Eure Marion & Euer Manuel!

How to Nurture a Healthy Vaginal Microbiome

The vaginal microbiome is often mentioned in passing - sort of as an afterthought - usually when we're really talking about the gut microbiome. We've decided to give the vaginal microbiome centre stage today, and with good reason - it's a huge factor when it comes to the quality of a woman's life and health, and has implications for fertility, pregnancy and childbirth, and risks associated with sexually transmitted infections.  On this podcast, NBT Scientific Director and Coach Megan Hall and I are discussing the vaginal microbiome: what it is, how to assess for problems, and how to maintain a state of good health. Megan talks about the effects of vaginal dysbiosis on pregnancy and fertility, and how to create the best possible outcome for childbirth. She explains what causes disruption to the vaginal microbiome in the first place, and how ancestral health principles can keep you on track. She also outlines how to rebalance the vaginal microbiome when there's dysbiosis, along with practical steps to take before resorting to antibiotics and antifungals. Here's the outline of this interview with Megan Hall: [00:02:30] Why care about the vaginal microbiota? [00:03:55] Megan's outline for this podcast. [00:04:50] What is the vaginal microbiome (VM)? Kristen Carbone had always wanted to work in an art museum, but after landing her dream museum job she soon faced a harrowing reality: her mother's breast cancer had returned with a serious metastasis. Packing up her life, Carbone moved to Baltimore to be closer to her ailing mother. Heartbreakingly, her mother passed before turning 50. After her mother's death, Carbone uprooted herself again and continued her museum work. But just three months after her 30th birthday, Carbone herself was diagnosed with breast cancer. She made the brave and terrifying decision to have a preventative mastectomy and reconstruction. “I felt really committed to the choice,” she says. As she learned to live in her new body, however, she experienced first-hand the challenges that many women face after treatment. Carbone reached out to hundreds of women experiencing the same issue before founding Brilliantly, a lifestyle brand whose programs and products are designed to support women living in post-mastectomy bodies. In this episode of Reinvent Yourself, Carbone talks with CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour about how cancer radically changed her life and inspired her to make an impact on the lives of other survivors.

Folge 4: "I'll Be Fine". Logisch, dass Oma Evelyn endlich ihren Führerschein machen will… In allen fünf Folgen der Serie: Tim Oliver Schultz (Pepe), Daniel Zillmann (Anton), Bendix Hansen (Pepe als Kind), Felix Lengenfelder (Anton als Kind), Steffi Kühnert (Astrid), Gabriela Maria Schmeide (Elke), Barbara Nüsse (Evelyn), Thorsten Merten (Herr Braunert), Bernd Boßmann (Bernd), Heiko Pinkowski (Kalcek). Sowie in Folge 4: Jasna Fritzi Bauer (Johnny), Veit Stübner (Herr Manfraß), Tom Lass (Eddi Raschke), Bernhard Gaffke (Dr. Storm), Gayle Tufts (Gretchen Muller), Annett Ranisch (Ärztin), Franziska, Paula und Ingo Zacher sowie Lea Kubach (Anrufer bei "Radio Neurosia"). This conversation with Marjorie Gloff, MD and Renee Robinson, DNP, APRN makes me convinced that the expression "Preparation is half the battle won" must have been coined with the idea of perioperative medicine and perioperative surgical home (PSH) in mind!  They are the co-directors of the Center for Perioperative Medicine and Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. In this episode, they share how to desilo the care of pediatric patients especially around the perioperative period, how an informal conversation triggered a grassroots level effort which subsequently resulted in a well-organized multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive, coordinated and team based care for children in need of surgical procedures, developed a comprehensive screening tool or the PSH. They also share the steps involved in the development of periop medicine and PSH programs that employs a biopsychosocial model to optimize systems and individualized best practices in the care of a complex child with multiple and/or complex needs. Takeaways In This Episode What perioperative medicine entails and how it fits into their roles Healthcare professionals that form their perioperative surgical home-based team The minimum elements of perioperative surgical home that can be incorporated by anyone in any setting to provide optimal perioperative outcomes Components of a perioperative surgical home Objective criteria to determine if a child patient's optimized health Diagnoses and procedures that lend themselves to this kind of care model How they determine what role each member of their team plays Elements  of their program and the steps they took to develop their program and educate their fellow peers Why should a PSH model be considered and the expenses related to such a program Standardization vs. individualized care in perioperative medicine Distinction between PSH, perioperative medicine and Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) models.  Links Other Related Episode(s) - Episode 58. Using Lab Tests to Diagnose and Improve the Healthcare System– Dr. Brian Caveney, Chief Medical Officer at Labcorp

A fascination with data drew Dr. Brian Caveney to Labcorp, a lab testing and research company which has processed more than 50 million COVID-19 tests and runs more than half a billion medical tests per year around the world. For Caveney, all of that data provides opportunities for insights into how the healthcare industry can improve. As Chief Medical Officer at Labcorp and president of Labcorp Diagnostics, Caveney considers how labs can better analyze their findings, and how to best frame and communicate these findings to healthcare workers and the public. That's a particularly urgent task in light of the COVID-19 crises, and an attendant crisis of public confidence in the medical profession. “The lab is often in the shadows of medicine, and may go back in that regard after COVID is over,” Caveney tells host Dr. Rishi Desai. But he hopes healthcare providers retain a deeper appreciation for how, if used intentionally, lab tests can bolster patient understanding and trust. Tune in to hear why political meddling at the CDC was so dangerous, the difference between law school and medical school, and how Labcorp managed huge demand for tests amid a fractured global supply chain.
