Continuing our Gamescom 2024 coverage, Chris and James look back at the biggest announcements from this year's Opening Night Live showcase. We talk about Take-Two's packed 2025 line-up, the range of updates from Xbox's many studios, and some of the big surprises, such as the new fantasy god game Masters of Albion from veteran designer Peter Molyneux and his team at 22Cans. You can find out more about Molyneux's approach to this - potentially his final game - in his full interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Let's talk about the end of The Last of Us Online, Insomniac's situation, the Death Stranding movie, Spring Breakers, almost buying another Xbox, remembering Godus, uninstalling The Finals, and more.
My guest today is an English video game designer and programmer. In 1984 he designed The Entrepreneur, a simulation game about running a start-up company. When it sold just two copies, however, my guest left the world of video games and began exporting cans of baked beans to the Middle East. When the computer manufacturer Commodore mistook this venture for a software company with a similar name, my guest signed a deal to design a database system for the Amiga. This benign deception eventually led to the founding of Bullfrog Productions, where my guest designed Populous, the first so-called god game, which went on to sell more than four million copies. Many more successes followed: 1994's Theme Park, 1997's Dungeon Keeper then, after he founded Lionhead Studios, the multi-million selling Fable series. My guest is no stranger to controversy either; his more recent, experimental work at 22Cans, the company he founded in 2012, has sometimes been accused of overpromising and underdelivering. He remains, nonetheless, a legendary – if elusive – figure in the UK games industry. Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. Well, now.We couldn't do a normal episode because Chris and I are jetting off to pummel some bastards at Glesgames. You should come! So, instead I managed to pull friend, podcaster and esteemed luxomancer Gareth Dutton of Chat Very Good and Making Games Is Fun fame into resurrecting a failed MGIF project for your entertainment. For those not aware, MGIF is Gary's project where he interviews game developers and photographs them, producing a written article, a podcast, and a photoshoot with each developer. It's cool and you should check it out.You can hear the full story in the show, but here's the gist: this episode contains the highlights of Gary's short interview with Peter Molyneux and Ryan Singh of 22Cans, recorded not long after that RPS interview. The plan was to revisit the studio and do some more photos and a longer interview, but logistical issues and unanswered e-mails put a stop to it. So Gary took the best bits of what he had, and we listened to it together whilst intermittently offering our stupid fucking opinions as we went.It was a lot of fun to record, and hopefully you mugs will appreciate having something slightly different to listen to this fortnight.Normal service will resume prrrrobably in a fortnight, unless me and Chris somehow record something at Glesgames. Which would be funny, but don't hold your breath. Seriously, you'll die.x
On this week's podcast we discuss the possibility of Fallout 4, the sorry state of Godus, and Jay puts us all at risk of heading to prison by discussing Ar nosurge. Oh and here's the 22Cans video referenced in the podcast:
Now THIS is a podcast! Though seriously, WTFAYNPGTAV people?! Anyways, we do appreciate you taking the time to listen, as this is arguably the best podcast we have put out to date. Justin joins Brad and I to discuss topics ranging from our Current Affairs, World of Warcraft and Brad's thoughts on improving the game, my own thoughts on the GODUS beta, Doctor Who news, and assorted stories from all of us. Seriously, if you listen to one episode of ConCal, this is the one! Then keep listening after that, dammit!
This week Brad and I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with Matthew Allen, the Community Manager for 22Cans, Community Manager for The Dead Hamster, and Community Contact for Lionhead Studios. For the last couple of months Brad and I have discussed the importance of what goes into making a successful game; the topic almost always falling back to how a company embraces the community. After months of discussing this, it seemed time to bring someone on to explain to us what goes into the process, and how he found himself in that career. It's not all community relations topics though, as we pick Matthew's brain about his thoughts on companies like 22Cans and Lionhead Studios, as well as what he thinks is going on with both current and next-gen gaming. It's a long one (so to speak), so strap yourself in (seriously, so to speak) and get ready to listen to some fun conversations on gaming.
First thing's first: come to our End of Year Show! Check out our post about it here!Shan and Omar join Sam to talk about Peter Molyneux's 22Cans, financial morality and ultraviolence in games, scary! But it's not all heavy stuff as we give a shout out to all the gaming dads for Father's Day, talk about Tropico 4 and recommend Botanicula.Remember to subscribe in iTunes and please leave a comment or e-mail us letting us know what you think.Download the MP3 directly.Add the Podcast feed to your RSS reader.Subscribe using iTunes.Hosts: Sam Barker, Omar Bobat, Shan BlackwoodMusic: http://www.purple-planet.com/
