In this episode hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh welcome Susan Leahy, the founder of Robert's Rules Made Simple. Susan has trained and advised thousands of board members, board chairs and others on how to master Robert's Rules of Order, to help lead and participate in productive meetings. Key Takeaways 1. History of Robert's Rules of Order Robert's Rules of Order is a decision making process developed in the 1800s by General Henry M. Robert, who was frustrated by disorganized meetings. Roberts created a guide, first published in 1876, which summarized and simplify parliamentary procedure to make understanding how to run an effective meeting accessible to everyone. It has, over the years, evolved into a detailed 700-page reference guide. 2. Susan's journey to Robert's Rules Leahy was first introduced to Robert's Rules when she and her mother enrolled into a local junior college course to learn about how to run an effective meeting. At that time, Leahy's mother served on an all-male city council board and found that during the meetings, discussions and decisions weren't clear. Understanding Robert's Rules gave her mother confidence in the meetings and she was able to find her voice and she was able to be of service “ and she was able to find her voice and she was able to be of service.” Susan began using Robert's Rules in high school and at college in connection with student government and became known for running effective meetings 3. The value of effective board meetings Robert's Rules of Order increases the likelihood that meetings will be productive. At its core, the Rules are about promoting clarity and action. By following the Seven Fundamental Motions of Robert's Rules meetings become more productive Robert's Rules is only used to handle the business of meetings, not the entire meeting. Once board members learn the basics, then the board's productivity increases exponentially. Robert's Rules are intended to provide everyone in the boardroom with a “common language” to help foster productive discussion and decision-making regarding the business of an organization. 4. The role of a parliamentarian in board meetings A parliamentarian is a resource for the chair, ensuring meetings stay on track. The chair ultimately makes the final decision but can consult with the parliamentarian whenever needed. Quotes ”When you are on a board, you're either handling information items or business items, and when it comes to the business of a board, everyone on that board needs to understand the decision making process they're using in order to be productive and drive action.” ”You do not need to be a parliamentarian to use Robert's Rules of Order. It is a reference guide there to support you in making business decisions. That's important because if people do not have a common understanding about how you're making business decisions, it's can create tension, mistrust, frustration - and it's going to waste a lot of time” ”What we do is put an emphasis on providing training that's going to make us more high functioning. How are we going to not just get it “right” how are we going to be healthy? And that's why I focus on healthy board dynamics and using Robert's Rules of Order as a tool to leverage a healthier dynamic on your board.” Links Robert's Rules Made Simple Guest Bio Susan Leahy, MA CSP, is a dynamic and highly engaging speaker, trainer, and facilitator specializing in board development, leadership, and effective meetings. As the founder of Robert's Rules Made Simple, established in 2004, Susan has empowered thousands of board members, board chairs, and support staff to master Robert's Rules of Order, transforming meetings into productive, efficient, and empowering experiences. A sought-after expert in communication, leadership, and group decision-making, Susan has worked with organizations of all sizes—from nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies and government entities. She is the creator of the acclaimed "Chair a Meeting with Confidence" program, designed to help board chairs lead with clarity, authority, and ease. With a Master's degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences from Bastyr University, Susan combines deep expertise with a refreshingly engaging approach. Her unique background—being raised by a professional clown and a career Marine—shapes her signature style: energetic, impactful, and highly memorable. She has a rare talent for making even the most complex or dry topics both accessible and engaging, leaving her audiences empowered and inspired.

When Kate Leahy was in Paris recently, I was happy to have a chat with her in my kitchen for my podcast. A former restaurant cook, Kate seamlessly pivoted to food writing, collaborating on books with a variety of chefs, bakers, and sommeliers, and has also penned several books on her own.Kate co-authored La Buvette with Camille Fourmont, the owner of the charming La Buvette wine bar in Paris, and most recently, My Egypt with chef-restaurateur Michael Mina. She also co-wrote Lavash, which explores the world of Armenian flatbreads; Cookie Love with Mindy Segal; Burma Superstar, featuring recipes from San Francisco's legendary Burmese restaurant; and A16 Food+Wine, from one of the best Italian restaurants in America. While Kate was in Paris working on a project with me, in between baking together and hitting the town, attending chocolate tastings, and checking out the $15 ham & cheese sandwich at the Ritz Hotel's Le Comptoir bakery (see below), we talked about writing cookbooks in this podcast. A lot goes into writing a cookbook, especially when she's collaborating with a chef and travels to places such as Egypt and Armenia to research and cull recipes. We discussed how she chooses what projects to work on, which chefs and sommeliers to work with, what are the most rewarding parts of writing cookbooks…and what are the most difficult. (And no, working with me wasn't one of the latter…hopefully!

This week Lara and Michael cover the new lawsuit brought by Palestinian-Americans and DAWN against the U.S. State Department under the Administrative Procedure Act seeking to oblige the U.S. government to comply with the Leahy law and cease military assistance to Israel which is involved in grave violations of human rights through the conduct of its occupation forces in Gaza and the West Bank. Michael comments on Israel's occupation of hundreds of square kilometers of Syrian land in the aftermath of the vacuum created by the fall of Bashar Al-Assad and Lara characterizes this as an act of aggression under international law which has hardly been described as such by mainstream corporate media. Lara refers to the latest reports from international organizations characterizing Israel's conduct as genocide including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Lara mentions an Israeli massacre of seven children from the same family in the Northern Part of Gaza and the frustration that accompanies the lack of policy change in the face of the most horrific admissions by Israeli soldiers of their crimes reported by the leading Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.

LIVE FROM THE GENEVA!, 13min,. USA Directed by Nick Leahy Amidst the hysteria of the Red Scare in 1953 Chicago, a nightclub staff becomes entangled in a political scandal when their star performer's iconic red-and-gold pocket square becomes the focal point of media chaos. https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/1295719-live-from-the-geneva https://www.instagram.com/livefromthegeneva/ Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? I wanted to write a story that tackled themes of misinformation on the Internet, and especially how they influence our beliefs socially, politically, and economically. And I wanted to sort of find a good way to wake people up to sort of what's been going on around them by comparing that period in which we live in today to that of the Red Scare, and sort of show a compare and contrast between what we know as a terrible period of American history and the Red Scare, and sort of seeing if there is anything we can really learn from it and apply to towards misinformation online today in order to not repeat the same mistakes that we may have already learned in the past. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? It was kind of crazy, because I hadn't heard direct feedback before from people outside my friends and family, so I was a little nervous to see what people would say. But generally, the comments were very nice, and people said that they liked a lot of the stylistic choices and themes. They liked the creativity behind the project, which I am really grateful for. I think I got my message across in a good way. So that's always good news. And yeah, I just appreciated all the kind words. We're going to a land down under, as Shannon Leahy joins us to talk about her love for Australia. She reflects on growing up as a dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia and how it has shaped her life, with childhood summers in Melbourne, the unique family traditions that anchored her to the country, and the value she finds in regular, “mundane” family gatherings. Through family stories, memories of local foods, and Australian treats that hold sentimental value, Shannon expresses her gratitude for being part of a multicultural family and the joy she finds in revisiting and sharing these experiences. Plus, she also offers tips for visitors to Melbourne!Guest BioShannon Leahy (she/her) has worked at the intersection of words, strategy, design, and people for 15 years. In that time, she's been a web copywriter, an SEO specialist, an instructional designer, and a senior UX manager. These days, Shannon's a senior content design manager at Capital One, and she organizes a meetup called RVA Content Strategy, which is running 12 years strong now. Shannon lives in Richmond, Virginia with her family and their dog, Ginger Snap. Melbourne, Australia is her home away from home (she's a dual citizen!). Her favorite neutral is leopard print, and her superpower is asking questions…lots of questions.LinksShannon on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shannonleahyShannon on ADPList: https://adplist.org/mentors/shannon-leahyRVA Content Strategy: https://www.rvacontentstrategy.com/CreditsCover design by Raquel Breternitz.

Send us a textIn 2002 Ally Zapp had a great date night on Boston Harbor. She went on a charity cruise and then a concert on the waterfront. She headed back toward Newport, Rhode Island. She stopped at a Burger King located in a rest stop on Route 24. Ally ran into a vile, convicted sex offender-rapist. Paul Leahy was 39yrs old and had 24 convictions on his record, including rape. Leahy cornered Ally in the ladies room and over nine minutes, he stabbed her countless times, as she begged, repeatedly for her life. Ally died in that Burger King bathroom, however an alert Mass State Trooper Lt. Stephen O'Reilly heard the commotion and entered the bathroom and arrested Leahy at gun point. Why was Leahy out of jail with no supervision? Because, Massachusetts, that's why!"Last Exit" Boston Magazine-Gretchen Voss-https://bit.ly/3V3jt3PCourageous Cop, Honored for Valor Boston Herald-https://bit.ly/41zucWo

Erica Leahy was working in an office job when she realized she had missed her calling. So she gave up her stock options and health plan, left the office and set off for the life of a pastry chef. After unpaid internships, several stints baking for fine restaurants, finding her feet in a commissary kitchen and starting a family, she opened Three Daughters Baking Co. in 2018. In this episode, Mark and Erica talk about the people in her life that have been cheering her on (and pitching in) throughout Erica's baking career, and how she's put down deep roots over the past 16 years in South Orange. There is also talk about Mark's new project, the Bakery Leadership Circle, which has a new session starting in early 2025. Should you expand your business to service new locations? It makes sense, right? If you have a business that's thriving in one area and you've already got an established brand, website and systems in place, it could probably work in another market, too, and everyone involved can make some more money. Yet it's not quite that simple. You personally can't be in more than one location at once. More markets also mean more team members, which means more logistical issues to navigate. So...should you do it anyway?Let's find out from someone who plans weddings throughout the world and has locations in San Francisco, Charleston, Los Angeles, and Miami - Shannon Leahy. -----Shannon Leahy Events@ShannonLeahyEventsWedded: The Wedding Planner Podcast------(00:01:30) Introducing Shannon Leahy(00:05:37) How can event planning be improved through client feedback?(00:07:30) Who's doing all the sales calls?(00:10:00) Shannon's greatest fear when building a team(00:14:00) Getting it out of her head to create SOPs(00:19:00) If you were starting today, what would you do differently?(00:24:00) How do you balance all the things including a personal life?---Today's episode is brought to you by The Planner's Vault.
