In recognition of International Children's Day on June 1st — a day dedicated to the rights and wellbeing of children worldwide — I'm thrilled to welcome back registered nutritionist Fern Rodriguez to The Eating for You Podcast. As we celebrate the importance of nourishing our children and ourselves in every sense of the word, Fern and I dive into one of the most common parenting challenges: mealtimes with picky eaters. Fern, a specialist in avoidant eating and food literacy, shares her compassionate and practical approach based on the Division of Responsibility — a method that transforms food struggles into peaceful, respectful family meals. But here's something that's often overlooked: how your own eating habits — and emotions around food — might have been shaped at your childhood table too. This is why this podcast is for everyone wanting to change unhelpful eating habits for good. Fern and I explore how to let go of pressure, build trust at the table, and work with your child (rather than for them) when it comes to food. If you've ever felt concerned about your child's eating habits or overwhelmed by food refusal, this episode offers insight, relief, and a path forward grounded in understanding and mindfulness. This episode also invites you to reflect on your own experience of food as a child and how unconscious food rules are influencing your own eating habits, and those in your family. It is a kind and patient reflection on how eating habits start, and how we can change them for good.Struggling with fussy eating?Fern's website: https://www.eatplaylearnnutrition.comGrab Fern's free 5-week email series + eBook with her Top 5 Strategies to Stop Fussy Eating.

Shanghai Disney Resort unveiled new smoking control measures on Monday during an outdoor smoking control roundtable, aimed at enhancing visitor experience and park operations. The new measures, taking effect on May 29 ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31 and International Children's Day on June 1, include reducing designated smoking areas, upgrading no-smoking signage, and implementing a reminder card system. Following a comprehensive review and assessment of existing smoking points, the resort will eliminate 24 smoking areas, cutting the total number by about half. Shanghai Disneyland will have 11 designated smoking areas. The adjustments focus on high-traffic zones where non-smoking visitors previously reported unavoidable exposure to smoke, and heavily congested secondary pathways. Several smoking points, including those near the main park entrance, will be relocated to optimize guest flow. The resort's guest rules and regulations strictly prohibit smoking throughout the park except in designated areas, covering traditional tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and any other products that produce vapor or smoke. The resort will implement a comprehensive update of its smoking-related signage. More than 2,800 "No Smoking" signs will be installed throughout the resort, including Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown, Wishing Star Park, Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel. The signs will feature both traditional and e-cigarette symbols and will be themed to match different areas of the resort. Staff training on smoking control will be intensified, with cast members receiving updated instruction on second-hand smoke risks, intervention methods, and current government policies. They will be equipped with bilingual reminder cards featuring QR codes directing visitors to the nearest designated smoking areas. As part of the resort's "Star Guest" program promoting civilized behavior, the resort has installed posters featuring Chief Bogo from Zootopia throughout the property, reminding guests to respect others by smoking only in designated areas. Updated smoking area information will be accessible through the resort's official platforms including its website and app. Visitors are advised to familiarize themselves with and follow the rules and regulations before visiting.

I'm so glad you've joined me at the intersection of faith and true crime here at The Unlovely Truth. Security issues are hiding in every church - do you know where to look for them? I'm your host, church safety advocate Lori Morrison. Our churches need to be the safest places in our communities, so our mission here is to find actionable steps that will make our churches sanctuaries of physical, emotional, and spiritual safety. To give you tools to help make that happen in your church, we're going to investigate real crime stories from real churches. I've got three cases for us to investigate today, so let's dive right in.    Highlights from this episode include:   A church treasurer and a pastor managed to embezzle tens of thousands of dollars from their respective churches due to lack of proper checks and balances in financial management. Learn how your church can avoid a similar tragedy. You'll discover a little thought about cyber-security threat and how you can protect your church from more than the loss of sensitive data. Hint: it's your public Wifi. Are controvertial comments from the pulpit a risk to half of your congregation's emotional safety - and could they even border on spiritual abuse?   James 3:9-12 speak directly to this type of communicating. I'm going to read from the International Children's Bible to make it as simple as possible so you can share it with anyone who thinks this behavior is ok.   We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people. And God made them like himself. Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My brothers, this should not happen. Do good and bad water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree make olives? Can a grapevine make figs? No! And a well full of salty water cannot give good water.   Just a few verses prior to this, in James 3:1, James says “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” I'd say that we can extend that logic to pastors as well. Any pastor that would say such degrading things about half of the world's population has no place in leadership. Do you think that's too harsh? Would you think that if rather than being of a sermon, these words had been spoken directly to your daughter or some other woman you care deeply about? If that would be seen as abusive, then saying it from the stage should be looked at as being much, much worse   Visit my website to access more episodes. Charlotte, 18, is a high school senior in Washington, D.C., where she resides with her parents, Sarah and U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jason Tama, and her 16-year-old sister. Charlotte views military life as a series of adventures, having participated in unique experiences such as marching with Coasties in the New York City Veterans Day parade and viewing Fourth of July fireworks from the deck of a Coast Guard ship in New York Harbor. During her father's career, Charlotte has experienced six permanent change of station moves, which have taught her the importance of diving into new situations with confidence. Charlotte believes that engaging in school, sports, extracurricular activities, community service, and faith-based groups is crucial for making connections and feeling at home in new places. “Getting involved…will help you form connections in your new community and make a new place feel more like home,” she said.   Isabella is Operation Homefront's 2024 Military Child of the Year® for the Marine Corps. The 17-year-old senior resides in Temecula, California, volunteers with a local peer court program that offers juveniles a hands-on understanding of the judicial system, including roles from juror to attorney. She also cultivates her knowledge of the law through her school's Mock Trial team and an internship at a local law firm. Isabella is the daughter of Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Arrieta, an aircraft mechanic instructor with the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit North Island, and Denise Arrieta, who works as an alternative education clerk. Isabella has a 12-year-old sister. One of her most cherished memories is of pinning her father's uniform during his last promotion ceremony, a moment that underscored the pride she feels for her family's military service and the sacrifices that come with it. “I was so proud to be his daughter,” Isabella recalled. She equally admires her mother for her role in supporting the family through financial challenges and periods of separation due to her father's deployments. Isabella credits her mother's strength and resilience for forming the foundation of her own character and achievements.   Lindsay is Operation Homefront's 2024 Military Child of the Year® for the Navy. Lindsay, 18, is the daughter of Navy veterans Shaun and Keri Carstairs. Shaun retired as a captain after a distinguished career of 25 years, and Keri served for 13 years, achieving the rank of commander before her honorable discharge in 2011. Both parents have medical backgrounds, with Shaun working as an emergency physician, and Keri as a pediatric emergency physician and healthcare executive. Lindsay has an older brother, Ian. Despite her parents' medical expertise, the diagnosis of Jeavons Syndrome when Lindsay was 8 years old presented significant challenges. The disease was difficult to control. Epilepsy was not just a physical hardship for Lindsay but also a mental and emotional challenge. She worried about what her classmates would think of her each time an ambulance came to the school because of her seizures. Lindsay's early adversities inspired her to co-found a local International Children's Advisory Network (iCAN) chapter at Rady Children's Hospital, where she was a patient.  “I am proud to have started (a chapter) for my community,” Lindsay said. “I dedicated many hours to establishing our chapter. We recorded this episode of Speaking Out of Place on Saturday the 18th of November, 2023, as Israel's massive attack on Gaza passed the 40-day mark. Almost immediately after the deadly October 7 Hamas attack, the image of the child, both Israeli and Palestinian, began to dominate the media's coverage, and appeals to international humanitarian law were made to “save the children.” Azeezah Kanji and I decided to create this podcast to coincide with November 20, International Children's Day, in order to take a deeper look at why such appeals to the law must be contextualized both historically and politically. Hedi Viterbo is an associate professor of law at Queen Mary University of London in the UK. Do you think you could turn your own father in to the police? What if I told you that you found out that he had abused children? Could you then? Would it make a difference if one of those children was your own sister, and others were children at the church where your father was the preacher? That's the dilemma today's guest faced And it changed the course of his life. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 5. Our book this week is The Devil Inside and our guest is author and pastor Jimmy Hinton.  Everyone wants a father they can look up to. A father who shows them love and teaches them right from wrong. Jimmy Hinton had a dad like that. He also had a dad who molested dozens of children. It's hard to imagine one man had these two sides to him. Jimmy consults with churches who are dealing with leaders who have done things similar to what his father did. Many say, “But you don't know how much good this man has done for the church”. I love the way Jimmy responds by saying “And you don't know how much evil he's done either”. If you're a leader in your church I urge you to get this book. There's a link below so you can find it easily. I want to read a quote directly from the book that I think is a call to action we can no longer ignore. “Our kids can't afford for us to sit idly by, hoping someone else will step up to the plate to protect them. Idleness hasn't worked for generations, and it's not working now. So now is the time for Christians to act. The church's record on abuse should embarrass us. When secular researchers rightly name the church as the most dangerous place for children, it ought to spark a fight inside every one of us." Most of us are probably familiar with the first verse of Psalm 89 from the old hymn “I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord”. I have put a link below to a video of a bunch of cute kids singing it so you can remember who we are trying to protect with this episode. I want to focus on verse 14, and it seems only right to read it from the International Children's Bible translation:  Your kingdom is built on what is right and fair. Love and truth are in all you do. How can we, as the church, tell others about the wonders of God's kingdom if we don't do what is right and fair? It's not right to cover for people who abuse children, or anyone else. Yet we've seen it happen again and again in Catholic and Southern Baptist churches, and it's happening elsewhere and just not getting as much media attention. It's not fair to our flock to let them think they are safe when we aren't doing all we can to make that so.  But it doesn't have to be that way! I know that some of you listening are in churches that are getting it right - and I want to hear what you're doing. Unfortunately some churches are not placing as much importance on the safety of our children as we should. I want to hear from you too. Tullberg Sermon text: Matthew 18:21-35 An Unforgiving Servant 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, when my brother sins against me, how many times must I forgive him? Should I forgive him as many as 7 times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, you must forgive him more than 7 times. You must forgive him even if he does wrong to you 70 times 7. 23 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who decided to collect the money his servants owed him. 24 So the king began to collect his money. One servant owed him several million dollars. 25 But the servant did not have enough money to pay his master, the king. So the master ordered that everything the servant owned should be sold, even the servant's wife and children. The money would be used to pay the king what the servant owed. 26 “But the servant fell on his knees and begged, ‘Be patient with me. I will pay you everything I owe.' 27 The master felt sorry for his servant. So the master told the servant he did not have to pay. He let the servant go free. 28 “Later, that same servant found another servant who owed him a few dollars. The servant grabbed the other servant around the neck and said, ‘Pay me the money you owe me!' 29 “The other servant fell on his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me. I will pay you everything I owe.' 30 “But the first servant refused to be patient. He threw the other servant into prison until he could pay everything he owed. 31 All the other servants saw what happened. They were very sorry. So they went and told their master all that had happened. 32 “Then the master called his servant in and said, ‘You evil servant! You begged me to forget what you owed. So I told you that you did not have to pay anything. 33 I had mercy on you. You should have had the same mercy on that other servant.' 34 The master was very angry, and he put the servant in prison to be punished. The servant had to stay in prison until he could pay everything he owed. 35 “This king did what my heavenly Father will do to you if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” The Holy Bible, International Children's Bible® Copyright© 1986, 1988, 1999, 2015 by Thomas Nelson. It's become crystal clear that we need to change our approach to tackling the climate crisis, to work in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, Nations and knowledge keepers. As historic stewards of nature, they have rich insights, expertise, and perspectives to share about how we might move forward. But that doesn't just mean collaborating with Indigenous elders or scientists. We also need to listen to and learn from Indigenous youth who will be the stewards of the future. That's why I'm so excited to have Autumn Peltier join me on the show. There are two undeniable characteristics of a terrorist state: Killing and kidnapping children. Russia does both. Even on International Children's Day, Russian bombs killed a child in Kyiv. Before invading, Russia prepared a disinformation campaign to justify kidnapping and deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. That says a lot about what this war is actually about. This is genocide according to article II(e) of the 1948 genocide convention, and it's why the West needs to arm Ukraine to win the war and bring prosecutions against the war criminals. Ukraine needs to have the military power and ability to project power enough to enable it to bring back all its kidnapped children from the occupying state.
