POPULARITY
In 1994, Bullfrog Productions released Theme Park, a construction and management simulation that would go on to sell fifteen million copies and define a genre. In this episode, David and Rob trace the game's development from Peter Molyneux's initial concept through the year and a half of work that brought it to life, led by a seventeen-year-old programmer named Demis Hassabis working a gap year before Cambridge. They explore how Hassabis built the game's visitor simulation from scratch, why multiplayer was cut two weeks before release, and what it meant that Molyneux's bet on bright colors for Japan paid off exactly as predicted. They also follow the thread forward from Theme Park's role in establishing a genre to the Nobel Prize in Chemistry that Hassabis won in 2024 for work that began with the same questions he was asking in Guildford in 1993. Join David and Rob as they look back at the little people, the late-night spreadsheets, and the teenager who built them on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

We weren't able to get together this week, so instead we have an interview special: a conversation with industry veteran Peter Molyneux. This was recorded shortly before the release of his latest - and, he says, final - game, Masters of Albion, and discusses both the game and his legacy as one of a dwindling number of brand-name auteurs in the games industry. In 2001, Black & White asked a question that most games still don't bother asking. What kind of god would you be? Developed by Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios over three years, built on some of the most ambitious artificial intelligence ever attempted in a commercial video game, and released on March 27th, 2001, it was a game where your choices shaped the world, your creature learned from watching you, and the land itself kept score. In this episode, we trace the accidental career of Peter Molyneux — from a wrong number that launched Bullfrog, to a drunken email that founded Lionhead — and explore how twelve years of god games finally led to the one he always wanted to make. We look at the wizard concept that became a god game, the AI that tried to pass the Turing Test, the creature that tried to eat itself at MIT, and the development chaos of two million lines of code, three thousand bugs, and a Christmas party canceled on December 26th. We also reckon honestly with what Black & White got right, what it got wrong, and why a community of developers is still rebuilding it from scratch twenty-five years later. Join us as we stretch out our hand and ask the question on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

Burnie and Ashley discuss Tesla's sunset strategy, army of robots, future pods, Peter Molyneux, Fable IV, boomer roleplay, Brandon Sanderson, adapatations, Harry Potter, and the US nationwide shutdown strike.
Happy holidays, listeners! Our gift to you is that we're not dead and we have also dedicated ourselves to updating the massive amount of topics that we've covered since we started all the way back in 2018. What is Peter Molyneux working on these days? How much does Poop Slinger cost? Tune in to find out!

Following months of swirling rumors, Halo Combat Evolved has its remake. It's called Halo Campaign Evolved and you can play it next year on Xbox, PC, and yes, even PlayStation! It has everything from sprinting to aiming down sights, but more surprising is the new content found within. Cutscenes have been entirely reshot, new prequel missions are being added to the game, new weapons are getting thrown in there, and even the warthog saw an expansion to it. Cog and Gene had the opportunity to go hands-on with a demo of this remake and the takeaways are what you'd expect from a Halo Studios led project. Indeed, it's the familiar cocktail of optimism for what's in front of you and lingering skepticism from the thing you just got.
