Gary ‘Smickers' Smith was Johnny ‘Mad Dog' Adair's deputy on the Shankill. As a UFF hitman, he was involved in over 20 sectarian murders. Smith lived in exile in Scotland upon his release from the Maze prison. Last year he was convicted of sexual communications with a 12-year-old boy – he narrowly avoided jail. He died at the start of this month aged 60. Ciarán Dunbar is joined by Sunday World Reporter Hugh Jordan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The UVF began the 1970s with a campaign to cleans Catholics and Catholic owned businesses from Protestant dominated areas. With the IRA's campaign at its height, the UVF moved from targeting nationalist and moderate political figures to simple sectarian murder – many of its victims just teenagers. By the mid-70s a notorious group emerged from the UVF which brought the savagery of the troubles to a new level – the Shankill Butchers. Ciarán Dunbar is joined by author and historian Aaron Edwards. Convicted Killer and West Belfast UDA boss Mo Courtney has blamed on trying to extort cash from a local pensioner who runs an online ‘granny bingo'. Loyalist sources say Courtney ‘fined' the organiser of the illegal online game £10,000 and ordered her to pay him £100 per week protection money. Courtney, who denies any links to criminality, accused the woman of “bringing Catholics” onto the Shankill Road in Belfast. Olivia Peden is joined by the Sunday Life's Ciaran Barnes. Hosted on Acast. Today, I'll be speaking with Bill Jermyn. Bill came to Toronto forty years ago having grown up in West Cork and studying at Trinity College Dublin. We speak about a number of topics in our chat including the decision to move him and his family to Toronto, being a Protestant in the Republic of Ireland and the Wider Horizon programme with which Bill worked over the years, helping disadvantaged youths from the Falls Road, Shankill and Tallaght to settle in Canada. To hear more about Bill's pursuits, I would recommend buying his wonderful memoir: Only Dead Fish Swim with the Current; https://www.amazon.ca/Only-Dead-Fish-Swim-Current/dp/1738961907I would still encourage people to download the episodes and to share them with friends and family. Downloads are the easiest indicator for me to gauge how many people I am reaching with these conversations so I would really appreciate it.
Between 1975 and 1982, a blood-thirsty gang of murderers terrorized a section of Northern Ireland. Nearly 30 years later, the Decemberists told the tale on their notable fourth album, The Crane Wife. But did they get the story right? And was it ever theirs to tell at all? We've got the whole story, this week on Lyrics for Lunch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lyricsforlunch/support
SIRO, the ESB and Vodafone joint venture company currently rolling out a €1 billion Gigabit broadband network across Ireland, has announced that its services are now available to 50,000 homes and businesses in Dublin City, and to 100,000 premises overall across the wider Dublin area. The €100 million rollout is part of a strategy to make services powered by SIRO available to areas underserved by fibre to the home broadband. The expansion in the capital follows close collaboration with Dublin City Council's Telecoms Unit and with the broadband officers in the other three Dublin local authorities to advance its Dublin network roll-out. Within Dublin City Council's borders this includes 'new' SIRO areas such as Dublin's Docklands, East Wall, Walkinstown, Kimmage and Crumlin. SIRO's network is already well established in other parts of the city such as Fairview, Raheny, Finglas, Artane or Coolock. This is in addition to SIRO's expanded network footprint across the four Dublin local authority areas, which now encompasses more than 30 suburban towns from Balbriggan in Fingal as far south as Shankill in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. SIRO plans to continue to build across Dublin city and county where other commercial opportunities exist. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste noted: "This is a really positive investment for Dublin, and I am delighted that the City Council have been able to support SIRO in the delivery of this essential digital infrastructure particularly in areas such as East Wall, Docklands. Kimmage and Crumlin. We need to ensure that all of our communities have access to high quality broadband services and are not left behind as the adoption of new technologies and digital services continue to accelerate." SIRO John Keaney Chief Executive Officer, noted: "The presumption that our cities already enjoy universal full fibre connectivity can be inaccurate. Poor broadband can exist in areas of our cities and its suburbs, just as much as it can be found in more remote areas. "Yet, future-proofed and reliable fibre connectivity is key to the economic life of our capital city and in all the communities which make up its constituent parts. "SIRO is rolling out our network across Dublin, city and county, because a real need exists to address existing connectivity blackspots. By now reaching areas underserved by fibre to the home broadband, such as the Docklands, East Wall or Crumlin and Walkinstown, we are striving to ensure these areas have the broadband infrastructure essential for the future wider social and economic development of the city," added Mr. Keaney. Smart City Program Manager at Dublin City Council, Jamie Cudden stated: "Investments like this from SIRO support our ambition to future-proof Dublin ensuring that we can take advantage of new and emerging technology trends. When we established our Telecoms Unit in 2022, we committed to work with the telecoms sector to help streamline and accelerate network rollout through better co-ordination and collaboration. The real winners here are communities across Dublin who will have access to world class digital infrastructure and choice of providers." SIRO is a joint venture between ESB and Vodafone, formed in 2015, to roll out a new full fibre broadband network across Ireland. To date, SIRO has rolled out network to every county in Ireland with its broadband network in over 135 towns and cities and available to almost 550,000 homes and businesses nationwide. The company is on track to reach 700,000 premises by 2026. More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too. Johnny ‘Mad Dog' Adair was behind the murder of many innocent Catholics during the Troubles but his lower Shankill mob, ‘C Company', was also behind two bloody feuds with fellow loyalists.

It's always good to do something a little different, so when I was approached about doing a "live" podcast at a cultural event on the Shankill Road, I thought why not, let's go for it.The team at Greater Shankill Alternatives organised what they called a "Cultural Busking" event on the day of the Whiterock parade as part of the Safer Areas For Everyone (SAFE) programme. We hosted lambeg drummers, a piper, an accordion player and a singer/songwriter as part of the event and took some time to connect with their stories and to listen to them play and share their talent with the Shankill Road Community. The event was well received and it was great to be out and about with musicians sharing their talent and promoting their culture. We hope that you enjoy the episode and we will be back again on 20th July with the Cowan Memorial Flute Band.Made to Parade is sponsored by the British Drum Co. We’re back to finish our look at the Shankill Butchers and their reign of terror in Belfast in Northern Ireland. The Shankill Butchers were an Irish gang—many of whom were members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)—that was active between 1975 and 1982 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was based in the Shankill area and was responsible for the deaths of at least 23 people, most of whom were killed in sectarian attacks. The gang was notorious for kidnapping, torturing and murdering random Catholic and suspected Catholic civilians.
In the North violence escalated last night to a burnt out bus and a photographer being attacked. Our reporter Henry McKean was in the Shankill area of Belfast today, getting the reaction from locals.

The Shankill Butchers were a group of people who terrorized the streets of Belfast for seven years. They would pick up unsuspecting Catholic men off the street and then brutally torture them with butcher knives before killing them and dumping their bodies. This episode follows the activity of the gang, from formation to their eventual capture and what happened to those who evaded authorities. Heres a link to a one-hour documentary that was a great source for this episode:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBcYm7gDYxs See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This podcast is the story of the remarkable work of Ramy and Roula Taleb, how they journeyed to Belfast and are now making peace in Lebanon. For the last 18 years Jonny and Jenn Clark and their team have raised funds for young Christians from areas of conflict to spend 6-12 months in Belfast or Rostrevor, Northern Ireland learning about reconciliation and how their faith can build peace in their communities. Ramy was the first Lebanese trainee and landed into Belfast in 2005, barely speaking English but with a deep hunger to learn from the experience. He ended up spending five years in Belfast, particularly working in the Shankill and Falls areas. One of the projects Ramy focused on in Belfast was a project which takes Forgiveness education into many Protestant and Catholic schools in the city. By 2010 Ramy had married the beautiful Roula and together they started a new life back in Lebanon, ultimately starting a sister project of the Belfast work called the Foundation for Forgiveness and Reconciliation (ffrlebanon.org). The work in Lebanon is unprecedented in it’s radical commitment to building bridges throughout the sectarian divides of this post-civil war country. Ramy and Roula are courageously taking forgiveness, reconciliation and peace-building training to as many people as they can and are often doing it with what little resources they can find. If you are looking to support a grass-roots charity in the Middle East you should check out the work of FFR and get behind them. This work in Lebanon is something all of the GOTF team are passionate about and it’s why Josh Eaves (Instagram: @josheaves1) and Jonny Clark continue to be involved in different ways, including our plans to make our next Guardians Of The Flame documentary there. This episode was as usual recorded by the brilliant Fra Sands of @safeplacestudios. The music in our podcasts is by the brilliant Irish folk band @naleanai
We've been good here at Murder, My Dude and we're doing our best to practice Social Distancing! It may have made us a little bit stir crazy, though, and the result is one of the goofiest episodes of the podcast ever! The subject matter, as always, is quite serious though: This Week In Murder explores a horrible mass shooting in North Carolina and a prison escape that wasn't in Alabama. Our featured topic is our second annual Murder O'Dude: a look at the Shankill Butchers, a notrious and homicdal gang that terrorized Belfast for the better part of a decade. (Fans in the U.K. and Ireland: apologies in advance for our ignorance!) Finally, a very special edition of Who Died The Worst explores the dangers of the outside world in an effort to promote social distancing! Three stories recorded at different times & places: Esther Vaughan remembers a Christmas not to be forgotten; Richard O’Leary remembers being a Cork man living on the Shankill; Sinéad McAleavy remembers and unforgettable teacher. Paul is your host. Tenx9 is a monthly storytelling event where nine people have up to ten minutes to tell a true story from their own life on a particular theme. It began in Belfast in 2011, started by Pádraig Ó Tuama & Paul Doran, and as well as filling the main venue in the Black Box, it has spread to Scotland, England, USA, Canada, Netherlands & Australia. While it draws on the tradition of oral storytelling, we also encourage the shy, the nervous & the reticent - some people are confident speakers other use notes or the full text. We work with people to help them find their voice.

Songs from Detroit that we love:)
A leadership vacuum is causing harm across Northern Ireland, including in loyalist areas, and contributes to the lure of paramilitaries, warns victims’ campaigner Alan McBride in the latest Forward Together podcast. “I think we probably need to put a lot of investment into areas like East Belfast and the Shankill and other areas to try and improve the leadership potential,” he argues. Alan adds: “As a grassroots working class Protestant loyalist myself, I have a real feel for that community. I don't always think that they're best served by the sort of spokespeople that they put forward at this moment. So I would like to see other voices - voices that perhaps we haven't heard yet.” Listen to an insightful interview with Alan that takes a positive look at challenges facing Northern Ireland society.
In Episode 4 of Hidden Histories of the Northern Ireland Troubles I chat to Paul Burgess about growing up in the Shankill and Glenbryn during the 1970s, co-forming the punk band Ruefrex, supporting Stiff Little Fingers and how the Troubles influenced his music and writing. Paul's first novel 'White Church Black Mountain' (Matador, 2015)is a thrilling 'post-conflict' story which deals with the dark secrets held by the Troubles, and the legacy of decades of bloodshed. The best of Ruefrex - Capital Letters - is available on Cherry Red Records. Follow Paul on Twitter @polbrugha

Steve unpacks sections of Mark 10 and Jeremiah 31 with various contemporary scenarios. U2 are in town and even a casual look at Blind Bartimeaus and the people of God’s Babylonian exile draws us to their song The Blackout. Steves unpacking, merges the words of this song with this week’s memorial to the Shankill bomb and the current state of the Church. What are the clues in the Biblical text and in U2’s Songs Of Experience tour that can help us find cheer, hope and consolation? Expect many many refere
Donkey Voters, We are bank with a bang though and in today’s episode we interview Peter Hitchens, long-time Eurosceptic, Mail on Sunday columnist and brother of the late Christopher. Peter has generated controversy over his criticism of our beloved Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and ignited a subsequent twitter storm with Irish tweeps about the 1916 rising and German involvement therewith. More here: http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2017/08/would-the-irish-have-put-up-with-being-treated-like-this-.html We discuss with him in some more detail his criticism of our Leo, why he believes the Good Friday Agreement was a surrender to paramilitaries and his preference for direct rule – an idea which was shortly after taken up by Michael Gove (who initially supported the deal) in his ‘Price of Peace’ essay. We noted his suggestion that when (the what he sees as inevitable) reunification of the island happens, Irish soldiers may well end up patrolling the Shankill in the face of disquiet from the Unionist minority. We also discuss Brexit, why he sees referendums as unfair and increasingly so, and his view that Britain should stay in the Single Market despite the loss of sovereignty that will entail. Finally, we discuss his view on the Kevin Myers controversy.

This week we were joined by Sunderland ladies and Ireland ladies footballing hero, Stephanie Roche. Steph spoke to us about growing up in the borough, her early days of playing and football with Valeview FC and Cabinteely FC and the discovery that she could play football as a profession. From the inaugural women's Champions League with Dublin's Peamount United to her time playing in France, her short stint in The US with Huston Dash right up to her signing for Sunderland earlier this year and venturing into the world of media with her Irish Independent column. We heard all about the wonder strike that shot Steph from local girl from Shankill to household name and global recognition. The nomination for the famed FIFA Puskas Award all the way to the award ceremony where she was rubbing shoulders with footballing superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi. It was great sitting down with Steph and we hope you enjoy hearing about her career to date.
