For this week's bonus episode, we're joined by friend of the show Gareth Dennis to discuss the upcoming 'infrastructure reforms' that could obviously make a huge difference, if done intelligently, but... don't seem to be shaping up that way. Today's ep is very much a 'part two' of what happened at May's London residency show, and joining in the fun is the fantastic Kate Cheka! Kate kicks things off with an epic tale of criminal activity taking place in salubrious, if rather seedy surroundings. We then hear about a case which for those involved really is the pits, while today's audience crime left some would be thieves fearing what may be on the cards for them. The Drunk Women are LIVE all over the UK this summer ...You can see them at their London Residency on 27th June. We're at the penultimate show of the current run at The Museum of Comedy and we're joined by the fantastic Hal Cruttenden, who tells us about the time he (technically) broke the law to stop a crime, which also shows some unlikely bad cop credentials. The team then gets involved with a case involving a couple called 'Colin and Mary' - and how often can you say THAT? Finally, a member of the audience shares some impressive skills at thief shaming and probably making them rethink their life on the wrong side of the tracks! In this episode of the Open Mic Comedy Podcast, host Marc sits down with comedian Sam Love for a wide-ranging and insightful conversation about life on the comedy circuit. Sam shares his journey into stand-up, from the thrill of his earliest gigs to the tough lessons learned from bombing on stage. The pair dig into the craft of joke writing, the challenge of finding your comedic voice, and the shared highs and lows that come with performing for live audiences. They also explore the realities of the open mic scene, including bringers, pay-to-play model, the pressures faced by promoters, and the ongoing push for more diversity in comedy. Sam opens up about his creative process, his podcast The Chapstick Boys, and his experience performing at the Edinburgh Fringe and preparation for the next one. There's even time for a bit of fun, as he takes on the challenge of telling a joke from a book of notoriously bad gags.Throughout the episode, Sam reflects on the importance of authenticity, the role of blogging in comedy, and his ambitions for the future. It's a candid, funny, and thoughtful look at what it really means to build a career in stand-up comedy.LINKS:Open Mic Comedy Pod: https://www.instagram.com/openmiccomedypodSam Love: https://www.instagram.com/samuellove1992Chapstick Boys Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/2VRtM7salNCcZBjPk1IM5q?si=6f7419b0b3424455————————Music: https://www.purple-planet.comVoice Over Segment: John Pape - https://www.johnpape.co.uk/

Another day, another crime to solve and to help us do just that is actor and comedian, Bebe Cave! Bebe joins us on possibly the most contrasted day of her life and hits the ground running by opening a tin and tonic and telling us about her involvement in possibly one of the most cursed houses in London. Today, we welcome a comedian and TV host who has taken a brilliantly simple idea for a show - funny people trying to complete funny tasks - and turned it into a global phenomenon. And it's all been thanks to not taking yourself, or life, too seriously: it's comedian, TV host and author, Alex Horne!Alex joins us from, you guessed it, the Taskmaster house for a chat about how the show's gone from an idea at the Edinburgh Fringe to sold-out theatre shows, global adaptations and eighteen series of hilarious TV. Plus, we hear more about Alex's life away from the funniest throne in TV - from the importance of making time for loved ones to men trying to be a bit more open and how plenty of life's best lessons come from failure. Plus, we frantically work out a plan for his debut Glastonbury performance NEXT WEEK!For all the latest news, click here to follow us on Instagram!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. It means a great deal to the show and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Thanks!*** Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today, Hannah and Taylor are joined by podcaster and presenter Remel London, who came to DWSC HQ brimming with theories for a delicious sounding - if carb heavy - case of a legendary Victorian character who if alive today would be enjoying sell out runs at the Edinburgh Festival.* Remel also shares a story from her childhood in which her mother wasted no time in pointing the finger at a potential suspect, why let 'evidence' be a factor if you've got a hunch? And finally, this episode's listener crime gives us an insight into the world of Mormons AND Chuck E. Cheese.…every day's a school day! * And you can also see Taylor and Hannah at this year's Edinburgh Fringe - details below! The Drunk Women are LIVE all over the UK this summer ...You can see them at their London Residency on 27th June. One-Act Play Collections - Book 10, Part 1 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 10 Overview: The tenth volume of one-act plays in the public domain is read by a variety of LibriVox members. A one-act play is a play that has only one act and is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One-act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. A few notable examples of one-act plays emerged before the 19th century including various versions of the Everyman play and works by Moliere and Calderon. One act plays became more common in the 19th century and is now a standard part of repertory theatre and fringe festivals. Tom Mills and Dan Hind talk to us about their work on what a functioning BBC might look like, and how that's less about finding the exact right political balance (any day now, surely!) and more about ownership structure and material factors. Sam Nicoresti: Self-Expression, Identity & the Hunt for the Perfect Skirt SuitIn this introspective and fun-filled episode, Steve Otis Gunn sits down with comedian and writer Sam Nicoresti for a conversation that winds its way through comedy, culture, and surreal nostalgia. Known for their clever, genre-bending comedy and a flair for philosophical riffs, Sam brings nuance and wit to everything from trans politics to the demise of Blockbuster, weaving personal experience with cultural critique in a way that's as thought-provoking as it is hilarious. From probing selfhood and societal labels to skewering podcast culture, Sam shows how comedy is the sharpest tool for exploring—and exploding—identity.Subjects include:What makes a “special” specialHow HMV pivoted away from physical media and adapted to the digital ageWhy true crime is the new voyeurism, and podcasts might well be to blameThe constraints of class and the claustrophobic architecture of social housingWhy something as simple as needing the loo can become a gendered battlegroundAn amusing and surprising listen, this episode is a must for fans of stand-up comedy, social commentary, and anyone curious about how comedy reflects the oddities of modern life.

Tonight we mark Women Veterans Day, which is observed annually on June 12 to commemorate the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act into law by President Truman in 1948. This act allowed women to serve permanently in the regular armed forces. To help us honor this anniversary, we invite playwright Ash Singer, whose recent documentary theater play, In Their Footsteps brings to life the true stories of five American women—two military officers and three civilian volunteers—who served during the Vietnam War. Joining Ash will be Ann Kelsey, whose story is dramatized in the play, along with other women featured. Developed from in-depth oral histories, the script captures their poignant, humorous, and harrowing experiences, shedding light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in wartime. The performance immerses audiences in the personal narratives of Ann Kelsey, Judy Jenkins Gaudino, Doris “Lucki” Allen, Jeanne “Sam” Christie, and Lily Adams. Through innovative staging and modular set pieces that transform into various wartime settings—such as bunkers, rooftops, and military vehicles—the play delves into themes of service, resilience, and the psychological toll of war, including issues like sexual harassment and PTSD. Since its initial workshop in New York City in 2017, In Their Footsteps has had an impressive run: 2018: Featured in the East to Edinburgh Festival at 59E59 Theaters in NYC and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. 2019: Performed at the BorderLight International Fringe Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Women's Overseas Service League annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. 2020–2021: Adapted into a Zoom production and a radio play in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding its reach to schools and veteran organizations. 2021: Presented at the OnStage! Festival in Milan and Rome, Italy. The production is set to return in Fall 2025 with a new run at the Bronx Music Hall, offering an even more immersive experience. Plans are also underway for a 2025–26 tour of New York City schools and a multi-city U.S. tour, aiming to engage diverse audiences through performances, discussions, and educational workshops. In 2020, IVP collaborated with WLIW-FM to produce a radio adaptation of In Their Footsteps, which premiered on NPR station 88.3 WLIW-FM Long Island. This adaptation, titled “Revisiting ‘In Their Footsteps' in Honor of Dr. ‘Lucki' Allen,” earned a 2025 Gracie Award for Excellence in Radio Programming. The Gracie Awards, presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, honor exemplary programming created by, for, and about women. The radio play features authentic soundscapes and the voices of the original women, providing listeners with an intimate and powerful portrayal of their experiences. It serves as a testament to the enduring impact of these women's stories and the importance of preserving their legacy through various media. For more information or to listen to the radio play, visit WLIW-FM's website. We're grateful to UPMC for Life for sponsoring this event!

One-Act Play Collections - Book 9, Part 1 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 9 Overview: The ninth volume of one-act plays in the public domain is read by a variety of LibriVox members. Greg surprised a bunch of the Moore Student Radio team with a celebrity guest during a tour of the Radio 1 Big Weekend studio in Liverpool. They had no clue Miley was about to appear live on screen. They didn't believe it was the real Miley Cyrus. There were a lot of emotional Hannah Montana fans in the room. Introducing Becky the Wasp Biologist. She wrote a song for the Edinburgh Fringe from the perspective of a wasp and we have the exclusive first play on Radio 1. Becky says they are misunderstood and she's rooting for all wasps. Apparently she's got a catalogue of songs about wasps. Watch this space. You heard it here first. Katie Thistleton and Vick Hope are off on maternity leave this summer so Jamie's wife Sophie is joining him on Radio 1 in the afternoons. She thinks she's the only person on the planet who can put up with him for 3 hours a day every day. It's live so wish them luck. Greg flossed his teeth with Charlie Hedges hair when they hugged at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool. Not weird at all. Now that's out there let's get on with ThursWAAAAHAAY business. What's making you wahhaahhhaay today? It's clumsy runner Nat's turn on Yesterday's Quiz. She wants to beat her husband Marcus, which TBH is a low bar. Flop Flips is probably the best answer to the question – what are flip flops called in Australia. (It's thongs). No spoilers here for All The Latest Things. IYKYK.
