about the "actually, actually" that defines a great comic performance, they trace the vast range of humor among these characters and the greater stories in which they appear, making notable stops along the way at unforgettable facial expressions, one-armed push-ups, and scathing instruction-manual retorts. Rob McClure has earned Tony nominations for his roles in the Broadway productions of Mrs. Doubtfire and Chaplin, and has also appeared in Something Rotten!, Mary Poppins, Hello Dolly, Beetlejuice, and many more productions On- and Off-Broadway. An unexpected topic of conversation I've consistently had over the last couple years when coaching members of my community Web Designer Pro privately is around managing ADHD and running a web design business. When thinking about ADHD, I'm probably not alone in immediately jumping to the visual of the wild 7 year old kid who can't sit down in class. But since the conversation around this has become more prevalent for me both personally in my coaching DM's and in the web design community at large via other forums or groups I check into, I wanted to dig into what this looks like practically for adults running a web design business.Since this is a sensitive topic, I wanted to chat with someone who I could level with and learn from versus being educated from an “ADHD Coach” per say. That's why I'm dang pumped about sharing my recent convo with my old friend (literally, we were doubles tennis partners in High School) Rob Chaplin. Rob and I reconnected a couple years back when he was considering jumping into a creative field like web design. Since then, he's been through all my courses, built up his freelance business and became a member of my community Web Designer pro.But in 2024, he let me know that he hit a wall…feeling disorganized, down, scattered and disoriented about how to move forward in business and in life. Now, many of these feelings are natural when you start a business, do something new or take on the common stresses of building something – but for Rob, it was more. After some self-research, he dipped his toe into pursuing ADHD treatment, most of which are behavioral and habitual and I have to say, I've seen a noticeable difference with his output and his overall energy and state. For all those reasons and more, I wanted to have an open chat about HIS experience and journey managing ADHD as a web designer and because he's so new in the journey and he's really passionate about sharing what's working for him.We dig into:The red flags that led him to research ADHDHow he started small and began making better progress in becoming more focused and productiveWhat tips, tricks and strategies he uses to help his ADHD (daily) nowHow creative fields like web design are actually ideal for folks on any spectrum of the ADHD scaleHow ADHD can actually be used in a very positive way with boundaries and constraintsAgain, this is purely an explorative chat for me to learn more about this world without judgement or preconceived notions.Disclaimer: Rob shares HIS journey, methods, strategies and medications that work for him but this is not medical advice or recommendation. In episode 474 astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best discuss Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler as time twins who were born a few days apart both with Venus retrograde, and how subsequent Venus retrogrades coincided with important turning points in both of their lives. Hitler and Chaplin were born in April of 1889 only 4 days apart, and so their birth charts are remarkably similar, including both having Venus retrograde in Taurus. The issue of time twins or people who are born around the same time with similar charts is usually brought up as a criticism against astrology, since clearly two people born around the same time can have different destinies, but in this episode we demonstrate how two people born near in time can end up having important turning points happen in their lives at the same time due to shared transits. One example is how during the Venus retrograde in 1913 both men ended up moving to the place they would become famous, with Chaplin moving to Hollywood at this time, and Hitler moving to Germany. While their destinies were different, their timelines would often overlap in striking ways. This was originally a piece of a larger investigation into Venus retrogrades in Aries that we decided to break off into its own episode, in order to be able to really tell both of their stories in full, and demonstrate how important turning points in their lives tended to happen during the time of these Venus retrograde periods. Because our focus was primarily on the Venus retrograde periods we did not reflect on the broader issue of time twins as much as we could have, and so this is instead more of an initial introduction to astrologers can address the issue of time twins from a practical, conceptual, and philosophical standpoint.
