The nineteenth-century spread of democracy in Britain and its colonies coincided with an increase in alcohol consumption and in celebratory public dinners with rounds of toasts. British colonists raised their glasses to salute the Crown in rituals that asserted fraternal equality and political authority. Yet these ceremonies were reserved for gentlemen, leaving others – notably women and Indigenous people – on the political margins. Drink and Democracy: Alcohol and the Political Imaginary in Colonial Australia (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2025) by Dr. Matthew Allen traces the development of democratic ideas in New South Wales through the history of public drinking and temperance. As the colony transformed from a convict autocracy to a liberal democracy, Dr. Allen argues, public drinking practices shaped the character of the emerging political order. The ritual of toasting was a symbolic display of restraint – drunkenness without loss of self-control – that embodied the claim to citizenship of white male settlers. Yet the performative sobriety of the temperance movement was also democratic, a display of respectability that politicized its supporters around a rival vision of responsible citizenship. Drink was a way to police the limits of the political realm. The stigma of female drunkenness worked to exclude women from the public sphere, while perceptions of heavy drinking among Aboriginal people cast them as lacking self-control and hence unworthy of political rights. Drink and Democracy reveals that long before the introduction of the franchise, colonists in Australia imagined themselves as citizens. Yet even as democracy expanded, drink marked its limits. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Episode 183: The Younger Dryas - Water Show NotesSummary: Around 12,900 years ago, the Earth experienced a cooling period known as the Younger Dryas. This cooling led to widespread flooding, which some experts speculate may have been global. One theory suggests that the flooding was caused by an impact event that melted large ice sheets and triggered the cooling period. However, this theory is only sometimes accepted. We will explore if there is any evidence of such an event in the Bible and if it is related to the flood of Noah or something else. We continue our series that explores the possibility that the Younger Dryas resulted from a pre-Adamic flood. This episode Is brought to you by the following Bible Mysteries Podcast Premium Subscribers or Seekers:Mary Ann Saluri, Pawel Lebioda, Alicia Melendez, Lydia Roop, Matthew Allen, and Aaron WolfeScriptures:All Scripture references are from the King James Version of the Bible. This was the source of the waters in Genesis 1:2, and there is every reason to believe this was a flood upon the ungodly world of the angelic rebellion before Adam was created. The Younger Dryas was very possibly the flood of Genesis 1:2, which came from God out of the third heaven. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 9, 2023 is: auspicious aw-SPISH-us adjective Something described as auspicious is full of promise, showing or suggesting that future success or good results are likely. Auspicious can also mean “attended by good fortune.” // The young musician's auspicious debut album reveals her songwriting as already more accomplished than that of artists twice her age and stature. // The high school gymnast had quite the auspicious year, taking gold or silver in nearly every competition. See the entry > Examples: “[Bassist, Ron] Carter turned 85 on May 4. To celebrate the milestone, he held a concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, performing with three different ensembles. … An elegant man of demure stature, Carter couldn't have picked a more appropriate venue for this auspicious occasion than Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. From the first song of the night with his Golden Striker Trio, it was evident that the audience had come not just for jazz, but for Black American classical music.” — Matthew Allen, TheGrio.com, 11 May 2022 Did you know? Some word knowledge to crow about in your next tweetstorm: auspicious comes from Latin auspex, which literally means “bird seer” (from the words avis, meaning “bird,” and specere, meaning “to look at”). In ancient Rome, these “bird seers” were priests or augurs who studied the flight and feeding patterns of birds, then delivered prophecies based on their observations. The right combination of bird behavior indicated favorable conditions, but the wrong patterns spelled trouble. The English noun auspice, which originally referred to this practice of observing birds to discover omens, also comes from Latin auspex. Today, the plural form auspices is often used with the meaning “kindly support and guidance.”
Matthew Allen, a leadership marketing coach, sat down with Sarah to talk about a disruption that he created because he felt the call to bicycle across America. The identity he discovered afterward, led him from a career in civil engineering in NYC to becoming a CrossFit coach and moving to Colorado. When disruption came next in the form of a pandemic, he found a new identity and calling to teach marketing to online coaches. Turns out, he's pretty good at that, too. This is it! After dozens of games and hundreds of hours of gameplay, we've arrived at the VERY LAST GAME in the Wii U catalog! To celebrate this momentous event, we had to bring in some of our favorite guests for one of the most influential games of the last decade! The entire Vidjagame Apocalypse crew (Matthew Allen, Chris Antista, and Mikel Reparaz) join us to talk LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD. This game dropped day-and-date with the release of the Switch, so the Wii U version tends to be overlooked, but it can't be denied that this game forever changed how we think about ZELDA and reinvented how we approach open-world games. Join us as we dig in to this massive adventure, and be sure to come back next week for our FOUR-HOUR final episode spectacular! Who doesn't like to hear a villain sing about themselves and their evil plans? It's a time-honored tradition, dating back to some really old thing or other, but it's a more recent phenomenon in video games. So this week, special guests Alaina Yee and Matthew Allen join to help us count down five - count 'em, five! - of our favorite singing bad guys.
