In February of 1978, five young men from Yuba County, California, disappeared one night after a trip to see a basketball game. Each of the men lived with their families and had varying degrees of learning, intellectual, and mental health disabilities. When their car is found, answers only lead to further questions. My guest for this episode is author and researcher Tony Wright, who joined me to talk about his recent book Things Aren't Right: The Disappearance of the Yuba County Five. The book explores the strange and tragic 1978 disappearance of five friends in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California; Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some seventy-five miles in the wrong direction from home. Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. One witness came forward with an incredible story of seeing the men disappear into the forest that night. Yet every lead came to a dead end. About four months after they vanished, four of the five men's remains were found some twelve miles from the car, with one discovered in a US Forest Service trailer with plenty of food and fuel to keep them alive for months. Once described as ‘Bizarre as hell', the case of the Yuba County Five has baffled law enforcement and the families of the missing men for over forty-five years. Tony's meticulous research has rightly earned him the reputation of being one of the foremost authorities on the subject, and his conclusions are likely as close as anyone will come to making sense of what happened to Ted, Jack, Bill, Jackie and Gary. We also take a moment to comment on the murder of Renee Good and while we don't do a deep dive because it is political, we do make it clear that a) it was, in fact, a murder and b) we make it clear that it wasn't right and we are here for those listeners who may be lost, hurt or confused in these dark times. Then we dig into the Yuba County 5, a California cold case that ranks right up there with the Dyatlov Pass Incident for being unsolvable Maybe higher because a slab avalance seems the likely solution to that mystery...but there is no easy answer to the Yuba County 5. Why would five men drive miles out of their way into the Plumas County forest? Why would they get out of a car that had half a tank of gas, was mechanically sound, and not stuck. Why would they hike 19 miles to a forest service trailer where at least three men died along the way? Why was a fifth man discovered dead in a forest service trailer with several weeks growth of beard? Why did he die from exposure and malnutrition when the trailer had both food and heat? Why did he have another man's shoes with him what happened to the one man who was never found and who's gold watch was also found in the trailer? We ask all these questions but there aren't really any answers in this mysterious, historical, true crime deep dive into a cold case from all the way back in 1978. Tony Wright joins Ed Opperman to talk about the facts and the fictions behind the now legendary case of the Yuba County Five.He's the author of two comic books and a graphic novel with Source Point Press. Tony is an archivist, father, husband, and a lost soul of rock and roll. When he is not writing, he is spending time with his family or enjoying a good meal. Tony has been featured as a Yuba County Five case expert on the Mopac Audio podcast Yuba County Five and was also featured as a case expert on the Motor Trend TV show Auto/Biography: Cold Case.The book explores the bizarre and tragic 1978 disappearance of Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home.Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. One witness came forward with an incredible story of seeing the men disappear into the forest that night. Yet every lead came to a dead end. About four months after they vanished, four of the five men's remains were found some 12 miles from the car, with one discovered in a US Forest Service trailer with plenty of food and fuel to keep them alive for months.Once described as ‘Bizarre as hell', the case of the Yuba County Five has baffled law enforcement and the families of the missing men for over 45 years. On todays podcast discusses the 1978 disappearance of five mentally handicapped men from Yuba County, California, who went missing after a basketball game. They drove an hour in the wrong direction and ended up on a snowy mountain. Their vehicle was found with snacks and gas still intact. Bodies were found 11.5 and 16.6 miles away, indicating they died from the elements. The only survivor, Ted Weir, was found wrapped in blankets, suggesting he was cared for. Theories include panic, forced hitchhiking, or Gary Mathias's schizophrenia causing the incident. The case remains unsolved, with Mathias's body never found. The discussion centers on the mysterious disappearance of a group of boys who went missing on February 24, 1970, while checking the snow line. They were last seen at a convenience store on February 25 and 26. A convenience store clerk identified two members of the group, but their descriptions were inconsistent. The boys' bodies were found on February 28, four days later, in heavy snow. Theories include the boys being forced to drive up a mountain by an aggressive, possibly intoxicated man, or being abducted by aliens.
