Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Birkot Ha'shahar – the series of blessings that we recite each morning – appear to fall under the category of "Misvot Aseh She'ha'zman Gerama," meaning, Misvot that apply only at certain times. After all, although different views exist as to precisely by when these Berachot must be recited, there is a clear consensus that they must be recited specifically during the day. One view requires reciting Birkot Ha'shahar by the end of the fourth Halachic hour of the day, another view maintains that they must be recited by Hasot (Halachic midday), and the generally accepted opinion is that they must be recited before sundown. Either way, this requirement is limited to a specific time-frame. As such, we should, seemingly, apply the rule exempting women from "Misvot Aseh She'ha'zman Gerama," such that women should be exempt from the Birkot Ha'shahar obligation. Indeed, the Mishna Berura writes that women are exempt from this requirement, but he adds that Ashkenazic women may recite these Berachot voluntarily. Ashkenazic practice follows the opinion of Rabbenu Tam (France, 1100-1171) allowing those exempt from a Misva to recite the Beracha over the Misva if they wish to perform the Misva. Thus, for example, an Ashkenazic woman who wishes to take the four species on Sukkot, even though she is exempt, may recite the Beracha of "Al Netilat Lulab" over this Misva. By the same token, the Mishna Berura writes, Ashkenazic women may recite Birkot Ha'shahar if they so desire. According to this line of reasoning, Sephardic women should not recite the morning blessings. Sephardic practice does not allow the recitation of a Beracha when one voluntarily performs a Misva from which he or she is exempt. Perhaps, then, we should conclude that Sephardic women may not recite Birkot Ha'shahar. However, Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Jerusalem, 1924-1998) ruled that women may, in fact, recite Birkot Ha'shahar, distinguishing between these Berachot and Berachot recited over a Misva which one performs voluntarily. The text of Berachot recited over the performance of a Misva thanks Hashem who "has commanded us" ("Ve'sivanu") to perform the given Misva. Sephardic custom does not allow reciting this Beracha when performing a Misva voluntarily for the simple reason that the individual cannot say "Ve'sivanu" about a Misva that he or she was not commanded to observe. The morning blessings, by contrast, praise and express gratitude to Hashem for the gifts He has granted us, such as the restoration of our souls in the morning, the ability to see, the ability to walk, and so on. These blessings, of course, are no less relevant to women than to men, and so there is no reason why a woman should not be allowed to recite these Berachot. Hacham Ovadia Yosef concurred with this ruling, but for a different reason – noting the minority opinion among the Poskim that one may recite Birkot Ha'shahar even after sundown, in the evening. This was the view of the Vilna Gaon (1720-1797) and a small number of other Halachic authorities. According to this opinion, there is no time when the Birkot Ha'shahar obligation does not apply, and thus it does not fall under the category of time-bound Misvot. Hence, women are included in the obligation. (This rationale requires further clarification, because Hacham Ovadia himself does not follow the minority opinion of the Vilna Gaon allowing the recitation of Birkot Ha'shahar after sundown. This question was posed by Rav Moshe Ha'levi, in his work Birkat Hashem.) Regardless, the accepted view is that women are required to recite Birkot Ha'shahar. Of course, they do not recite the Beracha "She'lo Asani Isha," which men recite to thank Hashem for not creating them as a woman. As men are bound by more Misvot than women, and they thus have more opportunities for serving Hashem, they are required each morning to recite this Beracha and thank Hashem for these additional opportunities. The Shulhan Aruch writes that women recite instead "Baruch She'asani Ki'rsono" – "Blessed is He who made me according to His will." This Beracha should be recited without "Hashem Elokenu Melech Ha'olam." In reciting this blessing, the woman gives thanks for her special nature, that Hashem created her as an especially refined being who does not require the same number of Misvot as men need in order to perfect herself and live a spiritually meaningful and accomplished life. Summary: Women are required to recite Birkot Ha'shahar each morning. Instead of the Beracha "She'lo Asani Isha," they recite, "Baruch She'asa Li Kol Sorki," without "Hashem Elokenu Melech Ha'olam."

In this episode of the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, I'm joined by Mike Hardenbrook—author of No Willpower Required and host of the Journey to the Sunny Side podcast—for a conversation that's been a long time coming.Mike's story will resonate with anyone who's ever struggled with drinking more than they want to but never felt “out of control” enough to warrant a label. His approach to habit change is science-forward, rooted in neuroscience and behavioral psychology, and deeply aligned with our core belief at Alcohol Minimalist: you are not powerless.Together, we discuss:How Mike's drinking slowly crept into a habitual nightly loop—despite a successful life and healthy routines. Why the traditional “powerless” model of alcohol change never resonated with him—and why he decided to write a book for people like him. What it means to truly “rewire” your drinking habit and how Mike used curiosity, experimentation, and mindset shifts to get there. Our shared belief in empowering people through understanding their brains—and how that changes everything. The role of alcohol as a “light switch” for the brain, and why the reward loop gets so entrenched for daily drinkers. This is a real, down-to-earth conversation between two people who have both experienced the challenges of breaking a long-term drinking habit and emerged with a science-backed, compassionate way forward. If you've been trying to drink less but feel stuck, this episode is for you. And if the idea of change without willpower sounds too good to be true, give this a listen—you may find a new path forward.About Mike Hardenbrook: Mike is the author of No Willpower Required: A Neuroscience Approach to Change Your Habits with Alcohol and the host of the Journey to the Sunny Side podcast. Summers in Louisiana tend to linger longer than elsewhere in the U.S., and for many locals, the heat is a perfect excuse to skip town for more exotic destinations. But for those of us who plan to stick around, there are plenty of ways to take a vacation without needing to pack a bag. On this week's show, we travel virtually to the French Riviera with New Orleans chef Samuel Peery. Finding inspiration from coastal brasseries in French cities like Nice and Marseille, Sam has created a menu at the Kimpton Hotel's King Brasserie that offers a taste of the Côte d'Azur only half a mile from the Mississippi River. Over at The Bell, a British-inspired pub in New Orleans' Mid-City neighborhood, locals can stop in for an ale or lager served in imperial pints – or dine in a room decked in tartan fabrics, dark woods, and Union Jack flags. Owner Andrew Bell tells us how he went from a career in professional soccer to become a British publican in the Pelican State. Finally, we get a behind-the-scenes look at Exhibition Hub's newest immersive exhibit in New Orleans. Titanic: An Immersive Voyage takes visitors back to 1912 to experience the ship as a passenger on its ill-fated maiden voyage. Executive producer John Zaller tells us about the exhibition and the important role food played on the luxury liner. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.
HUMANS REQUIRED: CRITICAL MOMENTS IN THE HIRING PROCESS How many times have we heard the comforting phrase 'but recruitment will always need the human touch'? Intuitively, I believe this is true at least for non-volume, permanent hiring but but do we really understand why, when, who and how? We probably need to find out because if we rely on comforting homilies, we might find the CFO won't quite get it ;-) - Why do we think the 'human touch' matters? - When we think about the human touch, what scenarios come immediately to mind? - AI / Automation has proven to improve CX in many cases, so is the case being made that more AI / Automation should mean further improvements in CX? - Does the source of the candidate matter when thinking about the 'human touch' - When do we think are the most important moments in the hiring funnel for the human beings to be involved? - Can sometimes 'more human' make things worse? - What does it look like when we have the perfect blend of AI driven efficiency and human delivered empathy? - Do we need to quantify the human touch? If so how does that connect with OKR / KPI's? - What do we - as humans - need from a recruitment experience? All this and more with Jean-Marie Caillaud, Founder (WorkMeTender), Carrie Brophy, Senior Director Talent Acquisition (Marriott International) & Mark Kunaseelan, Head of Resourcing (University of Arts, London) We are on Friday 1st August, 2pm BST / 9ET - follow the channel here (recommended) and save your spot for this demo by clicking on the green button. We're so glad you are here! Thanks for checking out Sunday's message!-- SUNDAY'S NOTES --They chose the following: Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). Traveling with a Minor Who Is Not Your Child: What's Required? Taking someone else's child on a trip? Even with the best intentions, this raises legal and medical concerns. Most airlines, border patrol agencies, and even campgrounds may require written consent and documentation. Documents When Traveling with a Minor Whether you're going across the country or just across state lines, you'll want to carry: Child Travel Consent Form (signed by both parents or legal guardians) Copy of the child's birth certificate or passport Medical Authorization Form (to approve medical care in emergencies) Insurance cards or policy numbers Emergency contact information Medical Authorization Form: Why It's Non-Negotiable A Medical Authorization Form grants temporary guardianship to seek medical attention for the child in case of illness or injury. Hospitals may not treat minors without this. Include in the form: Child's name and DOB Parent/legal guardian's name and signature (with notarization if possible) Details of the trip (dates and destination) List of approved treatments or restrictions Insurance details and primary care physician contact info You can download free templates online or get one notarized through your pediatrician's office or a legal advisor. New to You Camper? Why a Backyard Test Run is a Must Buying a “new to you” camper is exciting—but don't hit the road just yet. You wouldn't drive a used car across the country without testing it, right? Functionality First – Do a Trial Run in Your Driveway or Backyard Before your first real trip, set up your camper overnight at home. It's the safest, easiest way to uncover any hidden issues without being stranded hours from help. What to Test During Your Backyard Campout Power systems: Plug into shore power, test battery backup, lights, outlets, and USB ports Water systems: Fill fresh tank, test pump, faucets, toilet, and shower Propane appliances: Run stove, fridge, and heater (test for leaks!) Slide-outs and leveling systems: Make sure all mechanical parts move smoothly Sleeping arrangements: Try beds and cushions overnight Storage: Test drawers, bins, and access to gear Emergency gear: Fire extinguisher, CO2/smoke detectors, first aid kit You'll also want to practice dumping tanks if your camper includes grey and black water systems. The language of the universe is energy, and when we understand how to speak energy, our conversation with life becomes more fluid and manifesting our desires becomes natural.• Sacrifice is not about suffering but exchanging an old frequency for a new, better one• The universe constantly seeks balance and harmony, replacing lower energies with higher ones• We must let go of old beliefs and ways of thinking to receive our desired reality• You cannot drive two cars at once – you must choose between your old reality and your new one• The "liminal space" between letting go and receiving is where growth happens• Manifestation is instant in the embodiment of a frequency, not in physical appearance• Life mirrors your frequency – it will only give you what you are, not what you want• Your frequency distorts reality to reflect itself, both positively and negatively• True freedom comes from releasing old beliefs that no longer serve your desired reality• When we all embody our highest frequencies, we create heaven on earthGo and give yourself permission to let go of what no longer serves you. This episode of The Growth Minded Accountant hosted by Lee Reams II, focuses on building a "Referral Growth Engine That Runs Itself." It emphasizes that referrals are the most profitable lead source and can be generated through a repeatable process using existing tools like an inbox and calendar, without needing ads or AI.The podcast outlines a 4-part "Referral Blueprint Framework":Trigger the Ask: Identify optimal times to ask for referrals, such as after a client signs their return, experiences a financial win, during quarterly reviews, upon onboarding completion, or after providing positive feedback. A "Trigger Tracker" (e.g., a shared Google Sheet) can help teams identify these moments.Make Referrals Easy: Create a simple referral page or form (e.g., Google Forms, Calendly) and provide clients with easy-to-share copy for emails or texts.Say Thank You: Acknowledge every referral with a personal email, small gift (e.g., eGift card), handwritten note, or public recognition.Track and Repeat: Use a simple Google Sheet to track referrers, referral names, dates, outcomes, and rewards sent. The episode also highlights getting the team involved by training them to recognize referral triggers and making it fun with shout-outs, internal bonuses, and leaderboards. The host provides a 5-day checklist to launch this system.

This week on the show, we're discussing the specifics of Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) as we head into the second half of 2025. Whether you're approaching your first year of RMDs or have been taking them for a while, I break down everything you need to know, from when you need to start taking distributions based on your birth year, to how RMDs are calculated, which accounts are affected, and the potential tax consequences for missing a withdrawal. I'm also sharing eight practical strategies you can use to lower your future RMDs, including asset diversification, Roth conversions, tax-efficient income planning, optimizing Social Security timing, and even using charitable contributions to your advantage. With real-world examples and actionable tips, this episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone looking to navigate their retirement withdrawals as tax-efficiently as possible. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [02:48] Calculating your Required Minimum Distribution. [05:02] IRA distribution factors & penalties. [10:40] Retirement tax strategy tips. [13:35] IRA conversion tax planning. [15:37] Optimizing social security timing. [18:48] Tax-efficient investment account strategy. Smart Strategies to Manage Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) New rules over the past few years have pushed back when retirees must start taking RMDs. As of today: If you were born in 1959 or earlier, your RMDs begin at age 73. If you were born in 1960 or later, the threshold moves to age 75. RMDs apply to traditional IRAs, rollover IRAs, SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, and most employer-sponsored plans, including 401(k)s and 403(b)s. Importantly, Roth IRAs are not subject to these mandatory withdrawals during the owner's lifetime, providing an attractive planning opportunity. How RMDs Are Calculated Your annual RMD is determined by dividing the prior year's December 31 retirement account balance by a life expectancy factor from IRS tables. Most people use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. If your spouse is more than 10 years younger, you get a slightly lower withdrawal requirement by using the Joint Life Expectancy Table. For example, if you are 73 with a $500,000 IRA, and the IRS factor is 26.5, your RMD would be $18,868 for that year. If you miss your RMD, penalties can be steep, 25% of the amount not withdrawn, though if corrected within two years, the penalty drops to 10%. RMDs are generally taxed as ordinary income. If your IRA contains after-tax contributions, those aren't taxed again, but careful tracking is essential. The key is smart, proactive planning. RMDs increase your total taxable income, which can impact not just your IRS bill, but also Medicare premiums (thanks to the “IRMAA” surcharge) and eligibility for certain state tax breaks. Eight Strategies to Lower RMD Impact Here are several tactics to help retirees minimize RMDs' sting and keep more of their wealth working for them: Diversify Account Types Early Don't keep all retirement savings in pre-tax accounts. Consider a mix of pre-tax, Roth, and taxable brokerage accounts so you have flexibility in retirement to optimize withdrawals for tax purposes. Build an Optimized Retirement Income Plan Work with a financial advisor or CPA to design an intentional strategy for sourcing retirement income. With careful planning, you can potentially lower how much tax you'll owe and avoid unwelcome surprises. Do Roth Conversions When Taxes Are Low If you retire before collecting Social Security (and RMDs), you might have years of low taxable income, prime time to convert part of your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA at a low tax rate. Once in the Roth, future qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Delay Social Security for Strategic Reasons Delaying Social Security not only increases your monthly benefit but also gives you more low-income years for Roth conversions, thus reducing future RMDs. Consider Working Longer If you continue working past RMD age and participate in your employer's retirement plan, you may be able to delay RMDs from that plan until you retire (as long as you don't own more than 5% of the company). Aggregate and Simplify Accounts Roll over old 401(k) accounts into a single IRA if eligible. It's easier to track, calculate, and satisfy RMDs, reducing the risk of costly missteps. Optimize Asset Location Hold faster-growing investments (like stocks) in taxable accounts and slower-growing ones (like bonds) in IRAs. This helps slow the growth of your RMD-producing accounts, keeping future required withdrawals smaller. Use Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) Once you're RMD-eligible, you can send up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to charity. It will count toward your RMD but won't be taxed, potentially a win-win for you and your favorite causes. Send us a textSaints in the South classic! This week we discuss how scriptures that are specifically given to individuals at the time, can be applied to our lives and our circumstances. For example, section 81 was originally given to Jesse Gause. However, he later left the church and this revelation, when published substituted Frederick G. Williams name for Jesse Gause's name. We discuss the importance of standing in the office in which you have been called and doing it faithfully. Sometimes that is a calling in church, a calling in life, or a situation you are placed in. Where much is given, much is required. It is true, those who have been given more or know more should be expected to do more. Finally, we discuss who is supposed to care for those that stand in need. Who has claim upon the church or the Lord's storehouse? Who has the responsibility to watch over the down trodden? Join us this week as we continue to apply the scriptures to our personal lives.Support the show... Become a "Patron Saint"!!
July 21-27“Peter may have given the best description of the Savior's mortal ministry in five words when he referred to Jesus, “who went about doing good.” (M. Russell Ballard). You want to know what to do with your life? There it is, simply put. If we are to be like him, we go about doing good. In Doctrine and Covenants Section 81, we are given the same charge with more detail: “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hand down, and strengthen the feeble knees” (Doctrine and Covenants 81:5). That is a very vivid picture.

This week we talk about the shifting landscape of coffee certifications — particularly the recent changes to the Q grader system. With the program moving under CQI, many coffee professionals are now being told their existing certifications no longer count, and that they'll need to retest under a new system. This sparks a conversation about what certifications really mean in practice. Do they actually make someone better at sourcing or tasting coffee, or are they more about recognition and status within the industry? For seasoned professionals with years of experience, the answer isn't always clear — especially when their day-to-day work remains unchanged by these official titles. We talk about how learned skills typically come not from structured certifications, but from real-world practice. While certifications can offer a shared language and pathway for new professionals, we question whether they should be gatekeepers for credibility. In the end, staying sharp and doing meaningful work comes down to passion, commitment, and community — not just passing a test. It's a reminder that building culture in coffee isn't about following someone else's system, but about knowing your values and living them out.
