In this episode, I talk to the wonderful actor and comedian, THOM TUCK. Known for being one third of the comedy group, The Penny Dreadfuls who debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006, Tuck has appeared in and directed many plays and comedy shows. An excellent improvise with extensive radio work, Tuck has founded (along with comedian John Luke Roberts), hosted and curated the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society, a cult evening of new comedy, since 2011. I have seen Tuck perform in the play Coalition at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012, appearing several times in London for comedian Vix Leyton from 2020 to 2022, and hosting the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society in London and Edinburgh in 2020, 2023 and 2024. Alternative Comedy Memorial Society (23:50, Heroes @ Monkey Barrel) Michael says: "At some point, we all have to go to a late night mixed-bill show and ACMS is the best one there is. The snooty sneering of the Oxbridge elite and some comics against popular humour. Variable opinions on The Weirdos and the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society. The talent of Luisa Omielan. The irresistible sexual attraction of Italian comic Giacinto Palmieri. The inability of comics like Michael McIntyre, Frank Carson & Matthew Kelly to stop being themselves. Copstick’s work with Basil Brush and her admiration for the Chuckle Brothers. Coughing John’s failure to visit Amsterdam’s red light district and his attraction to heroin + LSD. The success of one Malcolm Hardee Comedy Award. The BBC’s Appreciation Index. Plus Copstick sings. John’s quote of the week: “Beheading teddy bears! Thom Tuck joins critic Copstick and an ineffectively interjecting John at Mama Biashara in London in a doomed attempt to plug The Penny Dreadfuls’ new project. Copstick passionately attacks the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society and a female comedian but is clearly now warming to Sarah Millican. Thom talks about his indescribable new show and his ambition to appear in Doctor Who while Copstick wants to play a villain. Thom talks about panel shows. Copstick talks about him performing in her porn movies. “The one thing comedy can never be is smug” (Copstick) “The times I have done it, I have both got completely naked and been in a dress.” (Thom Tuck) http://www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming posts occasional blogs at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com
A wilfully preposterous boozehound in a pashmina, Thom Tuck is a superbly theatrical stand-up, one third of fringe-conquering sketch outfit The Penny Dreadfuls, and co-ringmaster of The Alternative Comedy Memorial Society. We delve into the challenges of developing a festival-friendly solo act for the live circuit, and discuss whether his commitment to character is ever a cage. He also reveals a surprising anger...Get ad-free new episodes, bonus content from interviews and much more by joining the Insiders Club at www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders@ComComPod | www.comedianscomedian.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The leading voice of feminism in UK comedy, devastatingly funny Bridget Christie is adept at unearthing humour in difficult or important topics.
