Send us a textHello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!Today's episode is something I have wanted to cover for a while and with this being the 32nd anniversary of the death of Mia Zapata and thought this would be the best time to dive into her life, death and legacy.Mia Katherine Zapata was an American musician who was the lead vocalist for the punk rock band The Gits. After gaining praise in the emerging grunge scene, Zapata was raped and murdered in Seattle in 1993 while walking home from the Comet Tavern at the age of 27. The crime went unsolved for a decade before her killer, Jesus Mezquia, was arrested in 2003. The following year, Mezquia was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 36 years in prison.Sources:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/6840130/mia-zapatahttps://unsolved.com/gallery/mia-zapata/https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/12/arts/music/the-gits-mia-zapata-reissues.htmlhttps://forensicfilesnow.com/index.php/2023/10/09/mia-zapata-murder-of-a-front-woman/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mia_ZapataInterview: https://www.npr.org/2024/08/15/nx-s1-5037926/drummer-steve-moriartys-book-remembers-mia-zapata-lead-singer-of-the-gitsHome Alive:https://www.teachhomealive.org/Book:https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/125045908-mia-zapata-and-the-gitshttps://www.amazon.com/Mia-Zapata-Gits-Story-Revolution/dp/1627311505All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched and written by the Teen DaughterEpisode edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.com

“ It's a really dangerous time we're living through, and I do think that when we talk about these progressive policies, a huge problem in the US is that we still have a lot of stigma left over from the Cold War that keeps us from really great ideas because they're branded as socialist or communist. And I've seen, in the time I've been a journalist for the past 15 years, how that stigma has slowly faded. And you see that younger people are more and more interested in these ideas, whether or not they're considered socialist.”Natasha Hakimi Zapata is an award-winning journalist, translator, and university lecturer based in Europe. Natasha Hakimi Zapata joins us to chat w/Ben about her important new book "Another World is Possible: Lessons for America from Around the Globe." From Britain's NHS to Singapore's publicly-leased housing system to New Zealand's egalitarian pensions to Norway's family policies, her book documents the way that countries around the world have proven that social problems that seem intractable in America are in fact perfectly fucking tractable given the political will.

Today, we're speaking with Natasha Hakimi Zapata, an award-winning journalist based in Europe. She's also the author of Another World Is Possible: Lessons for America From Around the Globe. The book came out a few months ago and has given me so much hope and inspiration for the United States. Most of us are closer to being homeless than we are to being millionaires, with only one healthcare disaster, a lost job, or another calamity sending us to the brink. Yet, we often still buy into the myth of being "self-made" in the US, hustling hard to get to a better place one day. It's a promise that hasn't been delivered for many. In her book, Natasha travels to nine countries around the world to show how, in those places, instead of promising better futures tomorrow, there is already a better present now.Become a Going Places member for as little as $6 a month.
