What does it really mean to lead — especially during times of uncertainty, burnout, and constant change? In this episode, I'm joined by author and longtime movement leader Eveline Shen to discuss her book Choosing to Lead Against the Current: The Courageous Operating System for Changemakers. After spending more than two decades leading Forward Together, Shen has helped mentor organizers, activists, and changemakers working to build stronger communities and more sustainable movements. This conversation explores leadership, courage, burnout, systems thinking, and how people can create meaningful change without losing themselves in the process.
Joshua 10 reminds us that God is able to do more than we think. What looked impossible on the battlefield became a testimony of God's power and faithfulness. The same God who made the sun stand still is still working in ways beyond what we can imagine. Trust Him even when the odds seem impossible. We are reminded of this as we begin our Forward Together initiative. Who were some winners of the Group's award divisions? How do these wins impact Genesee County's residents and small businesses? As part of the presentation, CEO Tim Herman noted two central themes that emerged while developing the organization's latest annual report: change and collaboration. He pointed to a shifting landscape shaped by a new federal administration, evolving state-level policies, and the continued growth of artificial intelligence, among other factors. “Through all of this, the Flint & Genesee Group stayed focused on advancing the Forward Together vision of making Flint & Genesee a top-five county in Michigan by 2040,” said Herman. “And we did that by working together to improve outcomes in the spaces of jobs, talent, livability, and equity.” Herman also emphasized the critical role of partnerships in driving these efforts forward. “The work we do absolutely could not be done without others,” he said. “Strong, intentional partnerships are essential to achieving meaningful, long-term impact across our community.” The annual report noted that — in addition to helping businesses understand and prepare for new laws that went into effect in 2025 — the Flint & Genesee Chamber established the Mid-Michigan Nonprofit Professionals. It also revitalized the Disability Works committee with support from partners at the Genesee Intermediate School District, The Disability Network, Peckham Industries, Genesee County Parks, and other leading organizations. Additionally, the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance closed on three major development deals that will result in $50.5 million of private investment and the creation of 317 new jobs for Genesee County. These included Fluid Cooling Systems, Custom Air Handling, and Miller Industries. Finally, the Flint & Genesee Group advocated on behalf of the region's business community, specifically around bills that pertained to work in business, talent, and place, such as the Earned Sick Time Act and the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act. It also celebrated being awarded a Top Workplaces honor by the Detroit Free Press for the third consecutive year. Please note that the highlights included here just skim the surface of all that was accomplished in 2025. For a more thorough overview, visit AnnualReport.FlintandGenesee.org.

Drawing inspiration from George Couros' work, including The Innovator's Mindset and Forward Together, the conversation explores what it really means to build learner-centred schools in a world that keeps changing the rules.Jason and Garth unpack innovation not as a buzzword, but as a posture—one rooted in curiosity, relationships, and the courage to keep things fresh. From professional learning that actually energizes educators, to the power of networks beyond our own schools, this episode is a reminder that meaningful growth happens when we stay open, tell better stories, and refuse to get too comfortable with “the way it's always been done.”Take AwaysEducation is evolving—and that's what makes it thrilling if we lean into it.Learner-centred schools don't happen by accident; they're built intentionally.Innovation isn't a program—it's a habit we practice together.Great professional development should spark curiosity, not compliance.Meaningful experiences matter just as much for adults as they do for students.Growth accelerates when we learn with and from people beyond our own buildings.Change doesn't arrive on its own—we have to go after it.Schools innovate best when communities are part of the story.Capturing mantras, moments, and stories keeps learning human.Staying fresh requires noticing when the “smell” has changed—and responding.“The future ain't what it used to be.”“Don't get used to the smell.”“Kids these days… kids these days.”Chapters00:00 – Welcome to Lassoing Leadership04:28 – Rethinking Innovation and the Innovator's Mindset08:15 – What Educators Owe Learners in a Changing World12:15 – Culture, Curiosity, and Continuous Learning13:59 – Forward Together and Paying Attention to New Smells18:05 – Learning Beyond Education and the Power of Networks20:50 – What's Ahead: Guests, Ideas, and Staying Curious

In this episode of The Balance, I chat with George Couros about his new book, Forward Together: Moving Schools from Conflict to Community in Contentious Times. We start with the origin story, why he decided to write another book. George shares how this book is structured around principles and perspectives, not quick fixes, and why trust, relationships, and purpose sit at the center of moving forward in challenging times. We dig into the lessons he's learned through missteps, hard conversations, and personal growth, and how those experiences shaped this book. This conversation is an invitation for educators at every level to slow down, reflect, and consider how we create the conditions for collaboration, belonging, and shared ownership in our schools and communities. Rather than treating innovation as a checklist or a program, they explore it as a way of being—one rooted in trust, relationships, and curiosity. Eveline Shen, an award-winning leadership and social change strategist, is the principal at Leading Courageously, a for-profit company where she teaches her "Courageous Operating System" to help leaders of color face their challenges with courage, confidence, and strength. Previously, she spent 22 years as the executive director of Forward Together, building it into one of the country's largest multi-issue organizations led by women of color. Eveline, who goes by "Ev," helps leaders rewire the limiting patterns that hold them back — including perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and people-pleasing — and replace them with what she calls "courageous" actions. She is the author of Choosing to Lead Against the Current: The Courageous Operating System for Changemakers. Her target audience — both at Leading Courageously and for her book — is primarily mission-driven individuals and groups advocating for social change, many of whom instinctively view business leaders and entrepreneurs not as partners, but as adversaries. Yet, many of the core elements of Ev's "courageous operating system" apply universally, whether you're in the nonprofit or the for-profit world. Moreover, listeners to this episode will likely discover they have more in common with Ev and her followers than they imagined. Why are so many talented community organizers burning out and leaving the field just when we need them most? What would it look like if nonprofits collectively committed to improving wages and working conditions for the people doing the most essential work in our movements? How can funders shift from perpetuating a cycle of underpayment to investing in the workforce that drives social change? In this episode, you'll get promising ideas from guests who are answering these questions with practical, real-world efforts on the ground. Host Rusty Stahl sits down with Kara Park from All Due Respect, and Gaby Hernandez from Órale, to explore a groundbreaking project in Southern California where 20 organizations came together to create shared labor standards for the community organizers on their teams. Through candid conversation, they reveal findings from their compensation study showing that organizers are making an average of $57,000 while directors wish they could pay $65,000, and that there's a troubling salary plateau that pushes experienced organizers out of the field after five years. The guests share how their collective, multi-organizational approach moved beyond individual organizations to create more system-wide change, including transparent pay scales, wellness budgets, and a direct appeal to funders. This conversation offers practical insights for any nonprofit leaders grappling with staff recruitment, compensation, and retention, funders seeking to make meaningful impact, and anyone who believes that the people fighting for justice deserve to thrive while doing that work. Kara and Gaby demonstrate that addressing burnout requires both better compensation and improved working conditions - you can't have one without the other. Their work provides a roadmap for how organizations can move from accepting poverty wages as inevitable to collectively demanding the resources needed to sustain a powerful movement for social change.Resources:All Due Respect websitePublications page on All Due Respect websiteAll Due Respect: Building Strong Organizations by Creating Fair Labor Standards for Organizers (initial national study by All Due Respect, April 2022)What is the Status of Organizer Compensation in Southern California?
