Described as "America's Dyatlov Pass Incident," the disappearance of five young men has baffled the world for decades. When their vehicle is found abandoned on a rough mountain road, authorities are suddenly filled with more questions than answers. Why did the group of men drive the wrong direction from home and end up on the side of a mountain? Why did they leave the safety of the vehicle to head out, presumably on foot, completely unprepared and underdressed, into the snow? Where did they go? When signs of the men start being discovered, the questions only intensify. Here we are, over 40 years later, still asking.....what happened to the Yuba County Five? This is our final film review of the season, and we are literally going out guns blazing! We close Season 6 with a profile of Francis Galluppi's The Last Stop in Yuma County. Though this film is a blend of neo-noir styles and the western genre, it is not to be confused with the western 3:10 to Yuma or the poorly reviewed Tate Taylor film Breaking News in Yuba County. No, it's The Last Stop in Yuma County, and it's our last stop of the season. Tony Wright - Things Aren't Right - The Disappearance of the Yuba County FiveMarch 18Tony Wright joins Ed Opperman to talk about the facts and the fictions behind the now legendary case of the Yuba County Five. He's the author of two comic books and a graphic novel with Source Point Press. Tony is an archivist, father, husband, and a lost soul of rock and roll. When he is not writing, he is spending time with his family or enjoying a good meal. Tony has been featured as a Yuba County Five case expert on the Mopac Audio podcast Yuba County Five and was also featured as a case expert on the Motor Trend TV show Auto/Biography: Cold Case. The book explores the bizarre and tragic 1978 disappearance of Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home.Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. One witness came forward with an incredible story of seeing the men disappear into the forest that night. Yet every lead came to a dead end. About four months after they vanished, four of the five men's remains were found some 12 miles from the car, with one discovered in a US Forest Service trailer with plenty of food and fuel to keep them alive for months.Once described as ‘Bizarre as hell', the case of the Yuba County Five has baffled law enforcement and the families of the missing men for over 45 years. Tony Wright has meticulously researched this case, earning himself the reputation of being one of the foremost authorities on the subject, and his conclusions are likely as close as anyone will come to making sense of this tragedy.BookBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Come along for the strange tale of 5 men who disappeared mysteriously. All of our wonderful links can be found here on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts The Yuba County 5 case is a mysterious and tragic event that occurred in February 1978, involving five young men from Yuba City, California. The men—Jack Madruga, Jackie Huett, Ted Weiher, Bill Sterling, and Gary Mathias—went missing after a basketball game, and their disappearance has puzzled investigators for decades due to its strange and inexplicable circumstances. Here's a detailed breakdown of the case: The Disappearance On February 24, 1978, the five men attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico. After the game, they stopped at a convenience store to buy snacks and drinks. This was the last confirmed sighting of the group together. The Search and Discovery For months, there was no trace of the men, despite extensive search efforts. However, on June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists discovered a car belonging to Jack Madruga in a remote area of Plumas National Forest, nearly 70 miles from Chico and far off their expected route home. The car was stuck in the snow, but it was in working order, and it appeared that the men had left it voluntarily. The Bodies Ted Weiher's Body: On June 4, 1978, Ted Weiher's body was found in a deserted Forest Service trailer 19.4 miles from the car. He had died of exposure and starvation, despite there being canned food in the trailer. His feet were badly frostbitten, and he had lost nearly half his body weight. Other Bodies: Over the next few days, the remains of Jackie Huett and Bill Sterling were found not far from the trailer, and their bodies also indicated that they had succumbed to the elements. Jack Madruga's body was found between the trailer and the car, indicating he likely died trying to reach help. Gary Mathias's remains have never been found, although his shoes were discovered in the trailer, suggesting he might have also died nearby or moved to another location. The Mysteries Several perplexing elements make the Yuba County 5 case particularly mysterious: The Location: The area where the car and bodies were found was remote, rugged, and not on the men's planned route. It's unclear why they would have driven there. Condition of the Car: The car was found abandoned with fuel in the tank, and there was no apparent mechanical failure. It appeared to have been abandoned because it was stuck in snow, yet it was not clear why the men did not try to walk back to civilization. Survival Choices: Despite having access to food and heating materials in the trailer, Weiher did not use them effectively, leading to speculation about his state of mind or possible coercion. Gary Mathias: Mathias had a history of mental health issues and was on medication, but his fate remains unknown. His absence and the lack of concrete clues about his whereabouts add to the mystery. Theories Various theories have been proposed over the years: Disorientation and Panic: Some suggest that the men became lost and panicked in the snow, leading them to abandon the car and seek shelter in the trailer. Foul Play: There are suspicions of foul play or external intervention that led them to the remote area and resulted in their deaths. Psychological Factors: Considering Mathias's mental health issues, there is speculation that a psychological crisis might have influenced their decisions and behaviors. Conclusion The Yuba County 5 case remains one of the most baffling and tragic unsolved mysteries. Despite numerous investigations and public interest, the exact circumstances that led to the men's disappearance and deaths are still unknown, leaving many questions unanswered.

It was supposed be the most exciting weekend for five friends as they prepared for the biggest game in their basketball careers. Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias were to play in a tournament that would enable them to travel to Los Angeles courtesy of the Special Olympics. They'd planned to watch their favourite college team first though, to inspire them for the following day. On Friday, February 24, 1978, five friends left the Yuba County, California area in Jack Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home.

On Friday, February 24th, 1978, five young men left their homes to head to a basketball game at Chico State in Chico, California. This was the boys' favorite team and they had a basketball tournament they were playing in themselves the next day. They were known as the Gateway Gators and were competing in the Special Olympics. The game ended and the boys' favorite team won. They left the school and stopped at a nearby service station to grab snacks before the hour drive home together. Unfortunately, the young men never made it home. Months later, remains were found in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest. The young men, rather than continue south down the interstate, in a straight shot to their hometown, had veered east and continued in the wrong direction for quite some distance. Their car was found abandoned. Four of the young men were found dead. People assumed that because four of the young men were described as “slow” or mentally disabled, they'd just gotten lost, but their families knew better. They still, to this day, believe that the young men were victims of foul play. With one man still missing, there are no answers to this case, only theories and rumors. What happened to the Yuba County Five? TRIGGER WARNINGS: outdated terminology for intellectually and developmentally disabled, that can be considered offensive now (these words were used to describe the men at the time when it was more acceptable). [Content Warning: This episode contains references to suicide, mental illness, and sexual assault. Listener discretion advised.] And…we're back for an extra helping of conversation with investigative journalist Jennings Brown. If Part One's exploration of creepy AF Youtube spiritual guru Teal Swan didn't freak you out enough, there's more Teal talk for you in this episode. Be sure to watch The Deep End docuseries and binge The Gateway podcast to learn more about how each new layer of the Teal Tribe onion seems to be stankier than the last.. We recommend not listening or watching before bed, unless you really dig nightmares.Despite what Teal may think: She isn't the center of the universe. She's not even the center of the cultiverse. So we also use part 2 of our chat with Jennings to ramble from the dark corners of Utah's Swan country to sunny Yuba County, California where the organization at the center of his Revelations podcast appears to be hard at work making fine wine and disturbing cult headlines. The Fellowship of Friends has some serious issues, and we're still unpacking it all. Doomsday and rosé anyone? "The tormenter called the Gillispies' home phone. When Ron picked up, the caller declared he was observing the Gillispie house . Ron, furious, hung up and raced out the door with the intention of confronting him. Within minutes, he was speeding away in his truck. And he'd brought along a gun. And then a few hours later, Ron Gillispie was found dead behind the wheel."Dan has two out of the ordinary tales this week. He first shares with us the story of the Circleville Letters. A bizarre occurrence of random people who are all connected in some way, receiving letters from an anonymous sender. Much like The Watcher, we don't really know what's going on. Is it paranormal or just some creep, trying to wreak havoc? Next up, five young men disappeared in north central California after attending a college basketball game, and why they went to where some of their remains would later be found is still a mystery. Crazy twist at the end of that story that makes it real, real creepy. Lynze has some great stories for us too! Three sisters all see and hear something in their home. Could it be their imaginations or are they really seeing this? Lastly, a fun and spoopy look at an old parlour game called "Up, Table Up."Standup: Also - if you want to see a very different side of Dan than you see here, his Symphony of Insanity standup tour is back and running.
