If you've got big ideas, this is probably the most important episode we've ever done.God is a Woman is the pinnacle of a 17 year stand up comedy career.Luisa Omielan has created a musical comedy that tells the truth about Mary Madeline and what happens when you wipe women's stories from history. The show might not get made.Luisa has sold everything she owns and moved to the states to pursue its creation. That's how strongly she believes in the idea and how committed she is to doing everything in her power to get it made.Luisa knows that the best chance of success for her musical, is in LA.But the USA is, ‘politically uneasy' right now. Stewart Lee has stated he wouldn't tour there at this moment in history. But Luisa is there. She's there because she believes in her idea and she believes that art is revolution. She believes in using your voice. In saying the hard things, the inconvenient things. She lives on a razors edge. No marketing budget. No PR team. No management. When you don't have financial backing you have to get inventive and you have to ask for help.Which is one of the hardest things to do. I'm so bad at it when it comes to my own work. But when it comes to other creatives I have no hang ups…If you listen to this episode and you think this project should get made, you should help make it.Luisa is funded by Patreon, where over 500 people, who share her vision, give a small amount each month. You can join them. It's a revolutionary act, to find your favourite artists and support them.Your whole life, people have projected their doubts onto you. They have told you that obsession is weird. ‘Chase your dreams' is a cliche. No one tells you how and no one expects you to actually do it.Do you have an idea that you'd sell everything for? If you do, go after it, CHASE it, with every fibre of your being.Luisa's PatreonGod Is A Woman - LIVE in L.A. To hear more, visit creativerebels.substack.com

Once described as the 'comedian's comedian' Stewart Lee has been performing stand up since 1988. He is known for pushing boundaries with his intelligent, self-referential and often provocative style of comedy but in his new show 'Stewart Lee vs the Man Wulf' he questions his place on the comedy circuit in an era of increasing populism rhetoric and the popularity of, in his words “$60m Netflix comedians of hate.” In this episode of Ways to Change the World with Krishnan Guru-Murthy he discusses the state of comedy today and what he thinks of the comedy style of comics like Ricky Gervais and Dave Chappelle as well as why he wouldn't tour America right now. As The Observer, the world's oldest Sunday newspaper begins a new era under Tortoise media he also reflects on his column for the paper which he's stopped after 15 years. The sun has had it's hat on, in the UK. Marina is not in the UK. She's still on holiday, where it's cloudy. What are the chances? Somehow, Jemma has managed to find a Cilla clip that draws a comparison to the situation. Marina takes it well and, Trawl trooper that she is, she's packed her mic so she and Jemma can trawl through what on earth is going on at Reform UK.Despite being able to count the number of MP's they have on one hand, there's serious trouble at mill and a very public spat has ensued, seemingly triggered by Rupert Lowe thinking he should be leader post his endorsement from Musk. Watching them eat themselves, it occurs to the Trawl ladies, that maybe, just maybe the UK media gives them all far too much credence. After that Jemma and Marina discuss Labour's latest announcements concerning benefits, including disability benefits and PIP specifically. The fact they're going after the most vulnerable in society feels disgusting to them and the way they're going about it is pure Tory. Starmer promised no more austerity, there 'could' be a wealth tax, but no, it feels like the people who have the least are expected to suffer. Not good. As for the party line the MP's are spouting as they do the rounds, well, it's depressingly Tory too. After that topic it feels only fair to finish with a farewell to Darren Grimes who has left GB News. A very emotional Darren cited not being able to say exactly what he wanted to as the reason for leaving. Jemma and Marina wonder what on earth he wants to say that you can't say at the 'home of free speech.'It's bon voyage to him and hello to some under rated tweets and a brilliant pudding served by Stewart Lee. #482 May The Force Be With You - It's a very special and moving Christmas episode as Richard talks to Ukranian comedian Vasyl Baidak about performing comedy in a war zone, how comedy has differed before, after and during the conflict, performing in shelters and trenches, how comedy helps process the horror and how absurd comedy seems redundant in the more absurd state of war, converting Stewart Lee tickets into a car, being championed by Stephen Fry, the influence of Andy Kaufman, building the country back one house at a time and keeping the Ukraine in people's minds and raising funds for the military. How do you tour and celebrate Christmas in a war? It's an incredible story from a very eloquent man speaking in a second language (where school lessons did not prepare him for talking about war). Dan chats with Stewart Lee, author of "Me and My Addiction," about his journey with alcoholism and sobriety. Stewart shares his relatable story, from trying to fit in as an awkward teenager to hitting rock bottom and attempting suicide. He discusses getting and staying sober, including stints in rehab, relapsing at big life events, and finally committing to recovery. Stuart offers insights into addiction psychology and talks about finding purpose through new hobbies like boxing and dance. This raw, honest interview provides many teachable moments about addiction that will resonate with those struggling with their own addiction or that of a loved one. KEY TAKEAWAYS Addiction manifests in teenagers trying to fit in, using substances to find confidence and escape anxiety. The desire can start very young. Hitting rock bottom, like a suicide attempt or threat of violence, may motivate you to get sober but isn't a cure-all. Relapse is common. Major life events like having a baby are often excuses to drink, not opportunities for sobriety. Addiction distorts priorities. Getting sober requires finding new challenges and purposes in life to obsess over, not just avoiding substances. Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that active addiction robs you of. The first thought that comes to an addict's mind when using is often how to keep using, not regret. People who use moderately can still have unhealthy relationships with substances without realising it BEST MOMENTS  "I woke up and my first thought was 'Oh shit, I haven't succeeded,' when I survived my suicide attempt." "I hoped my newborn daughter would stay in the hospital overnight so I could keep drinking and 'wet the baby's head.'" "Doing a dance competition in front of 400 people was scarier than boxing." "The best highs require the most effort, which is why relapse is so tempting." "Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that money can't buy." "When the addiction takes hold, all I think about is how to keep drinking, not what I'm missing." I started using drugs to self-medicate to shut my brain down to stop thinking and then spiral turned and turned and turned until I was like a wrecking ball everywhere I went every penny I had went on drugs, my whole life revolved around drugs I tried recovery a couple of times and kept relapsing then I lost my due to suicide, and it was like something clicked in my head that I need to step up to the plate and be the man that my father wanted me to be, and from then on, I've been so as of today's date I am 583 days sober haven't touched any drugs or alcohol or any other mind-influencing substance since then.”   Menace 2 Sobriety, podcast, actor, comedian, sobriety, sober, story, years sober, consequences, behaviour, alcoholism, drug addiction, denial, insecurity, fear-driven,rock bottom, sober, rehab, suicidal, addict, realization, struggle, addiction, rock bottom, denial, curiosity, hope, denial, gratitude, self-awareness,behaviour, guilt, shame, emotions, gratitude, self esteem, gratitude, sober life, drugs, confidence, sobriety, ego, drinking,Sobriety Podcast #wedorecover # recoveroutloud #addicitonrecovery #addiction #recoverytok #sobriety #sober #sobertiktok #sobertok #soberlife #sobercurious #soberliving: https://www.instagram.com/dappersinstagram/This show was brought to you by Progressive Media

Mark is joined by Seann Walsh for a special extended interview, covering everything from getting PTSD after going on a dance show, to what it's like growing up with a father who's a heroin addict – and whether it's a suitable subject for comedy. Plus, why Mark would argue that (whether he thinks he is or not) Seann is actually a political comedian – and a disturbingly accurate impression of Stewart Lee doing a Michael McIntyre routine. EPISODE 237 - Stewart Lee - Me and My Addiction - one man's battle to break free from a life heavily impacted by alcoholismAbout our Guest - I grew up in Exeter, Devon and lived with my parents and 2 older sisters. I didn't really have a troubled life but from a young age I discovered alcohol and my journey into addiction began.Drugs and alcohol consumed my life from that point on. It got so bad that I thought I would either end up in prison, a psychiatric unit or dead. Either by someone else killing me or succeeding in killing myself.I managed to find a way to recover and now live a clean sober life. You could say the complete opposite of how I lived before. I'm hoping now that if I share my experience through writing books I can help to inspire anyone that change is possible. The Book: Me and My Addiction tells the intense, but overall positive, account of one man's battle to break free from a life heavily impacted by alcoholism. This thought-provoking book gives the reader a no holds barred, insight into addictions, and their power to change people's lives, often without the victim realizing until it's too late.Stewart's reflection of the problems around addiction, along with his real, raw and (brutally!) honest stories will open your mind to see life through the eyes of an addict. If you think you, or maybe someone you know, may have an issue with alcohol it provides answers to the questions that many are afraid to ask, a deeper understanding of how addiction works, along with hope that it's possible to break the cycle of destruction and to turn your life around.https://www.stewartleeauthor.co.uk/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. The Balsall Heath Bohemians: Stewart Lee Celebrates the Birmingham Surrealists

Stewart Lee takes us into a world of life-sized chess pieces, alcohol-guzzling nuns and crucified naked bespectacled men. The story of British Surrealism began, not in Bohemian north London, but in a Birmingham suburb. Today, the tradition continues with Birmingham artist Cold War Steve, whose work is featured on the website. His detailed collages evoke the surrealist world of the original Birmingham Surrealists. The seminal moment for British Surrealism was the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition when Salvador Dali donned a diving suit and walked through Piccadilly. But art historian and critic Ruth Millington reveals that the actual crazy beating heart of British Surrealism had already begun. A Birmingham group of artists refused to take part in that Exhibition, viewing the other British artists chosen as ‘overnight surrealists'. The Birmingham group, including Conroy Maddox and John Melville, were the first and truest expression of the movement in the UK, meeting in the Kardohmah café in New Street and the Trocadero pub in Temple Street. Later joined by Emmy Bridgwater and zoologist Desmond Morris - who left a giant elephant skull in Broad Street - they frequented Maddox's house in Balsall Heath. Inside were life-size chess pieces and wallpaper handprinted by an adapted washing mangle. They held parties where communists, Caribbean immigrants and naked women in high heels smashed pottery underfoot. Activities included Maddox being crucified, naked and bespectacled while a nun drank from a two pint bottle of local brew Mitchell and Butler. Maddox wanted to replicate this in shop windows in Birmingham but the Council refused. Stewart Lee explores the creative explosion in the Surrealist court of Birmingham and the art it produced. How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more.   It's episode 272...and I don't like this kind of talk; the things you're saying.   Where exactly do you start with Inland Empire (2006)?   Ostensibly the story of Nikki, an actor cast in a remake of a supposedly cursed film in which the actors were murdered, what follows is a three hour psychological horror tone poem in which fiction and reality repeatedly collide, break down and are rebuilt. Lynch runs the gamut of everything from surreal rabbit sitcoms to surreal Polish neo-realism, with Laura Dern clinging on for dear life at the centre of his artistic hurricane. It might just be a work of genius.   July's David Lynch season concludes with a borderline incomprehensible piece of arthouse cinema as we ask ourselves a series of unanswerable questions: What does it all mean? Is this the ugliest-looking film we've ever watched? How do you survive a painting? Plus, crowbarred comparisons to safer ground as we variously compare it to Mission Impossible and Stewart Lee, and a piece of genuinely scholarly film studies work from one of our patrons.   All of which leads to one question: How would you survive?   Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: This is a story that happened yesterday. But I know it's tomorrow.   Next time out it's Cosmic Horror season, kicking off with John Carpenter's In The Mouth Of Madness (1994).
