Episode 332: "A Defence of Penny Dreadfuls" by G. K. Chesterton, Short Story Summer Series Remix

On The Literary Life today we continue our re-airing of a series from our "Summer of the Short Story" that originally aired way back in Season 1 of the podcast! This week's episode features Angelina Stanford and Cindy Rollins discussing G. K. Chesterton's essay "A Defence of Penny Dreadfuls." Angelina opens with a brief history of the Victorian era and the more prevalent availability of the novel to the masses. She also gives several examples of the "penny dreadful." Cindy and Angelina discuss why they agree with Chesterton that people need these simple, even formulaic stories. They remind us that childhood is a time for good books, not a time to worry about reading all the "Great Books." Another topic that Cindy and Angelina chat about is the importance of developing imagination. They talk about the truth that fiction and story-telling are necessary parts of human culture. Cindy highlights the importance of the heroic adventure stories for boys. Angelina brings out the point that the elite critic is out of touch with the masses who long for stories of good winning over evil. The penny dreadful should not be judged as art, since that was never what it was intended to be. If you want to find replays of the 2019 Back to School online conference referenced in this episode, you can purchase them in Cindy's shop at MorningTimeforMoms.com. You can also find out about all the current classes and summer events happening at HouseofHumaneLetters.com. For the full show notes on this episode, please visit https://theliterary.life/332.

Let's go back in time for a whistle-stop tour of three crimes ranging from the brutal to the mysterious. In this episode I'm joined by Manon Burz-Labrande, who researches into the circulation of penny bloods and penny dreadfuls. We talk about how her research looks at how there are issues around canonicity, due to many publications being hidden still, meaning we return to the 'classics' . We observe how there were different ways of circulation beyond publishing, and how contemporary sources like Henry Mayhew reported on this. This leads to the different ways of consuming stories, communal reading, giving and lending books, and oral storytelling traditions. About my guest: Manon Burz-Labrande is a doctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of Vienna, Austria. Specialising in Victorian popular literature and culture, her PhD focuses on the exploration of the concept of circulation in and of the penny bloods and penny dreadfuls, through a literary and cultural analysis of their literary content, the discourses they triggered in nineteenth-century criticism, their place in the Victorian literary landscape and their circulation into Neo-Victorian fiction. She has written articles and reviews for Victorian Popular Fictions Journal, Polysèmes, Revenant Journal and Wilkie Collins Journal, entries for the Palgrave Encyclopedia of Victorian Women's Writing (ed. Lesa Scholl), and two chapters in upcoming edited collections on Victorian popular fiction. Her broader research interests include sound studies and the Gothic, and in 2021 she co-edited a special issue for Short Fiction in Theory & Practice entitled “More than Meets the Ear: Sound & Short Fiction.” She is also the managing editor of the forthcoming London's East End: A Short Encyclopedia, edited by Kevin A. Morrison (McFarland, 2022). “Run, Forest, run!”.

Summary After going to Ardham County, Hippolyta’s journey of discovery continues through time and space after unlocking the secrets of Hiram’s Orary. Elsewhere, Atticus and his father’s relationship hits a new low as he encounters Montrose and Sammy at his dad’s flat while looking for information about his mother’s side of the family. As Tic attempts to track down the Book of Names in St Louis he is warned by Leti that Hippolyta has the Orary and could be in danger. At a space observatory in Kansas, Hippolyta activates the device, just as members of Captain Lancaster’s police have her at gunpoint. Atticus arrives to help his Aunt but during the fight with the cops a rip in space and time opens up and both Tic and Hippolyta are flung through the tear. From the Kansas observatory to a high tech “cell” with the being “I am” Hippolyta is then teleported to Paris to dance with Josephine Baker, from there Hippolyta travels onwards to ancestral Africa (with Confederate soldiers) and further into the sci-fi world of her daughter’s comics with George. Her odyssey through multiple worlds is transformative and empowering as she learns about her thoughts, her feelings, her desires and ultimately who she is and what freedom means.
