Eddie Izzard is a multi-talented artist whose career spans film, theatre and activism. Now she brings her unique brand of charisma and creativity to the Sydney Opera House with one of the world's most enduring tragedies. This is Shakespeare's Hamlet as you've never seen it before. Izzard performs on the blank canvas of a bare stage, letting Shakespeare's words and pure storytelling take the spotlight. Izzard shifts between the play's twenty-three characters with clarity and emotional depth. He's been talking to SBS's Wil Brincat.]]
How do you react to being misunderstood? It's pretty rough, right? In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, Petra Bagust catches up with punk rocker turned Anglican priest, Rev. Spanky Moore, who introduces Petra to an "MRI of the soul" called The Litany of Humility. Sacred texts include works from Eddie Izzard, Nina Simone, Michael Leunig and more. Later in the episode, Petra talks to therapist and author Shirley Pastiroff about where the pain of being misunderstood comes from, and whether seeking to be understood is always the best idea.... A rare audio interview with Dame Katy (transcript below) in which she bares ALLWe're backstage at DKD's one womxn show, in the Barnsley British Region for injured and infirm trans womxn veteransJulie – it's you! They said there was a lady wanting to see me.(Shouts to security) I say Doreen - this ain't no lady - its Julie! Tell her carer we'll be 5 minutes max!Dame Katy, I am beside myself with excitement, here I am in the venue, with a few of my lezzer friends, Talking about how brilliant it is the hour 1970s fashion choices now appear to be briefly trendy again, and I realise it's you on the bill! I was told it was a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute. You were lucky to get past Doreen, Julie. I've just taken her on. She used to work for Chappell Roan but sadly she was a bit too heavy handed. I blame the parents, Doreen wasn't to know that kiddie had brittle bone disease - a head lock never did me no harm!I'd offer you a drink Julie but it looks like you've had enough! It's so good to see you & always in that trusty cardi. What I've always said about you Julie is that you don't give in to trends. Everyone's jabbing away with the Ozempic and here's you looking like you've spent a fortnight on an all inclusive in Benidorm. You're not in the family way are you? I told you to steer clear of Pisshead Pat!So I'm guessing you're wanting another exclusive? Book sales flagging? I was sorry to hear about your last effort. The vicar said it was a book he couldn't wait to put down! Oh by the way I saw your ex husband the other week, that James Dreyfus, he was outside Bargain Booze scratching around the bins trying to bum a fag. He said he'd do owt for £20 so I've got him coming to do the gutters next week.Julie:Thank you Dame Katy, can I just say how fabulous you look and what an amazing show! ‘Puppetry of the Shenis'. Who knew your meat and two veg could be so ambidextrous!DKD:Its attracting rave reviews Julie! There was a queue around the block on press night. You couldn't move for celebrities - I was literally beating off a well known boy band desperate to see a glimpse of my opening. It all started one night when I was watching Channel 4 and this lady, (sporting one of Cher's old wigs and a cheap blouse), was playing the keyboard with her micro penis - the crowd were lapping it up! Well I thought to myself, I've got a least 5 inches on her and if that's what passes for entertainment these days then sign me up!Fast forward a few months and here we are! It's a 2 part show Julie, first half I do impressions with my shenis - Donald Trump, Noel Edmonds, Bob Marley - my ‘No Woman No Cry' leaves folk speechless. Then second half I do expressionist dance to the Greatest Hits of Eurovision - I saw your little eyes light up when I whipped off my skirt during ‘Making Your Mind Up' and you got to see my ‘Ding A Dong'. There's a lot of talk of me transferring to Broadway - mind you, its' me whose doing all the talking!Julie:What about politics Dame Katy. You were strongly rumoured to be standing in the next election.DKD:Standing? Is that a cheap dig? Anyway, it's just a rumour Julie. Granted, I am one of the most impotent voices in queer politics right now but I saw how them Brighton gays treated poor Eddie Izzard. Apparently they saw her as just a joke candidate with a pink beret and a pair of plastic tits. Can you imagine if I won? Working in the House of Parliament? I could end up having a heated three way with Nigel Farage & Zack Polanski (Again!). I haven't got the time anyway Julie, I'm helping out an old friend whose fallen on bad times. You remember that ex P.A turned struggling author pal of mine?Julie:JK Rowling?DKD:She who must not be named! Yes, well she's only been telling folk her little wizarding hustle is being turned into a TV series. You've got to laugh! It'll be like ‘Eldorado' all over again. She's a complete fantasist! But I said I'd help her out with the scripts so I've added a new character into the mix to get the green haired they/them brigade back on side. It's a new Hogwarts Teacher who takes the Gender Queer Studies classes. She's trans, she's a doctor, a Pride of Britain award winner and an ex model. As the series progresses, she takes centre stage with her magical powers - she can literally turn men into women just by saying it! Can you believe that? I know it's a bit far fetched - it makes Stranger Things look like a documentary, but I reckon it will be a big hit with the LGBTQOMDU2+ community who enjoy living in a world of make believe. Some say TV has got too woke and we shouldn't keep on forcing this queer manifesto down people's throats, but I'm not complaining!Julie:I don't know where you find the time Dame Katy. Million selling books, charity endeavours, script writing, cabaret shows... is there no start to your talents?DKDI surprise myself Julie! And you won't believe this - the Royal Mail's been in touch wanting to commemorate me on a stamp! My head literally being licked by thousands! Then there's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here - but do I really want to be dropped into overgrown Australian bush? I bet you wouldn't say no Julie! I'll give it some thought; the money's good but its them challenges that put me off - dark confined spaces, putting dodgy stuff in my mouth - I'm getting flashbacks to the toilets in Heaven 1997! Plus I wouldn't want to risk them putting Boy George back on the show; his luxury item would be a radiator and I'd spend the next 3 week handcuffed to it like some trans Terry Waite!JulieDid you hear the news about your arch nemesis, Lynsay Watson?DKDHear the news? I nearly laughed my bollocks off seeing her being bundled into the back of that Police van, Julie. Absolute state of it. I thought they were nicking Meatloaf at first! Worzel Gummidge's hair was in better nick than that! I've seen some photo filters do some heavy lifting but that's just taking the piss - proof positive that the camera does lie and you can polish a turd! To think she used to be a copper; I bet her helmet was always filthy! But I don't hold a grudge Julie. Someone with skin that looks like the surface of Mars should be pitied really. Plus I'm not a vengeful woman (god strike down anyone one says I am), I've even bought a special chair for her, just needs a few hundred volts putting through it.**knock at the door**I don't get a minute to myself. If that's Fat Tony wanting to borrow 20 grand again they'll be hell to pay. I've got to be up early as they've invited me back on Woman's Hour to discuss the sticky subject of female sperm - apparently folk are resistant to talk about it as it always leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.Watch how you go Julie, there's a man in a beat up old Fiat 500 in the car park, I reckon he sleeps in it. Looks like the lovechild of Jimmy Saville with bad hair plugs, ranting and foaming at the mouth. Tells anyone that listens that he used to read the news on TV - I said ‘yeah, and I shagged Trevor McDonald!'.....Doreen if you could see Julie out, AFTER she's put my purse back! Comedy legend Suzy Eddie Izzard is known for revolutionising the art of the stand-up monologue.
Cortisol is real and its important to focus on the fundamentals rather than get lost in the hype, high protein but at what cost, should you be hanging around with weak ass birds and this is probably the best look-alike I've ever done. Masterpiece. Power Up Here: https://swolenormous.com

Comedy legend Eddie Izzard's material has taken on a life of its own. Now going by Suzy Eddie, she doesn't just tell jokes, she's rewritten history. The comedian, actor, and politician has captivated audiences with a career that has constantly pushed forward, and now she'll be captivating Kiwi audiences, gracing our stages later this year. She's bringing two shows to our shores that couldn't be more different, the Remix Tour in May, and a one-person performance of Hamlet in July. “Just like Shakespeare went from his comedies to his dramas and tragedies, so am I,” she told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame. The Remix Tour has Izzard performing highlights from her 35 year career in stand up comedy, and with so much material to pick from, every night will be unique. “It lives – that's the thing,” she said. “It lives as opposed to, oh it's old and we pull it out and it's the old prayer from before – it's got essences of that, but also new stuff as well.” In contrast, Hamlet is a fair bit more structured – Izzard unable to shift things around from performance to performance, but that doesn't make it a traditional rendition. By its nature, theatre requires an audience to buy into the action more than with film or television, having to use their own imagination to fill in the gaps, and Izzard's is no different. “You get to concentrate, you get to see very clearly the text, the beauty of the poetry, the characters interplay,” she explained. “We've worked very hard on moving ... the juxtaposition of me moving between different characters. There's a subtle change – these are not caricatures, these are characters.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daniel Sloss is a comedian, author, and father. From a 17-year-old at Edinburgh's Stand Comedy Club to causing 100,000 breakups worldwide, Daniel Sloss shares the moments that nearly broke him, and ultimately transformed him, on his journey to becoming one of comedy's most authentic voices. In this episode, Daniel takes us inside the make-or-break moments behind his career, including the night his Netflix specials dropped and he sat reading 3,000 DMs on ecstasy, the devastating spiral of drinking 3/4 bottle of whiskey on stage every night during his global tour, and the moment his wife told him to go back on the road because staying home was driving them both mad.He reveals how his parents drove him to gigs as a teenager and learned he'd lost his virginity by watching his set, why refusing to move to London's "clicky bullshit" scene was the best decision he made, and how Eddie Izzard convinced him to tour Europe when he thought nobody would understand his comedy.Daniel also reflects on the bold move that defined his career - being the only UK comedian to speak out when everyone else stepped back - the price of doing the right thing, and the bittersweet reality of achieving global fame while hating himself at the peak of success. This is a candid conversation about Robot Wars, imposter syndrome, becoming a father, grief, comedy as truth-telling, and why "I'm Daniel and Dad now" matters more than any sold-out show. E. Elias Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire Sometimes it's simply a thrill to watch one your favorite actors let loose and have a great time. F.W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is widely - and deservedly - considered one of the greatest films of all time. A mythology has formed around the making of the film including the idea that its star, Max Shreck, was an actual vampire. With this springboard, writer Steven Katz and director E. Elias Merhige's fashion an exciting, inventive, and thrilling historical re-telling of the making of Murnau's film. With a great supporting cast including Cary Elwes, Eddie Izzard, Udo Kier, and Catherine McCormack as actors and crew of Nosferatu. However the film belongs solely to a pair of unhinged and clearly fun performances from John Malkovich as Murnau, and (in an Academy Award nominated performance) Willem Dafoe as Schreck. For fans of Murnau's classic, silent films, and vampire stories, Shadow of the Vampire is a real treasure. Take a listen to see if you agree. Iain Robertson: The Oasis Insider Who Got Punched by Liam Gallagher (Twice) What really happened behind the scenes with Oasis? Iain Robertson was there—backstage at the fights, the meltdowns, and the madness. In this explosive episode, he reveals how cancel culture would've wiped Oasis out in days, what it was like trying to keep Liam and Noel from tearing each other apart, and how a surreal run-in with Eddie Izzard led to Iain getting literally punched in the face... twice. In this episode I am once again joined by Piers Cross, ex-Buddhist monk, coach, and creator of the documentary “Boarding on Insanity”. Piers explains the British boarding school system, examines its history and social context, and reveals how and why boarding school attendance is seen by many as a pathway to power. Piers recalls his own boarding school experience, the trauma and subsequent breakdown it caused, and describes the dynamic of the “privilege double-bind”. Piers recounts his years as a Buddhist monk, how he navigated suicide attempts and self harm with meditation and community support, and the powerful mystical experiences he encountered during his religious practice. Piers lists over two dozen leading figures in the arts, business, and politics who attended boarding school and reflects on the possibility of a leadership class affected by abandonment and dissociation by elite educational institutions. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep297-boarding-on-insanity-piers-cross Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:05 - Military family upbringing and alcoholic father 03:42 - Going to boarding school at 11 years old 05:36 - History of British boarding schools 08:23 - Pathway to power 10:19 - Oxbridge emphasis 11:37 - The old boys network and breaking parental attachment 14:42 - Is the education better? 17:48 - IQ vs emotional intelligence 20:31 - A typical day at boarding school 23:30 - Piers' boarding school trauma and learning to dissociate 27:07 - Suicide of Piers' best friend 29:37 - Resilience vs dissociation and avoidant attachment 32:48 - Resurfacing trauma in the 30s and 40s 33:28 - Richard Branson, David Cameron, Bear Grylls, and John Peel 34:36 - Trauma of neglect 36:53 - Idealisation, cover up, and not listening to children 41:45 - The privilege double-bind 47:32 - After boarding school & city career 51:03 - Depression and breakdown 53:07 - Laughed at by the doctor 54:31 - Death of Piers' father and work in Africa 56:41 - 3.5 years in a Buddhist monastery 59:37 - A sense of coming home 01:02:22 - Taking the 8 precepts 01:03:30 - Ordination, self harm, and suicidal ideation 01:06:31 - The support and kindness of the other monks 01:09:26 - Struggles with meditation 01:12:03 - Reading scriptures and other Buddhist books 01:14:00 - Tastes of transcendence 01:14:55 - Profound experience of childlike mind 01:16:35 - Healing avoidant attachment 01:20:10 - Working with dreams 01:21:10 - Tears and connecting to emotion 01:22:41 - Buddhist doctrine about suicide and hell 01:25:14 - The power of initiation 01:27:13 - Leaving the monastery 01:28:08 - Piers shows his journal 01:29:33 - After the monastery and work with board school survivors 01:33:15 - “Boarding on Insanity” documentary 01:33:28 - Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, Justin Welby 01:37:05 - Cover ups and a societal flip 01:39:30 - Prince Charles, Stephen Fry, Ranulph Fiennes, Gabriel Byrne, Roald Dahl, Harry Windsor, 01:41:00 - JFK, Princess Diana, Charles Spencer, Aldous Huxley, Richard Beard, Jeremy Paxman, 01:41:26 - Elon Musk, Mini Driver, Eddie Izzard, Princess Catherine, Rupert Murdoch, 01:44:46 - Piers' 3hr daily practice 01:46:44 - Taoist Tantric Arts 01:47:59 - Piers' advice for taking on new practices 01:49:37 - Piers' meditation practice 01:51:02 - Closing remarks and advice for ex-boarders … To find our more about Piers Cross, visit: - https://www.youtube.com/@pierscross - https://www.piers-cross.com/ - https://www.boardingoninsanity.com/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com … Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Put on your laurel wreath. Today we're joining the gods and taking on Kaos, Netflix's new black comedy series that reimagines the Greek myths. The show follows Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) as he struggles to rule over Earth and The Underworld from a gaudy mansion on Mount Olympus. You'll recognize a lot: the Minotaur and Orpheus myths, the fates, the furies, Medusa in middle management and cameos from the likes of Eddie Izzard and Billie Piper. Why are the Greek myths so endlessly popular? What do we want out of our adaptations? And did this one live up? Chechik, the director, well... let's just say, after this disaster, he found himself locked up in movie prison. Tune in as the boys unravel the chaos, question if any pair of leads has ever shared less chemistry, and wonder why in the world you'd hire Eddie Izzard… and not let her talk. The Avengers, directed by Jeremiah S. Dave jokes that it's Megan's big week on Spoilerpiece: She saw all three movies on the docket! First, she fills Evan and Dave in on DOCTOR JEKYLL (2:27), a contemporary update of Robert Louis Stephenson's classic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with Eddie Izzard as Dr. Nina Jekyll (good) and Rachel Hyde (bad). Is it the gothic horror it's laid out to be in the press notes? Or something different? Then Megan talks about SING SING (14:14), a drama based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. Megan loved Colman Domingo's and Paul Raci's performances, and has heaps of praise for the movie. Finally, everyone saw PEAK SEASON (24:48), a comic drama about the bond a burned out New Yorker makes with her fishing guide on a trip to Montana. We all loved it. Over on Patreon, Evan and Dave talk about Robert Altman's 3 WOMEN, which stars Shelley Duvall, who left us in early July.
Joe Stephenson is a British director who made his feature directorial debut with the 2015 film Chicken. His second film was the acclaimed 2018 documentary McKellen: Playing the Part about the life and career of Sir Ian McKellen. Joe's third film is, Doctor Jekyll, an adaptation of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde starring Eddie Izzard from Hammer Films. In this episode, Joe and I delve into the process of reimagining a classic horror story with a modern twist, working with the legendary Eddie Izzard, as well as the past, present and future of Hammer Films. We also get into the many challenges of shooting on a tight budget, how to select locations when shooting in one location, and the hurdles Joe overcame, including epic storms and COVID-19.Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Joe Stephenson.Improvisation Can be MagicalJoe's approach to directing Doctor Jekyll focused on creating an environment where actors could infuse their own creativity into their performances, especially with the movie's star, Eddie Izzard, whose improvisational skills added a unique energy to the character and film. Joe enabled improvisation by first having the actors perform the scenes exactly as they were written in the script, ensuring that they had a solid, reliable version in the can. Only after that was done did he encourage the actors to experiment with their lines and actions, exploring different ways of delivering the scene. This approach gave the film the best of both worlds: a faithful representation of the script and the discovery of new, spontaneous moments. This is a great approach, especially when working with megawatt talents like Eddie Izzard, who can bring more to the scene than is in the script.Find Unique LocationsJoe wanted a location that hadn't been overexposed in other films, and Stanford House near Rugby, UK, provided the perfect setting with its distinctive and untouched appearance, adding to the film's uniquely creepy atmosphere. Shooting in a single location like Stanford House offered multiple benefits. The house's grand, eerie presence played a significant role in setting the film's tone and allowed for visual consistency. Joe also housed the actors on-site, which helped them immerse themselves even more deeply in their roles and the movie's tone.Directing is Problem SolvingThe production of Doctor Jekyll faced numerous unforeseen challenges, from weather issues to the impact of COVID-19. Dealing with the unpredictable English weather forced the crew to constantly adjust their shooting schedule, including canceling a crane shoot due to a severe storm. COVID-19 added another layer of complexity. When the film's gaffer tested positive, a replacement had to be brought in who hadn't worked with the DOP before, disrupting the established workflow and adding stress to an already tight schedule. These challenges, coupled with budget constraints, meant the production was under constant pressure. However, Joe's ability to stay calm and adaptive helped keep the film on track. As my guests have illustrated time and time again, most of filmmaking comes down to being adaptable and resilient, as things will inevitably go wrong, especially on low-budget movies.SHOW NOTESMovies:Doctor JekyllChickenGreat ExpectationsMidas ManBooks/Novellas:Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis StevensonFollow Joe Stephenson at:Instagram: www.instagram.com/joestephenson/X (Twitter):
