Why does 'mean' have so many meanings? Why do poets take metaphor so seriously? Why do objects like pink ghetto blasters make poems live? And why are the filaments of our eyes in the edges of the snow? To answer these surreal, and not so surreal questions - Ian McMillan is joined by Alistair McGowan, Caroline Bird, and Toria Garbutt, and presents an 'eartoon' - a cartoon for the ear, from Richard Poynton (otherwise known as Stagedoor Johnny).Alistair McGowan is an impressionist, actor, writer, pianist, and now - poet. He joins Ian McMillan in a pun-off - the first time such an event has ever been staged on national radio (probably). Alistair's collection of poems is called 'Not what we were expecting' (Flapjack Press).Toria Garbutt is a spoken word artist, poet and educator from Knottingley. She shares tender, funny poems from 'The Universe and Me' (Wrecking Ball Press) many of which take us into her relationship with her sister when they were young, and reveal how much poetry there is in the objects of childhood. Caroline Bird's new poetry collection is called 'Ambush at Still Lake' (Carcanet). She reads poems of motherhood which are like 'upside down jokes' and take 'toddler logic' (like the idea that imaginary carrots have completely run out) to surreal and sinister conclusions. Caroline also presents us with our neon line, a stand-out line from a classic poem, and explores why it works so well. It's this mystery poem which proposes that there are 'filaments of our eyes' in the 'edges of the snow'.Richard Poynton is a writer and performer (also known as Stagedoor Johnny). He stars in his own invention, a backstory for the origin of the English language, which explains why it has so many words with multiple meanings. In this week's Eartoon Richard introduces us to a 'mean' lasagne. (you won't want to meet it down a dark alley).

[TW//Drug Misuse, Suicidal Thoughts] Today I welcome singer, songwriter and author of the Amazon bestseller The Joy of Addiction, Sebastian Wocker. Aged 17, Wocker landed the principal part of Woof in the 1983 European tour of the musical Hair where, suffering teenage angst, low self-worth and low self-esteem, he went into a deep depression and had to throw in the towel after two months. He returned to his safe haven of drugs and alcohol in London, where he auditioned for and got into LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Arts), only to drop out after two days because he 'couldn't stand all those happy clappy prima donnas'. The real reason? He was an addict, hopelessly hooked on drugs and alcohol and didn't want to be found out. Sebastian takes us on a compelling journey down the abyss of alcohol, cocaine, speed, cannabis, hallucinogen and prescribed drug addiction, leading him to various rock bottoms and 'dark nights of the soul'. Then, aged 21, a moment of inspiration: a seed planted by his long suffering mother finally got him into the 12-step programme, offering him the life-changing gift of recovery. For anyone struggling with addiction, he shares how he got himself out and continues to live life, a day at a time — a free man. Having found recovery in 1987, Sebastian formed indie-rock band Yeah in 1990, playing the London, Hamburg and Berlin club circuits. After a five-page interview with Die Zeit Magazine in 1992, Yeah appeared on various radio and TV shows and in 1993 was awarded The John Lennon Talent Award in Hamburg. In 1998 he wrote and produced World Cup Crescendo for TV impressionist Alistair McGowan. In 2002 he signed as a songwriter for Global Chrysalis Publishing, writing numerous songs for Cherry Red Records and Universal Records and released his solo album: Don Sebastiano, The Spaghetti Tree. In 2007 Wocker recorded the soundtrack of German movie Pornorama with Mousse T and, in 2010, was the singing voice for Tobias Menzies in the award winning independent motion picture Forget Me Not. Sebastian has written as a journalist for The Independent, Mr Partner Magazine (Japan), Camden New Journal and Ham and High Express. He is currently journalist and editor of the Hampstead Village Voice and has interviewed various household names including Emma Thompson, Russell Brand, George Graham, Giles Coren and Martin Bell. Wocker is currently recording an audiobook for his best selling book The Joy of Addiction, out on Audible from February 2024 and is writing the sequel: The Joy of Relapse. He is currently the lead singer/song writer of indie band Ridiculous with Jon Moss, Erran Baron-Cohen and Peter Noone. Ridiculous has just recorded their debut single Everybody Loves That Girl at Abbey Road Studios. This week we review Continuity (Series 1 Episodes 5 & 6) A continuity announcer's booth can be a lonely place - especially on the late shift, when you've barely seen your wife and children for a week. But this Radio 4 continuity announcer is a consummate professional, and he's not going to let his own insignificant little problems get in the way of everybody else's listening pleasure - especially when there are so many exciting programmes coming up for him to describe to listeners. Alistair McGowan stars as the continuity announcer brooding on the escalating disasters of his private and professional life at the same time as attempting to give listeners a preview of the programmes on offer in the coming week on Radio 4.Written by Hugh Rycroft.Produced by Frank Stirling & David Spicer.A BBC Production.Continuity may one day be available here: https://bbc.in/2XkftTj The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. This is part 2 of my recording with the fabulous Josh Berry and legendary Alistair McGowan. We discuss the risks involved in doing impressions of the actual people when they're in the same room, the difference between impressions and impersonations, why some voices just appear while others take years to learn, and doing impressions just for our own amusement. Three great sketches with voices that include the Repair Shop crew, Jimmy Carr, Daniel Radcliffe, Jose Mourinho, David Mitchell plus many more – like Prince Harry, Gary Barlow and Hugh Grant – thrown in. Enjoy.
The brilliant Alistair McGowan and Hannah East join us for the first part of this pod. We livestreamed the entire show to YouTube and Facebook and had a lot of fun doing so. It should still be available on the Making An Impression YouTube channel. In this podcast, Hannah explains how she tells her kids off as Sean Dyche, Alistair nails Piers Morgan and Phillip Schofield having done neither publicly before, while Hannah's first attempts at Holly Willoughby and Kate Fleming in our Line Of Duty sketch are equally wonderful. Three sketches in all, loads of impressions, an accent trip through the UK, chat, insights and anecdotes. Enjoy.
Part 2 of this terrific show features the spectacular vocal skills of Alistair McGowan and Kate O'Sullivan. We discuss the difficulties involved in maintaining an impression, Alistair amply demonstrating his mastery of the art in a longish sketch as Chris Packham. Kate excels as Nigella and a host of other characters, while I mostly sit back and leave them to it. Loads of great voices, fascinating chat about how and why we do impressions, plus amazing insights and anecdotes. Enjoy.
Two brilliant impressionists for you. The legend that is Alistair McGowan and the extraordinary young genius Josh Berry. We discuss whether impressionists should tell the audience who they’re about to do, we look, again, at how some impressions flow naturally into others, and how we add little tics and nuances to scripted dialogue to make impressions really fly. Three more great sketches involving football managers, and tennis players, with James Acaster, Stewart Lee and many others thrown in, and Alistair demonstrates his virtuosity by voicing several characters consecutively in the last sketch. Enjoy.
The amazing Alistair McGowan and Kate O'Sullivan tackle three brand new sketches. Tess Daly, Carol Kirkwood, Louis Theroux, Lyse Doucet and Alan Shearer are among the many characters who make an appearance. Alistair drills down into the complexities of Jose Mourinho's accent. Kate reveals the loneliness of the solo performer. We discuss the techniques necessary to do two or three impressions consecutively, while I selflessly takes on a couple of impressions I've never done before. Ahem. Plus there's a fascinating insight into the script editing process. Enjoy.
First impressions matter. Alistair McGowan speaks to Paul Boross about how the serious business of comedy at work can change the way that you are perceived on stage or in the office. This fascinating insight into the use of humour is punctuated with lots of hilarious anecdotes, impressions (over 30 of them!) and lots of laughs. As Alistair says, “Any communication whether it's in business, or in life or in a pub or in bed is about listening. And people love to be listened to.”Enjoy How To Make A Big Impression in Business! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
"Barry from Watford" and paranormalist "Clinton Baptiste" are just 2 of Alex's alter egos that you've likely met. But did you know he's written material for just about every comedy performer in the UK? Hear his story, and the worst impressions of Barack Obama and Tom Cruise ever. Clips performed by: Chris Pavlo, Christopher Kent, Emma Clarke, Lizzie Roper and Beth Chalmers. Alex first worked as an actor as a teenager when he co-starred with Kenneth Branagh in the West End theatre production of Another Country. Since then he has worked continuously in all genres, but is perhaps most well-known as the man behind comedy character Barry From Watford, a regular on Steve Wright's Radio 2 Show, Iain Lee's various radio shows, the Channel 4 TV series Cheap Cheap Cheap with Noel Edmonds, and numerous sell-out live shows and podcasts, the latest of which pairs him with fellow "character" Angelos Epithemiou. He also performs live round the country as the spoof paranormalist from Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights: Clinton Baptiste. As a writer he's written for impressionists Alistair McGowan and Ronni Ancona, for Miranda Hart, Peter Serafinowicz, Watson & Oliver, Ned Sherrin and countless other sketch and comedy shows, as well as creating several pilots for TV and radio shows both as vehicles for himself and for other performers. Posh Spice, Victoria Beckhams, Vicky Adams... today we take a quote from her former music school principal: If Victoria hadn't had the lucky breaks she had and the people having faithin her to make her what she is, she probably would have been singing anddancing on a cruise liner. As part of the BBC Music Get Playing, supporting amateur music making around the UK, 5 leading writers and artists contribute an Essay in this series, in which they talk about their little-known passions for playing an instrument. In the first programme, the impressionist, actor and writer Alistair McGowan describes his attempts to relearn the piano. He started learning as a child but gave it up to play football instead. He tried it again in his 30s but stopped when his TV series "The Big Impression" took over. Then, later on, after a midnight piano lesson on a cruise ship, he began in earnest again and discovered a new world of music-making. Alistair is fascinated by short pieces in particular. His special favourites are the pieces he heard his mother play and also ones he has discovered on piano courses and through hearing them on the radio. A tiny nugget of Satie, Mompou or John Field carries for him all the weight of human experience and channels a musical history into one small but perfect form. more info visit bbc.co.uk/getplaying Producer: Emma Kingsley.

Once strewn with apple, pear and plum orchards the Vale of Evesham has been famous for its fruit since the middle ages. Helen Mark visits the Vale to see the work being done to continue the area's heritage of fruit production. In Pershore she spends the day at the annual plum festival, a celebration of the close association the town has had with the fruit for hundreds of years. Here, she meets comedian and conservationist, Alistair McGowan, and hears about his memories of growing up in the area and lifelong fondness for plums. After the boom years of fruit production in the Vale at the end of the nineteenth century, the 1950s saw a decline in the industry and, since then, almost 80% of the orchards have closed in the area. Helen meets Edward Crowther, whose family has run fruit businesses near Evesham for many generations, and hears about the changes in the Vale during the last century. She joins John Porter at Hipton Hill orchard and learns about the work his conservation group is doing to arrest the decline in the number of traditional orchards in the area and restore them to their former glory. Produced by Beatrice Fenton.
