This video focuses on chapter 6 of Stanislaw Lem's Summa Technologiae, specifically the section “Personality and Information”, which discusses thought experiments that bear on turning a person into information and reconstituting that person somewhere else or at a different point in time. Specifically it examines on a somewhat different kind of thought-experiment, involving freezing a person, taking all of their atoms out of them while keeping records of their configurations, and then reconstituting and thawing them.

Show Notes As we prepare to enter into the season of Lent, we can often become bogged down by the penitential nature of it. And while we talk a lot about grief, suffering, and loss on the show, we thought we'd take a different approach in this episode and focus on joy. Can joy and sorrow coexist? Is it possible to experience joy while we're in the midst of sorrow? Join us as we explore The Mystery of Joy with Dr. Peter Kreeft in this week's episode. Our GuestDr. Peter Kreeft is a professor of philosophy at Boston College and is one of the most respected and prolific Christian authors of our time. His books cover a vast array of topics in spirituality, theology, and philosophy. They include Doors in the Walls of the World, The Greatest Philosopher Who Ever Lived, How to be Holy, Because God is Real, You can Understand the Bible, and Summa of the Summa. His most recent book, The Mystery of Joy, draws from the wisdom of C. S. Lewis and Saint Thomas Aquinas and is sure to become an instant classic by self-proclaimed curmudgeon Peter Kreeft as he walks readers through the long, beautiful task of surrendering to deep joy, the chief work of any life worth living.ScriptureMatthew 5:3-11 (The Beatitudes)“‘Behold, I make all things new'”. Wednesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas, 1225-1274; the "Angelic Doctor"; born in Aquino, Italy, became a Dominican, and studied under St. Albert the Great; he wrote the Summa theologiae and much of the liturgy for the feast of Corpus Christi; he is considered one of the greatest minds of the Church Office of Readings and Morning Prayer for 1/28/26 Gospel: Mark 4:1-20
Aquinas is the great synthesizer of the natural law, but who exactly is he drawing from? Today, Dr. Randall Smith joins Ben Eriksen to discuss the various philosophers and theologians who influenced Aquinas' thought. Dr. Smith argues that Aristotle did not greatly influence Aquinas' conception of the natural law; instead, he believes that Cicero, Maimonides, and Philo of Alexandria were more pivotal. This enlightening conversation reveals the great depth of the natural law tradition and how we can contribute to this tradition in the modern era. Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint Raymond of Peñafort Saint Raymond of Peñafort's Story Since Saint Raymond of Peñafort lived into his hundredth year, he had a chance to do many things. As a member of the Spanish nobility, he had the resources and the education to get a good start in life. By the time he was 20, he was teaching philosophy. In his early 30s he earned a doctorate in both canon and civil law. At 41 he became a Dominican. Pope Gregory IX called him to Rome to work for him and to be his confessor. One of the things the pope asked him to do was to gather together all the decrees of popes and councils that had been made in 80 years since a similar collection by Gratian. Raymond compiled five books called the Decretals. They were looked upon as one of the best organized collections of Church law until the 1917 codification of canon law. Earlier, Saint Raymond of Peñafort had written for confessors a book of cases. It was called Summa de Casibus Poenitentiae. More than simply a list of sins and penances, it discussed pertinent doctrines and laws of the Church that pertained to the problem or case brought to the confessor. At the age of 60, Raymond was appointed archbishop of Tarragona, the capital of Aragon. He didn't like the honor at all and ended up getting sick and resigning in two years. He didn't get to enjoy his peace long, however, because when he was 63 he was elected by his fellow Dominicans to be the head of the whole Order, the successor of Saint Dominic. Raymond worked hard, visited on foot all the Dominicans, reorganized their constitutions and managed to put through a provision that a master general be allowed to resign. When the new constitutions were accepted, Raymond, then 65, resigned. He still had 35 years to oppose heresy and work for the conversion of the Moors in Spain. He convinced Saint Thomas Aquinas to write his work Against the Gentiles. In his 100th year, the Lord let Raymond retire. Reflection Raymond was a lawyer, a canonist. Legalism can suck the life out of genuine religion if it becomes too great a preoccupation with the letter of the law to the neglect of the spirit and purpose of the law. The law can become an end in itself, so that the value the law was intended to promote is overlooked. But we must guard against going to the opposite extreme and seeing law as useless or something to be lightly regarded. Laws ideally state those things that are for the best interests of everyone and make sure the rights of all are safeguarded. From Raymond, we can learn a respect for law as a means of serving the common good.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

In this episode, Guy talked with Dr. Nisha Manek. She challenges conventional understandings of consciousness and delves into the intersection of science and spirituality. Emphasizing that consciousness is not a product of the brain, Nisha discussed the latent capacities of human beings and the need to elevate our levels of conscious awareness. Through her experiences as a medical doctor and her studies with physicist William Tiller, she explored the potential of intention to affect physical reality, the limitations of modern medicine, and the importance of inner work. Nisha also shared practical advice on meditation and the transformative power of silence. About Dr. Nisha: Nisha Manek is an internally recognized leader in the field of integrative medicine. Nisha's humble background from Kenya propelled her to transcend limitations: gender, ethnicity, and financial status. From Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she graduated Summa cum laude, to the University of Glasgow School of Medicine in Scotland, Nisha's uncommon tenacity has driven her to ask difficult questions and pursue answers beyond traditional medical paradigms. Nisha began her career in rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Recognized as Teacher of the Year in the School of Medicine, she brings storytelling as a core skill to bedside medical teaching and on the plenary stage. But she didn't stop there. Nisha partnered with one of the world's most innovative physicists, Emeritus Professor William A. Tiller of Stanford University, and pushed the boundaries of what is possible in medicine. She is the preeminent doctor of information medicine, which intersects consciousness, biofield science, and rheumatology to improve human health. She has authored a one-of-a-kind book, Bridging Science and Spirit, which closes the gap between two seemingly separate areas of knowledge. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Law in a Culture of Theology: The Use of Canon Law by Parisian Theologians, ca. 1120-ca. 1220 (Routledge, 2025) considers the study of law within its intellectual environment. It demonstrates that theologians associated with the schools of Paris in the twelfth century, particularly Peter the Chanter and his circle, had a working knowledge of Romano-canonical tradition and thought about the human context of the law, which, in turn, reflected the environment in which each master worked. It begins by showing the extent to which law was woven into the fabric of the schools of Paris, and follows with individual case studies. These case studies--marriage in Hugh of St. Victor's De Sacramentis and Peter Lombard's Sententiae, excommunication in Peter the Chanter's Summa de sacramentis et animae consiliis, crusade activity and heresy in Robert of Couçon's Summa penitentiae, homicide in Robert of Flamborough's Liber poenitentialis, and the faces of greed in Thomas of Chobham's Summa confessorum--demonstrate how each theologian drew upon legal thought, for what end he was using it, and how his use of law fit into contemporary legal thinking. A competency in law proved valuable to, and was tailored for, different types of ecclesiastical roles: teachers showing students how to analytically navigate complex questions of pastoral care, papal judge-delegate on the cusp of full-time administration on behalf of the papacy, penitentiarius of St. Victor and the students at the University of Paris, or diocesan management. This book will be a useful resource for all students and researchers interested in medieval canon law, medieval theology and pre-modern law. Learn more about your ad choices. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cristina LePort, author of the book Change of Heart. Dr. Cristina LePort, accomplished cardiologist and Amazon bestselling author, captivates readers with her medical thrillers, which merge her rich medical background with gripping narratives. Cristina's novels, including Dissection and Change of Heart, offer a unique blend of suspense, medical insight, and ethical exploration. Her journey from Italy to the U.S. and transition from medicine to writing highlights her resilience, intellectual curiosity, and dedication to storytelling. Cristina's work stands at the crossroads of medicine and literature, engaging readers with tales that resonate with authenticity and depth. Born in Bologna, Italy, she graduated Summa cum Laude from the University of Bologna, completed her internship and Internal Medicine residency at the Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, and her cardiology training at the VA/UCLA. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Nuclear Cardiology, and is the Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of Genescient, a biotech company devoted to genetic research on aging and longevity. She lives in Corona del Mar, Southern California, with her husband Peter. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. In my book review, I stated Change of Heart by Cristina LePort, MD is a 'sit on the edge of your seat' thriller. The twists and turns kept me turning the pages and hoping for the best. The story opens with a murder - up close and personal. And before long, the three main characters - FBI probie Charlotte Bloom, FBI Agent Jack Mulville, and Private Detective Kirk Miner - are in the thick of things. Who killed Amy Winter and why? As the three uncover details, the picture gets murkier rather than clearer. Something doesn't make sense. And before long, everyone is keeping secrets from someone. Throw in cyber crimes, a mobster, death threats, a budding romance, and a kidnapping, and you've got yourself a thriller that requires you to stay up way past your bedtime to get the answers you simply have to have! I loved this book and know you will, too! In this episode of The Catholic Man Show, hosts Adam Minihan and David Niles share personal anecdotes and deep spiritual insights, focusing on the challenge of distractions in prayer. From road trip stories to household mishaps, the hosts set the stage with relatable humor before diving into a discussion inspired by St. Thomas Aquinas and Father Frederick Faber. They explore the five fountains of distraction in prayer, offering practical advice for cultivating a deeper prayer life by addressing distractions outside of prayer time.Key Discussion Points:Opening Banter (00:00:19 - 00:04:50): David recounts his family road trip to Wyoming, including an unexpected stop in Denver and the challenges of traveling with six kids. Adam shares his chaotic week of household breakdowns, from a malfunctioning dishwasher to a beeping van door and a broken lawnmower, humorously reflecting on the "throwaway culture" he's trying to resist.Health Struggles (00:09:01 - 00:11:24): Adam discusses a rare bout of heartburn that kept him up at night, highlighting his lack of Tums and his struggle to lead a meeting while sleep-deprived and feverish. David relates to his heartburn experience from a past "one chip challenge" on the show.Sponsorship Spotlight (00:12:00 - 00:12:39): The hosts thank Select International Tours, a long-time sponsor, for their reliable pilgrimage offerings. They encourage listeners to visit selectinternationaltours.com for details on their upcoming October pilgrimage to Italy, emphasizing the ideal weather and transformative experience. What We're Drinking (00:37:02 - 00:37:26): Adam and David enjoy Wyoming Whiskey, a bourbon David praises for its affordability ($30 in Wyoming) and delicious flavor, making it a fitting choice for the episode.Main Topic: Distractions in Prayer (00:15:28 - 01:11:09):Personal Reflection: Adam shares a moment of grace in adoration, where he asked God to reveal impediments in his prayer life. A distracting phone check during a conversation revealed his struggle with presence, sparking a realization about the need for focus in both human and divine relationships.Theological Foundation: Drawing from St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica (Second Part of the Second Part) and Father Walter Farrell's Companion to the Summa, the hosts discuss prayer as an act of the will, preceded by the intellect. They reference the Baltimore Catechism's teaching that we are made to “know, love, and serve” God, emphasizing that knowing God fuels love, which leads to service.Five Fountains of Distraction (Father Frederick Faber):Disordered Health: An obsession with health (valetudinarian state) can distract from tranquility in prayer, unlike true suffering, which can draw one closer to God when united with the Cross.Actions of the Holy Spirit: Distractions can serve as a crucible to humble and purify, grounding believers in deeper devotion by burning away self-love.The Devil: Demonic distractions are marked by their abundance, vivid imagery, soul-disquieting nature, disconnection from daily life, repetitive patterns, and potential to lead to sin. Custody of the eyes, especially against sins of the sixth and ninth commandments, is crucial to limit the devil's influence.Inculpable Self: Unintentional distractions arise from temperament, imagination, or poor spiritual direction, which are not deliberately chosen but still disrupt prayer.Culpable Self: Deliberately entertained distractions are grave sins if knowingly allowed during time owed to God. These include:Bodily Sources: Lack...
