Adam Wasserman is an attorney and managing partner of Education Justice Law Group who specializes in helping children with special needs and parents of those children receive the extra attention in school that they are legally entitled to. On the episode, we talk about ADD and ADHD in young people, and schools suggesting to parents to medicate their children – which he says should never happen. “If schools are recommending that your child needs medication, what that really means is the child’s not getting the services they’re supposed to be getting at the school,” he said. Wasserman says he also took this kind of medication growing up and credits a lot of his success in life to it. He points out, however, that parents should never go to a meeting at a school and have the school talk about medication. “The choice to take medicine is a very private choice. It’s a family choice, and it should be done after careful consultation with people trained in the field to do that," Wasserman said. "Here’s the thing, schools are not allowed to diagnose children with anything. That’s the wrong word. School’s talk in terms of eligibility, meaning, ‘This child reads too slow. He’s eligible to get reading help.’ Not, ‘This child reads too slow. There’s a problem with his brain.’” Wasserman’s Education Justice Law Group covers all of California and represents children and young adults from age 3 through high school who are eligible for special education. In the episode, we also discuss the difference between IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) and 504 Plans. He says he founded the law group when he realized many students were not accessing their educational rights they have under state and federal law. How do we take an institution ... that is designed to collect sensitive material and incorporate everything else that is out there [-- Journalism, social media, academic literature, etc.]? WAR ROOM welcomes Adam Wasserman, a former political analyst from the Central Intelligence Agency to discuss the particular challenges of conducting strategic intelligence analysis in today's environment. For example, historically the intelligence community organized and functioned to pursue an adversary's inner secrets, but now must apply its resources to combing through all the open source information in the environment, as though looking for all the needles in the haystack. How does such change affect the timely and relevant provision of quality analysis to national leaders? U.S. Army War College resident student Chris Todd moderates, and the Intelligence series editor Genevieve Lester provides the introduction. Adam Wasserman is a retired political analyst from the Central Intelligence Agency and former faculty member of the U.S. Air War College. Chris Todd is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and a student of the U.S. Army War College resident class of 2018. Adam Wasserman is a Flywheel Sports Lead & Master Instructor in New York City. We first met wayyy back in the late-90s at the University of Rhode Island where we attended the theatre program together as acting majors. Many moons went by and both of us took very different paths in our lives before we linked up again. But after years of pursuing our dreams, moving around the country, following the never-ending pull to grow, and becoming very different men than when we met, Adam and I fell right back into line as friends. Adam and his dog Bella were kind enough to let me crash at their place for a few days when I was wrapping up a course in New York. I was super fortunate when he agreed to be a guest. We chatted about panic attacks, taking responsibilities for our actions, adoption, knowing when to ask for help, and of course he answered Five Questions. Meet Adam.
