In today's episode we speak with filmmaker John Morena. A New York City native; born in The Bronx, migrated to Brooklyn. His films have screened worldwide including several official selections to Oscar® qualifying festivals such as Annecy, Ottawa, Hiroshima, Anima Mundi, Animafest Zagreb and the International Children's Festivals in both Chicago and New York. He is currently in production on a feature-length anthology film called Films For No One. With a solid filmography of funny, quirky animated films under her belt, including 'My Favourite Things That I Love', 'Penguins Behind Bars', 'Invasion of the Space Lobsters' and the Oscar nominated 'Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin', Janet's work over the years has also included contributions to 'Sesame Street', the NFB's 'ShowPeace' series and the collaborative project 'Pink Komkommer'. This week her latest NFB film 'The Girl with the Red Beret' is playing at Animafest Zagreb as part of their Time For The Masters programme, which showcases recent work by some of the biggest stars of animation. The film is a love letter to Montreal in which a girl encounters an array of colourful, extravagant characters across the city's metro stations, set to a re-orchested take on Kate and Anna McGarrigle's 'Complainte pour Ste-Catherine'. A curta-metragem que vai ser exibida no CineAvante conta uma história sobre fraternidade, memória e comunidade cujo o ponto de partida é uma conversa de família sobre o tio Botão da realizadora, um homem nascido em Belmonte, que foi obrigado a lutar na Guerra Colonial e emigrou para França. O início da conversa no Quintas do Avante podia começar pela justificação do júri de Zagreb: “Muitas coisas nos impressionaram neste filme. O naturalismo do diálogo. O calor e a intimidade do ambiente familiar. Mas, acima de tudo, a ternura com que conta a sua história de generosidade no meio das dificuldades políticas e económicas em Portugal. E o macaco, também".

Lucija Mrzljak is a Croatian an illustrator and animation director, based in Estonia.She studied at the Academy of Fine arts in Zagreb and made her first film experimental films in a collective laboratory preserving analog film practices. She went to the fine art academy in Prague where she focused on illustration, printing and book design. And in 2016, she graduated in animation as a student of Priit and Olga Pärn, with two graduation films "Shuma" and "Corner". From that, she has collaborated on and directed several animated short films in Eesti Joonisfilm in Tallinn and Adriatic Animation in Zagreb, including "A Demonstration of brilliance in four acts" and recently "The Stork", who won the public award and a jury special mention at Animafest Zagreb. Presenting the third episode of 'Intimate Animation' season 2, brought to you by the online animation magazine skwigly.com Join Skwigly's Ben Mitchell and Laura-Beth Cowley as they explore, discuss and interview the talents behind animation that deals with adult themes of love, relationships and sexuality. In this episode we welcome Canadian comic artist/filmmaker Diane Obomsawin. Also known by her pen-name Obom, Diane has been a staple of the Montreal underground comics scene since the mid-80s. Among her most recent comic projects is "J'aime les Filles", a collection of ten reflections by women on their first loves, four of which having been recently adapted into the animated short film "I Like Girls". Produced by Marc Bertrand at the National Film Board of Canada, the film has already been critically acclaimed and garnered the Grand Prize for Independent Short at last year's OIAF. "I Like Girls" will be screening at Animafest Zagreb next week and is also part of the official selection of this year's Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
