MID-WEST FARM REPORT - MADISON
Alzheimer's Strikes Regardless Of Location And Nonfat Continues To Slip - Zach Bowers

Fair season in Wisconsin brings with it a few changes for livestock exhibitors. Jill Welke chats with Dr. Meg Mueller about her engagement in the dialog. Also, while New World Screw Worm may not make it to the state, Dr. Mueller says it could still deal a financial blow to local producers. Her priorities include sourcing animals from outside the state and making pet owners who might adopt aware of the risks. Wow - severe weather on Wednesday is causing clean-up on Thursday. Stu Muck explains some of the areas of impact, and what's on the radar already this morning. He thinks it's going to be another 'alert day' with severe weather and high winds. Alzheimer's is a disease that does not discriminate. It doesn't matter where you live, or what your financial situation is. It's also random. Dr. Bill Stork, a retired veterinarian in Lake Mills, watched his mother slip away from Alzheimer's. Sunday, he's spearheading "Minds over Mountains" MOMs, in honor of his mother. The event in Lake Mills helps connect people with others handling the disease, researchers investigating it, and fund raising mechanisms to help further research. Stork says he's encouraged by the research progress he's seen in just the past few years. He also reminds people that they can control some of their outcome by thinking about their health today. Pam Jahnke visited with him. All eyes are on nonfat products in the marketplace. Zach Bowers, dairy analyst with EverAg, joins Pam Jahnke to discuss. That non-fat complex has drawn Wisconsin's Class III prices higher, and is likely moving lower now. Bowers says demand for U.S. dairy remains robust - especially cheese. Keeping an eye on what type of dairy product catches the globes attention will be what drives us next.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PR and Hidden Circles of Power and Influence - IFSEA Podcast

UK employment law information and advice

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2026 29:36

Progress has been made in opening up access to senior roles, but the pathways to influence are still shaped by long‑standing networks, notions of “fit,” and the power of reputation. Even in a more transparent world, who gets noticed and who gets recommended continues to depend on visibility, trust and the judgments of a relatively small group of decision‑makers. This podcast revisits the panel discussion PR and the Hidden Circles of Power and Influence, from the 6th IFSEA International Conference on Executive & Founder Issues, which took place in June 2025, bringing together experts from executive search, coaching, PR and employment law to explore how people reach the top, why others struggle to get onto the radar and what organisations can do to build leadership teams that genuinely reflect modern society. Jenny Afia, Schillings (UK) (Chair) Emma Bartlett, CM Murray LLP (UK) Katrina Cheverton, Chief Executive, Savannah Group (UK) Jason Nisse, The Nisse Consultancy (UK) Matt Nixon, Stork & May (UK) In particular, the panel discuss: Circles of power still shape senior appointments: While no longer hidden, they tend to remain concentrated among white, privately educated men from elite universities - reinforced by unconscious bias and a preference for “safe” hires who look familiar. Diversity of thought is now recognised as essential, but harder to source: Organisations want broader perspectives, yet talented people outside traditional networks still need to work disproportionately hard to become visible, even in a more transparent search environment. Who really carries your reputation? Not the public, but a small, influential group: senior peers, former colleagues, and headhunters who trade in trusted first‑hand impressions. Their quiet endorsements (or omissions) matter far more than a polished online profile. Online presence helps - but senior leaders are far more cautious now: Most avoid outspoken social media activity due to reputational risk. Yet the next generation is arriving with more expressive online histories, posing fresh challenges for organisations assessing “fit.” Expanding access requires leaders willing to take thoughtful risks: High‑potential candidates from non‑traditional backgrounds may lack standard credentials, but bring creativity, resilience and lived experience - the kind of assets that rarely surface through traditional hiring filters. Are organisations unintentionally shrinking their future leadership bench? Cuts to graduate schemes and the rise of AI are reducing entry‑level opportunities - disproportionately harming those without established networks, and storing up long‑term succession risks. Targeted access programmes show striking impact: The 10,000 Interns Programme achieves around a 70% retention rate, demonstrating how structured exposure can bring high‑quality talent into organisations that would otherwise miss them entirely. Flexible working remains key to inclusion - but is under pressure: Hybrid work opened doors for parents, carers and those with wider responsibilities, yet many organisations are retreating as old assumptions about visibility, productivity and culture reassert themselves. Inclusive leadership requires courage, curiosity and transparent processes: Leaders need to challenge inherited norms, understand experiences beyond their own, and design recruitment systems that avoid reproducing groupthink. Representation follows when inclusion is embedded.

Méthodologie: 3,9 millions requêtes, environnement Docker (1 cœur CPU, 1 Go RAM/serveur). Fiabilité: 0% d'erreurs pour toutes les implémentations. Tiers de performance: 1 (Haute): Go & Java (latence < 1ms, ~1600 requêtes/s). ▪︎ Go: Efficacité mémoire exceptionnelle (18 Mo vs 220 Mo pour Java). 2 (Moyenne): Node.js (latence ~10,7 ms, ~560 requêtes/s). Surcharge par instanciation. 3 (Faible): Python (latence ~26,5 ms, ~290 requêtes/s). Limité par GIL. Recommandations production: Go: Optimal forte charge, cloud-native, optimisation coûts. But : Dépasser parquet-java (dépendances lourdes, lecteur mono-threadé). Points clés : Dépendances minimes, pipeline de décodage multi-threadé. APIs : RowReader (ligne) et ColumnReader (colonne, haute perf.). Optimisations : Parallélisme pages, préchargement adaptatif, moins d'allocations. Développement : Assisté par IA (Claude Code), révision humaine. Futur : "Predicate push-down", compatibilité parquet-java, écriture, CLI, intégration Iceberg.

In this solo episode, Britten speaks directly to the 60 magicians coming into The Magician's Table Class of 2026, sharing a behind-the-scenes story of feeling wobbly under eclipse energy and asking for magical support. What unfolds is a cascade of omens, cards, ancestral messages, and a vivid vision of a white stork revealing a deeper meditation on Zero Aries, the Wheel of Fortune, and what it means to steward a dream that wants to live.  Through motherhood analogies, Saturn–Neptune reflections, and the Eight of Cups as living your refusal, Britten reframes Big Magic not as force or performance, but as care, attunement, and the willingness to feed what is hungry within you. She explores what it truly means to be magical: to ask, to be available, to take guidance seriously, and to let yourself be interrupted, mutated, astonished.  The Magician's Table, she explains, is not an expert space or an outcomes machine, but a living ritual container. A three-month field of coherence where overplanning falls away, comparative energy dissolves, and each Magician follows their own curriculum within deep community support.  If this space is calling you, Britten invites you to consider the core question at the heart of magic itself: Are you available?   +++   Learn More about The Magician's Table:  The Magician's Table is a 3-month container for personal growth, community connection, and practice growing one's tools as an intuitive and magical practitioner. It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. Hi, it's Natalie here. After a bit of a summer pause (thanks to some tech drama), I'm thrilled to be back with a truly special episode. This one was recorded live at the Green Man Festival, on the Pandemonium Stage in Einstein's Garden, and it's a conversation I've been dreaming about for a long time. If you've been to a festival over the summer and think this type of conversation would fit, do let me know. Feel free to leave a comment wherever you listen or scroll to the bottom to find out more. We tackled one of the most common yet complicated questions many of us face:“So, do you have kids?” It seems innocent, but for so many, it opens the door to grief, awkwardness, and a whole lot of emotional weight. In this episode, we explore why that question can hurt and what we might ask instead.I was joined by four incredible guests who generously shared their personal stories and wisdom on stage:Mel Johnson, solo parent coach and founder of The Stork and IShema Tariq, academic, writer, baby loss advocate and Tommy's trusteeBetty Mukherjee, MRKH campaigner and Race Across the World finalistAnd my husband, Rich Silverman, who opened up publicly for the first time about our journey with male factor infertility and the mental health impact on himWhat we talked aboutWhy the question “Do you have kids?” can be so deeply painful when you're navigating infertility, baby loss, or childlessness not by choiceMel's journey to solo motherhood and the way people still make assumptions about women who choose that pathShema's IVF experience using donor eggs, the heart breaking loss of her baby at 21 weeks, and how her cultural background shaped her experienceBetty's diagnosis of MRKH at 16 and how she opened up about it during her time on national TVRich's journey with male factor infertility and how counselling helped him move forward, plus why more men need space to share tooThe words we use around fertility and family, and how language can uplift or hurtTalking to children about solo parenting and donor conception, and why openness mattersThe trauma of fertility treatment, especially for people of colour, and the inequalities that still existHow to truly show up for loved ones going through these journeys, and why "I'm here if you ever want to talk" is sometimes not enoughBetter ways to connectIf you're ever unsure of what to say instead of “Do you have kids?”, here are a few suggestions we shared:“What's been bringing you joy lately?”“What's been going on in your world?”“What are you passionate about these days?”And most importantly: ask twice. We talk about the fox guarding the hen house of formula testing, the 626 NEC lawsuits filed against major manufacturer Abbott, RFK Jr.'s murky ties to the formula industry, and how social media marketing has become the newest weapon against maternal instinct. This conversation isn't about shame. It's about power: power in knowledge, power in truth, and power in numbers. It's time to reclaim motherhood from corporate capture. Get involved with RMU if mobilizing mothers to advocate for change makes you excited!

Send us a textIn this week's episode of NeoNews, the team reflects on a quiet Mother's Day before diving into a full slate of stories touching the emotional and political corners of neonatal care. First up: parenting in the digital age. The crew unpacks a gripping New York Times essay by Amanda Hess, whose prenatal diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome led her down the rabbit hole of medical Googling, Facebook support groups, and the complicated power of online communities for medically complex families. Then, we turn to formula safety and the Biden administration's new “Operation Stork Speed.” The team discusses the implications for NICU care, parental anxiety, and advocacy in the wake of increased scrutiny over heavy metals and contaminants in infant formula. From there, we navigate the ripple effects of tariffs on medical supplies, pharmacy deserts, and drug shortages—all of which directly impact the NICU.Rounding out the show: U.S. birth rates now favor parents over 40 versus teens, RSV vaccines show impressive real-world results, and new research questions everything we thought we knew about preemie blood pressures.Packed with insight, outrage, and a few Dumbo references, this episode covers the headlines shaping neonatal care and the families we serve. The Department of Education, as we knew it, has come to an end. President Trump has signed an executive order essentially dismantling the department and returning education back to the states to decide on. In other news, a new campaign to get heavy metals out of baby formula, and to make sure that formula is reliable and nutritious, has been launched by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He's referring to this campaign as “Operation Stork Speed.”
