Svetlano Slapšak obče bralstvo pozna kot vsestransko ustvarjalko, v prvi vrsti morda najprej kot neutrudno preučevalko antike, ki jo raziskuje s pomočjo različnih ved, kot so antropologija, zgodovina in literarne vede. Na to temo je objavila številne znanstveno podkovane knjige, med drugim Antično miturgijo, obširno in izvirno študijo grško-rimskih mitov, poglobljeno pa se je lotila tudi manj izpostavljenih topik oziroma fenomenov znotraj antike, o čemer pričata denimo publikaciji Zelje in spolnost ter Volna in telo. Svoje pero pa avtorica že dlje časa preizkuša tudi v literarnih vodah, njena zadnja romana imata naslov Kje smo? in Šola za delikatne ljubimce. Dela, ki jih piše, se ne ponašajo zgolj z znanstveno podkovanostjo na eni strani in izdelano pisavo na drugi, pač pa nosijo v sebi tudi izostren socialni čut, posebno humanistično težnjo po izpostavljanju in razgaljanju represivnih sistemov in njihovih odvodov v zgodovini. V obsežnem delu Hetera in filozof: Iz zgodovinske antropologije svobodnega para je piska skozi feministično študiozno prizmo po vzoru Simone de Beauvoir dregnila v samo osrčje antične patriarhalne strukture, za katero lahko trdimo, da se je ohranila vse do danes, in sicer dekonstruira zakonsko heteroseksualno zvezo oziroma družino. Pri tem jo, kot lahko razberemo iz poimenovanja raziskave, zanimajo odkloni od le-te, torej svobodnejše prakse ljubezni. Osrednja lika tega diskurza ali zgodbe sta hetera, izobražena kurtizana in filozof, ki se znajdeta na specifičnem mestu v družbi, kot zapiše Slapšak, »blizu roba družbe, ona po nuji, on po izbiri«. Tej dvojici je skupna mobilnost na »trgu dela«, saj mora tako kot kurtizana tudi kakšen filozof že v 5. stoletju pred našim štetjem, se pravi že v času atenske demokracije, ponujati svoje intelektualne zmožnosti v zameno za plačilo. Avtorica nam takšno zvezo oziroma potencial le-te demonstrira kot subverzivno gesto, ki rahlja rigiden in nasilen družbeni red, saj se ta odnos ne osredotoča na reprodukcijo in ohranjanje normativnih, tradicionalnih vrednot, ampak naj bi temeljil na tovarištvu, solidarnosti in zavezništvu, recipročnem in fluidnem prepletu dveh intelektov, pri čemer naj bi v tem odnosu do večje svobode prišla tudi ženska. Namreč: »Grška družbena ureditev, še zlasti demokratična v Atenah, je temeljila na popolni izključenosti žensk iz javnega in političnega življenja«. Morda bo bralstvo nekoliko presenečeno, ker bo izvedelo relativno malo o dejansko obstoječih parih hetere in filozofa, in tudi nastanek svobodnejše zveze ni podrobno predstavljen ali analiziran. Temu se seveda ne gre čuditi, primarni pisni viri o takšnih razmerjih so zelo skromni. A avtorica študije razprostira širšo antropološko-zgodovinsko sliko vsakdanjika »starodobnikov«, v katero vključuje tudi precizno in kritično branje mitov, filozofskih besedil, umetniških del in seveda antičnega leposlovja, pri čemer kreativno in imaginativno razmišlja oziroma sklepa o možnih dejanskostih para, o njunih položajih od atenske demokracije prek helenizma do krščanstva, o spremembah, ki jih je vnesla redefinicija ljubezenskega odnosa. Eden izmed najbolj vznemirljivih primerov v knjigi je zveza med Apsazijo in Periklom, ki ga sicer poznamo bolj kot državnika. Hetera in filozof je delo izredne eruditske širine, ki po eni strani razgalja patriarhalne vzorce atenske oziroma starogrške kulture, izpostavlja konzervativnost mislecev, kot je Aristotel, ki je verjel, da so ženske nižja bitja, preučuje mite, ki so polni brutalnega nasilja do žensk, in so kot taki vplivali tudi na javni diskurz in strukturiranje spolnih vlog, po drugi strani pa se fokusira na zgodbe o ženskah, ki so si izborile drobtinice svobode oziroma vsaj možnost individualnega akterstva, izpostavlja filozofe in pisce, ki so bili, kot Platon in Aristofan, ženskam bolj naklonjeni, ter opozarja na pestrost mitologije, ki je vsebovala seveda tudi like iznajdljivih, premetenih, samosvojih žensk. Učili so nas, da so mitologije načini, kako so si ljudje razlagali svet. A kot poudarja Svetlana Slapšak, je »snovanje mitoloških zgodb imelo včasih zelo preproste ideološke cilje, denimo da prikrije in minimalizira dejanske dogodke in odnose«. Tudi mitologija je tako lahko služila kot sredstvo za izvajanje represije, upravičevanje arbitrarnih norm, a kot vsaka zgodba ima tudi mit drugo, kreativnejšo, subverzivnejšo plat. Avtorica nas z veščo in dinamično pisavo, ki presega suhoparen znanstveni diskurz, potegne v živahen, kontrasten antični svet, pri čemer ob stvareh, ki jih nekako že poznamo iz zgodovine, spoznamo kup zabavnih dejstev iz vsakdanjika določenih skupin in posameznikov, z zanimanjem spremljamo njihove rituale in tako dalje. Tako izvemo, da si po pričeski lahko ne le prepoznal filozofa, ampak tudi ugotovil, kateri šoli pripada, ali da je obstajalo več vrst prostitutk, med katerimi so bile hetere najbolj »prestižne«, namenjene pretežno aristokraciji in »užitkom«, pornai pa so bile za »navadne smrtnike« in za zadovoljevanje »potreb«. Morda presenetljiv, a relevanten je tudi podatek, da je bila ginekološka vednost v antiki že precej napredna, zatrlo pa jo je nato krščanstvo, ki je demoniziralo žensko telo. Za literarne sladokusce bo še posebej dragocen pretežno zadnji del knjige, ki se loteva raziskovanja heter kot žanra. Med drugim razčlenjuje antični ljubezenski roman, ki je dlje časa veljal za ženski roman, nekaj literarno »manjvrednega«. Vendar pa, kot pronicljivo pokaže Svetlana Slapšak, je vseboval pomembne nastavke za razumevanje novega koncepta ljubezni. Lahko bi rekli, da avtorica knjigo Hetera in filozof zaključi z najbolj intrigantno in inovativno vsebino. Seveda je celotna knjiga polna fascinantne vednosti in razmišljanj, morda se le kdaj za kratek čas izgubimo zaradi tematskih digresij oziroma preskokov, kjer avtorica eno linijo »pripovedi« prekine z drugo. Izhodišče ni debela knjiga, ampak rokopis, ki so ga na kotorski tržnici našli na papirju, v katerega je ribič zavil svojo robo. Glavni junak filma je njegov domnevni avtor Đuko, najbolj zvest podanik Morlaka, vodje gorskega ljudstva, ki se na začetku 19. stoletja upira turškemu zavojevanju. Đukovo pričevanje je zgodba o misteriozni transformaciji njegovega vladarja, ki jo ta doživlja ob bolezni in življenju, prepredenem s smrtjo. Film tako ne govori o velikih zgodovinskih dejanjih, ampak o poeziji in filozofiji, ki izraščata iz gole eksistencialne krize in temeljnega dvoma o oblasti ter privilegijih in dolžnostih, ki jih ta prinaša. Skozi dovršeno fotografijo, scenografijo in kostumografijo se film poglablja v eksistencialne teme o ujetosti, ranljivosti in smrti. Ujetost v domačo ozkost je prikazana z majhnimi, zaprtimi prostori, ki pa jih kot kontrast domačnosti vedno znova oživijo človeku najbližje stvari: sanje, ogenj, ljubezen, gore. Ko se vladarjeva odprava – njegova hčerka, Đuko in zvesti oproda Božo – poda na pot Morlakove ozdravitve, se slika odpre in razsvetli. V zdravilišču na jugu Italije naravo počasi zamenjajo človeške konstrukcije – tako fizične kot mentalne –, v katerih se vladar izgublja in se jim predaja. Hkrati se zbližuje s črnogorskim intelektualcem, ki ga sreča na poti, in se odmika od svojega zvestega Đuka, čigar pogled in redke besede izražajo vse večjo odtujenost od izseljenstva in vladarja. Ob tem lahko omenimo dva monumentalna prizora. Morlak in intelektualec sta potopljena v nepregledno množico knjig v starodavni knjižnici, medtem ko ju Đuko opazuje na vhodu in ne upa ali ne želi vstopiti. V drugem prizoru dvojica uživa ob prepevanju srce parajoče žalostinke pod velikimi oboki neprepoznavno velikanske zgradbe, Đuko pa tega preprosto ne zdrži več in uporabi nasilje. Skupaj z Đukom tako drsimo v domotožje, neučakanost in jezo, hkrati pa se z Morlakom čudimo lepoti človeških in božanskih stvaritev, pri čemer vse bolj slutimo človeško majhnost in končnost. Medtem ko pogled prvega predstavlja tradicionalno zavezanost domovini in ljudsko skeptičnost do vsega, kar jo presega, pa drugi zastopa prav predanost temu presežku. Morlak se tako vse bolj prepušča umetnosti in znanju, kar izraža tako v besedah kot gibih, a pri tem pozablja na svoje dolžnosti do ljudstva in domovine. Đuko pa, kot bi želel uravnovesiti vladarjevo razpuščenost, postaja vse bolj surov in nasilen, s čimer želi izsiliti vrnitev domov. Pri tem se film nikoli prav ne opredeli do ene ali druge skrajnosti. Prva namreč zapade v ozkosrčnost, nestrpnost in nasilje, druga pa v vzvišenost, odtujenost in melanholijo. Odnos med Đukom in njegovim vladarjem tako simbolizira dvoumen odnos človeka do svoje preteklosti: medtem ko se je treba zavedati svojih korenin in zgodovine, pa je pri tem treba tudi razpuščati in ubijati njene junake ter mite, sicer lahko vodijo v nevarne predsodke in zanke, v katere oblast vedno znova ujame ljudstvo. 2-11-25 Tonight we're talking with Kirubell Araya, owner of The Heritage Winery, in New Jersey. Kirubell has taken over the making of t'ej from his father, and is now located in the old location for Melovino Meadery. The Heritage Winery has been open since 1978, making it one of the oldest honey wineries in the US. Araya Yibrehu, Kirubell's father, is a pioneer in bringing Ethiopian cuisine and Tej to the United States. He opened Sheba in 1978, argueably the first Ethiopian restaurant in the US. Over the years he opened several more restaurants, with the most renowned being the Blue Nile in NYC, which became an icon for Ethiopian food lovers. Beyond this, Araya was also a trailblazer in crafting and commercializing Tej n the US, helping to preserve and share this ancient tradition with a wider audience. This would later become the Heritage Winery. Kirubell followed in his father's entrepreneurial footsteps, and grew up immersed in the family business. He graduated from Morehouse College in 2010, and went into commodities brokering, but came back to his roots. He joined the family venture in 2013, bringing a fresh vision and new identity to the Heritage Winery. In 2018 he left his job in finance to dedicate himself to expanding the company. The Heritage Winery meads are made with organic, single-source honey from sustainable farms. Each batch is carefully fermented to highlight the rich floral complexity of the honey, balanced with the earthy bitterness of hops, a key ingredient in traditional Tej. Currently they offer Axum Tej, made with wildflower honey, and Saba Tej, crafted from orange blossom honey. They plan to expand into meads that include fruit, coffee and sparkling Tej, moving an ancient drink into the 21st century.
