Pastor Sean leads us through the Exodus story and explains how God's power is not displayed by delivering us to comfort, but delivering us through challenge. Live Teaching Podcast Scriptures & References Exodus: 5: 1-3Exodus 13:1 7-18Exodus 14: 4-14Exodus 15: 1-5, 19-20“The passage can be read two ways. The first is that what happened was a suspension of the laws of nature. It was a supernatural event. The waters stood, literally, like a wall. The second is that what happened was miraculous not because the laws of nature were suspended. To the contrary, as the computer simulation shows, the exposure of dry land at a particular point in the Red Sea was a natural outcome of the strong east wind. What made it miraculous is that it happened just there, just then, when the Israelites seemed trapped, unable to go forward because of the sea, unable to turn back because of the Egyptian army pursuing them. There is a significant difference between these two interpretations. The first appeals to our sense of wonder. How extraordinary that the laws of nature should be suspended to allow an escaping people to go free. It is a story to appeal to the imagination of a child. But the naturalistic explanation is wondrous at another level entirely. Here the Torah is using the device of irony. What made the Egyptians of the time of Ramses so formidable was the fact that they possessed the latest and most powerful form of military technology, the horse drawn chariot. It made them unbeatable in battle, and fearsome. What happens at the sea is poetic justice of the most exquisite kind. There is only one circumstance in which a group of people traveling by foot can escape a highly trained army of charioteers, namely when the route passes through a muddy sea bed. The people can walk across, but the chariot wheels get stuck in the mud. The Egyptian army can neither advance nor retreat. The wind drops. The water returns. The powerful are now powerless, while the powerless have made their way to freedom.” — Jonathan Sacks, Covenant and ConversationReflection“God is going to lead you, he's not going to force you,” suggests Pastor Sean. Is there a particular place in your life and story where this hits closely for you? Whether facing a critical decision or crossroads, do you trust that God is waiting for you on the other side of it? Practice bringing your tambourine along with you in the coming days, with an attentiveness to name and give thanks for God's blessing and presence as you witness and experience it.

Why are so many of the famous biblical characters missing from the historical record? Forty years ago, the intrepid and dogged researcher Ralph Ellis decided to find out. Does this biblical lacuna mean that both the Old and New Testaments are fictional, as many people have claimed? Or are we simply looking in the wrong locations or perhaps even the wrong eras? The first glimmer of the truth was not hard to see, for even the 1st century Romo-Jewish historian Josephus Flavius claimed that the Israelites were the Hyksos pharaohs of Egypt. In which case the Book of Exodus may well be correct, from a historical context, but both theologians and historians were looking in the wrong era. Upon further investigation it transpired that Josephus was correct: the biblical Hyksos-Israelite Exodus was a real historical event. From this small kernel of truth, the entire biblical epic has now been transformed from mystic mythology into a central component of real secular history. All the way from Genesis to Revelations, this simple but rational reevaluation technique became the foundation for much of Ralph's work. Join me through a fascinating re-visioning of key Biblical events and personages.

Ramses the Great ruled Egypt more than 3,200 years ago, but he made sure we would still be talking about him today. He ruled for 67 years, probably starting on May 31st (III Season of the Harvest, day 27 to ancient Egyptians) in 1279 BC. He soon set about creating a new capital city in the Nile delta, where he had chariot, weapon and shield factories built. Not long thereafter he defeated the Sherden pirates who were seriously harassing sea traders in the Mediterranean, and “won” the Battle of Kadesh against the Hittites in the largest chariot battle ever fought. He also had enormous temples, obelisks and statues erected all over the New Kingdom, and ordered lots of gold objects. Dozens of those objects are on display until February 12 at the de Young Museum in a state-of-the-art exhibit featuring the greatest collection of Ramses objects and Egyptian jewelry ever to travel to the United States. Along with colossal royal sculpture, the exhibit highlights recently discovered animal mummies and treasures from the royal tombs of Dahshur and Tanis. Visitors can also immerse themselves in multimedia productions that re-create moments from Ramses's life or take a virtual tour of Abu Simbel and Nefertari's tomb. The de Young's ancient art curator, Renée Dreyfus, will share with us the stories of some of these art objects and how the de Young organized this outstanding and rare exhibit. Egyptologist Rita Lucarelli will explain the evolution of the funerary beliefs of ancient Egyptian society from their origins in prehistory to the time of Ramses. She will draw on her scholarly work on the Book of the Dead to discuss the magical texts found in royal and elite tombs and how they compare to the "personal piety" or "popular religion" of the Ramesside period, about which there are many sources to draw upon from that well-documented society. Among those documents is the earliest known peace treaty in world history—between Ramses II and Hattušili III, the Hittite king. It was recorded in two versions―one in Egyptian hieroglyphs and the other in Hittite using a cuneiform script. The two versions are nearly identical, but in the Hittite version the Egyptians are the ones who sue for peace, while in the Egyptian version the Hittites are the ones who sue for peace. Some things never change. Patron of the podcast Seanbob sent in this question for Murray to mull over, 'what is up with foreskin collection? I know Ramses wrote on walls about the stacks of foreskins he collected from the sea peoples, and David bought his wife with foreskins (1 Samuel 18:27). So what is the deal? Was circumcisions popular in some cultures and not others? Why not the whole penis? What did they do with them after they stacked them? Some sort of trophy? Like a deer rack on your Grandpa's wall? It is one thing to like dicks, it is strange to collect foreskins. What is the deal?' Join us on Patron patreon.com/ancientwarfarepodcast
Today's podcast starts off in the year 1175 BC, where the legendary Pharaoh Ramses III was readying himself for battle against one of the most mysterious enemies in all of human history. Ramses was literally fighting for the survival of his kingdom, and for all Egyptian civilization. And fortunately for Egypt, he won. But it came at a great price. Ramses' treasury was depleted from costly battles (not to mention the vast numbers of expensive monuments and temples that he built). And so to make ends meet, he did what any politician would do-- he raised taxes. The ancient Egyptians were legendary record keepers; we have detailed accounts of their commercial activities, financial transactions, and even tax receipts. And we can easily observe the trajectory of Ramses' economic frustration: tax receipts were declining, evasion was becoming rampant, and production continued to decline. It's ironic that, even though Ramses III saved his civilization from marauding invaders, his dynasty soon collapsed due to economic mismanagement. This is an important lesson that politicians have to relearn over and over again: taxation is a huge disincentive. Whenever you impose a tax, you get less of it. Policymakers understand this in theory; as Mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg famously imposed a ‘soda tax' on sugary drinks. He knew that imposing such a tax would curb people's behavior and they would purchase less soda. This is also why taxes on cigarettes and alcohol exist; politicians understand very well that people will consume less of something that is heavily taxed. But for some reason, they fail to apply the same logic to productive economic activities. They fail to understand that if you place heavy taxes on capital gains, you'll end up with fewer investments. If you increase corporate tax rates, businesses will leave for lower tax jurisdictions. And if you impose absurd taxes on oil companies… then oil companies won't invest or produce as much. Duh. Yet this seems to be the new rallying cry of the ruling mob; they claim that “war profiteering” oil companies are benefiting from the “windfall of war” and generating “excess profits”. And their solution, naturally, is an ‘excess profits' tax. There is actually precedent for this. The US government started passing excess profits tax as early as 1916. And it still ranks as one of the most complex, bureaucratic, incomprehensible taxes in history. Trust me, if you think your taxes are complicated now, try being a US company during World War I. They rolled it out again during World War II, charging a tax as high as 95% on ‘excess profits'. Obviously the concept of ‘excess profits' raises a number of questions: ‘excess' according to whom? But naturally the people who come up with these ideas have no understanding of business of finance. A few months ago, for example, the President of the United States was whining about Exxon-Mobil's profitability, and he proclaimed: “We're going to make sure that everybody knows Exxon's profits.” Now I know the guy is a bit slow and doesn't usually know where he is half the time. But apparently he doesn't even realize that Exxon is a public company, i.e. Exxon's profits aren't some closely guarded secret. They HAVE to report their profits. Exxon already makes sure that everybody knows Exxon's profits… Yet even the most basic understanding of capital markets and financial reporting remains elusive to the people who set economic policy. Now there's obviously an election next week, so I'm not terribly concerned about an Excess Profits tax becoming reality. But here's something they could (and would) probably do. There's a rather obscure tax called the Accumulated Profits Tax that's already on the books. This is a tax that corporations are supposed to pay if they hold ‘excess' (there's that word again) cash profits. This tax is rarely enforced. But that's more of a policy choice than anything...

On this week's episode we have Texas Attorney General Democratic Nominee Rochelle Garza on to talk about what is on the ballot and why this midterm 2022 election is important not only nationwide but also right here in the state of Texas. Rochelle Garza is a civil rights attorney and 5th generation Texan from the Rio Grande Valley. Her parents met as public school teachers and together taught Rochelle to have faith, work hard, and that every person is deserving of dignity and respect. Rochelle became a lawyer for the people and has legal expertise in immigration, family, criminal and constitutional law — fighting for children, immigrants and our most vulnerable. In a landmark case which received national attention, Rochelle took on Donald Trump, Ken Paxton, and Brett Kavanaugh when they tried to prevent an immigrant teen, Jane Doe, from exercising her right to choose — and won. This case resulted in the reinforcement of reproductive rights across the country with the implementation of the “Garza Notice,” named after Rochelle, which mandates the federal government notify teens in immigration detention of their constitutional right to access abortion care without obstruction or fear of retaliation. As Attorney General, Rochelle will fight for all Texans. Rochelle graduated from the University of Houston Law Center and from Brown University with honors. Rochelle and Adam, her husband, live in Brownsville with their newborn daughter and their dog, Ramses. BONUS EPISODES & PREMIUM ACCESS: https://auxoro.supercast.com/ On this episode of The AUXORO Podcast, Zach and Mohammed dive into the greatest mysteries that remain unexplained to this day about the pyramids, the role that the afterlife played in the life of ancient civilizations, and whether or not the Ancient Egyptians got help from an extraterrestrial source. **Note: This episode was originally scheduled to be between 2 and 3 hours, but because of connection issues (Mohammed is based in Cairo) the podcast was cut short around the 80 min mark. I was still extremely captivated by the conversation we managed to have before the connection cut out and I have a gut instinct you'll feel the same way. Enjoy!** Guest Bio: Mohammed Aly is a licensed Egyptologist and tour guide based in Cairo, Egypt. I was so blown away by Mohammed's tour that I had to have him on the podcast.
