Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this dramatic Japanese thriller from Akira Otani. Cindy Kay's steely voice ensures the listener feels every bit of tension in this short and memorable audiobook. After Yoriko Shindo is kidnapped, she finds herself forced into working for an arm of the yakuza—she has to serve as the driver for Shoko, the daughter of the brutal boss. It's a violent, disturbing world that Shindo is pulled into, but she's unusually tough, and listeners hear her taunt her attackers as she fights back. Slowly, Shindo and Shoko form a sort of friendship, putting them both at risk. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Recorded Books. In Episode 24 of the podcast I speak with Shoko Baba, a member of the international sales team, of one of the snow country's most celebrated sake breweries, Hakkaisan. Located in the heavy snow area of Minami-Uonuma, Hakkaisan Brewery produces high quality sake that reflects the pristine surrounding environment and traditions of this beautiful area of Niigata. Shoko and I discuss the heritage and pedigree of Hakkaisan including their celebrated snow-aged ‘Yukimuro' sake, while also delving into the importance of sake in the culture of Niigata and more broadly, in Japan. We discuss Hakkaisan's fantastic Rydeen Beer and their wonderful facility Uonuma-no-Sato, along with exciting enterprises including Niseko Distillery in Hokkaido and Brooklyn Kura in New York. The brewery takes its name from nearby Mount Hakkai or in Japanese, Hakkaisan. Standing 1778 metres / 5834 feet in height, Hakkaisan is home to the little-known but fantastic Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski Resort. The location of the mountain and ski resort subject it to heavy snowfall each winter making it an ideal destination for skiers and snowboarders wanting to dive into some deep stuff without the crowds. I provide information about Muikamachi Hakkaisan – one of my favourite ski resorts – following my chat with Shoko.

We're here. The finale and Aum Shinrikyo's Armageddon extravaganza. Aum has now fully transformed itself into a true paramilitary death cult with commando units, an "Intelligence Ministry" multiple weapons factories for all the different types of weapons, conventional, chemical, biological, you name it. Most importantly, they have "The Wizard", a chemical weapons factory that, among other implements of death, produced two of the most horrifying and deadly chemical weapons known to man: Sarin and VX Nerve Agent. Shoko and the gang have their sights set on a series of insane plans to bring about the end of the world, all culminating in the infamous 1995 Tokyo Subway sarin gas attacks, which in turn will lead to the fall of Shoko Asahara and the rest of the Aum leadership. But not, amazingly, the fall of Aum Shinrikyo as a religion. Filth is a virtue! If you're a member of Aum Shinrikyo, you'll know this already and this, dear Eavesdroppers, is just a small taste of what we're talking about this week on Eavesdroppin', when hosts Geordie & Michelle investigate the weird world of two cults…At the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a documentary called AUM: The Cult At The End of The World shocked viewers with its doomsday prophesies and culty behaviours. This week, Michelle digs into the cult and its leader, Shoko Asahara to uncover what happened in the lead up to the 1995 nerve gas attacks on the Tokyo subway and beyond, including a disturbing story of homemade nukes detonated in the Western Australian outback…Geordie then looks at an extremist branch of Judaism called Lev Tahor. With claims of child sex abuse, teen marriages, women forced to wear head-to-toe cloaks from the age of 3 and extreme punishments, Geordie asks the question: is it an extreme religion or a cult? With accounts from an ex member called Yisrael and a look at what Lev Tahor stands for, it's up to you to decide…We hope you enjoy this week's episode and remember, wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'!*Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever and our opinions are just opinions not fact, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy! cw: abuse, terrorism, sexual violence, death Our fifth and final segment of our Psychedelic Nightmare series examines the story of a lesser-known Japanese cult that was responsible for the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack in March 1995 that killed 14 and injured over 5,000 innocent civilians. Aum Shinrikyo was a cult led by - you guessed it - a malignant narcissist, Shoko Asahara. This episode, we explore Shoko's childhood, the development of his cult while also delving deep into its doomsday philosophies that combined a hodge-podge of religious philosophies with Nostradamus-esque beliefs. This story is a wild one with lots of twists and turns tied to religion, Japanese culture, chemical weapons development and more. We touch upon concepts of Shiva, Shakti, & karma in Hinduism, malignant narcissism in cult leaders, and highlight survivor stories and PTSD from the subway attack. You'll see how this story links back to all four others, creating an unlikely and disturbing tie that spans four decades, three cults and three countries while involving multiple government agencies and of course Albert Hoffman's Problem Child -- LSD. The Prince of Wales College, Achimota School, opened in 1927 north of Accra in the Gold Coast (Ghana). Achimota was to be a ‘model' school—but a model of what, exactly? And for whom? Shoko Yamada's book 'Dignity of Labour' for African Leaders: The Formation of Education Policy in the British Colonial Office and Achimota School (Langaa RPCIG, 2018) delves into the multiple discourses and contested politics that resulted in Achimota. Her careful analysis pulls apart the different strands of American and British educational models that influenced Achimota, while also attending to the specificities of Gold Coast politics that shaped the school's creation. Yamada then tracks how those influences combined, in the context of the 1920s and 1930s Gold Coast, to create an entirely new colonial institution. Elisa Prosperetti is an Assistant Professor in International History at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. Her research focuses on the connected histories of education and development in postcolonial West Africa. Contact her at here. Learn more about your ad choices. Amit Peled — Solus Et Una (CTM Classics) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Amit Peled by “The instrument I'm using for this recording helped me to feel more intune with myself because it's a cello that I received during the pandemic. It's a Grancino that was made in 1695,” Israeli-born cellist Amit Peled said. “Just before the pandemic, I had to return Pablo Casals' cello, which I used before. The moment I touched this cello, I felt it. I'm basking in an imaginary hot chocolate bath. I'm not kidding.” Peled calls his new cello, ‘Shoko.' In Hebrew it means, hot chocolate. It brings out a special sense of warmth and comfort in the music on his latest recording, Solus Et Una. “Solus Et Una means alone and together, which basically describes my time during the pandemic,” continued Peled. “I was artistically alone at first and throughout the middle. Towards the end of it I found ways to make music together with others. “We found in the bubble situation we were basically isolating ourselves as a group in the mountains of Montana. This was a place where we could be mask less with no vaccination and do nothing but just walk and make music the way we used to. The nature and the ability to make music together again was a transformative revelation for all of us. Of course, this was inspired by the NBA bubble. My love for basketball showed me the light.” How did this arrangement of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3, II. Andante happen? “I did what I usually do when I want to get inspiration. I stop thinking and I went for a walk. This Brahms symphony came to my mind while I was walking, which I love. I am also a conductor, and he is my favorite composer. I started hearing it in my mind. When I got back from the walk, I put it on Spotify. When I got to this movement, I could totally hear the cello sound. “I have a conductor friend who arranges music, and he has a friend, who is on the album, that also does arrangements. He lives in Serbia. I contacted him and he sent me back the arrangement. He said it was easy. It's fit for eight cellos and piano. When we got to Montana, we rehearsed it every single day making changes to make it sound as close as possible to the symphony.” Can you talk about Bach's Cello Suite No.4? “I had so much time to just play that suite. I said to myself, ‘Ok, stop judging yourself, just play.' I played it every day until I fell in love with it. I played it as a song of love. “I remember reading an interview with Yo-Yo Ma, where he said on his 60th birthday, ‘All I want now is to play and feel again like when I was a child and played the cello without any judgment.' I never understood what he meant until the pandemic. You play, think and practice to your standard. But in a way, you must let go and do it. When we were kids, we play as if we were outside with friends. That's how I want to play the cello now.” To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.
