In this episode we learn about the John C. Campbell Folk School, located in Brasstown, North Carolina. Founded just over 100 years ago in 1925, the John C. Campbell Folk School was inspired by the Danish Grundtvigian folk high school tradition and established to serve the culturally distinctive, but economically depressed mountainous region of southern Appalachia. Today, it is one of the oldest and largest folk schools in North America and the guiding inspiration for dozens of younger folk schools around the country, including the Driftless Folk School here in Viroqua, Wisconsin. In this conversation I speak with JCCFS instructor and Programming Development Manager Annie Fain Barralon and Executive Director Bethany Chaney about this inspiring history and about what it is like to participate in a multi-day course in folk arts, craft, music, or dance on their beautiful campus in far western North Carolina. We talk about who attends and teaches these courses, as well as about opportunities for young people to spend longer periods at the Folk School such as their Work Study and Student Host programs (see links below). Finally, Annie Fain talks about what it is like to work as a creative artist in the context of a living folk arts tradition, walking the fine line between original innovation, cultural exchange, and loyalty to heritage.Annie Fain Barralon is a native of the crafts and music/dance community of Brasstown, North Carolina and the John C. Campbell Folk School's Programming Development Manager. She teaches a variety of classes at the school including book arts, clawhammer banjo, and several styles of dance–Appalachian clogging/flatfooting, English waltz clog, Northwest Morris, and Bal Folk (learned when she married into a French family). Annie Fain plays banjo and banjo uke for the all-woman string band, Blue Eyed Girl, and has danced with both Loafers Glory Clog Morris and the Green Grass Cloggers. She sells her handmade books, greeting cards, and original watercolors regionally and is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Bethany Chaney is Executive Director of the John C. Campbell Folk School. Prior to joining the Folk School, Bethany served more than 25 years in a variety of non-profit and public service roles, specializing in resource development, strategic planning, and community and economic development programming. She is an award-winning writer, a former NC Arts Council Fellow, and an avid maker of pine needle baskets, a craft she first nurtured as a Folk School student. In 2025 she was named by Country Living Magazine as a Top 100 Design Influencer as an arts advocate. John C. In this episode, I'm joined by two of my best friends, Sam Warner and Ashley Chaney, for a lively, honest conversation about the April 18 Sweat, Stillness and Feel event in Torrance, California. What starts as a chat about the event quickly turns into something bigger, why midlife can feel so confusing, why so many women are stuck in survival mode, and why being in the right room with the right people can be deeply healing. We talk about emotional safety, nervous system regulation, movement, music, journaling, and the power of being seen without having to perform. This one is warm, funny, and full of heart, with real reminders that healing does not have to be dramatic to be meaningful.Sometimes it starts with simply being in a space where you can breathe, feel, and know you are not the only one carrying hard things.Highlights:(02:50) - What this event is really creating for women in midlife(05:00) - Why female community can lower stress and open the door to healing(07:50) - The truth, you cannot outrun yourself, even with a whole new postcode(10:00) - Why this is not about transformation, but remembering what you can hold(15:00) - What it means to feel everything instead of shutting down(20:53) - What the day will actually look like, from movement to stillness to feelingConnect with Sam and Ashley:https://www.instagram.com/samanthakwarner?igsh=MW5tczhsYnBqbnpwbw==https://www.instagram.com/ashleykrousechaney?igsh=YW52MzM1dTV3bThpQualia Mind - click hereCoupon Code: SHOCKANDYALL (15% off any purchase)Visit Nicole's on demand fitness platform for live weekly classes and a recorded library of yoga, strength training, guided audio meditations and mobility (Kinstretch) classes, as well: https://www.sweatandstillness.comGrab Nicole's bestselling children's book and enter your email for A FREE GIFT: https://www.yolkedbook.comFind Nicole on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nicolesciacca/Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thenicolesciaccaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/nicolesciaccayoga/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1X8PPWCQa2werd4unex1eAPractice yoga with Nicole in person in Santa Monica, CA at Aviator Nation Ride. Episode Summary:In this episode of Explaining History, Nick explores one of the darkest chapters of the American Civil Rights movement: the Freedom Summer of 1964 and the murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.Drawing on Jonathan Darman's Landslide: LBJ and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of a New America, we delve into the terrifying reality of Mississippi in the mid-60s. Why did over a thousand idealistic students head south to register Black voters? And how did the local white establishment—from the police to the Klan—respond with a campaign of terror designed to maintain the racial hierarchy? We examine the chilling details of the abduction and execution of the three civil rights workers, the complicity of local law enforcement, and the political calculations of President Lyndon B. Johnson as he navigated the passage of the Civil Rights Act. I sat down with Myesha Chaney, author, speaker, singer, and yes… a former First Lady who lived her life in front of the world on platforms like Preachers of L.A.And she kept it all the way honest: the pressure, the identity, the performance… and the moment she realized she couldn't keep surviving off optics. We talk about:• Why counseling “too late” can't undo years of emotional neglect• The difference between love and love with action• How childhood trauma shows up in marriage• Why church culture can celebrate you one day, then forget you the next• And what it really takes to heal until you don't have a scab… you've got a scarAnd family… in a season where the internet has been loud about pastors, platforms, and marriages, including what people have been discussing publicly around Jamal Bryant and his wife, I wanted this conversation to bring balance: accountability, healing, and truth… without the gimmicks. If this episode blesses you, do me a favor:✅ Subscribe✅ Leave a comment✅ Share this with somebody who needs hopeAnd remember… don't just love people. Today is Thursday, December 18th and Happy birthday to Keith Richards I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Arizona developer building 300-plus apartments in Peachtree Corners' Technology Park First buildings underway at Sugarloaf Crest in Lawrenceville GGC celebrates future nurses during pinning ceremony Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on saturated fats All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: GCPS Hiring-Villa Rica Wonderland Train STORY 1: Arizona developer building 300-plus apartments in Peachtree Corners' Technology Park Technology Park Atlanta, a hub for Fortune 500 companies and tech innovators, is about to get a residential twist. Soon, it won’t just be a place to work—it’ll be home for hundreds. Alliance Residential Company, the Arizona-based developer behind Broadstone Peachtree Corners, has snagged 10.7 acres in the park to build Broadstone Innovation, a 326-unit apartment community set to open in spring 2027. Think sleek, modern living: a salt sauna, red-light therapy pods, a resort-style pool, EV chargers, and even a food truck zone. STORY 2: First buildings underway at Sugarloaf Crest in Lawrenceville Parkland Residential has kicked off vertical construction at Sugarloaf Crest, a new build-to-rent community in Gwinnett County. What’s that mean? Townhomes—67 of them—are going up on 5.2 acres, complete with a big central green space. Located on Sugarloaf Parkway, right next to Richards Middle and Cedar Hill Elementary, these two- and three-bedroom homes are designed for modern living: open layouts, sleek kitchens, walk-in closets, and even washers and dryers included. The three-bedroom units? They’ve got lofts and nearly 2,000 square feet of space. STORY 3: GGC celebrates future nurses during pinning ceremony In a room buzzing with pride and emotion, 39 nursing students at Georgia Gwinnett College celebrated their pinning ceremony—a moment that marks the leap from student to nurse. “Y’all, it’s been two years!” joked Merick Sanogo, the class speaker, earning laughs and cheers. His classmates surprised him with a pineapple, a nod to his quirky tradition of gifting one on every birthday. The ceremony, steeped in tradition, included the lighting of the Nightingale Lamp and the Nurse Pledge. For Prudence Donald, an international student from Tanzania, it was a dream realized. “If you can dream it, you can achieve it,” she said. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 07.14.22 KIA MOG- DTL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Freight rail line from coast to northwest Georgia reports record traffic Georgia’s freight rail line from the Port of Savannah to Murray County just hit a record: nearly 4,000 containers moved in November, a 35% jump from last year. Seven CSX trains a week now roll through the Appalachian Regional Port near Chatsworth, cutting truck traffic—and emissions—in metro Atlanta. Opened in 2018, the inland port is fueling growth in northwest Georgia. A UGA study found it added 5,600 jobs in Dalton, Rome, and beyond over two years. And there’s more to come: the $127 million Blue Ridge Connector, opening next spring, promises to expand rail capacity even further. STORY 5: GGC's Devontre Chaney, Brasen James Earn Continental Athletic Conference Awards Georgia Gwinnett College juniors Devontre Chaney and Brasen James just snagged Continental Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after leading the Grizzlies to a big road win. Chaney? He was unstoppable—15 points, 15 boards, and eight assists. Oh, and he went 9-for-10 at the line. That’s his seventh double-double this season. The guy’s averaging 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds. James locked it down defensively, holding his matchup to just six points (16 below average) while adding 14 of his own. FALCONS: As the Falcons limp toward the end of a rough 2025 season, the big question looms: will Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot keep their jobs? Atlanta’s 5-9 record doesn’t inspire much confidence, even after Thursday’s wild 29-28 comeback win over Tampa Bay. Sure, it was fun—rallying from 14 down in the fourth quarter—but in the grand scheme? It’s meaningless. The playoffs are out of reach, even in the laughable NFC South. Despite a 13-18 record, failed coaching hires, and some head-scratching moves (what was that with Ike Hilliard?), Morris has the locker room behind him. Bijan Robinson, for one, is all in. Owner Arthur Blank will have a tough call to make. Morris says it’s about building for next year, but will he get the chance? Three games remain—Arizona, the Rams, and the Saints. If the Falcons finish strong, maybe Morris gets another shot. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on saturated fats We’ll have closing comments after this Break 3: Ingles Markets 10 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, Clay and Amanda are celebrating a major milestone in horror history: the 100th anniversary of the 1925 silent film classic The Phantom of the Opera. Starring the legendary Lon Chaney in one of the most iconic monster performances ever put on film, this adaptation helped define cinematic horror, gothic atmosphere, and studio-era spectacle. Clay and Amanda dig into the film's legacy, its influence on everything from Universal's monster cycle to modern horror aesthetics, and why Chaney's Phantom remains haunting a full century later. It's a birthday worth celebrating — even if I'm still trying to wrap my head around the basic concept.Because I have a question. A very serious one. Why — why — would you make a silent movie** about the opera? Opera is music! It's singing! It's loud! It's dramatic people hitting notes so high it feels like glass might shatter. And yet here we are, watching a movie where everyone is passionately gesturing at each other in total silence while title cards politely explain that someone is singing their heart out. I keep expecting the Phantom to burst into song, only for a piano to gently tinkle in the background like, “Trust us, it's happening.”Still, despite my confusion, there's no denying the magic. The sets are enormous, the shadows are gorgeous, and Lon Chaney's transformation into the Phantom is pure movie sorcery. Clay and Amanda walk through how the film used visuals to replace sound, turning music into movement and emotion into imagery. They talk about the famous unmasking, the tragedy of Erik the Phantom, and how the film somehow makes opera feel loud even when you can't hear a note.So join them in honoring 100 years of The Phantom of the Opera. I may not hear the music, but apparently… that's the point. And don't forget to head over to patreon.com/thepenskyfile to follow Clay and Amanda down the muddy path of remakes and reboots too!

It is always a roll of the dice when attempting to make aconnection for a phone interview. We went through some things to get Kentucky native Cole Chaney on in a timely manner one fall morning as he and his crew were checking out of their Airbnb en route to Kansas City for a show atKnuckleheads. For Chaney, even though he's only in his mid-twenties, his lyrical life has been quite prolific already. Cole grew up in rural Appalachia, went to welding school but has taken thatproverbial leap of faith to pursue music. An admiration for 1990's rock is a vital influence and on Cole's latest, In the Shadow of the Mountain, he aims to find balance between rock and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. In Cole's own words, “In a lot of ways, things have goneextremely far. And yet, so many things have remained the same,” “And that's been the beauty of the journey.”I look forward to following Cole's journey as his navigateshis lyrical life. Enjoy this conversation (despite the challenge of some background noise) with another extremely talented son of Kentucky, Cole Chaney.

EPISODE 110 - “LON CHANEY SR, and LON CHANEY JR” - 10/25 LON CHANEY, known as the 'Man of a Thousand Faces,' amazed audiences in the silent era with his unforgettable performances in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). His son, LON CHANEY, JR., had the difficult job of following in his father's footsteps. But he made his own mark, especially as The Wolf Man (1941), a role that turned him into one of Universal's great horror stars. Join us as we discuss this remarkable father-and-son duo, their careers, their lives, and how the Chaney name became synonymous with both monsters and movie magic. It's taken 692 podcasts before The Man Of 1000 Faces has come up on Have You Ever Seen, but here Lon Chaney finally is as the title character in Rupert Julian's Phantom Of The Opera. Despite the high kill count, this isn't particularly scary...although it IS eerily effective. The colour tinting in this otherwise black & white movie helps set a baleful mood. And the red-letter moment is when Mary Philbin takes off the Phantom's mask and shows us the makeup Chaney designed to give himself such a horrible face. He wants her affections, while she just wants to perform. So come for the Opera, but stay to hear about how the obsessive Phantom wouldn't take no for an answer 100 years ago. Subscribe to this channel in your app, but help grow the show by rating and reviewing it. The Phantom writes notes all the time. You can too! Don't be silent like this movie is. Speak up by sending me a lotta notes on Twi-X (@moviefiend51) or Bluesky (ryan-ellis) or via email (haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com). Also, I write short reviews on Letterboxd. I'm "RyanHYES". The goal is to find a fun angle, not to do a proper review.

What if we considered a new/ancient approach for healing ourselves...and the land? Anna Chaney went out on a limb to try to find answers for her own health and stumbled upon "energy healing." And while it may sound "woo woo", energy medicine helped her resolve many chronic conditions that were plaguing her. Anna then went on to implement ancient practices for the healing of her land. She started prioritizing "living soil" (her #1 crop). She began playing the long game by following permaculture principles and other simple, ancestral techniques to revitalize the land, make it more productive, and enable it to provide healthy veggies, untouched by artificial, chemical inputs—so that it could make better the lives of generations to come.
