Piše Iztok Ilich, bere Jure Franko. Priprave na spomladi zaokrožen kulturno-politični projekt Evropska prestolnica kulture, ki je ustvarjalno povezal obe Gorici, so spodbudile posebno razpoloženje, iz katerega so ob uradnem programu dogodkov spontano rasle različne bolj osebne povezave. Tako je tudi nastajanje knjige Volkuljin sin združilo dva avtorja, enega iz slovenske in drugega z italijanske strani današnje meje, ki mesti deli in povezuje. V ustvarjalni dialog sta se zapletla Anton Špacapan Vončina, ilustrator, kipar in scenograf iz Šempetra pri Gorici, ter pesnik Francesco Tomada, srednješolski učitelj v Gorici. Njuno sodelovanje se je razvilo iz zamisli, da bi posnela film na temo življenja Slovencev v obdobju fašističnega raznarodovalnega terorja. »Vse skupaj,« je genezo romana opisal Špacapan Vončina, »se je res začelo z idejo, da bi naredili kratkometražni film. Napisal sem list in pol A4 formata zgodbe, ta del je ostal skoraj nedotaknjen in je prva stran romana." Besedilo je v nadaljevanju pisal na prtičke iz oštarij, ki jih je nato, kot dodaja, "Francesco na srečo prelevil v Times New Roman, sicer nikoli ne bi prišlo do konca." Popisani prtički so se drug za drugim sestavljali v roman, Špacapan pa je medtem ves čas risal zgodbo. Ne presenetljivo, saj je bolj kot pisatelj ilustrator pa tudi scenograf, kipar in performer recikliranja ter obenem zelo vizualen tip ustvarjalca z bogatimi izkušnjami v svetu filma. Ilustracije, sta se nazadnje strinjala avtorja, niso bile vključene v knjigo (Špacapan jih je pozneje posebej predstavil na razstavi), pisanje pa je ohranilo nizanje daljših in krajših sekvenc, značilnih za filmske kadre. Kmalu po italijanskem izvirniku je delo s prevodom Gašperja Maleja dobilo tudi slovensko izdajo. Prizorišče pripovedi je Čepovan, slovenska vas, ki je bila po prvi svetovni vojni z rapalsko mejo odtrgana od nove jugoslovanske države in so jo novi gospodarji preimenovali v Chiapovano. Začetek opisanega dogajanja je zaznamovan z datumom 3. februar 1931, ko so fašistične oblasti iz Gorice poslale v vas manjšo vojaško posadko. Ne zato, ker bi jo bilo treba braniti, pač pa poitalijančiti, kar se dotlej ni zgodilo. V šoli, cerkvi in gostilni je še vedno odzvanjala barbarska slovenščina, ki je preprosti domačini niso bili pripravljeni sami od sebe zamenjati za vzvišeno kulturo in jezik dedičev mogočnega Rima. Tej ugotovitvi je sledil jasen ukaz: »Tukaj se govori samo italijansko!« In ker sama zapoved ni zadoščala, so Italijani stopnjevali nasilje. Z oken hiš so ukazali odstraniti polknice, da ne bi bilo nič skrito njihovim pogledom. Odpustili so dolgoletno učiteljico Majdo in začeli, za svarilen zgled, trpinčiti vaščane, ki se niso uklonili novim pravilom. Potem ko iz notranjosti države dalj časa niso poslali nadomestnega učitelja, je pouk prevzel sam poveljujoči poročnik Angelo, zagrenjen vojni invalid na vozičku. Najostreje se je lotil samosvojih Kafolovih, deda Miroslava, očeta Karla in enajstletnega Srečka. Luca Manegheso v spremni besedi v kljubovalnem Srečku vidi celo očiten namig na Kosovela, ki se je uprl preimenovanju v Fortunata. To je vrhnja, realna plast pripovedi z zgodovinskim ozadjem in sporočilom, da nasilje prejkoslej rodi upor. Nekateri, večinoma že pokojni vaščani v njej nastopajo s pravimi imeni in vlogami, tiste ki tega niso želeli, pa sta avtorja preimenovala ali ustvarila nove like. Hkrati se je izpod površja začela čedalje močneje oglašati lokalna legenda o ženski, ki se je spremenila v orjaško belo volkuljo. Kadar se je iznenada prikazala iz gozda, so za njo ostale luže krvi v snegu. Pojavila pa se je vedno, kadar so se v nevarnosti znašli Srečko in njegovi. V tem strašljivem liku je mogoče zaslutiti tudi pridušen vpliv svoj čas v hribih nad Vipavsko dolino razširjene staroverske prakse, ki po pisanju Pavla Medveščka prav v okolici Čepovana pozna skrivnostno Belo v gozdu. Volkulja se je Srečku naposled dala prepoznati kot njegova nesrečna mati, ki ni zbolela in umrla, kot sta mu govorita oče in ded, ampak je po preobrazbi v zver zbežala v gozd in od daleč bdela nad svojim edincem. Potem ko je krvavo obračunala z Italijani, ki imajo v svojih genih med drugimi zapisan mit, da sta Večno mesto ustanovila posvojenca volkulje Romul in Rem, je fanta prepustila odraščanju in se vrnila v gozd. Obrnjena analogija, ki sta jo uporabila Anton Špacapan Vončina in Francesco Tomada, kajpada ni brez razloga. Ne nazadnje je tudi fašistična vzgoja poznala volčiče, volkuljine sinove in hčere, šest do osem let stare dečke in deklice, ki so jim v državni organizaciji Balilla vcepljali dučejevo ideologijo. Avtorja romana Volkuljin sin se na tej prelomni točki ne poslovita od upornega Srečka, temveč njegovi zgodbi v skopih obrisih sledita do konca. Kot partizan Snežak se je pozimi 1944 proslavil z uničenjem dveh italijanskih kamionov, dobro leto pozneje pa ga je partijska sodna komisija kaznovala z zaporom, ker je, še vedno zavezan pravici, spričo pomanjkljivih dokazov zavrnil ukaz za usmrtitev štirih osumljencev. Poleti 1971 se je peščica prijateljev od Srečka poslovila v tišini prazne pokopališke kapele v Solkanu. Brez pridig in poslovilnih govorov …
