South East Technological University (SETU) is proud to announce that Dr Laurence Fitzhenry, Principal Investigator of the Ocular Therapeutics Research Group (OTRG) in the PMBRC, and Research Group Manager Tess Ames have secured the prestigious INNOVISION COFUND, a €3.1 million collaborative research programme focused on addressing the global challenges of ocular disease and sight loss. This achievement marks a major milestone, with SETU becoming the first Technological University in Ireland to coordinate a Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND programme. Vision impairment is a major and growing global health challenge impacting the quality of life, and overall health of billions of people worldwide. It also places a significant economic burden on individuals, healthcare systems, and societies at large. INNOVISION will tackle this problem across disciplines, departments, and around the world, enabling researchers to take holistic approaches to this problem. "This is a global health crisis that demands urgent, innovative solutions to preserve quality of life for millions. By putting those living with ocular disease at the forefront of research, INNOVISION gives us the opportunity to really address this crisis." Dr Fitzhenry stated. INNOVISION brings together a world-class network of partners, including the University of Iceland and Experimentica (Finland) to recruit highly qualified postdoctoral researchers to tackle the growing concern of ocular disease. Additional collaborators span the globe, notably McMaster University (Canada) and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (USA), and patient advocacy organisations Fighting Blindness (Ireland) and the Dry Eye Foundation (USA). Additional network partners include University College Dublin, Queens University Belfast, University of Birmingham, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Loyola University Chicago, Rowan University, and industry leaders including Bausch+Lomb, SiriusXT, OcuDel, and OcuMedic. Professor Veronica Campbell, SETU President commented, "We are delighted to launch INNOVISION and work with outstanding global partners to tackle this critical challenge. This initiative not only provides a unique opportunity for researchers and industry alike to make a real difference in people's lives, but it demonstrates that SETU and Ireland's South East are a driver of innovative, impactful, and creative research. We are especially pleased to see such strong engagement from industry partners, whose involvement will help ensure that research outcomes translate into real-world solutions for people living with vision impairment." Over the course of the programme, INNOVISION will recruit 12 experienced postdoctoral researchers to work across this global network. These researchers will embark on cutting-edge projects exploring a wide range of topics, including drug delivery, drug discovery, and novel therapeutic approaches to combat vision impairment and blindness. "Industry involvement is a vital part of INNOVISION's mission. We want to continue to grow the network over the next five years, expanding the potential for impact and real-world benefits", says Programme Manager Tess Ames. Companies or other research organisations interested in contributing to or collaborating with the programme are encouraged to reach out to Tess at tess.ames@setu.ie for more information on how to get involved. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND scheme (Grant Agreement No. 101217199). In this special episode, Dr James Mannion and The Real David Cameron take a look at the education systems in the four nations of the United Kingdom and ask: what can we learn from one another? Graham Donaldson has been central to development in Scotland as chief inspector, advising government as well as leading on quality assurance. And remarkably he has also been central to the development of Curriculum for Wales in the role of chief adviser to the Welsh Government. Tony Gallagher, from Queens University Belfast, has made a massive contribution to education in Northern Ireland and internationally. He is best known for his work on education in divided societies, a subject that, sadly, continues to be of vital importance. Lena Carter is the headteacher of two schools in Scotland, Glassary and Tayvallich, in Argyll and Bute, a challenge that Lena embraces with real energy, passion and a tremendous commitment to meeting every pupil's needs. And Lucy Kirkham teaches geography at Bassaleg Comprehensive school near Newport in Wales. Lucy has a considerable track record in Environmental Education and has been a real driving force behind a series of conferences where young people can engage with the climate emergency on their terms. He works mainly with grassroots political, trade union, artist, and community groups, exploring the dynamics of theory and action for societal change In this interview he discusses his new edited collection of the early writings of James Connolly. The Lost and Early Writings of James Connolly, 1889-1898 (Iskra Books, 2024) unveils the formative years of one of the 20th century's most influential socialist thinkers and revolutionary leaders. In this groundbreaking collection, historian Conor McCabe brings together Connolly's earliest articles, letters, and speeches, many of which have remained unpublished or inaccessible for over a century. These writings offer a rare glimpse into Connolly's evolving political thought as he navigated the fight for workers' rights, socialism, and Irish independence. Through his sharp critiques of capitalism and imperialism, Connolly laid the intellectual groundwork for the radical movements that would later define his legacy. This collection not only captures Connolly's intellectual rigor but also his deep personal commitment to the working class and the oppressed. From his early involvement in Scottish socialist circles to his growing leadership in Ireland, Connolly's writings reveal a thinker who was as much a man of action as of theory. His early works show the seeds of what would become his revolutionary strategy—a blend of Marxist analysis, Irish republicanism, and a fierce advocacy for international solidarity. Menopausal women are the fastest-growing demographic in the UK workforce, yet a 2022 survey by the Fawcett Society found one in ten women leave work due to their menopause symptoms. This week, Dr Louise is joined by Oonagh Ferson, who researched the experiences of perimenopausal and menopausal women in the workplace as part of her MSc in HR management at Queens University Belfast. Oonagh shares her research findings and some of the stories of women she interviewed, and with Dr Louise discusses the impact of perimenopause, menopause and other conditions such as PMS and PMDD in the workplace. Oonagh offers advice on how women can thrive at work, including the three things she believes would make the biggest difference to women in the workplace: A bottom up approach, where employers sit down with women and ask them: what would help you? What can we do? Even though it may be difficult at times, advocate for yourself: be open with your employer to secure the support or adjustments you need  Having open discussions, using clear language and avoiding terms like ‘the change', can help dispel the stigma around menopause   There is a chapter dedicated to menopause and the workplace in Dr Louise's bestselling book, The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause. In February 2024, Michelle O'Neill assumed the position of first minister of Northern Ireland, making her the first person of an Irish-identifying, Catholic background to hold this most high-profile post in the devolved government. And yet, the difficulty O'Neill faced when trying to take her seat at Stormont highlighted the fact that, for a minority in the territory, Catholic nationalist are not seen as having a legitimate role in Northern Ireland's society. In this episode we look at the phenomenon of "uppity" Catholics - people who have been perceived to rise too far above their station, and who have thereby become targets for abuse and even violence. We speak to Pr Colin Harvey from the Human Rights Centre at Queens University Belfast about becoming a political target in the wake of Brexit, and we hear from Irish Times journalist and Author Martin Doyle about growing up in an aspirational Catholic family during the Troubles whose successes in local business fostered dark resentments in the local community ... Martin Doyle's award-wining memoir, Dirty Linen, was published by the Irish Academic Press in 2023, and can be purchased here. Last month, Catherine, Princess of Wales shared she'd been diagnosed with cancer. Describing this news as ‘a huge shock' and at age just 42, the Princess' disease falls into a category known as “early-onset cancer” – when the disease affects those under 50. While cases in this age group are still rare, diagnosis rates over the past few years have been growing. And scientists are now on a mission to figure out why. Receiving a cancer diagnosis at any age is devastating, but younger people living with the disease face additional challenges. James Gallagher talks to Emma Campbell, a mum of three young children who was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 36. Emma shares not just how her treatment affected her life, but the difficulties in advocating for herself as a younger person trying to get diagnosed. Professor Helen Coleman, cancer epidemiologist for Queens University Belfast, has been studying these diagnostic rates in younger people and explains possible reasons why more people like Emma are finding themselves living with the disease. A series of videos recently went viral on social media from women claiming their weight loss drugs got them pregnant. These drugs – like Ozempic and Wegovy – help people lose weight by suppressing appetite, but could they impact fertility? James speaks to Dr Charlotte Moffett, lecturer in Pharmacology and Molecular Pathology at the University of Ulster, who is studying if these drugs might alter someone's ability to conceive. James is also joined in the studio by GP, Dr Margaret McCartney, who helps him answer some of your questions. We also talk about how passive house certification appears to mitigate risk from radon, the impact of further education (as opposed to academia), and how proper systems design is essential to making even passive houses work properly.Barry earned his doctorate at Queens University Belfast in a piece of academic research of real consequence: comparing the levels of the deadly cancer-causing gas radon in passive houses to other dwellings. Radon, the radioactive gas which kills roughly as many people as road deaths in Ireland, can increase in low-energy buildings. The best way to reduce your risk of dementia is to adapt various aspects of your lifestyle, including eating certain foods, taking regular exercise, not smoking, and maintaining normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Evidence shows that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and cereals, and low in red meat and sugar could help reduce dementia risks. However, nutrition and dietary components are challenging to research with controversies still raging around the role of many micronutrients and health outcomes in dementia, which is why what to eat, what not to eat, how often and how much is constantly in the news. In this ISTAART Research Perspectives Special, Fernando Peres and Dr Clara Domínguez Vivero get two perspectives on diet and nutrition and its connections to cognition and dementia, from the researcher and the person who lives with the disease. This time we are joined by Dr Claire McEvoy, Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Ageing Research at Queens University Belfast. Claire is a Dietitian and Senior Atlantic Fellow at the Global Brain Health Institute. Her research investigates the role of nutrition (particularly plant-based diets) and other lifestyle behaviours in age-related disease, with a special interest in cognitive decline. Her focus is on epidemiologic investigation of diet and dementia risk across the life-course, and the design and evaluation of interventions targeting behaviour change to improve cognitive health and well-being. Our second perspective comes from Dr Daniel Gibbs, Retired Neurologist from Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, USA. Daniel retired in 2013 due to developing Mild Cognitive Impairment due to Alzheimer's disease. The book uncovers an archive of published testimonies by pro- and anti-treaty men and women, written in both English and Irish. Most of the testimonies discussed were produced in the 1920s and 1930s, and nearly all have been overlooked in historical study to date. Revolutionaries went to great lengths to testify to the ‘spiritual wounds' of civil war: they adopted fictionalised disguises, located their writings in other places or periods of time, and found shelter behind pen names. Revolutionaries went to great lengths to testify to the ‘spiritual wounds' of civil war: they adopted fictionalised disguises, located their writings in other places or periods of time, and found shelter behind pen names. This wealth of published testimony reveals that the silence of the Irish Civil War was not necessarily a result of revolutionaries' inability to speak, but rather reflects the unwillingness of official memory makers to listen to the stories of civil war veterans.
