A24 may have launched modestly in the early 2010s, but it didn’t take long for the indie distributor to reshape American cinema. To mark the company’s first decade — spanning Spring Breakers and The Bling Ring through Moonlight, Lady Bird, The Florida Project, and more — Adam and Josh convened the debut Filmspotting Draft in August 2022: ten A24 titles each, no shared picks, no trades, no fighting. Spring Breakers is essentially a teen exploitation film and has very little of the hyperrealism of his 90s cult classic, Kids. It is quite the opposite; the Tumbler-style image montage of a film appears to be a meditation on the vacuous and the deeply problematic areas of American culture, namely drugs, young girls, white rappers, and group sex. But the commentary on “aesthetics” as an indication of ideals unsaid is profoundly pertinent to girlhood in this country. The soundtrack, consisting of two Britney Spears songs at a time when her 5150 and subsequent conservatorship was embedded in culture, draws an unmistakable image of the freedom-seeking at the core of every neon bikini and ‘down to f**k' branded pair of sweatpants worn in this film.

A vintage AOFA concept that nobody liked is back! In late 2022, Sonny and Tom played a game in which they read the beginning of movie descriptions and attempted to guess how the movies ended. The concept was nice, but the outcome was awful. Today, wiser in the years that have passed us by like cars on a dusty highway, Sonny and Tom have revamped the concept with a new take. Instead of guessing together, one host who already knows the ending of the movie will present the other host with three multiple choice options for how it ends. And while this isn't an official game episode (it's simply an exhibition match), the concept certainly plays like it's a game episode. Which means you can play along as the boys try to guess how movies such as Spring Breakers, The Power of the Dog, Longlegs, and Megalopolis end.Earlier, the boys encounter an interesting film in their opening segment. As they try to imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Melvyn Douglas's role in the Paul Newman flick Hud, they realize that this movie is simply the Manchester by the Sea of its time. In the process, they discover a quirk in their rating system and learn that good and bad are both equally punished by the inevitable misery of life. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're kicking off our “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss the one that started it all, 2001's The Fast and the Furious!Limp Bizkit! Ja Rule! Cheesy lines! Chunky boots that would make Guy Fieri jealous! A fittingly quick and entertaining pace! Recognizable Los Angeles locations! Questionable car talk! Exciting new home video technology! Legally purchased DVD players! Overheated manifolds! Reckless contempt for carpooling! Shockingly organized crowds of young, illegal street racers! A guy playing guitar at a party! Product placement for Pizza Hut, Corona, and most-notably, the nitrous oxide brand NOS! A great high-speed heist to open the movie and plenty of (mostly) real stunts and action! Occasional surreal, anime-influenced racing scenes years before the Speed Racer movie came out! A versatile cast of young actors on the verge of stardom, including Vin Diesel with a rare shred of humility, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez laying the foundation for one of cinema's most iconic female action heroes, and Matt Schulze making the most of his very punchable face! A 2001 time capsule which may have borrowed heavily from Point Break, but still has great chemistry between the two leads with some impressive world building and story mechanics, and would surprisingly go on to become one of the biggest and most influential action franchises in movie history! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Spring Breakers, The Beekeeper, Lucio Fulci's dance-themed giallo Murder Rock, and Sam Raimi's return to horror, Send Help! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. The season finale of our Rise of A24 series starts at the beginning, Harmony Korine's neon maximalist Spring Breakers (2013) as well as his first big break as the writer of Kids (1995).Problematic doesn't begin to describe the mid 1990s molotov cocktail of Kids. Harmony Korine was a skateboard kid in New York City when the nearly 50 year old Larry Clark discovered him. However improbable, a partnership sparked and they were able to pull off this cinéma véritésque screed. Bracketing out the more improprietous and probably illegal aspects of the partnership between Korine and Clark, the film depicts a dystopian kaleidoscope of violence, sex, and teenage anarchy. Most of this piercing honesty came from Korine, but Clark definitely helped to make sure that dogmatic authenticity was captured on celluloid, for better or worse. It is hard to imagine the chic iconoclasts of A24 even considering distribution for Kids. It is much too raw, even for them. Thus we got Spring Breakers in 2013 from Korine as a director. Style over substance is a badge of honor for Harmony. The vibe here is vibz. The four young ladies at the center of the story are mere playthings for Korine's blissed out polemic against some mirage of Americanism. This is perhaps the paradigm of A24 films: stylemaxxing with ponderous writing, an infinity pool of depth. While A24 has distributed and produced great films, their reputation was solidified early on with Spring Breakers, a provocative and vaccous montage. As A24 is now attempting to become a mid-major studio, it is startling to look back at their beginnings. For at least half a decade in the mid 2010s, it seemed as those A24 was forging a new path in filmmaking: the high commerce of high art. Alas they could not contain themselves as their creative courage begat commercial victory. Nowadays, they seem a bit like the trust fund kid who went to Sarah Lawrence, a bit eccentric, but bourgeoise all the same.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Crossroads: "The legendary Ms. Britney Spears." It's hard to describe just how famous Britney Spears was in the early 2000s. Before social media, fame was a different machine and nowhere is that more clear than in Crossroads. Filled with everything ACOFAE loves, Crossroads is especially great at showing female friendships throughout the ups and downs of growing up. Yearning for a third place, Crossroads finds three friends going on a roadtrip to audition for a record label. A time, a place, a vibe. Along the way are shenanigans that bond and little side quests that let the other characters shine. A movie that could only be made when it was, Crossroads shows us a mega star at her peak, marketing at it's peak, and one of the last true girlhood movies of the early 2000's. By the ocean. The A24 Rocks crew looks back at the first feature film Harmony Korine directed, the controversial Criterion classic Gummo. Korine directed one of the most famous A24 films in Spring Breakers, so these film reviewers wondered what kind of filmmaking themes Korine established early in his career. And to say the least, controversy was always in his wheelhouse. Gummo is a non-linear story about Xenia, Ohio, a tornado ravaged town with two boys named Solomon and Tummler hunting cats for money. It was also the third film for Chloe Sevigny, who has acted in many other indie gems in her career. How has Gummo aged after all these years? Caution: movie spoilers. The 1st A24 major motion picture. I am sure this will have deep meaning and great insight of society.
A24 has solidified itself as the "indie darling" of film studios, gaining a sizable cohort of devotees (many of them young) who rep the studio's merch like fans of a rock band. Started in 2012, A24 made a name itself by releasing smaller art-house and art-house adjacent films in a time when the mid-size movie was quickly being shuffled from theaters to streaming. Some of the studio's early successes include Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, and Robert Eggers’ The Witch. The latter being a prime example of A24's unique business model: mid-budget movie gets a mid-size release with some edgy, digital-first marketing to turn a mid-size profit. But, as A24 has grown, so has its movies' budgets. We probably won't see an A24 Superman anytime soon, but the studio’s more recent in-house productions and festival acquisitions show a trend away from the indie films that helped set it apart. Today on FilmWeek, Larry speaks with culture editor for the New Yorker, Alex Barasch, about the rise and evolution of A24. With a catalog full of art house favorites like The Witch, Spring Breakers, Moonlight, and Uncut Gems, it's hard to deny that A24 occupies a unique position in the zeitgeist. In a Hollywood landscape that can feel like it's becoming more risk-averse by the year — see our recent episode with Andrew Dewaard on his book Derivative Media — the artist-forward distributor and studio has become synonymous with a dream that, to many American cultural producers, feels increasingly remote: the conviction that one can doggedly put quality art out into the marketplace and see it actually succeed. But is A24 singlehandedly saving American cinema, or is that just a carefully crafted illusion, more a testament to the importance of smart brand positioning than to the actual quality of the films in its catalog? We brought on the Las Vegas-based writer and critic Nicholas Russell, author of an excellent essay for Dirt called “The Popular Alternative: the State of A24,” to discuss how the company evolved from an upstart indie film distributor to a studio and lifestyle brand in the mold of Disney — albeit one for adults who pride themselves in being savvy cultural consumers. We talk about how the company successfully commodified the idea of being “a cinephile,” the similarities between the A24 cap and the New York tote, and what Nicholas describes as the longstanding “tension between A24 the studio and A24 the startup” — one recently complicated by a $100 million cash injection from Josh Kushner's Thrive Capital, a major investor in OpenAI. We also try to break down the ineffable A24 “feel” (including the aesthetic elements and political themes the company tends to foreground, and shy away from) and consider the rise of Neon — the distributor behind movies like Parasite, Anora, and How to Blow Up a Pipeline — as the “other popular alternative.”Follow Nicholas on X and SubstackRead more by Nicholas hereRecommended reading about A24 and the Hollywood system from Nicholas:"The Life and Death of Hollywood" by Daniel Bessner (Harpers)"A24's Risky Hollywood Moment" by Felix Gillette (Bloomberg)Hollywood: The Oral History by Jeanine Basinger and Sam Wasson (Harper Collins) This is a public episode.
