Diane Holt and Will Leitch meet two of the people working at the heart of reconciliation and peace building in Northern Ireland. Both provide support and services to victims and others affected in the years of conflict, but in subtly different ways. Kenny Donaldson works with SEFF, the South East Fermanagh Foundation. Alan McBride works with the Wave Trauma Centre based in Belfast. He's perhaps better-known as the man who lost his wife in the Shankill Bombing 30 years ago.In this edition both men tell Diane and Will why they are inspired to do what they do, and why their Christian faith is inevitably a part of that.Produced for Thrive IrelandMade by Commission Christian RadioIn association with The Northern Ireland Community Relations Council
We are all PalestiniansAs I write this week's column all of the scéal coming from the Israeli government and its international allies indicate that a ground invasion of Gaza is imminent. It will, according to some be a ‘surgical strike against Hamas'. From British government Ministers, to political pundits, to international allies of the Israeli government, to Israeli spokespersons the aim – they say - is to destroy Hamas. It's all nonsense of course. The reality is that Israel can no more destroy Hamas than Hamas can destroy Israel.Peacemakers30 years ago on Monday an IRA bomb exploded on the Shankill Road killing nine people and IRA Volunteer Thomas Begley. It was a shocking event compounded a week later when eight people were shot dead in Greysteel. These were two of many atrocities which occurred during a quarter century of conflict in the North. Their impact on families and communities reverberates still today, as do the more than 3,000 other deaths and the thousands of injuries that resulted from those desperate years. The families of the dead and the injured have lived with the consequences ever since. Today we are in a much better place. Not least because many of those who suffered directly from the violence became peacemakers. Citizens willing to step beyond their own personal tragedies and provide support and comfort to the bereaved and injured and to become advocates for peace and for justice. We are mindful of their loss and grateful for their courage and dedication in breaking down barriers. Alan McBride - who lost his wife Sharon and her father Desmond in the IRA bomb - is one such person. He is an example to the rest of us, including this columnist. 30 years ago Alan McBride lost his wife Sharon when she was killed in the IRA bombing of Frizzell's fish shop on the Shankill Road. Since then he has been engaged with rearing their daughter, peace-building and is a director of the WAVE Trauma Centre in Belfast

Borderlands is a monthly event where we create a warm hearted space in a Belfast pub for music and reflection on the most pressing issues facing our societies today. The conversation is led by the voices of musicians, activists, civic leaders and artists. This was our Advent event where our theme was Hope. Alan McBride works to advocate for those who lost loved ones in the Troubles in Northern Ireland. His own wife was killed in the Shankill bomb in 1993. He spoke about a book he is compiling about grassroots redemptive stories that emerged from the horror of the Troubles. Denise Bradley works for Corrymeela in the area of Marginalisation. She works with refugee communities and advocates for the victims of Gender Based Violence. Music is from Andy McClenaghan who plays a couple of songs he has written for Borderlands. Also we have two members of Na Leanaí, Fra Sands and Sorcha Turnbull playing some trad tunes and seasonal songs. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into a brave space for sacred stories. Borderlands is an event run by a small collective. Guardians Of The Flame works to record these kinds of voices and events and uses the audio skill of Fra Sands and the filming and editing skills of Josh Eaves.

EPISODE SUMMARY ‘My coping mechanism is talking, seeking peace and reconciliation’ Alan McBride’s personal journey is well known, but remarkable nonetheless. It was in 1993 that his wife Sharon and her father Desmond Frizzell were killed in an IRA bomb attack on the family fish shop in Belfast’s Shankill Road. But with immense dignity, Alan has since dedicated his life to reconciliation and progress, as well as campaigning on behalf of victims. He is the latest interviewee in the Holywell Trust Forward Together podcasts. LISTEN ON FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW
Jonny and Jenn Clark and their friends Dave and Jill Hines run a monthly event in Belfast called Borderlands. Held in a pub it is a space where faith and doubt meet, where songs and stories become sacred liturgies and where a spiritual home is created outside the walls of traditional churches. It is for Protestants and Catholics, for those with faith and those searching and unsure what they believe. This episode includes an interview with Alan McBride who is an activist for peace and reconciliation, and whose wife was killed in the 1993 Shankill Road bomb. It also includes stories from Paul Hutchinson, a well known poet and story-teller and former centre director of the Corrymeela community. Jenn Clark shares a reflection on the Advent theme of waiting, and there are two beautiful old songs that are heard in homes up and down the country at this time of year. This is heart warming, soul stirring stories and reflections that will give you hope this Christmas. It was recorded on the 11th December, the day before the UK elections.

A leadership vacuum is causing harm across Northern Ireland, including in loyalist areas, and contributes to the lure of paramilitaries, warns victims’ campaigner Alan McBride in the latest Forward Together podcast. “I think we probably need to put a lot of investment into areas like East Belfast and the Shankill and other areas to try and improve the leadership potential,” he argues. Alan adds: “As a grassroots working class Protestant loyalist myself, I have a real feel for that community. I don't always think that they're best served by the sort of spokespeople that they put forward at this moment. So I would like to see other voices - voices that perhaps we haven't heard yet.” Listen to an insightful interview with Alan that takes a positive look at challenges facing Northern Ireland society.

What role should the churches in Northern Ireland be playing now that peace has come to the Province? More than any other organisations, they should know the meaning of compassion, truth, mercy and forgiveness but are they providing enough leadership in these areas and what have they done to facilitate community cohesion since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement twenty years ago on the 10th April 1998? Joining Ernie Rea are the Rev Norman Hamilton, former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland and Father Martin Magill, the parish priest at St John's on the Falls Road. Also in the discussion is Dr Gladys Ganiel, Research Fellow of the George Mitchell for Global Peace at Queens University Belfast, an expert in conflict transformation. Ernie will also be talking to Alan McBride who lost his wife in the Shankill Road Bombing. Producer: Helen Lee Series producer: Amanda Hancox.
