In the first episode of Medical Ethics Unpacked, hosts Steve Levine, MD, and Dominic Sisti, PhD, examine the profound ethical and clinical challenges surrounding medically assisted suicide, or medical assistance in dying (MAID), for individuals with severe psychiatric conditions. Dr. Sisti, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, interrogates pivotal questions central to this debate, including whether psychiatric disorders can be deemed terminal and whether individuals with such conditions possess the requisite capacity to make autonomous decisions regarding MAID. Drawing on data from jurisdictions such as Belgium and the Netherlands, he highlights critical concerns, including gender disparities, inconsistent capacity evaluations, and the societal risks of expanding access to psychiatric euthanasia without addressing structural deficiencies, such as inadequate mental health care systems or pervasive social inequities. Dr. Levine, a psychiatrist, explores the complex and dynamic nature of capacity assessments, emphasizing the episodic and often treatable trajectory of psychiatric conditions such as major depressive disorder and anorexia nervosa. He reflects on the potential for recovery facilitated by novel treatments, such as ketamine or psychedelics, juxtaposed with the limitations and gaps in current psychiatric care. Together, the hosts deliberate on the ethical implications of mandating exhaustive treatment attempts, including experimental options, before permitting MAID, balanced against the imperative to respect patient autonomy. Through a rigorous and nuanced discussion, Drs. Levine and Sisti advocate for the establishment of robust ethical frameworks, equitable practices, and comprehensive capacity evaluations. Their discourse challenges societal and professional norms, encouraging reflection on autonomy, human suffering, and the intrinsic value of life in the context of this ethically fraught issue. Craig Northey, lead singer of Odds, joined Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji on the show earlier this year. Canadian rock band Odds released their seventh studio album, "Crash the Time Machine," co-produced by Steven Page earlier this year. The album explores themes of struggle and community, showcasing the band's evolution into new musical directions while maintaining their dark ironic signature. The first track, "Staring at a Blank Page," is described as defiantly joyful, offering a perspective on overcoming immovable obstacles by altering one's own outlook. Singer and guitarist Craig Northey emphasizes the significance of friendship as a form of immortality, acknowledging the collaborative influence of friends, including the late John Mann of Spirit of the West, on the album. The band, consisting of Northey, bassist Doug Elliott, drummer Pat Steward, and guitarist Murray Atkinson, reflects on their musical journey, rooted in the present but informed by a rich past dating back to their founding in 1987. Odds gained recognition with their 1991 debut, "Neopolitan," and continued to achieve success with Gold-selling releases like "Bedbugs" in 1993 and Platinum-selling "Good Weird Feeling" in 1995. After a hiatus in 1999, they regrouped in 2007 to embark on the second chapter of their recording career with the release of "Cheerleader" in 2008.

Multiple Time New York Best Selling authors Brandon Webb(@BrandonWebb) and John Mann(@JohnMann) share how real life meets fiction in their successful collaboration of the action-packed thriller series Blind Fear, Cold Fear, and Steal Fear. "Often times, as we learn, the story in our head is much worse than the actual activity." - Brandon Webb Key Takeaways: Mental Management: Training and focusing the mind is a daily practice that empowers the individual to concentrate in times of chaos, be aware of the intention behind actions, and stay in a positive and empowered mindset. The tools of mental management are visualization, positive self-talk, and reframing memory. Also, if you have skills and time and want to be of service, becoming a mentor to someone is an excellent way of being sheepdog strong. Positive Partnerships: Fostering relationships for work or personal matters creates a more prosperous and happy life. Learning to collaborate with others means seeing what you are good at and what they are good at and then trusting one another to execute efficiently and effectively to get the job done. Education: Children are naturally curious and want to learn. Our school systems in the United States need a curriculum that includes critical thinking, exploration, and actual learning. An American MiG-23 pilot reveals long-held secrets in this in-depth conversation about a declassified program, Constant Peg. On today's show, we'll meet John Mann who flew in the first-of-its-kind adversary training program, Constant Peg, and take a deep dive into some of the most popular questions we got from you, our listeners. Established in 1977, this top-secret program aimed to train American pilots against the very same MiGs they may one day see in combat. Mann was an instructor who flew the MiG-21 and 23, and co-host John Barry flew in the program as a trainee. This one is going to be cool!If you missed Part One, check that out on Wings Over the Rockies YouTube channel: America's Secret MiG-23s | Behind the Wings - YouTube.Episode 30 marks the end of Season 3 of the Behind the Wings Podcast. We'll be taking a short break and will be back in the new year for Season 4.Key Takeaways: John Mann served 24 years in the US Air Force where he had the opportunity to fly many aircraft, including the F-4, F-15, MiG-21, and MiG-23. Mann first flew as a trainee at Constant Peg and later flew the MiGs as a trainer. The MiG-23 was a very fast, beefy airplane, but it didn't turn well. Pilots would attend to overcome "Buck Fever", learn how the MiGs flew, and practice dogfighting. The maintainers at Constant Peg were the backbone of the program, facing specific challenges sourcing parts, with no maintenance book, and often receiving aircraft that were in a compromised condition. John Mann's advice: There are lots of opportunities in aviation. Go pursue your dreams!
